How to Plan the Perfect Multi-island Trip to Hawaii

"For example, if sleeping near an active volcano and night snorkeling with manta rays are two activities topping your list, book a couple of nights at the historic Volcano House — the only lodging within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — on the Hilo side of the Island of Hawaii and a few nights at Mauna Kea Resort or The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort on the Kona side, where you can join a guided small group night snorkel with Manta Ray Advocates." - Travel + Leisure Editors

You have to exercise a lot of patience, especially during the time when the volcano is active. They do a really good job off not letting anybody overextend their welcome. There aren’t any shortcuts. The bartender was fantastic and kept us company since we arrived for dinner a little early. And we somehow got lucky and managed to come back for lunch two days later when the volcano erupted. Had seats looking out directly at the volcano which we consider a once in a lifetime experience. Again, the staff was very friendly and provided very good service considering how busy they were. Food was excellent.

We only stopped at the restaurant for a quick lunch, and truth be told, we didn’t have high expectations. Boy were we thrilled with how excellent the whole experience was. We had a table with an excellent view of the crater, our food was delicious, and our server (Cailee—seriously…ask for her and you won’t be disappointed!) was probably the best server we’ve had during our vacation. She was utterly delightful! We will definitely come back when we can and we highly recommend the restaurant!!

Definitely a 4 star hotel, no more no less. The rooms here are pretty old and small. Having 4+ people in a room is pretty impossible/very hard. The showers in the room are pretty bad too and I don’t recommend showering here unless you are here for 3+ days. The view from the room is amazing though and it is breathtaking. The location is pretty good here too. Can’t really emphasize that you are literally on a volcano. You can see the smoke rise from the crater and even lava (only if you are there at the right time). Tons of hikes and walks which are easy/hard for your likings. I recommend the Lava Tube hike (very easy) and the Kīlauea Iki Trail (medium/hard). I would give the location 5 stars but due to the lack of stores and restaurants nearby which are all expensive, it’s a 4 star location. The service was also amazing and we had no issues. Overall, I recommend coming here if you like hikes, being on a literal volcano, and don’t mind the cost too much.

Google
We didn’t stay here but the view of the volcano from the viewing area is unbeatable. It was a very hot day, so we got matcha and lemonade from the coffee stand next to the viewing area. Got some gifts from the gift shops as well. Overall wonderful experience and would love to stay here in future.

Google
Great experience. It was surprisingly cool at night in early May. My brother was worried about no AC but was quickly proven to not be an issue. Very pleasant shower. Restaurant had great vibe. Nice seating area. Nice to be in the park before and after the crowds. Loved the welcome Mimosa and historic video and fireplace.

Google
Rooms are very basic but incredible views! We were fortunate enough to be able to easily see it erupting from our window. Truly a once in a lifetime experience...but also a matter of luck if you happen to be there at the right time!

Google
We stayed three nights at the Volcano House. If you are going to stay overnight in the HVNP area, try to stay here, and get a room with a crater view. The location is unparalleled -- right on the rim of the crater which keeps erupting (we, of course, timed our visit in between eruptions!!). The drinks are great. The dinner is good to great, depending on the night, which is not something that can be said about every National Park Inn. The breakfasts are great. The vibe is awesome! Everyone is so excited to be there and hoping for an eruption. The service is great. ||The rooms are not luxurious but the beds are very comfortable. Again, the view is amazing, especially at 4am when you can see the "glow" from the crater, which you cannot see once the sun rises.||The only small negative -- which is somewhat outside of the control of the Volcano House -- is the parking. The visitor center is across the street from the Volcano House and offers a lot of parking, but it is currently under construction and many of the parking spots there have been temporarily eliminated. This is more of a problem around lunchtime when people come in to the park and want to eat lunch at the Rim Room. It would be nice if the Volcano House reserved some parking for guests who are staying overnight. So, for example, I might recommend doing Chain of Craters Road after you check out from the Inn so that you do not have to find parking once you return. Also, the Crater Trail runs along the rim of the crater and to all of the major hiking/viewing areas, including the Volcano House, so rather than drive to a different part of the park you can just walk and hold your parking space.

Google
Fantastic experience! Room in the historic wing had fun details. Amenities were a welcome surprise - mimosas at check in, fresh cookies in the afternoon and coffee in the morning. Location of the hotel right on the rim of the volcano was amazing. Kilauea Volcano erupting while we were there was a once in a lifetime experience! The staff went above and beyond to help out with a minor issue. Cannot wait to stay here again!

Yelp
The top two things worth mentioning from my visit to Volcano House would be the fantastic service from our waitress, and the surreal views (a window-side table, no less) of the world famous volcano crater. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself was a bit dated, or perhaps lacking a cohesive relationship with the rest of the building. To me, it felt more like a Carolina Beach Restaurant than it did National Park Lounge. But that's such a small and petty gripe. I will say, though, I loved my fish & chips. Like... I was so close to ordering another plate, I was so impressed. I may slightly regret my decision still, if you can't tell. A tad bit overpriced, but when you enter a tourist trap, what are you gonna do? Overall, I don't think I'd ever seek out another visit to this restaurant overall; but if I do find myself going, you best believe I know what I'm going to order. x2 the next time around!

Yelp
Writing this review brings me no joy - considering the view from the restaurant is absolutely STELLAR, I was a bit underwhelmed with the food and the prices that came with. Perhaps the restaurant is able to take advantage of being one of the only places in town that serves a reliable meal - and don't get me wrong, I enjoyed what we ate, but the fish and chips portion was fairly small and the fries were not so generously coated for the price - most hardly had toppings at all. Service was fine, and there is no beating the view - but again, I just wanted something a bit more epic (especially considering the time we were there was before the eruptions - which has been a huge bummer to look back and see how we JUST missed it). Came back the next morning for breakfast because again there was not much else available - omelette station was much appreciated and as was any of the pork products :) fairly empty and didn't really get much service at all.

Yelp
We stayed here for one night in May 2025. The building itself is old, but well maintained. I was a little leery, as I heard not so great things about this hotel, but I was pleasantly surprised at how clean it was. The bathroom was clean with good water pressure and lots of hot water. The location is unbeatable. You walk outside and you're at the volcano. In the morning while we were waiting for breakfast to open we enjoyed complimentary coffee. The breakfast buffet was delicious - and the view from breakfast was SPECTACULAR! This might be the perfect weekend getaway. We will definitely be back.

Love the views, food and friendly staff. We came here for the view but stay for dinner.

Yelp
We made a quick stop to this historic hotel. Loved the gift shop!! Wish we had time to try the restaurant. The views of the volcano in the back are worth the stop!!

Yelp
There were a lot of people as we were watching episode 15 of volcano erruption that started in Dec 2024. We were here Wed Mar 26 at around 4pm. To our surprisse it was first cone first serve but were seated quite quickly, food was ordered in less than 30 min. Took amazing photos of the volcano at the porch and food came out in no time. Fish and chips were great and to my surprise it was not previous frozen type. The fish were big spears and fries were good. 2 big fish spears came. Definitely recomnended. Burgers were above average but not the best. Pizza was oven cooked. One sude was a bit burned and charred but the other side was great. Highly recomnended.

Yelp
3.5 stars but bumping it to 4 for the views. Volcano House is located within Volcanoes National Park and is the only option for food in the area. They also have rooms there but you need to book early. It has an amazing view of the Kilauea crater. The food here is mediocre but I'm glad there is food. The fried chicken wings are not fully crispy. They boil it and then fry it. The skin under the breading was still soft. The Korean galbi was filling and has a nice char but too salty. Prices are high but not terribly so considering it's location.

Yelp
Dining at the Volcano House Restaurant is an unforgettable experience. The view alone is absolutely breathtaking--you're literally eating on the edge of Kilauea Caldera, with a panoramic overlook of the crater that's especially magical around sunset or when the steam rises from the volcano. The atmosphere is cozy yet elegant, with large windows so you can take in the scenery no matter where you're seated. The food was fresh and thoughtfully prepared--we had the catch of the day and the island-style short ribs, both cooked perfectly and full of flavor. They also offer great vegetarian options and a lovely selection of local wines and cocktails. Service was warm and attentive, and everything from the presentation to the pacing of the meal felt well done. Whether you're staying at the Volcano House or just stopping by, this restaurant is 100% worth the visit--for the view and the food.

Yelp
We visited a few hours before episode 23 started, on a Sunday, so it was packed. They also had a wedding occurring. With that, we sat at the bar and received decent service. The bartender was alone and very busy but still took our orders quickly and refilled our drinks as quickly as he could. I ordered the kalua pork and pineapple flatbread and it was the size of a regular pizza. I took most of it back to our resort. My husband had the volcano house burger and said it ok. The bun was soggy by the time it came. Overall, it was as good as could be expected considering how busy it was. The view is great but there so many people outside it was hard to see from inside. We would visit again when the construction is done and it's a weekday.

Yelp
the views of the crater are absolutely out of this world, whether inside or outside! the staff were very friendly and accommodating, offering us a table with a better crater view when they saw we kept looking outsidd. we ordered the loaded fries, the burger, and the pork. the portions were huge and the fries were crispy. the pork was a bit salty

Yelp
Turned around and went back into the park to eat because our attempt outside was met with exorbitant Thai food prices. I had wanted to see what this place had to offer and we were served by a very kind staff member whose name I can't fully remember but started with a C. She not only took care of us during our meal but gave helpful camping recommendations as we were plotting out our evening. The pizza was quite oily with the pesto but we dabbed some off and the leftovers made for a great far breakfast next day! We warmed up with mugs of hot cocoa and shared a little cookie butter ice cream treat to wrap the evening.

Yelp
I enjoyed a late lunch at Volcano House after a day of hiking in the national park, and I was pleasantly surprised by the food. They had a burger special--buy one, get one half off--so my friend and I ordered two Big Island Burgers. The server was very accommodating when we requested to remove the goat cheese from one of the burgers. When our food arrived, the burgers looked and tasted fantastic, and the fries were cooked to perfection. To top it off, our table was right next to the window, offering an amazing view of the volcano while we dined. After a long day in the park, I highly recommend stopping here for a meal!
google avatar

Yelp
The views were spectacular and we were seated rather quickly. However, there was rotten tomatoes and moldy radishes on my steak salad, I was so disgusted I couldn't even try to eat it. Another dish came out so cold for a hot meal. One of our meals came out 15 mins after all the others. And another meal came without any dressing for the salad. If you are gluten free, you can order the GF pizza or burger lettuce wrapped. The kids enjoyed the pizza.

Yelp
Superb restaurant inside Volcanoes National Park, worth going into the park for the food alone! We stopped by around 1:45 pm and were seated after about a 15 minute wait. Our waiter Chris was very friendly, and helped the ladies in our party choose the right appetizers (big island chicken wings with guava barbecue, and Hawaiian-style loaded French fries) and entrées (big island burger, and guava bbq pulled pork sliders). I went for the Taste of Hawaii crispy chicken Katsu plate, which included potato pasta salad, Furikake white rice, and house-made Namasu salad. The food arrived quickly, and it was delicious! My favorites were the wings and the katsu, though the other dishes were decent as well. Total bill was about $120 before tip, and it was worth every penny! Will be back next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
We recently stayed at Volcano house & we were lucky to see the eruption on 5/16. Dining options are mediocre at best in both of the hotels restaurants. They keep the lights so damn bright inside at night you can't see a damn thing. It's like dining in a UFW hall. Rim is overpriced & has ZERO ambience. 50.00 plus steaks & 45 dollar pastas The cafe/bar has decent food but our server was AWFUL. We were one of 2 tables in the place & we simply asked if he would dim the lights as it was so obnoxiously bright in the restaurant & he said " these are the lights we have." Set our food down & walked away never to check on us again. He deserves 1 star at most. I get that sometimes you can't change things or accommodate a request but to be rude about it is unacceptable. The hotel stay & staff were great

Yelp
For a national park lunch this place has the wow factor in spades. You have great views of the volcano at most tables. The staff was fast and friendly. And the food was surprisingly really really good. The burger on the aloha buns tastes fresh and the fish and chips were as good as any I've had. I highly recommend giving your hiking legs a break and have a lunch here.

Yelp
Sometimes a venue shines because of the venue, rather than the food, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Situated in the rim of a volcano, the restaurant at the hotel had me skeptical. Anytime you can have an iconic view, usually a restaurant puts on an adequate effort when it comes to their food, especially when catered to "tourists". I ordered the Kalua Pork plate and found it to be very good! There was an abundance of it on my plate. It was moist, well seasoned, and tasty. My wife ordered to Somen Salad, which looked good, but the noodles were coated in creamy dressing, which was a little off putting for her. Service was decent, but could be improved. No one seemed to really smile and order taking felt rushed.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely one of the better meals in a National Park I've ever had! Bread and butter was a little funky because it was sweet and rosemary. The same can be said for the fish. The sweetness just didn't go together. Guava Flow was very good! The poke was funky too. It was certainly not stacked. Maybe they should advertise it as a deconstructed stack. The had live music. Not sure if it added or took away from experience. Service was very good. Great Atmosphere and Views. I feel like the chef tries way way too hard and the flavors just didn't mesh at all. Still a good meal and i would come again.

Yelp
I love these random restaurant experiences, it always turns out to be surprisingly unexpectedly good. My assumption before we entered the restaurant, was this: Overpriced. Expensive for nothing. Bland. I mean it's typical for tourists spots. Refrigerated sandwiches, overpriced water bottles. This restaurant exceeded my expectations. The service was great! The wait was tolerable I would say not more than 20 minutes. The space is very big. The tables and chairs were huge adequate for the amount of space it had to fill. The feng shui is very on point. You're not bumping into people or chairs while walking to your table. But let me tell you about what I ate ! I was in a sea of pesto heaven! Everything they served was fucking amazing. I got the Volcanoe House Pasta. I really don't know how else to describe this place except: fucking amazing. I don't know what other word to use to emphasize amazing. Oh & we got to watch Pele, live, in person and in all her glory.

Yelp
Yummy! The staff were very friendly and helpful, great view if the weather was clearer AND food was delicious. We decided to stop and have a bite before our hike and we're so glad we did. We split the Mascarpone pizza and Garlic White and both were even better than we could imagine. I'm a little bit of a pizza snob, so I didn't have high expectations for Hawaiian pizza, but I was wrong. Maybe more traditional pizza may disappoint me, but these didn't. I didn't take picture immediately like I should've, but something is better than nothing.
google avatar

Yelp
After lunch, the bill without details, total charged $132.77. We were in a hurry so didn't ask for details, but back to hotel, just feel the price is not very right. If Pizza $28; fish chip $25; shrimp $19; one ice tea, one cock zero, with one refill if total of $15. Two cocktails if total of $32. Plus local tax. I felt it's kind of over charged.

Yelp
Since you're Yelping this restaurant, you realize that your options are limited in this portion of the volcano park. Also you aren't in this area for the food, either - it's all about Nature's Wonders. That's why we came here. This was a great location for seeing the Kilauea and Halemaumau Craters, in their totalities: steam & all. There were several self-guided walks around here with sign boards. At the end of one meal, we even bought a cup of coffee and marveled at the craters from rocking chairs for a relaxing bit. Some of the staff were attentive and others had a slow pace. We shared the Volcano House Burger. As you can see in my pic, it was a juicy 8 oz burger. It comes as you'd expect but with small Hawaiian twist: avocado mayo. The burger was good and I liked the avo mayo spread. The fries were average. From their Taste of Hawaii selections we had their Crispy Chicken Katsu. Their panko bread crumb coating was okay and the chicken breast was cooked well. As you can see from my pic, there was plenty of chicken. There was a side of teriyaki-BBQ sauce which added the requisite flavor. We came back for the location and the ability to chill.

Yelp
On our way to hike around in the Volcanoes National Park we stopped for a drink and a nibble. We each got a drink and Poke Nachos to share. Everything was outstanding!!! Our bartender/ server was really great about discussing our drinks and sharing info on some special ingredients and unique Hawaiian liquor. The other seating available was at the window with a view of the Volcano. When we walked in the building it smelled kind of like bbq, however once outside we realized it was the volcano still smoldering with steam escaping. A really cool experience you won't want to miss. I highly recommend this place!!!

Yelp
Review of 05/19/2025.We ate at the bar. Ordered off the menu Chicken Katsu and the fish and chips. We enjoyed both. Good service with Ian the bartender. Ambiance overall is good with views of the Volcano. Brunch was also good on 05/20/25.
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Alright, ate here when I just got back from the 4 mile trail and was starving. Ambience was good, however the server kinda seemed like she didn't like her job. Grilled chicken a little flavorless, with sweet vegetables which I hate and also the bottom bun was soggy, fries were fire though. Also the view of the volcano was probably the best part of this place, if I'm ever here again I'll come back but get something different. The tomato bisc was the best thing on the menu, in my opinion.

J I.

Yelp
Magical place where you can eat and relax in a cozy chair or couch, near a fireplace, while you view the volcano -- or even better, sleep over in the hotel. A unique experience and hotel.

Yelp
This is one of the coolest hotels I've EVER stayed at! It's all about the location! You can look out and see an active volcano smoking! Does it have tv? No...a pool, no...a tad outdated, YES...but I felt like I was in 1950's Hawaii! The bar restaurant on site was very good (I'll review it separately). Try not to arrive at peak hours, parking lot is not big and fills up. You are within walking distance to a lot from here. You still need to drive to see the vents and old lava tube, but being there allows you to beat everyone there! Get up EARLY to beat the crowds. We were on the move by 7am (just coming off east coast time that was easy). It is cold in the morning and at night, make sure you have a light jacket. Also gets a little rain and mist (saw a lot of rainbows). Can't recommend this place enough, see pictures below!
google avatar

Sue L.

Yelp
Went to Volcano House to have an early lunch after doing a hike earlier in the morning. We had a Volcano Burger (simple and tasty), margarita pizza (meh) and wings (meh). Unfortunately we had a pesky fly that kept us company our entire meal. Service was pretty much what you'd expect - pleasant but not super quick. Views of the crater were stunning though. Couldn't beat those views - would recommend the food solely on that.
google avatar

Chrisrtian M.

Yelp
Salad the dressing was good flavor but the salad is nice the pizza is the best so far also needs more something this salad is just missing the Asian wontons on top to make it and soy beans bring out two dressings every time too however the salad grows on you just not 5 star quality food well because I love the service you get 5 again plus the view

Yelp
We stayed at the Nanakani Paio Campground in the cabins operated by Volcano House. You must book the cabins months in advance as there are only 10 cabins. They are a bargain at only $80 a night and sleep 4 people comfortably. The cabins are about a 3 mile drive from the Volcano House. This was disappointing because we were hoping to access within walking distance. Instead we had to leave and exit the park to go back and forth. We were hoping to have views of the volcano from our campground but they are located in a wooded area. The cabins are a step above tent camping. They are equipped with one double bed and a set of bunk beds. The included bedding is clean and warm. The cabin has 2 outlets for charging in phones or whatever you need. There is no heater or air, but we really didn't need. Outside is a covered picnic table. Bring a table cloth. There is a grill and fire pit. You will need to bring supplies like wood. We were not able to use either because there was a no burn order in effect, which was odd as there was extensive rain on our visit. So we were not able to cook. The nearest store is 10 miles away and has limited stock. There is a common bath facility at the campgrounds. It is secure and clean. It was challenging to get to the facilities because the rain created large puddles and there is no light outside. Bring a flashlight. Each cabin has room for one car. There are lovely trees around the site with birds and frogs singing. The staff at the Volcano House is friendly and offered us complementary mimosas upon arrival. I'd stay again but now better prepared with what to bring.

Yelp
Very solid food for a restaurant in a national park. The food is average. Service is a little slow, mostly because the restaurant is quite big and it is the only place to eat for miles. The view is fantastic. We stopped by for lunch but if you happen to be at the part during and eruption, I highly recommend stopping by for dinner, the view is fantastic
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
If you are visiting the volcano you should eat here. It's the only game in town if you don't plan but it's worth going for other reasons. The view to the volcano is spectacular. Your are able to sit and stare inside a building (for the older folks that need more comfort) or be outside on the benches or sit along the ledge. The historic hotel has an old school feel which takes you to another time and place in US history. The food is quite delicious and the price is fair. Besides great food you get an amazing view the whole time! We came on jan 2 so they were sold out on pizza (probably did not get replenished). I ate a steak salad, kiddo got pasta marinara, and the man got poke. My steak was quite fancy and well balanced. Cooked right to my liking- medium rare. We all enjoyed our lunch there and highly recommend others to go there.

Yelp
We ate a dinner and a breakfast in Volcano House. For a restaurant in a national park lodge, Volcano house is pretty good. As with NP lodge restaurants, it is expensive. Stunning views of the crater. The food is good for a NP lodge. Three stars anywhere else. The service and waitstaff were attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the bar menu more than the Volcano House for dinner. The breakfast buffet is pretty standard but decent.

Matt K.

Yelp
Horrible service. Food was good and the view is excellent but incredibly poor wait time and staff that don't seem to want to be here.
google avatar

April L.

Yelp
I hesitated to give three but I did because everyone who works there is extremely nice. Except for the bartender that works in the very back of the restaurant restaurant. He was just a unhappy person or just mad at his wife lol. I only said that because he mentioned her a couple times in a not so nice way. He wasn't joking!! my husband, and I definitely try to break the eyes, but no can do. Others can sit and have a drink, and he was just as rude to them. As for the food, nothing to brag about and definitely not worth the price. You cannot take a picture at night of the volcano inside so it's better just to eat go Outside and get an absolute breathless view. We did the hike for 2 miles and it was spectacular. This restaurant is definitely understaffed and food came cold and steaks are not good. I could see the staff working hard, but they were just too little of them to do a good job for that many people. I made a reservation online and it was a little late so I try to get in earlier, but I just waited and we were still called half an hour after our scheduled reservation time. I think I was being generous with the three stars. A suggestion is Management needs to get a better chef and definitely needs to get a more pleasant Bartender working in the back. He did not want to be bothered even about what kind of drinks he had. This is a prime spot and there is no competition so perhaps they can get away with having not very good service and definitely not very good food. Staff was very kind! (except for the grumpy Bartender)

Yelp
We stopped here on a day-long tour and the experience left a fair bit to be desired. Options seem to be limited in the area, but felt like this spot had a fair bit of room for improvement. Wife got the pizza, which lacked much/any flavor and was primarily flavorless crust - and I got the burger, which was just fine. Fries were fine and the mai tai was mostly disappointing (and not really a mai tai).
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
The food was awful. I couldn't eat my chicken sandwich. Absolutely no flavor and tasted like unseasoned boiled chicken. Hamburgers tasted like they were using frozen patties. The only decent part of dinner was the French fries. The restaurant was dirty and even worse was clogged toilets with human waste. I would rather use an outhouse. The view was lovely but you can easily enjoy the view without wasting money for food.
google avatar

Sara Y.

Yelp
There aren't a lot of food options at or near volcano national park and we were very pleased with our lunch here! Eddie was our server and he was very attentive, interactive and considerate, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. It was by far the best service we've received during our trip. My husband had the burger with bacon and said it was the best burger he's had in a long time, it was cooked medium, juicy and loaded with bacon. The pesto pasta was also very tasty, and my son was happy with the katsu chicken. We would definitely recommend!

Yelp
The place is already in a beautiful spot! You can see the crater right as you eat and drink. The food is ono (delicious) and very fresh. I value the taste and presentation and this place has both on lock. The service is a bit slow, but we came at peak lunch time (12-1pm). The waitresses are attentive and friendly. We truly enjoyed our food while overlooking the volcano .

Yelp
This was a "mid-e-bike ride" stop. We popped in, and as was a constant experience on this trip - "this is a HOTEL TOO?" We popped in for lunch - something simple - and hung out at the bar. Our bartender was on top of her game, made the flatbread recommendation (her favorite) and it was the bomb. Shut up cilantro haters - it was perfect. The Caesar was perfect as well - not overly complicated, just perfect. Small beer selection - but they had Ola brew, which was my favorite find this trip.

Yelp
I got their gluten free pesto ricotta pizza during lunch. It was 10/10 for me sooooo good. They said burger and grilled cheese were OK, but we all loved the view while eating and the service was great

Yelp
Ow to name the things that went wrong. Don't get me wrong the food my family was able to eat was good. My so loved the lobster roll and my wife really enjoyed the Kalua pork flare bread pizza. My volcano burger and fries came without catchup which took 15 minutes to get and my both were cold. My son ordered fish & chips bit got pasta which was corrected 15 minutes later. Them when the bill came they chargers me for the pasta. Not with the 2 hour wait.

Yelp
My uncle hyped this place a lot because of the sign seeing feature but it was unfortunately a big let down. The "volcano" is inverted so it's more of a hole and you can see smoke the size of a typical household chimney. We honestly were expecting some lava action :/ Service!!! Chris was awesome!!! We've had mostly bad bad exps with the serves. They're in some mood that makes them either quite and just do their job etc etc not friendly. The point is Chris was a breath of fresh air. The food was pretty good! My sister got a pizza and it was hugeee! Also tasteful, definitely would get it again. The red blend was delicious to me. My brother loved the katsu and rice. Would've loved to have taken pics of all the other food but i was slacking this time.

Yelp
The Volcano House is a fun stop during your visit to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. This historic hotel was initially built in 1846 and has a couple restaurants, a little coffee stand, a couple nice gift shops, a pressed penny machine, and beautiful outdoor views of Kilauea as well as nature walks. If you're looking for souvenirs, their gift shops have great selections for the national park - we found to like their options better than the official bookstore. It was cloudy and cold during our visit, so grabbed a coffee from their stand and enjoyed the walk out back. Wasn't that crowded (believe it was a down season), so we really got to enjoy the walk and the views to ourselves. Would love to one day return and stay here while we explore the park further. Nice stop for a walk, a drink, or a bite to eat.

Yelp
We were able to score a last minute reservation when Tutu Pele was in action. The staff was amazing, the food was on point and the ambiance was on fire . Definitely recommend this experience when Tutu Pele is in action if you're feeling fancy.

Yelp
Disappointing that the management shows so little care in consistancy or customer service. Half the menu - the entire page of pizzas - is only available from 11-2:30. Not 2:35 or 2:32. They need to start making it by 2:30 because they turn the ovens off and only one employee knows how to work the oven (apparently). Little communication from the kitchen as they didn't tell us for a half hour after we ordered. This is not noted on their menu even though it's apparently been the case for a while. The cutoff time keeps getting earlier and earlier. They used to have happy hour, but stopped when the tourists came back. If there is an impromptu eruption, food service will be even more limited. Owned by a mainland company with management that seems to have just given up. The attitude kind of trickles down to the employees. The pizzas are good (when you can get them). The bar is good. The view is amazing. The rest is kind of blah. So few options in Volcano, it's sad to lose what could be a nice place

Yelp
It's a restaurant with a nice view. There was an available table with a view but they wouldn't move us near there. The adult food is okay. The kids food was not great. My child wouldn't eat the pizza and he thought it looked ghastly. He did like the French fries.

Yelp
Well, the view is awesome and you have to brave the elements. It's amazing to have this view with your meal. Sure, prices are high...the view is priceless. Reservations recommended and Volcano House guests get a reduced price. I popped in for a quick breakfast. It's buffet style for $19. Pack your patience but it's worth it. There are a few tables by the window. With a few minutes wait, we were able to get seated at a lucky spot. The hot dishes are your usual breakfast foods. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, a turkey hash, and potatoes. On the other table we're an assortment of breads with butter, cream cheese, and strawberry jam packets. Cereal (corn flakes), yogurt, and granola were also available. Rice is available but you have to ask. There's also a full bar if you roll like that in the morning. Brunch vibes can happen in a volcano too! The best food comes hot from a few flips at Daniel's station. He makes THE BEST waffles. The omelettes are made to order and are tasty too. Ask him for a big flip! Give a cash tip for an extra aloha.
