Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park Guide: This Hawaiian National Park Is Home to One of the World’s Most Active Volcanoes – Here’s How to Visit

"Set in a rainforest roughly six minutes from the park entrance, the 12-room Volcano Inn offers a home-like lodging option with rooms for singles, couples, families, and groups, includes a complimentary breakfast, offers a multi-night discount, and features a hot tub (so bring a swimsuit)." - Kait Hanson

We really wanted to like this place. The jungle view outside of our two story window was spectacular. But it was the little things that brought this review down.||VERY limited drinking water in room (tap water unpotable); perhaps provide TWO carafes per room? And have your service staff refill daily? With limited mobility, it was a real pain to walk up and down two flights of stairs just to get drinking water. And then to have to take off and put back on shoes to do so; please provide benches outside of rooms if you expect folks to do this. We aren't all twenty somethings.||I understand that this was a drought year, so you needed to buy your water anyway. If you provide a hot tub, please fill it (lowest level I have ever seen) and maybe make it a bit hotter? It gets cold on the volcano, ironically enough.||The toilets did not have enough water to flush properly. At least two were clogged (including our own, yucko) on site our first morning there. They actually make toilets now that have two buttons, depending on your use. You might want to invest in these; they are standard all across Australia, and coming into their own in America. ||I liked the provided breakfast, warm banana bread and yogurt and nut covered papaya boats, but my husband found it insubstantial. C'mon, Eco-Resort, don't provide hideous, chemical-laden Coffee Mate packets for our morning coffee, live a little and provide milk or cream. And some of our fave hotels, and not four star ones, either, actually provide milk in the room, for that all important first cuppa.||Do better, Hotel Volcano Inn.

Google
Wonderful stay at the Volcano Inn. The owner is amazing and was super accommodating in moving the dates I had originally booked for ones sooner as I changed my itinerary around. It's a quick 5-10 min drive to the National Park and perfect for someone who wants a quiet room that isn't too luxury based. Great deals on price and if I come back to this Park, this will be my go to! Highly recommend! Also- the papaya and banana bread in the morning are such a wonderful way to start your day!

A nice quiet inset in beautiful rain forest surroundings. The breakfast veranda was charming. The communal room offered a nice setting to digest the books and maps as well as real time video from Kīlauea. The breakfast offerings were tasty, if limited. Our room was clean and comfortable. |My only dismay was at having to remove my shoes with no slippers or socks provided.

Google
If you're checking out Volcano National Park then this is a primo spot to stay. The owner is super nice, the location is amazing, it's gorgeous all around the property, the eating area is so charming, and the price is great. The only downside is the rooms are basically the room at your house. Which if you're not expecting luxury then it is more than comfortable.

Google
Staff were friendly and accommodating, ensuring that our anniversary evening was a success! Room was comfortable and flush with necessities. Pet friendly "Lava Room" for the win! The homemade banana bread and papaya boats for breakfast was perfect before beginning our drive back home. Mahalo for the experience and we can't wait to come back!

Google
Conveniently located near Volcanoes National Park, I truly felt so relaxed in this bungalow style and forest-like B&B. The hostess was super friendly and the banana bread and papaya boat were simply fresh and delicious. I slept so comfortably both nights we stayed because the rooms are relaxing, quiet and connected to nature with all the amenities one would need. Definitely would stay here again and use their hot tub.

Google
It's NOT a 4 star hotel as it says. Don't fall for the fake reviews. There is no service by people, it was self check in even if you get there early. The rooms are super old. Bed sheets are literally super old and worn out, even have stains and mold. Grandpa's old house from the 70s - sheets and furnitures and all. I paid over $200 for a night, which was not worth it. You cannot get a comfortable sleep here with dirty old sheets and unclean old towels and find someone's hair here and there. Bathroom signs says to conserve water, but their toilet is still 5 gallon old toilet... its a joke The sign outside says you have to take off your shoes, but the floor/stairs is not that clean, which did not make sense at this old house. There is NO AC here. They have a dehumidifier machine that you can turn on in your room that runs super loud. You can hear the next door people snoring because everybody has to sleep with windows open- it's too hot. Breakfast is not real breakfast- they serve papaya and bread only. Makes you question if they are licensed to sell and serve food.

This is our 3rd visit to the Inn. This place is awesome. Time slows down and you feel the kinks start to leave. The laid back vibe is just what we needed when we arrived.||Amenities: beautiful botanical garden, hot tub, NO TV (there is very good wifi should you be inclined), breakfast (papaya boats and banana bread!) and an awesome staff.||This is not a boutique hotel. It is clean, comfortable and everything you need. It’ almost like staying at a cool relative’s place. Aloha and Ohana.||We got to know Tabby the GM at our last visit. She was there and we met Kate on our visit this time. They are 2 of the sweetest people.||I highly recommend the experience!

Tristan S.

Yelp
We stayed here two years ago and wanted to make sure we came back. The Volcano was interrupting, but the experience at the Volcano Inn was worth it. We love Tabbi as she was so welcoming and we will be back. Definitely out shined the Volcano house and I must stay.

Patricia H.

Yelp
Wonderful hosts. Tabby and other staff so friendly and helpful. Comfortable rooms. Loved banana bread and papaya boats. We stayed on third floor of main lodge. Quiet and clean. Enjoyed the hot tub. Very close to Volcano National Park. Ate at Thai restaurant in town very good. Wish we had got sandwiches at Eagle Landing cafe. Looked really good. Had a wonderful hamburger at Volcano House Lounge in the park.

Yelp
It was easy to check in and out the place was clean enough and fit our needs. It was a cool walk to get to the hot tub. There were a lot of trails weaving through the thicket I didn't explore any further than the hot tub. It was hot with no AC or fan and the window/screen were broken in the bathroom which had me a smidge uncomfortable since we had a ground floor room. Its location is awesome being so close to the entrance of the park we got to start our day pretty seamlessly.

Ivanna M.

Yelp
Amazing stay! The lobby is so pretty and the room was so comfortable. The breakfast was yummy and it's right near the national park

Jody M.

Yelp
Absolutely perfect. Quiet, spacious, comfortable, and a super short and easy drive to Volcanoes national park. Stayed here for two nights and I liked it better than the hotels that I paid 3x as much for. The fresh banana bread and papaya is AMAZING. With a sister living on Maui I visit Hawaii every couple years, I'll be staying here again for sure.

Yelp
Dishonest! Refused to honor our credit and ripped us off. TL;DR - Covid forced us to cancel our reservation in the spring of 2020. Volcano Inn gave us a one-year credit, but of course travel was still restricted after one year, so they extended our credit again. However, when we finally tried to rebook, they refused to honor our credit. The full story: 3/16/20 - We emailed to cancel our two-night reservation because of Covid. 3/30/20 - Vocano Inn issued a partial refund for one night. The second night was converted into a one-year credit. (I asked if they could simply refund us for both nights, but they said no.) 2/16/21 - California (where we live) was still banning non-essential travel. I emailed to request either a) a refund; or b) another extension of our credit. 2/16/21 - Volcano Inn replied: "Yes, we can definitely extend your credit since the pandemic is still unfortunately going strong. Just let us know whenever you have new dates and we can reschedule your reservation for you. Mahalo, Hotel Volcano Inn." (Note that there was no mention in this reply of a time limit or deadline.) 2/16/21 - I replied: "Thank you so much. We definitely want to come when it's safe . . . and when it fits with our vacation time." (Volcano Inn did not reply.) 8/18/22 - I contacted the inn to rebook. They replied that our credit had expired. 8/18/22 - I asked them to reconsider and reminded them of their email from 2/16/21. They replied: "After reviewing your reservation in detail, we could not find the reason why you were entitled to any credit at all." 8/20/22 - I reminded them of their email of 2/16/21. (No reply.) 8/23/22 - I emailed again. (No reply.) 8/28/22- I emailed again. They finally replied but again said our credit had expired. They claimed that their 2/16/21 email should have been understood to mean they were giving us a one-year extension on the credit. 8/28/22 - I pointed out that the 2/16/21 email *did not* contain anything about a deadline or a time limit. They replied, "We are sorry that you read it that way." There you have it. Volcano Inn did not honor their word, and they've cheated my family out of a one-night stay.

Yelp
Comfortable and clean accomodations, beautiful setting, staff are very warm and friendly. Breakfast was papaya boats and banana bread on the day I was there and both were very tasty. About a 3 minute drive from volcano national park. I would definitely recommend this spot to anybody looking to stay in the area.

Yelp
Stayed here for one night. Checked in after 3pm. Checked out around 8:30am the following day. The office is not in the same area as the house you're staying in. It's like an extra 5-10 minute drive. We stayed in a room meant for 5 people. There's a queen size bed, a pull out couch, and a twin size bed. There was 2 extra pillows but no covers for them. Also there was no extra sheets to use on the pull out couch. No extra blanket either so I was freezing. But it was pretty comfy. No shoe wearing allowed inside. Wifi and password located by the sign near the front door. The place itself is well maintained. Inside seemed clean. Outside landscape was very pretty. There is a hot tub a few steps away from our front door. Bathroom is decent size. They provided extra towels and robes. Water pressure in the shower isn't strong but they do provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Flush is powerful. There's a humidifier, a fire place, a fridge, a microwave, a toaster, a coffee maker, and drinking water provided. Lots of utensils as well. Seems cool to stay at a place that's "inside" a forest. There wasn't any outside noise from any animals that could keep you up or wake you. Very quiet and peaceful stay. Also there's two huge windows which is a bonus during the daytime because of all the gorgeous foliage and greenery. Went to breakfast at around 7:30. They provide very light breakfast. There's Kona coffee (and I'm normally not a coffee drinker but it was delicious), bandana bread, a papaya boat filled with yogurt, almond, banana, and some sort of fruit purée (maybe applesauce?). The papayas were ripe and perfect, first time trying a papaya. Overall, enjoyed my stay at Volcano Inn.

Yelp
Very nice place and beautiful landscape. Breakfast is refreshing and the jacuzzi was relaxing. No problem checking in and we had a private space to park our car which was right outside our window. The mirror on the ceiling right above the bed is odd and if you want to watch TV you would need to go into the community lobby area. The only con is the footsteps and the dragging of the furniture you can hear from upstairs which eventually settled down. 1st night no problem, but 2nd night I could not get the early sleep I hoped to get. I changed my rating because there are more pros than that one con.

Yelp
Cute hotel, pretty clean, but also kind of rustic. Bedding was not your typical white duvet covers, white sheets, and clean white towels, so they didn't have that clean feel to them. Also, we were told upon arrival that no shoes were allowed at the hotel. Would've been nice to know in advance. I would have packed some slippers or warm socks. Walls are thin and plumbing is noisy, but overall pretty good time. Breakfast was nice and surroundings very serene.

Lala P.

Yelp
loved it here. Tabi is great fun. I enjoyed the staff and the breakfast. There's a few nice little trails around the place and we highly advise you to bring a jacket.

Yelp
Wow! There are not enough fantastic adjectives to describe how great this place is. First off, we arrived and it was so tranquil and inviting. We met Isabella and she was just a breath of fresh air. She was a warm and welcoming site to the rainy and really cold day at the national park. We rented the room with a queen size bed and a twin with a private bathroom. The room had great space, was immaculate, and offered a wonderful bathroom. In the morning we had the absolute best breakfast made from Isbaella, papaya bread, banana bread, and yogurt. Everything was absolutely outstanding. I highly recommend checking this place out when you are in Volcano Village.

Yelp
Higher altitude. Cooler temps. Friendly staff. Unique accommodations. Incredible breakfast. This was one of my favorite places we stayed on the Big Island. It has a vibe that could be best described as "laid-back hippy treehouse". The fresh stuffed papaya breakfasts are incredible. I'm usually 100% opposed to the con-job that is "free breakfast" at hotels, but NOT HERE. The prices on the rooms are beyond affordable! They have hot tubs, but I didn't make time to try them out. Protip: trust the directions on their website, NOT on google maps. Entire loving relationships have ended for less!

Jenna J.

Yelp
Beautiful bed and breakfast. Perfect proximity outside the national park. Highly recommend a night here while in this area. Breakfast was amazing!

Yelp
Really low end Uncomfortable bed. Much nicer places to stay. Give this one a miss. Unfriendly manager.

Yelp
Would you stay at the worst room in a hotel cheaper than Motel 6? We wanted a hotel to stay near Volcano National Park on the big island of Hawaii, entered a date, and TripAdvisor listed available hotels and rates. The only hotel within the park was Volcano House, and the rate was $300+. And this is not your 4 Seasons hotel! At Volcano House you are paying for a small room with a view from the publicly accessible veranda of the volcano crater. Volcano Inn listed at $119 a night, the least expensive hotel listed, and a 5 minute drive from Volcano House. Take a $200 savings, and drive 3 additional miles! To get the cheapest rate, call the hotel directly, and get an additional discount. I make the reservation, and receive an e-mail, asking for full payment for my stay. Send personal check to the hotel within 5 days, to hold the reservation. This hotel does not take credit cards, only cash, or personal checks that have cleared prior to your stay. You don't want to do a midnight drive to an ATM in Hilo 40 minutes away. Cancel outside of 30 days prior to your stay, and lose 70% of your payment. Cancel within 30 days of your stay, and lose 100%. Don't book here until after you book your direct airline flights from the mainland. It's like marriage -don't commit until you are 100% certain! No exceptions to the cancellation policy -plane crash, floods in the area, Trump elected president- short of the volcano erupting and the lava flow pouring through the inn. And even then, you'll be accountable if your room is intact, even if you have to wear a gas mask! No volcano activity means minimal business. A full scale eruption with lava flowing into town, with the poisonous fumes also means no business. The owners want a happy medium, with some volcanic activity, but survivable!. Hardest thing about this place is finding it. There's a Volcano House, Volcano Gardens, Volcano Store, Volcano Arts, Volcano Golf all within Volcano Village. Place is at the end of Old Volcano road, with the buildings hidden behind a rain forest, with only a rickety overhead sign at the entrance. 10' wide 100' length gravel access lane, and hope you don't meet someone coming out, especially as the entering car would back up onto a blind curve. Remember those restaurant signs "no shirt, no shoes, no service"? Here it's no shoes for service. Sign at front of stairs to 2nd floor registration says "remove shoes before entering". Don't want you tracking in volcanic pebbles on the soles of your shoes, scratching the hardwood floor. Ladies, don't bring your good shoes, least they get swiped by someone like me, wearing baby blue, crisscross strap Chako sandals. Don't wear those socks with holes in them, and not white socks, where the dirt shows. Men, get a pedicure, as nobody wants to see your hairy, dried out feet with blackened, yellow, overgrown toe nails! Registration gives us a key with a 6" piece of wood attached, long enough to put a hole in your pocket. We get the worst of the 22 rooms in the hotel -ground floor next to the stairs going to the 2nd floor, right underneath the hardwood floors of the breakfast deck -no oversleeping in this room! Room with a view? Four tall windows with a view of the parking lot! Room with a view costs an additional $50. Place is immaculately clean and tidy, with no cockroaches to be seen. Firm and comfortable queen bed, Free Wifi, CRT TV from the previous century, humidifier, dvd player, overhead fan and area to hang clothes. Tile floor of fake wood. On the ceiling above the bed is a mirror. And you thought this was only in Vegas! No AC, no closet, no dresser. no coffee maker, no microwave, no refrigerator, no heater, no working deadbolt on front door. Upgraded room with everything available for $50 extra, except the AC and heater. Bathroom has its own full length window, which my wife covers with the translucent curtain. She doesn't want me flashing the guests, causing them to lose their appetites on their way to breakfast! Sink is 1980s style, with minimal counter space. No sink stopper and no bath tub stopper -this is deliberate so guests use less water. Narrow bathtub, or I'm just getting fatter! Water collected from roof drainage. Toilet has ancient plumbing and has to be flushed twice to flush everything. Immaculate rainfall landscaping with communal salt water hot tub. High winds at night cause plants and branches to blow back and forth, activating the motion detector lights in front of our translucent curtains. Spooky. 5am, we drive 15 minutes to the Jagger Museum for the best view of the lava flowing in the caldera. Breakfast upstairs is papaya boats filled with sliced banana, yogurt and macadamia nuts, along with banana bread, coffee and hot chocolate. Enough for seconds. I'm on the toilet, when everything shakes. Volcano erupting? Just the next door washer/dryer. Don't get a wet bottom from sloshing toilet water! Early 10am checkout time.

Yelp
Worst experience with a hotel ever. I booked day of and called in because you have to do self check in after 7pm. They said they would leave an envelope for my check in instructions. Soooo yeah, they forgot. So I arrived at midnight and no one was around and it was cold and I had just drove two hours from Kona. I was exhausted. I called the main line and the lady was an hour away but said the property manager lived downstairs and told me to knock on the glass. It didn't work. So she then tells me to just start screaming his name at midnight while other guests are trying to sleep which I did not. I waited for 45 mins until she could get a hold of him. When the guy finally woke up he looked up my reservation and was like yup you have one and I said I know I called earlier to make sure I could self check in and talked to you and it was like he had no clue we even talked. So I finally get to the room with the key they gave me, the place was unlocked, the door half open. I almost thought I might walk in on people sleeping for a second. It was thankfully empty, but that is not a very comforting feeling looking for bugs to make sure a bunch didn't get in with the door open. There were curtains I pulled over to block the sun in the morning because I wanted to sleep in since it was very late before I could even get into the room. Unfortunately for me there's a big skylight directly over the bed which is very bright and I woke up at sunrise. Zero refund or partial refund was ever even mentioned for my terrible experience. The surrounding vegetation was beautiful but the experience was 0/10. So yeah just go somewhere else.
google avatar

Yelp
It was an AMAZING stay! We woke up and had a breakfast of Banana Bread and Papaya yogurt boats. I will remember to come here the next time I fly to Hilo.

Yelp
Man, the aphrodisiacs were off the hook here!!! It all started with the mirror on the ceiling; neither of us have slept (wink wink) under a mirror. And we had the jacuzzi all to ourselves (wink wink). It was so romantic with the rain falling on the tin roof and red accent lights. We actually both enjoyed the inn better than the volcano. Please don't come come for me lol. Thank you for reigniting the fire! xoxo

Tyler S.

Yelp
Sadly the views were the only good thing about our room. Everything in the room should have been replaced decades ago. I've never sleep worse in a hotel room. The room had a very bad and very strong mold/ mildew smell that would not go away. There's clearly a major mold issue and seems like a serious health concern. The spring mattress seems like it's from the 80s, its super hard, and covered in a plastic bag that crinkles when you move. The pillows also seem like they are from the 80s. Very very flat and lumpy. The towels are also very old and off color. The sink and tub drains are also partly clogged and drain very slowly. The hot tub also had a nice view but was dirty and the water smelled very bad. This was unfortunate. Needless to say this was very disappointing as the setting/ scenery is very nice but the hotel has clearly seen better days and management is not doing sufficient upkeep and maintenance or cleaning.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Loved our stay here! I would recommend booking one of the corner window rooms, the view out into the rainforest landscape was too cool! The room had everything you could need including a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, utensils and even a wine opener. Also really enjoyed having a towel warmer (aka a swim suit dryer) in the bathroom! The breakfast of papaya and bread was simple but so perfect for this type of place. The staff was friendly and had great recommendations. There are a few hot tubs on the property. We only visited one and the water level was pretty low and it was evident that it hadn't been cleaned "daily" as advertised. This was the only downside to our stay here, but didn't warrant one less star because this place was that amazing! Stay here if you want a quaint rainforest bungalow experience! Highly recommend!

Marcia M.

Yelp
Loved our stay at the Volcano inn! Sweet people, amazing location, & loved our papaya boat breakfast! It was wonderful to soak in the hot tub after our daily adventures! It does get chilly here. Hilo was 84 and it was 68 here. It was in the 50's at night. When I looked up the weather to plan attire, I looked up Hilo. Should have looked up Volcano!

cherry d.

Yelp
Pro's (And the only reason for 2 stars) Gary at the front desk was super nice. Breakfast was included and the grounds are pretty. Good location Cons: We stayed in the Crater room w a queen bed and 2 bunk beds Hands down it was the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on! It was a spring mattress w literal springs poking out of it. They then added a plastic fitted sheet over the mattress so you couldn't move without hearing it or feeling it. My husband and I slept in seperate beds bc it was so bad. But All of the mattresses felt like that and sounded like that. Oh, & the pillows were awful. So, after a wonderful day it ended w a terrible nite of sleep and we both woke up w our backs hurting. If you care about decor-don't here. The furniture looked like a hog pog of garage sale items from the early 1990's. 1 out of 3 hot tubs worked. And the one that was working wasn't on this property. The room charge at most should be a hostel price not $189.

Benjamin J.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere and papaya bowls for breakfast! I recommend this place for any travelers on the East side of the Big Island.

Denise S.

Yelp
I stayed two nights at the Volcano Inn. My room was in the annex building on the ground floor - Mauna Ulu. The room was very clean and the forest view from the corner of the room was very nice. They provided plenty of towels and Terry robes for you to go to the hot tub. The hot tub area was very nice in a little cabana. The temp was perfect but they really need to repair the cover. They claim it is cleaned every day and it was pretty murky the second night I was there. The office and breakfast areas are upstairs in the office. So, this is certainly not a handicap friendly hotel. The breakfast was very good - fresh filled papaya and banana bread. Of course, they have a continuous supply of Kona coffee. They do need to make a small change to their silverware distribution at breakfast - the spoons are in a coffee mug with the bowl of the spoon facing up. So, during this crazy Covid time, the part of your spoon or fork that you eat with is possibly touched by other guests. Just turn the spoons so you can pull them out by the handle, please. While the bedroom was very clean, the mattress is in need of replacement. Plus, they cover the mattresses with plastic covers. So, you get to hear the crunching of plastic when you sit, lie and move around in the bed. Seriously, it's 2021 and they do have some great mattress covers that don't crunch and Amazon does deliver to Hawaii! There also is no way to get any air movement in the room that I was in. No ceiling fan or floor fan. Of course, this meant that my swimming suit was still wet the next morning. Thank goodness for the hair dryer as it saved the day. All in all, it was a nice stay but they really have some work to do. Also, I did not check TA before I booked and I probably would have gone another direction.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for about a week. I really have to acknowledge Izabela and Ulisses who are wonderful B&B hostesses. They made our stay so comfortable, with friendly hellos every morning while serving fresh papaya boats and banana bread. The coffee was delicious also. Very friendly staff and hospitality with great professional passion to serve their clients. The rooms are really beautiful, cabin style and cleanliness ready for our stay. We will definitely come back to Volcano and come back to this wonderful B&B with great service and hospitality!

Yelp
This is one of the coziest, most inviting places I've ever stayed. The daily breakfast and coffee were divine, possibly our favorite meal we had while on the Big Island. And spending evenings in the hot tub under the rain-sprinkled canopy was magical. Being so close to HVNP was an added bonus.

Karen S.

Yelp
Spent six nights here in the "gecko room." This room is underneath another room. Hence we had to tolerate constant noise from the upstairs people. When we asked if we could leave early and get a refund...we were firmly told..."no refunds." So we had to purchase earplugs and wear them. We never knew what to expect in the evening hours.

Nancy E.

Yelp
We had the most incredible stay at the Volcano Inn! We are a family of 4 and we all agree that Volcano Inn is by far the best stay of all of our travels. From the first moment on the property you know you are somewhere special. First impressions truly matter and Ku'u made sure we felt welcomed. Ku'u was the most warm, friendly and accommodating host. Another Part of our stay that was fantastic was sitting in the covered hot tub listening to rain fall. In the morning, we woke up to spectacular jungle views. For breakfast we were served papaya yogurt bowls and home-made banana bread. Yelp does not provide enough stars to measure our experience. Volcano Inn is much more than A place to stay--it is a one-of-a-kind experience!

Yelp
This place is a hop, skip and a jump to where the lava flows. The folks are very hospitable and take incredible care of this Inn.. Do not be confused by other places that have similar names.. "Volcano Inn" is the right place. The price is awesome for the big space you get. The shower is wonderful. The decor is very homey and artsy.. lots of wonderful lamps all around. You also get coffee and little muffins downstairs waiting for you. Nice and quiet as well. The owner has been in business for 25 years and he is chock-full of information and history.. get him chatting!

Yelp
Keep your normal hotel quality expectations low if going to this place. The bedding, TV, furniture are far beyond their buy/sell dates. Where have you paid almost $200 a night and had an old 4:3 TV? While it's recognized one is not here to watch television the cost of a flat screen seems attainable with a $200 a night room rate. Mismatched linens and bedspreads look to be decades old. No maid service if you stay two nights. Friendly staff was hoping you don't notice all the cheap decisions by ownership. Breakfast food was a papaya filled with brown banana slices and yogurt and slices of banana bread. (Hope you like bananas.) Quaint comes with a price here. Look past the run down stuff and you'll be ok. Low expectations required. Tv and reception is a joke. We lost signal each day there. Reports asking for repair went unanswered. Staff to be commended for their friendliness. Place needs a new owner who would put money back into his investment. Unless desperate, go elsewhere.

Yelp
PLEASE READ WHY I ONLY GAVE 3 STARS. I WANT TO GIVE THEM 4 OR 5 so badly. ....But sadly, until they update a few things i cannot. But let me start on the positives: POSITIVES: -- Very CLEAN!! We stayed in 3 different rooms over 4 nights (long story, that starts with getting stuck on the island due to a tropical storm). But the rooms are pretty immaculate and the floors are shiny -- Good ambiance -- Absolute beautiful location: in the midst of an amazing jungle complete with thick greenery, beautiful flowers/plants, and calming jungle noises. -- Beautiful big windows that allow sunlight & jungle viewing -- The windows do open so you can get a nice breeze. Screens to keep bugs out. -- View from the rooms is gorgeous and fairly private -- Many of the rooms have the standard amenities (Fridge / Microwave / T.V. / Toaster) -- Multiple Jacuzzis (shared, but very private. Went twice and saw nobody else there) -- The prices are very fair -- So close to the volcano! Just a few mile drive down the road to the National Park -- Extremely secluded. The streets are pitch black at night. Like you cannot see your hand in front of your face pitch black. I've never seen anything like it and it's amazing. NEGATIVES: -- My #1 biggest issue was the beds: ---- Bed comment #1: The mattresses are beyond horrible. You'd go to bed feeling ok and wake up in PAIN. They're probably worse than just sleeping on the floor. It literally felt like someone stuffed paper bags into a sheet and that's what you were laying on. It was very uncomfortable, and I'm sorry, but 90% of what you're paying for when you rent a room IS A BED! ------ Bed comment #2: ***The bed makes the stay***. Once they adapt to this, I will gladly give them 5-stars because all the other negatives are minute. Some of the mattresses were worse than others. ----- Bed comment #3: Kilauea Iki was fairly do-able, it was definitely better than others. ----- Bed comment #4: I don't know what they're using for a base, but the mattresses hang over by a couple inches on each side. So they are NOT getting the support they should (and also takes away from personal sleeping space). -- Furnishings are extremely outdated. We felt like we were in a cabin in Wisconsin. Some of this stuff can be updated fairly cheaply, and would make a huge difference. i.e. - tv's. The tv's are from like 1990. I mean, you can get a decent HD Flat-screen for like $150 nowadays. -- The rooms smell musty. No doubt this is due to the humidity & its not really their fault, but they should try to find a way to combat this. It's really off-putting when you first walk in. Once you're in there for a while, crack some windows, etc.. you don't really notice it anymore (until you lay down and smell it on the pillows & bedding). They DO have de-humidifiers in each room. -- NOT a full kitchen. We were under the impression it had a full kitchen, so we actually stopped at the super-expensive little store in town and bought groceries that require a stove only to find out that there is no stove. We basically threw $70 of food down the drain. -- People running the place are hit or miss. Some are really sweet and some are a little cranky -- They don't accept credit cards (supposedly to keep costs down) so you have to send in a money order Please note i drafted this in 2016 and forgot to publish, so this is a late publish. If anything has changed/been updated since then, i apologize. Overall this place is set in an idillic, amazingly beautiful location and is sooooo close to the volcano! If they can just update the damn beds it would be a 4-5 star lodging.

Yelp
If you're going to visit Kiluaea or traveling across the island the south way, then you should take a night to stop here. The rooms at the Chateau Kiluaea are incredibly comfy (stayed in the Continental Suite), it's really easy to find, and it is SO close to the entrance to Volcanoes National Park! My wife and I got a bottle of wine at the store and forgot to get a bottle opener, but we looked in the cupboard and BAM! 2 wine glasses and an opener :D The Koi pond full of bull frogs was a nice touch. We didn't bother with the continental breakfast. Since it was extra anyway, we drove around the corner to the actual Inn where we had an awesome breakfast of eggs, sausage, and french toast! I also highly recommend the restaurant down the street called Thai Thai (best traditional Thai food since I was in Hong Kong) A++

Yelp
This hotel is part of the Chateau Kilauea collection; their main office is located at a different address... where you check in at and where they serve breakfast daily, starting at 7:30 am. I'd describe this hotel as a cross between a budget B&B and a hostel... though it seemed one of the cheapest, best options in Volcano (when I was looking). We were happy with our stay here. The location is nice. The price is great. The accommodations are not luxurious, but the place is clean and comfortable enough (and there is really cute landscaping). The building has been well cared for and is updated with recent kitchen and bath remodels. The breakfast (for $6.50/person) was ok, but nothing to write home about (just fruit, bread/bagels, and coffee, basically). The rooms are on the small side, but that is ok because you can hang out in the common area and have access to a full (shared) kitchen w/ fridge. The bathroom comes with towels and washcloths and (somewhat surprisingly) soap, shampoo, and lotion! Some other folks there complained about the noise; I didn't bother me in the room we stayed in (Malia Room)... but if that is a concern for you, stay on the top floor..? Be forewarned, EVERYTHING in Volcano closes early; I think the general stores are open until about 7pm. Hotel check-in is from 3-5pm (after that, you do "late check-in" on your own). Last seating for dinner at restaurants in Volcano is 8:30pm. So... do yourself a favor, and try to get to Volcano in the late afternoon. Plus, if you arrive early enough, you can hit up the park's visitors center before it closes at 5pm; ask the nice rangers for advice on hikes and get maps so you can plan out the day ahead..!

Yelp
The volcano inn was a wonderful place to unwind and take in the natural wonders of the Big Island of Hawaii. Fresh fruit, singing birds, comfortable bungalows and great amenities. Breakfast was a wonderful way to start the day. Checking in and out with Tabby (like the cat she says) was a pleasant task and provided the perfect bookends to our stay. We highly recommend the Volcano Inn, and would like to thank Tabby for making our stay extra special! We felt like family!

Yelp
This place was a find. About 5 miles from the park entrance, and a much better price than the hotel in the park. It's tucked away in lush green surroundings. Our room had a small refrigerator, microwave, and all the dishes and utensils we needed. The owner was very friendly. If I ever visit the big island again, I'll make a point of staying more than one night here (they have a discount for longer stays).

Yelp
Literally the only company that refuses to refund the monies paid for our reservation due to our military family being travel restricted due to Covid 19. Very sad! They also refuse to discuss the matter over the phone and only send the same cookie cutter response via email.

Yelp
To begin on a positive note, the grounds and accomdations are lovely. The room is nicely furnished and clean. With high pitched ceilings and hardwoods floors it has a rustic charm but is very polished. Check in was a breeze and parking is easy. The location can't be beat, just 2 (or less) short miles to the park entrance. We were able to check in and then drive over to Volcano National Park at 5 p.m., giving us a few more hours of daylight to explore. The following morning, again, easy check out, and we got an early start to our day at Volcanoes. Now, I'm sorry to say, I've got a few cons. Perhaps I was unlucky with the room they gave us, but honestly, I didn't sleep well. We were located on the top floor, near the reception area, in the building that houses the kitchen, dining room and office. It was hot and stuffy upstairs-no fans at all. With the windows open we got a nice breeze, but that didn't kick in until 1 or 2 a.m. This is obviously not the fault of the owners, but when booking, you may want to request a downstairs room. Being in a room directly next to the commomon area, near the dining area and near the kitchen, I was awoken at 5 a.m. to clanging and footsteps and general kitchen noise that you'd experience in a house with only hardwood floors. Once breakfast began being served, the chatter from guests awoke me again around 7. It's charming, well situated, well priced and a nice room, but if you book here, please be sure to request a room that's not directly near the office or dining area. Other than that, the papya and banana bread for breakfast were delightful and the nice younger lady walking around greeting us was a sweetheart. She gave some great tips for the area and for the return trip home. Maybe with a different room, I could bump it up a star. The total experience was very nice except for the room location.

Yelp
We stayed at the Caldera room. I would have given the place 5 stars if the refrigerator was cleaner and if there was a heater upstairs. Besides that, service was great. Lisa checked us in and was very accommodating. The BEST for last... The included breakfast! The most delicious breakfast I've had in the island so far. It was so good I wanted to take some to go and Tiana made sure that it happened without even a fuss. It made my day! This place was so worth every penny. I know I will miss this breakfast when I'm back home. I will definitely come back here again if I'm traveling to Hawaii. Thank you for everything! Mahalo!

Yelp
The accommodations are excellent. I believe some of this property is in Escrow. This might be the last time we are able to stay at this specific cabin. Great location overall, the hot tubs are horrendously filthy and way to hot so that I as a huge bummer. Also if you buy food be careful as the fridge only will turn on when you are back and put the electrical key into the wall unit. Otherwise everything turns off including the fridge when you head out for the day to play. If this place stays open I suggest they inform people of this and fix the tubs we would have really loved to sit and relax in those.

Yelp
Very happy with our 5-night stay while we hiked VNP. The coffee, banana bread, and papaya boats were great each morning sitting in front of the wood fireplace. The room was clean, comfortable, and had a great rainforest view.

Yelp
Not what we expected. Poor welcome, no hot water, dirty floor, right near highway with noisy cars, and mattress hanging over box spring by 8 inches on each side!!! Has potential given location, but do a poor job of managing.

Yelp
Host was great and all the staff members were friendly. The room had everything you need including robes to go to the hot tub! The breakfast was delicious and nutritious with the papaya boats and banana bread. The fire in the morning was a very nice touch esp when I was grabbing my caffeine for the morning before the sunrises to head out to the park for some hikes. And great location!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here in 2019 and it was one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed. The rooms themselves aren't anything fancy, but the location! Each room felt very secluded and private because it is literally in the middle of a forest. I couldn't even see the neighboring houses through the trees outside the window. There were several hot tubs set in similarly-secluded locations, and even though they were communal we rarely ran into anyone because it wasn't that busy when we were there. It was my husband's favorite part of the trip and we both loved sitting in the peaceful hot tubs listening to the rain fall on the roofs after a long day of hiking.

Yelp
I'm late in writing this review but still wanted to share my experience in case anyone with kids was thinking of staying here. We stayed one night in July 2019 while exploring the west coast of the island and visiting Hilo. At the time our boys were six and almost three and we were excited to have them sleep "in the jungle" as they called it. The hotel is broken up into different buildings and we were staying on the top floor of one building. The room was a little odd but comfortable. We read the instructions on how the dehumidifier works and made ourselves at home. Our boys enjoyed walking down the paths and we used the hot tub which was nice. The reason for the downgrade in my star rating is two fold. The first, and most substantial reason, was the dehumidifier situation. Yes, you are in the jungle and it gets very humid, but we literally had to wake up about 4 times during the night to empty the water collector on the dehumidifier because it was full and shut itself off. The dehumidifier was very noisy and it was obvious when it turned off. This did not make for a restful night's sleep, and I don't have a solution (larger dehumidifier??) but it was really annoying and defeats the purpose of paying for a room to sleep in. The second reason for giving three stars was the odd behavior of the gentleman during our check out. He made a point to comment on us having kids with us and how we had been given a room on the top floor but usually they don't put kids on the top floor and hopefully the downstairs people didn't mind our kids. We didn't have downstairs neighbors, the room below us was empty during our stay, and our kids didn't make anymore noise than anyone else would have, they are not out of control. I thought it was weird that he didn't ask us how our stay was, if we enjoyed ourselves, etc. just that he hoped the nonexistent downstairs neighbors didn't mind the nonexistent disturbance from our kids. Not good customer service. Overall, we had a fun stay here but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it. Too many quirks and not enough perks. Sorry!

Yelp
AMAZING STAY at Volcano Inn. Simply magical. We arrived very late and hit up the hot tub. Woke up in the morning to a delicious breakfast and coffee. I felt like I was in a tree house. Very simple and beautiful place and an overall 1000/10 experience.

Yelp
We stayed in the Pu'u O'o room overnight and had a wonderful experience. We met Ku'u at the office, the woman who made breakfast, and the landscaper, they are such nice people :) Our own private parking spot was right outside of our charming little room. It was just perfect for our stay. We appreciated the water dispenser and bathrobes in our room. There was also a mirror above our bed which was fun. Breakfast was delicious! The only thing I wished we had was a fan. There's no AC but considering the price of the room and the overall experience, it is definitely worth it! We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I have been to Volcano many many times and found out shortly after checking in that this is the place I should have been staying every time. If you want the experience of the thick forest that surrounds the Volcano area this place will be injecting you right in the middle of it. I live in California now, but was raised in Kona for 24 years and can promise you this is what makes the park area so special. The price is amazing compared to the Volcano House. If your a non resident with no kamaaina discount available the Volcano House is a pretty penny to stay at. Volcano Inn is about 2 minutes from the park entrance and has the same forest area around it that the park has. If you purchase a park pass ($15) it's good for a week, and allows you to come and go within the park as you please, no matter what time it is. The one thing the Volcano Inn is missing would be the view of the crater which Volcano House does provide. But for 3x the price and tourist everywhere, I would rather go into the park and purchase a $3.50 cup of coffee and look at the crater then. Make sure you take a trip to the Jagger Museum at night to see the red glowing lava pit. It's a must see. I usually go around 11pm. Back to the inn. There are hot tubs out in the forest with access during all times of the day and night. Really neat to go sit in them when your in a rain forest listening to the rain fall around you. And there salt based with no harsh chemicals:) Some people complained about the free yummy morning papaya, banana bread being too far from where there're staying. Its no big deal at all. Most large hotels make you walk across long distances to get to the lobby anyway. Everything is laid out fine. It's actually part of the experience to NOT have people everywhere you look. So I appreciated being away from everything in a secluded area. It was great! Pass on the $20 per person buffet breakfast at Volcano House, and go to Lava Rock Cafe for about a 1/3 of the price. For dinner I highly recommend Ohelo Cafe!! Amazing food! Not cheap, but worth every $! Volcano Inn is wonderful, with amazingly sweet people that run it. The rooms where clean, with huge windows to views the forest. Also near the park within minutes. It's also the best price you will find in the area that actually has a great place to stay. Thanks again. I'll be back!

Yelp
It's really a great deal. While most accommodations in the area will run you well into the $150-200 a night range, you have clean, convenient, homey accommodations for $75 a night for the cheapest rooms. I stayed for 5 nights here and used it as a home base for day trips around the island. Although if I were to do it again, I would stay in other cities, I think this is a great place to check out if you plan to spend an evening near the National Park in order to see the glow of the volcano at night. Volcano Hale is not part of the main Chateau Kilauea complex. There are many properties. This particular building is on a very small street (with amazing night sky) and where you can see the glow of the volcano on a clear night. I got one of the upstairs rooms, which shares a bathroom with another room. On the first floor is a kitchen, dining area, and another bathroom. There is another bathroom in the basement. The showers have good pressure and hot water. My only issue is that in the morning, there are many rooms vying for those bathrooms, so if you aren't aggressive, you may find yourself waiting for quite a while. The main lodge is where you check in and have a small breakfast. Quaker Oatmeal, fresh papaya, and coffee. We had this everyday for breakfast. I am still missing how fresh that papaya was. It is located right next to Volcano Village, so very convenient. If you're looking for an affordable, clean place to stay, this place is for you. If you're looking for luxury...well, you shouldn't bother staying in Volcano Village.
