On the Grid : Volkshaus

"Usually rooms in Zurich are pretty narrow and low – but not at Volkshaus. The huge hall with the beautiful interior and seperators creates a magical atmosphere, that makes you want to stay forever. They serve regional food - some pretty good classic Swiss dishes." - Y7K

Ate here before a concert at the Volkshaus. Very cool restaurant with high ceilings, large windows and warm decoration. A welcoming ambience .Quiet, but busy. Food was very good. They offered a large variety if classic dishes with seasonal dishes. Service was excellent. Attentive, friendly and efficient. They also have outdoor seating I believe. Would highly recommend coming to restaurant Volkshaus. Thank you.

I went there for lunch for a couple of times. The food is great, well prepared, sincere and humble. Service is nice and the ambience is authentic.

I was here waiting for a gig in the attached theatre. A man was wheeling a tray of pork around and stopped at my table. He babbled about how fresh and one of a kind the pork was under his cloche. Being a tourist, I'm just gonna go along and go for it instead of menu indecisions. He comes back with the veg and potatoes. My word, that pork was one of a kind! And that mash and those carrots? Well, with that mustard gravy that good, it's all just melting in my mouth. Dessert was also yummy and very traditional. It was very expensive, but everything in Switzerland is, so I can't exactly dock it points for being pricey!

The Hall for the concerts looks like a dance hall, not optimal for seeing the scene. However, nice good building.

We met our friends for dinner here. The atmosphere was very nice. The restaurant has a storied history. We tried the special, lamb shoulder. It was delicious. The service was great. The wine list is a bit short but has some good options.

Google
Great acts, but the concert hall is horribly packed. Seriously, who on earth thought it is a good idea to put that many rows of chairs so close to each other? Adding the bad ventilation, the experience was overshadowed by recurring waves of smells from visitors sitting 20cm before/behind/left/right. I know 2 rows less would be ~2k less profit (20 seats per row, 50.-/ticket), but they just pushed it too much. Won't come back for sure.

Special interiors with high ceilings but cozy. Service is fast, friendly and professional. Food differs from very good to mediocre. For example, Cordon Bleu was a gigantic unsubtle hunk of meat running with a huge amount of melted cheese. Pricey, but it is Zürich so you can't expect cheap food, especially meat here. Nice wine menu and a very cozy old styled bar.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite dinner places in Zurich, especially during fall when they serve "Wild" (game). Service is attendive and friendly. Food is not cheap but very good quality and delicious so definitely worth the splurge.

Yelp
I finally ate dinner here yesterday (Friday), and it was fabulous! You can make reservations via their online system, but it only showed me the option for 8 pm, and I wanted dinner at 7 pm, so I had to call the restaurant to do that. When I arrived, the staff was really friendly and accommodating to my English-only speech skills and even gave me an English menu. They had a special daily menu that included a veal roast... with a guy wheeling a cart around that served up the veal roast with mushroom sauce, carrots, and polenta. The decor was really nice and the food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. I ordered the veggie salad, thinking it was a garden salad, but it was actually a yummy antipasto of cooked veggies, including pumpkin, artichokes, and slices of Parmesan cheese. To try something new, I got the pumpkin strudel as my main dish. It came in a lovely flaky pastry filled with ricotta cheese, and you could really taste the amaretto in the sauce. My friend got the meatballs with rosemary gravy and leek mashed potatoes. I tried one of the meatballs, and it was tender and juicy. Prices are typical for Zürich. Dinner for two, including starters, main dishes, shared bottle of water, and 4 glasses of red wine (French Syrah Cuvée 2008, Château Haut-Blanville, Côteaux du Languedoc) came out to CHF 125.

Yelp
The service wasn't friendly in the beginning and got friendlier after they made repeated mistakes. First they brought the meals from the table next to us (who got there after us). Then we switched plates with our neighbors. Then they brought what our table ordered... well almost - one of the dishes was wrong. The food, on the other hand was very good. Prices are average. We sat outside and the sign on the table asking customers to order at the bar was confusing because they actually ended up offering service outside. The interior looks very nice though with a contemporary-traditional look. A place I don't NEED to go back to, but I wouldn't necessarily have a strong aversion to it either, hence 3 stars.

Yelp
If you ever want to grab a coffee after visiting the "Kanzlei" Flee Market make sure you stop by "Volkshause" it's a beautiful multipurpose building founded in 1910. The host concerts, drama event and they have a Restaurant/ Café too. You walk in and get a feel that this place has been around for a while; the waitress uniform is a black dress, white apron - all that was missing was a little white hat and a feather duster! My sister and I just decided to grab a Cappuccino and espresso which was a total of CHF 10,-. You order everything at the bar. The restaurant was closed but I took a glance in and its looks so LOVELY - definitely going back there. The food seemed pricy but then again you're in the city and we live in Switzerland soooo expect to pay about CHF25,- to CHF35,- for a dish.

Yelp
This place is big and has spacious bar area. A bit bright and restaurant bar ambiance so it feels a bit casual. There are some cozy seatings near bar area. Drinks are great and cocktails are only 15 CHF (bargain price for ZH!). Margherita was better than vodka sour. Bartenders are attentive. Not as hipster as other local bars but good bar for a drink or two. PS: No complimentary nuts or nibbles ...

Yelp
Very nice place, good atmosphere, also family friendly Got the brunch, (volkshaus style) and it was incredibly delicious (and healthy). My favorite part was probably how they gave everything in small well presented portions. Must try if in Zurich during brunch time!

Yelp
Had an amazing meal here. I got the special roasted leg of lamb with polenta and the rhubarb bread pudding for dessert. The quality of the food and the cocktails are top notch. Expect to spend between 30-50 CHF per person, plus 10-15 per cocktail. Not touristy at all; they didn't even have an English menu.

Yelp
The low wide cushioned benches and little tables are a great place to sit, relax, and chat --- if you can find space. Since it's first-come, first-serve, there's lots of hovering and "Oh, are you done?". The lemon cake (Zitronenkuchen) is excellent --- probably the best I've had in Zürich. As usual around Zürich, the hot chocolate wasn't very hot or chocolatey --- the "kafi fertig" (spiked coffee) was much tastier. Late afternoon is apparently "baby and coffee" time --- I could see three strollers from my chair. Good homey atmosphere.

Yelp
Delicious cordon bleu! Not flat as usual, and filled with tons of delicious cheese. Decor and staff costume is very old, borderline too old.

Yelp
Technically a great place but you can't have an order of fries outside. So we just had a beer. Facepalm

Yelp
A very interesting (huge) restaurant in a beautiful area of central Zurich. I think English menus can be a bit deceptive but the "meatloaf" was more like a giant hunk of bologne. Unfortunately, that was not what we were looking for but the light pastry puffs filled with spinach were good as well as the thick tomato sauce it was served in. The steak tartare was very average but I think that's just how tartare is in Zurich. There's a lot of stuff going on in it or it's just mashed up a LOT and it's a strange pink/grey color instead of vibrant red like I'm used to seeing in Italy or in the states. The table bread was very good but the salad was not for me. It was a hodge podge at best that was tasteless even with strawberries on top. The portions are filling though so there was no room for dessert. There was a huge party going on for a member of the Swiss National Council but the service was still good. I'll be back to grab a beer in the cool front bar area but won't be staying for a meal.

Yelp
Recommended by some local friends. Best meal in Zurich. Had no idea what I ordered, but ended up with lamb meatballs and mashed potatoes with gravy. Sat at the bar because the place was packed. Energy was buzzing in the restaurant. Good draft beer.
