We were a family of 4 with 2 teenage sons along. We all loved our long weekend at the Trapp Family Lodge. We stayed in the Villas. The duplex 2-bedroom townhouse was divine. Our boys enjoyed having the entire 2nd floor to themselves, and we appreciated the small kitchen for making coffee, tea and simple breakfasts which we enjoyed on the screen porch overlooking a magnificent view.||We did not mind that the villas were located a short hike from the main lodge and fitness center....because there are gorgeous trails to follow. We loved hiking them and then feeling a bit more hungry for all our delicious meals and drinks.||All the food and drinks we had were superb. We ate 2x at the brewery and 2x at the main dining room. Even though the resort is a bit short-staffed, the grounds are still immaculate/well-maintained, and all the employees have clearly been through some top notch hospitality-training at this property because it shows. ||Genuine friendliness beamed through every employee we met. That is why it is easy to remember and mention their names here: Tim, Kieron and Michelle in the main dining room, Ella in the brewery (who waited on us 2x), Faith and Amanda the yoga teachers (amazing!), and the lovely man who checked us into yoga at the fitness center 2x (we do forget his name, sorry). These were the loveliest people who made our stay superb.||We also have to mention, we loved the HIKING WITH GOATS---omg--where else can you do this? ||We have visited the Von Trapp Family Lodge 3x over the past decade, but always in the summer season. We look forward to returning in the winter one day to experience all they have to offer in the snow.

Went to the brewery with my family and some dear friends! It was absolutely beautiful and even more delicious! Allergens are clearly labeled, and substitutions can easily be made! Lots of gluten free options, including more than just gluten free buns! What a treat, the property was stunning and the service was great! It also has outdoor dining which is dog friendly! What a treat!

7/16/25–We recently rented a charming lake house in Sunapee, where we hosted our friend and his daughters, aged 17 and 20, visiting from Florida. Our friend was adamant about visiting the Von Trapp Lodge, urging us to watch 'The Sound of Music.' Surprisingly, despite my love for history, I had never delved into the story of this famous family before. Despite the reluctance to watch the movie, we did make a detour to the birthplace of Ben & Jerry after lunch. Stay tuned for our review on that! At the Von Trapp Lodge, we walked in, and even though I’ve been to Germany and not Austria, there was something familiar about the place—clear air, stunning scenery, and, as my friend noted, your ears will pop as you drive there (mine were just fine!). We parked, and there were tons of buses, but I had Rambo with me, so I tucked him in my bag and entered with my dog. Stepping inside, I felt like I was on the Queen Mary 2—wooden scents, beautiful carpets, and a menu that screamed German delicacies. But we weren’t ready for a big meal, so after sightseeing, we headed to the Von Trapp Brewery Restaurant (review coming soon). This place is absolutely beautiful! I’d definitely recommend stopping by the gift shop—it’s filled with cute things. I ended up buying some sweets imported from Germany and a coffee cup celebrating the 75th anniversary of the lodge. A definite must-see spot!

The weekend at the Lodge started with cookies in the lobby after check in. There were five varieties to choose from. The double chocolate chip were my personal favorite. Then I had time to walk the trails before dinner on the patio. I highly recommend the wiener schnitzel. (The planters on the patio attracted hummingbirds which added to my delight). The baked goods at the coffee house were another highlight of my weekend. The croissants, danishes and cinnamon rolls were all scrumptious. Lastly, Faith's Sunday morning yoga class left me feeling refreshed in body, mind, and spirit.

Not adapted for people with mobility issues. The cobblestone and grounds are very difficult to ambulate on, especially to the pool or attending tours. We stayed in a dog-friendly room but dogs aren’t allowed on tours or dining, even though he was in a zipped up covered stroller. I was not informed of this during placing my reservations as it appeared to be dog friendly to well trained dogs on the websites. We waited past check-in time for our room to be ready. The bathroom wasn’t clean and there were pistachio nuts on the floor, as well as an employee’s walkie-talkie in the room. On the flip side, the front desk and service staff were very friendly and informative. The tour guide was amazing.

Google
Room was good generally, with two notable exceptions. First, the master bedroom rug smells terrible. It’s very old. Lots of mold and mildew. My wife had a hard time sleeping because of it. Second, there’s a hole in the edge of the living room floor. Looks like they did some heating repairs requiring some digging into the underlying concrete, and never completed the restoration. Unsightly, but not unsafe. The unit definitely needs some updating, but we still enjoyed our week there.

Just a wonderful experience. Lodge was wonderful. We ate at the Main Dining room for dinner, breakfast, and lounge. We ate in the kaffhouse and Beer Hall. Everything we ate was delicious. We did yoga, meet the cows, beer tasting and family history. We really enjoyed all of those. We never leave the lodge to go into Stowe because there was so much to do there.

We loved every minute of our stay at the Von Trappe Family Lodge from the time we entered the front door until we left the Kaffehause after breakfast.||The staff make you fell very welcomed. The mountain views are wonderful and we enjoyed our balcony and large window. Thank you!

Yelp
The perfect place for a winter get away! And from the looks of it, a perfect place for a getaway during any season... The property is huge with miles of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails. The trails are well groomed and you can tell they take great care of everything around the property. We stayed in the main lodge and our room was spacious yet cozy with amazing views of the mountains. There was a great balcony which would be lovely if it hadn't been 11F out. Brrrr! They offer a tasty brunch buffet, and we enjoyed dinner in the main lodge one evening. Located a quick 5 minute drive from downtown Stowe, it's easy to venture into town for a meal. We went on the Meet the Cows tour which was a fun experience. There are lots of cute Scottish cows on the property and the tour was a good way to learn more about the cows as well as some history about the Von Trapp family. I hope to be back one day to experience what the place had to offer during the warmer times of year.

Yelp
Long ago, I stayed at the original Von trappe lodge before it burned down. Last night I thought it would be a big treat to take my seven-year-old granddaughter to the lodge main dining room for dinner. She loves sound of music. I was surprised at how rundown it was. The waitresses, in wrinkled dirndls were pretty good, but the place had no sound of music ambience at all. It could've been anywhere. The original Lodge really put you in an Austrian mood. I got the feeling that it was all about money now. Like one of those huge ocean liners that just crampeople in and don't even resemble a boat they are so huge. It was too bad.

Yelp
Exactly what you're imagining.. A perfect Vermont getaway. Even on a misty day, gorgeous views in every direction. Cross country skiing for all levels. Lauren in the ski shop was immensely helpful and cheerful. Fun activities in the fitness center and lodge, family friendly shows at night, great beer and cocktails. The kaffeehous has your maple latte and warm apple strudel waiting- along with a fire burning in their fireplace! Hope to return one day.

Yelp
Went here with my parents as part of our Vermont Vacation on August 28th 2023. We didn't stay at the hotel or anything but i'm sure that it is beautiful, especially if one is overlooking the mountains. We drove and parked in the parking lot, and Will say "The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music", in other words, the mountain view is very beautiful. Unfortunately, there were no tours because it was a monday. Which i was disappointed about actually. We did look in the gift shop, and my mom got a magnet and an ornament. I was considering getting a book about the real maria, but didn't. Restrooms that were located in the gift shop was very clean as well. There also seems to be lots of things to do there, like one can run around the trails, or bike probably too. Definetely a must stop- even if it is just for the views!

Yelp
The Trapp Family Lodge is what you imagine and dream of when you think of the northeast countryside, especially in the autumn. It's so amazing that the Vontrapp family made this legacy and massive farm out of basically having nothing when they came to the US. The service is top notch and the grounds and hiking trails are super. The restaurant is solid and you can pretty much enjoy your stay here without having to go anywhere else.

Yelp
The Trapp Family Lounge has year-round activities such cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, hiking, mountain biking, tennis, and yoga. You can experience one of there many on site restaurants or special culinary offerings such as tours of the Von Trapp Brewing . My mother researched this place before we came to Vermont and she wanted to visit. The lounge definitely has history behind how the Trapp family came into the United States and how the Trapp Family Lounge all began. In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family toured the United States as the Trapp Family Singers before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont, on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. In the summer of 1950, they began welcoming guests to a rustic, 27-room family home/lodge. After a devastating fire in 1980, the original structure was replaced by the new Trapp Family Lodge, a striking, 96-room alpine lodge situated on 2,600 acres offering magnificent indoor and outdoor resort amenities. The entire property is owned and operated by the von Trapp family. You can learn all about the von Trapp family history by reading below or taking a tour while staying at our resort. My mother and I toured the hotel but without a tour guide. We did not stay here. We just visited. As we walked into the hotel, it had many artifacts and information about the lounge. The lounge is definitely Austria influenced and the decor really is back in its time. All the furniture was very old fashioned and so was the hotel. It looked liked it was stuck in the past time. The hotel was very clean and the front desk personal was gracious enough to give us a map and marked all the places on the grounds he recommended we should go. The outside is beautiful. It's filled with a backdrop of mountains and sky's that were just beautiful and breathtaking. We rode around on the grounds but we couldn't find anything that was marked because the grounds are so big. It must've took us like twenty minutes alone to get off the grounds. Although we didn't get to see much of we wanted, the experience was wonderful to see the atmosphere and to learn the history behind the Trapp Family. I recommend getting a tour guide. I checked the pricing of the hotel and it's almost four hundred dollars to stay for a night. The complaints I seen on Yelp were mostly due to the rooms not being up to date and the nightly prices don't add up to the rooms. You should definitely do your homework before staying because it might not be your style.

Yelp
A sincere wanderlust has thrived in our family for fifty plus years. We have visited all 50 states, all Canadian provinces, Mexico, Central America, Eastern and Western Europe, and China. Often our condo exchanges have provided an excellent home away from home. With nearly 400 condo exchanges (or using our own ten weeks), we have carefully studied amenities, reviews, and other variables in selecting the unknown. Given all of these years, we can count the number of poor exchanges on one hand. New England is a distinct geographic area of the U.S., and New England provides several unique subcultures and mindsets while visiting with the citizens of the small towns and the larger cities. This region is truly a four-season destination, and this article will focus on the Trapp Family Guest House (700 Trapp Hill Road, Stowe, VT 05672,802-253-8511.) Today a second Trapp property exists: The Villas at Trapp Family Lodge (P.O. Box 1428, Stowe, VT 05672,802-253-8511.) Americans of my generation are familiar with the Von Trapp family who emigrated from Austria in the U.S. shortly following the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. While there is a good deal of history concerning the family, many Americans are familiar with "The Sound of Music," which originally opened as a Broadway musical in 1959 starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. However, Julie Andrews starred as Maria in the 1965 academy award winning film that brought national acclaim to the Von Trapps, who by this time were known as the Trapp family. The family actually located in Stowe, Vermont in 1950. The original lodge featured an Austrian theme, and the time-shares were added later. Several members of the family still own the enterprise. The Trapp Family Lodge is a 2,400 acre setting for the nature enthusiast. The Trapp Family Guest House is about one and one-half hours from Killington, VT., the largest ski area in the east. However, there are several alpine and Nordic ski centers within a short drive from the Trapp Family Guest House. Obviously an automobile or SUV is necessary to enjoy the Trapp Family Guest House and environment. The check-in procedure is simply. There are no high-pressure sales pretensions. The original lodge, dining room, and amenities are available to all guests. The Trapp Family Guest House reminds us of our several trips to Austria. The condos are aging, but well maintained and well appointed. A family, couple, or set of friends will find a nice kitchen, comfortable living room and spacious bedrooms. Interval International has awarded this property five stars for years. This means that only select properties may be considered for trade into the Trapp Family Guest House. When is the best season to visit the Trapp Family Guest House? Winter, of course for the great skiing. Unless one enjoys the epiphinany of spring or the enrapturement of the Green Mountains in the summer, or unless one must view the ardent fall colors of Vermont. Ideally, one will holiday at the Trapp Family Guest House during all four seasons. I have often expressed my resilient love of the outdoors; my wife enjoys the outdoors, but she also is an avowed shopaholic. The sensitive resolution is to spend some time in Stowe and the many towns and villages that have been designed to appease the shopaholic. If properly planned, there are nearby trails to explore and timing will permit a rendezvous for lunch and dinner. A visit to Stowe's website provides links to the following: Alpine Slide, Biking, Bungee, Trampoline, Canoeing & Kayaking, Carriage & Wagon Rides Cross Country Skiing, Dogsledding & Dogcarting, Fishing, Golf, Gondola, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Hot Air Ballooning, Ice Skating, Recreation Path, Scenic Drives, Sleigh Rides, Skiing & Snowboarding, Snowmobiling Snowshoeing, Soaring, Swimming, Tennis, Winter Equipment Rentals, and Wineries. Truly, only the most inept husband could possibly not be creative enough to provide entertainment for his wife. Restaurants abound, and of course the home of Ben and Jerry's is nearby. The Trapp Family Guest House provides a splendid vacation. It is well worth reading some Austrian history, and renting the "Sound of Music" on DVD prior to the trip. The Trapp Family Guest House is an American success story. The Yankees of Vermont have devised many methods to entertain and to provide recreation. The Trapp Family Guest House will provide the basis for a cherished holiday.

Yelp
I loved this lodge! It is very quaint and lovely and hygge. It is very neat and clean and right on brand. The bathrooms are newer and great. I mean if you don't like lodges why stay here? The grounds are absolutely stunning and it's a fun place and I loved the Highland coos!

Yelp
It needs a renovation. Seriously. And it needs blackout curtains. Sun streaming in at 6.45-7am WILL WAKE YOU UP. The WiFi comes and goes. We have gotten msgs that there are too many users. :(. The only upside is the people. They are great. 2/29/24 I have reached out to Andrew but haven't heard back

Yelp
This is one of the best places I have been to. Grew up to the sound of music so of course this is a bucket list item. Beautiful property, great activities for everyone, happy staff and overall an idyllic vacation. First night was Prime Rib night so you can't go wrong there! Did the family tour and maple sugaring on day 1 then some swimming and the chapel hike for day 2. Planning to come back when it's snow season to see the views from a snowy perspective.

Yelp
For those of you who have seen the SOUND OF MUSIC you already know a little about the history here. Trapp Family Lodge is a ski resort nestled in 2,700 beautifully maintained acres of land in the lovely town of Stowe Vermont. The resort is on the actual site of the Von Trapp family home, built in 1983 after the original home, built in 1942 burned down in a fire. The year 1942, the family had fled Nazi occupied Salzburg to settle in America. The architecture is very much the design of a typical alpine Austrian ski lodge. Vaulted ceilings, fireplaces, heavy wooden furniture. The place is surrounded by forests filled with many gorgeous trees: Maple, Birch, Apple, Arborvitae, Pine, throughout, plus exquisite gardens of butterfly and hummingbird attracting flora. Trapp Family Lodge is a great place during the winter season as well as summer and autumn, with an abundance of trails to hike, ski, sleigh or cycle. There's a fitness club, pools (indoor and outdoor), restaurant, Bierhall and Kaffeehaus all within walking distance to the main lodge. On day one, join the Trapp history tour. You will actually get to meet one of the children or grandchildren of the original ten offspring of Captain Georg Von Trapp and Countess Maria. The place is currently run by Johannes Von Trapp (now 82 years old), the youngest of the ten Von Trapp siblings. It's a wonderful story! Guten Tag!

Yelp
We had such a great time here! We stayed for only one night in a family suite. It was expensive, but I was willing to pay it just for a night to be able to experience a stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. When we rolled in, we checked in and then took the free shuttle to dinner at the bierhall - that was super nice! After dinner, we walked over to the kaffeehaus and did a sing-along with s'mores. Then we walked back to the lodge. The building itself is very well taken care of, with tons of flowers and a really neat design that feels European. In the morning, we had the breakfast buffet in the main dining room and then took advantage of a number of activities that are included in the price of the stay. We did the cows tour, which was neat to see. Then we did the history tour, which was the highlight including getting to meet Kristina von Trapp, and then we did a hike to the chapel. We also saw sheep and the cemetery where the Captain and Maria plus all the kids are buried. So glad we did this. Would highly recommend.

Natasha G.

Yelp
Although I agree this lodge is in need of a renovation, our stay altogether was pleasant. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The restaurant and food were great. We had breakfast and dinner and enjoyed it. The food was delicious. I loved that they had cows & activities onsite.

Yelp
Rating mainly for the restaurant - My daughter and I came here for dinner one evening during our trip to Vermont, and while the dinner was good (they even provided our dinner split to separate plates, $2 extra FYI, as we wanted to share our dishes since not that hungry), it wasn't terribly memorable. We started with the watermelon salad - the mint goes wonderfully with the watermelon. Otherwise nothing terribly remarkable about the salad. We then had the salmon with farro, which had good flavor and the farro was done perfectly. Salmon was a bit oversalted, but the crisp skin was delightful. The tarragon sung through the farro and was a good balance for the salt on the salmon. Perhaps some lemon would help cut it. Dessert, linzertorte was a bit heavy, but their puff pastry with cream (can't remember the flavor infusion) and berry drizzle was a solid plus. The property itself is lovely, good trails and beautiful views. Come for the views (but try not to get seated at the tables right by the emergency exit at the restaurant - I get the code and egress needs, but the placement right in the middle window is regrettable for the view the restaurant is celebrating), pay for a day pass for access to the grounds, but we may try the bierhall next time instead of the lodge.

Yelp
Not really fair for 2 stars but I would go with 2 1/2 (yelp). Went here w my soon to be bride for a weekend to get the hell out of dodge and avoid the travers/phish crowd. And this place has always been on my bucket list considering I k ow by heart every single song from the movie. Personal favorite you ask? The hills are alive...duh! Anyway the real reason for the low review is value. This place isn't cheap. In fact it's stupid expensive. So with stupidity I expect certain things. Like rooms that aren't the same as they were in 1981 when the Von Trapps rebuilt this place after the fire. Don't misunderstand...the rooms are clean and decent but circa 1981. You can still keep that Austrian charm, just update them please. And in other reviews people complained about not being able to get 2 cars under the check in spot. Yep! That's stupid too. So we check in and take this crazy walk to our room and the family pics and history on the walls is really cool. We go down to the bar/restaurant/library for a cocktail and some appy's. Decent Manhattan and they've got Bar Hill. So we get the cheese plate for $20 and get a lump of blue cheese and 4 slices of cheddar (?), some bread and a handful of walnuts. Aaahhhh....yeah. That was stupid. So we recuse ourselves to freshen up and the return to the same spot for dinner. The entire restaurant is a bit of a scooby doo ghost town. A note on the decor...same bland worn out look. And the liquor part of the bar was less than inspiring unless you like Whistle Pig rye. So we start w a bib salad that was pre made with these really old looking soggy onion thingys. And we both get the Wiener schnitzel w spatzle. I added to eggs to mine and an extra side of the spatzle. I had already decided I was all about that but perusing the menu there weren't very many choices. Weird. So the food comes out and the schnitzel is cooked perfectly and the spatzle is clearly homemade. But ZERO seasoning or flavor. Ugh. In the morning we walked to the kaffehouse for breakfast. A ham and cheese croissant, an egg and sausage croissant and some coffee. Both croissants were good but served cold. How about you chuck them in a microwave for a sec. Overall the grounds, the space, the buildings, the views are amazing. Everything else...eh. For what you're going to pay for a night here the value just isn't there. Sorry Maria and Georg

Dave K.

Yelp
I will start off by saying I was given direct permission by Walter Frame, the Director and Executive Vice President, husband to Kristina von Trapp, granddaughter to Maria Von Trapp, to use his name as part of this experience. We are repeat guests, having spent our honeymoon and several anniversaries at the lodge. My wife grew up singing The Sound of Music songs, she played Maria in several theater productions, and has a very special place in her heart for the original story of the von Trapps. We eat every meal at the lodge, and shop in their stores, never leaving the property during our stay. This year was our 10th anniversary, and spent a small fortune on a room for the eclipse. During our previous stays, the staff has been courteous, the rooms are clean, the atmosphere is welcoming, the food at the restaurant is decent, the Bierhall and Kaffeehaus are fun, and there are various family activities and events available. I am a certified FAA drone operator. During our most recent stay, I asked the staff at the lodge ahead of time confirming that no policy existed against drone aerial photography, and ensured there are were no FAA airspace restrictions over the lodge. Several minutes before the eclipse, I launched my drone and headed well-clear or the people attending to avoid distractions from the eclipse. The footage would have been incredible for this once in a lifetime event. The drone was out of view of the crowd, and was far enough away that you could not hear it. Walter and his friends were nearby, saw me launch the drone, then distracted me, yelling that the airspace was a "no drone zone", which isn't true. Such distractions are dangerous while somebody is operating a drone, so my wife approached him and explained that we had permission from the hotel staff. Rather than engage in courteous conversation, he belligerently shouted that he "owned" the property, and demanded that I land the drone or have the police called. To avoid further conflict, I complied, and he called my wife and I "rude" for taking photographs during the eclipse. I was not a nuisance, a distraction, or threat to anybody or anything. I had not received any complaints from guests or staff. If Walter Frame wants to institute a policy against drones operated from his property, then he should do so, and communicate said policy to his staff, and guests. We were shocked at disappointed to be chastised so rudely by a member of a family we revere. While I'm sure he hasn't given this interaction a second thought, the experience of being at the lodge for the eclipse was tarnished by his unprofessional, and unreasonable behavior towards us. Our tradition of celebrating our anniversaries at the lodge have come to an end, sadly.

Eldon B.

Yelp
Excellent user experience! We totally loved it and will probably make it an annual family event. The service and ambiance could not be better!

Yelp
3-1/2 Spacious room with amazing Mountain View. Very comfortable bed and pillows. This lodge has a very cozy rustic Austrian appearance on the outside, but inside, it looks like a generic hotel. There is no rustic charm, old world feel, wooden interior as one might expect. That was on of my biggest disappointments. I was really seeking lodging with that dark wood/rustic feel. This just didn't have it. Playing Mozart non-stop didn't really help to create the atmosphere. Food was mediocre at best. Breakfast buffet is not worth the money, in my opinion. Kaffeehouse was ok, but certainly nothing special and definitely overpriced. The coffee was god awful. The snowshoe trails were beautiful, but there needs to be signs at the outdoor center showing exactly where the snowshoe trails begin. It wasn't clearly marked at all. Issue with temperature in our room. It was way too hot at night. I had horrible sleep every night we were there. The bed was super comfy, but it was just too hot. We adjusted the thermostat, and it stayed hot. Maintenance never came. Fan was never brought to us. When we're paying the amount we are paying; this simply shouldn't happen. Slayton pasture cabin was the highlight of our trip. Snowshoeing in the woods was so beautiful. It is not an easy trek up to the cabin-be forewarned. But it is so rustic cozy and fun!! Soup and bread were delicious.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the negatives outweighed the positives. We couldn't enjoy our balcony or even open our windows because of the excessive smoking done by the adjacent room. We talked with the front desk a few times but nothing was done. We spoke to staff upon check out & completed their survey - not one apology. Although the restaurant only had 6 tables occupied, they fell short in all categories during breakfast - a long wait to be seated, cold food, a struggle to get something to drink & obtaining a spoon was near impossible. The catering during a conference was confusing and sad - sitting outside with no lights and served cold food to the wrong people each night (meals were pre-selected ahead of time, so they knew in advance what was needed for each attendee). The positives: the acreage was beautiful, the tour guides were knowledgeable & engaging and some staff were very helpful.

Yelp
My husband and I vacation in Maine every year but wanted a little bit of a change for a portion of it. I love the movie The Sound of Music and have read many books about the family. Knowing this my husband booked this hotel as a special treat for me. I must say the grounds are gorgeous and the view is spectacular. Checking in was a challenge to start with. The driveway doesn't have space for two cars to fit especially if they are big (ours is) and have to unload in uneven payment. The front desk staff were very pleasant and were able to answer my many questions. We got the room we requested overlooking the mountains with a private balcony. When I started unpacking and went to place drink in the fridge there were two dirty towels in there . Everything else seemed fine although it could use some updating. The next day we went out and left a tip and a note for housekeeping for extra towels. Not only did we not get extra towels, she didn't clean the bathroom, empty the ice bucket and left the extra pillows on the floor. I was very disappointed. We ate in the dining room our first night and enjoyed our meal, although expensive. Our server was wonderful. The second night we sat outside since it was beautiful. We ordered the same thing as the night before, however it tasted much different and we didn't enjoy it as much. For the same price you get better service inside than out.

Yelp
What can I say, after five stays Trapp Family Lodge is simply incredible. In the mountains above Stowe you really get away from it all with magnificent views. Unparalleled mountain biking, cross country skiing and hiking ON THE PROPERTY. Onsite German microbrewery and bierhall, with a shuttle to get you back to your room. Superb customer service. A gorgeous onsite outdoor pool with those same magnificent views. Trapp is a special place and a real value.

Yelp
Don't spend your money They live from the Von Trapp name Bad service Bad food Not a friendly or fun place Have been there in the past, but it has gone "completely " down hill Had to send the food back waited a long time for any service Sat with dirty plates left on the table between courses So many better places to dine in the area

Yelp
Everything. Great place. Highly recommended. Great for families. Well run. Clean and neat.

Yelp
This is a terrific resort in a spectacular setting. Just admiring the view from your balcony, the pool or the hiking trails would be enough. But there is so much more. The herd of Scottish Highland cattle to watch or one of the two flocks of sheep. The food--and beer-- are terrific, the staff is helpful and friendly. There are lots of hiking trails. And so many on site activities, including several talks and demonstrations about everything from the cows, to the brewery to talks about the history of the family and the inn. Yoga with Deb was lovely-- easy to follow with a calming view of the green mountains I. The background. We went in May and loved it. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Stopped here mainly for the beerhall located on the property. We decided to walk around the grounds before heading to the beerhall for lunch. We stopped by the visitor center first to get a trail pass and a map. We made our way towards the beerhall which is on the other end of the property pass the main lodge. What is shown on the map and the actual trails didn't completely match up. Given we had to pay to walk around the grounds we were annoyed at how little useful the map was. We wish there were more signs along the trail. It was a fairly easy walk, no hills. The view from the trail was beautiful.

The catering during a conference was close to ridiculous - sitting outside with no lights and served cold food to the wrong people each night (meals were pre-selected ahead of time, so they knew in advance what was needed for each attendee). The positives: the acreage was beautiful, the tour guides were knowledgeable & engaging and some staff were very helpful.

Yelp
Really like their German style brews and the atmosphere is very pleasant. Service was good and all of our entrees were tasty. I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
At the Trapp Family Lodge ( owned by the Family on which The Sound of Music was based ) in Stowe Vermont, there's a lot to do. They have dozens of Cross Country Skiing trails and snowshoeing tours to the Sugar Shack where they tap trees and boil down Maple Syrup. And getting ready outside is easy in their heated Yurt. You can meet the Scottish Cows, friendly Sheep and Horses for Sleigh rides in the winter and carriage in the summer. The Wellness center offers a lot; a sauna, Indoor pool, yoga, and massages, but everyone loves the outdoor hot tub. Trapp Family Lodge Go Stowe

Yelp
My husband booked a weekend get away for my birthday over here since the sound of music has been my favorite childhood movie. It was so thoughtful of him. It was a great experience for the most part because the views are stunning. The suite he booked wasn't what we were expecting as we are used to staying at 5-star hotels that are mostly on the more modern, luxurious and clean side when entering the lobby and our first impression of the lodge inside was a bit underwhelming. The views from our balcony were serene and calming however the rooms were quite outdated. I understand that the theme is from that era and it really does feel like you're in the 60's and 70's however a little bit can be upgraded/modified. The lobby definitely needs a face lift as the first impression can be underwhelming. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast but my hubby did not. The breakfast hall definitely needs a revamp for sure. We still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly because we stepped outside of the lodge and explored the surrounding areas and neighboring towns in Stowe. The sound of music/Maria Von Trapp history and tour was nice (quite informative). We met Sam Von Trapp (Maria's grandson) once the documentary ended which was nice. The lodge is very pretty from the outside with scenic views however some tweaking is necessary. The elevators have a strong odor and so do the carpets - with the rates being charged I am sure they can afford to renovate parts of it every year - it's quite pricey to stay at a suite here so upgrades are necessary in my opinion. We went to the coffee house one morning, which was nice and also made a stop for lunch at their beer brewery which was great. I like their gift shop it has some cute stuff. All in all our experience in Stowe was excellent because we enjoyed our stay in Vermont and I am forever grateful to my husband for planning everything so meticulously. Outside, the hills are truly alive!

Yelp
This review is for the Von Trapp Outdoor Center...specifically the mountain bike rentals. My wife and I were visiting from Arizona, and looking to rent mountain bikes for a half day of riding. We discovered the VTOC on a whim, and when we walked in we're warmly greeted by Kurt and the other staff there. Promising. Next they actually asked us how they could help. More promising. When we explained our goals, Kurt spent a good 10 minutes giving us local as well as VTOC trail info. Very interesting indeed. He actually inquired and spoke to my wife about her riding needs. I was impressed. We ended up returning the next day and renting two premium carbon fiber full suspension mountain bikes. The trails in and around the lodge are perfect for beginning mountain bikers or experienced mountain bikers new to the Vermont scene. We rode the green and blue trails mostly, with Greenway and Stepping Stones our bermy/flowy favorites. RESORT MANAGEMENT: please improve your trail signage on the upper Sugarhouse/Fox green loops...we had trouble navigating these areas and with a little signage effort these trails would be ridden more and your outside rental business would increase!!! The reason we rented bikes here was because of the helpful staff, Kurt spent a good 15 minutes fitting us and instructing my wife on the use of her dropper post. Super helpful. With trails and staff like this you are sitting on a virtual destination MTB cash cow. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Nothing negative about this mountain wonderland. Who wouldn't like staying on top of a mountain, able to explore all over the grounds. We had picnics on hills, walks to the brewery, walks in the woods, walks in fields, well walks in general. What a wonderful escape from the norm. The hotel is dated but so Europeon. There is so much to do you won't be able to see it all in one visit. Unique architecture with hidden verandas and cozy sitting areas everywhere inside and out. The bathrooms have a modern update and the rooms are huge. The cold as you care rooms are refreshing, no Red Hot Moments here. A slice of paradise in Stowe. You might just forget which continent you are on. A must is the 90 min real Von Trapp family tour. With amazing Broadway style indulges. (Mike is awesome) ending with a real Von Trapp family member to sign books, etc. Tip:( The seating in the garden area can get warm, you will want to be in the shade. Every seat is fabulous. Most of your time is here). This is included in the resort fee. As are pools, jacuzzis, saunas, and have I mentioned walks. While there are no EV chargers on site, there is one at the brewery and in the second parking lot, multiple 120v outlets to plug into. The Breakfast buffet is great every morning for $23 an adult. If you don't care for crowds you will want to get there at 7:30am when it opens. Breakfast is not served outside so the tables are open in the morning for coffee/tea. It's a quiet treat and the views are breathtaking. We are already planning our next trip back.

Yelp
Very family and tour bus friendly. Honestly, for the price I didn't find it worth it. Lodge needs several updates, carpet, railings, etc...get your moneys worth by partaking in the activities to "meet the cows" or "meet the sheep". The meet the cows tour was very good. Breakfast buffet is mediocre but again, overpriced.

Yelp
What a sweet retreat in the beautiful area on Stowe,VT! The history, heritage and legacy is preserved well in this Austrian inspired retreat nestled in the magnificent white mountains! We were only able to stay one night, however our stay left us with a desire to return with our girls one day! The von Trapp family settled here and turned their home property to a wonderful retreat with hiking, biking and so much more! We stayed in a king room overlooking the mountains. Everything was so peaceful including a walk through the gardens and our short drive into the small town for ice cream! Thank you Trapp family for sharing this beautiful piece of property with us!

Yelp
Stayed 2 nights. Enjoyed the fall colors and the lovely grounds/interiors. The family history was very impressive, and the hike to his chapel, very moving. Their brewery was amazing, and their dinner buffet. All went very well... until their famous Wienershnitzel at dinner... expected a nice juicy breaded slice of meat, fried the traditional way in Germany/Australia...??... what came was a shock! It was a dry (baked?) breaded somethingorother!! At prime $$$ it was more like something from a wannabe American eatery, on "special" at $15... Trapp management needs to quality control this menu. They ARE Austrian and know what we Europeans expect. We were embarrassed to challenge the waiter to take it back (they were at full house; 45min to get this plate). My wife's Prime Rib was excellent, though. Sooo... pass on the schnitzel, and get the Prime Rib instead :)

Yelp
I stayed here in early November and had a delightful stay. It is a 4 hour drive up so I liked that I didn't have to drive much after arrival. They gave me a very nice room. I was in the lodge and had 2 windows plus double doors to the terrace. Honestly saw one of best sunrises I have possibly ever seen. The grounds were immaculate. The lodge was very nice. There was maybe a wing closed off for updates but it did not get in the way. Room Details: My room looked like it had a recently updated bathroom. Sort of a rain shower head, which as someone who does not wash my hair every day, is a fad I hope ends sooner rather than later. But the tile was beautiful. They need to add a larger shelf to hold products and maybe a hook closer? The remote/tv was awful but I didn't watch much tv. You can bring your own streaming device. Pillows were the worst I have ever encountered. The rest of the room was very nice. It was spacious, nice & quiet with ample lighting. There was a fridge as well. I took the shuttle to/from the Bierhall for dinner one night and had a great time. I walked to the Kaffeehaus in the morning to get good coffee and a breakfast sandwich (yummy). Then I hiked to the cabin and around the trails for a few hours. It was a beautiful chilly day and very picturesque. Successful trip!

Yelp
Came over Labor Day and again over Thanksgiving because it's such a great place for a family get together (yes we quarantined/tested, and MA allowed travel to VT). So many ways to be together, get outside, and enjoy great food, beer, and shopping both at Von Trapp and the greater Stowe area. This is NOT a theme park to the Sound of Music, it is The Von Trapp's representation of their family history and Austrian heritage. If you want the The Four Seasons or The Ritz, you probably shouldn't come to VT. Do come if you want to take mom on a Hills Are Alive walk around the fields of a working VT farm, force the kids to drop their phones and head into the tree line for a family hike/ski/bike, lace 'em up yourself for a trail run you just might brag about later, or maintain your routine at the indoor gym, lap pool. Seasonally this is legit destination for cross-country skiing and mountain Biking. When Apres-X time hits, enjoy the views and seasonal ambience of The Lodge, and the many options they have for food and drink including the new Bierhall a short way down the hill. The Lodge also offers many indoor and outdoor spots to gather the family in BYOx fashion For those with dogs. The Lodge is dog friendly (small fee). Many rooms offer a back door directly to lawn - very helpful for morning relief, and coming/going without having to walk the hallways.

Yelp
Food quality was poor. Server missed items in the order. Flies were flying around and one made it into my wife's just served wine glass. She was told another would come and it never did. The room was not busy (maybe four other families) but it was hard to catch the server's eye. A bread order and another dish never arrived, but we were charged for it. A cheese plate and butters were served with table bread and the server had no idea what they were - not a huge issue, but it's nice to know what you are eating. My children both had upset stomachs after eating the kid's meal chicken fingers and we felt unwell also (spatzle and pork loin) though not to the extent the children did. Underwhelming and surprising. I had no time to ask for a manager so I paid the full bill and tipped 22% because I had no idea whose fault it was and so we could get the hell out of there. Lovely grounds, but the restaurant needs overhaul. Have not noticed a call or VM or email from management despite a call to the Lodge. Update: Disputed this on my card after awful experience and lack of contact. These guys used the fact that I tipped my server as proof I didn't have a bad experience in response. No, chucklehead, I took care of your server because I felt sorry for him and didn't think I would make him suffer personally for your sorry excuse for fine dining. Lesson learned. I won't bother next time. I'll just warn all of my friends, who like to dine out with their families, not to come to your place.

Yelp
The lodge was magnificent! We had reservations and after a cocktail we were seated in the dining room where we enjoyed spectacular views of the fall foliage. Our waiter, Matt provided outstanding service to our large (11) party, he would check every few minutes to make sure we were well taken care of. The food and desserts were excellent!

Yelp
Beautiful setting and scenery. This property has rich history and so much potential and under better management could really be fantastic. Really wanted to love this place but unfortunately the staff, service and accommodations are not on the same level as the scenery. The wifi coverage is awful and goes in and out like a 1999 AOL CD-ROM connection. If you're staying here with the goal of being completely off the grid, you're in luck! But if fictional internet is important to you, may want to look elsewhere. Another thing I wish the hotel told us ahead of time is that oddly some of the resort activities only accept cash and do not allow you to charge to your room or pay by credit card. The horse drawn sleigh ride was $250 cash only however the hotel did not have a working ATM on property and the closest ATM was a 15 minute drive from the hotel! (As an aside the sleigh ride was basically just going around in circles in a field and would definitely not recommend) The service level was generally quite poor. The "shuttle service" around the property (which is a guy driving a mini van) doesn't seem to have any regular hours and often was unavailable. The hotel advertises a rock climbing wall but when we asked about using the rock climbing the fitness center, the guy working the said he didn't want to set up so we could not use it. The one positive highlight was the snow shoe maple syrup tour. Our guide was fantastic and super helpful and informative. But aside from him, most of the other staff we encountered at Trapp were rude and/or unhelpful. If I could do it all over again, would come here for the snow shoeing and cross country skiing but would definitely stay elsewhere in Stowe.

Yelp
I just love this place. It's so beautiful up on the mountain and I hadn't been there in many many years before we went and visited this weekend. The lodge is still beautiful and has an absolutely stunning view of the mountains and the valley. The business of the lodge itself has boomed since the last time I went there. There are many many types of rentals and the are are condominiums as well that you can purchase. It is quite lovely and full of nostalgia for those of us who grew up with the movie. So it's always a place that I like to stop at when I have been the area. We also drove by the Von Trapp brewery which sounds interesting although we did not have the time to try it. But definitely a place you want to say that you have seen if you are a fan of the Sound of Music

Yelp
For the price, not worth it. Short hairs found in the beds. If you call the "front desk," you'll receive a message that the mailbox is full. TV lost connection every 2-3 minutes. None of the TVs are set up for wifi and guide doesn't work, according to staff. No explanation or apology from staff. We were provided 2 towel sets for 4 people. Room has a desk with no pen or paper. Living space is roomy but outdated. Bathroom appeared to be recently updated. Housekeeping tried to keep out the cold by using masking tape around the door that leads to the deck and was not effective in 20 degree weather.

Yelp
My whole life, I wanted to stay in this Lodge. My husband made the reservation. I was overjoyed. I told everyone I knew that we were going. Dreams come true on May 1st. Last night, the love of my life suffered a heart attack, developed AFib and is told a valve in his heart is bad. I called the Lodge tearfully to cancel reservation. Monica told me that I needed to cancel 14 days in advance per the website to get my money refund I explained that he went in hospital overnight and it wasn't planned and was an emergency. And she said oh sorry. Maybe I expect too much humanity and decency from people. Thank you Trapp Family. It was a hard lesson ($$) to learn that people don't care. Update I am changing my review. After emailing with Mr. Horan Who is management at the lodge, He not only resolved my issue promptly but restored my confidence that business is not always business. I am also grateful that he believed me when others did not. He understood that when someone is undergoing a situation in which a family member is gravely ill,the last thing you need is for a business to make you feel like you're just a nobody who doesn't count. Mr. Horan went above and beyond to rectify this problem and credit us the money paid for for our canceled reservation. If you are looking for a hotel and lodging in Stowe Vermont please give this lodge your business. I just wish more businesses treated their guest the way Mr Horan treated us. Bravo sir. You are given all the respect

Yelp
I came here with my 78-year old mom, 10-year old son, and very tall and active husband. That is a wide age span and we all have different expectations and desires. Trapp Family Lodge did not disappoint. We had a snafu with the reservation because our room suite needed maintenance and was no longer available. Because we had such different needs, I was very worried that we wouldn't find another room(s) that would be as good of an experience. The manager was super friendly and made sure we were happy with rooms that were even better than the suite we had reserved. I SO appreciate that they made it all work for us. We're just on our first night so I may have more to add, but the location and views are incredible, the pool was the perfect temperature, my husband loved his first hike, and the Bierhall was fabulous. Love it!

Yelp
I have not stayed at the lodge, only visited for dinner. It's fairly expensive for what you get, and by no means would I consider it fine dining - either in food quality or service. The outdoor views are great, but the overbearing abundance of rules signage and labyrinthian process for parking are a bit much.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Food is good in the dining room and really good at the Bier Hall. Indoors and outdoor pools are lovely. Our favorite part of the Trapp is any tour that Chris Poacher leads. He's like the Vermont equivalent of Bill Bryson--you laugh, you learn stuff, and you leave with a deep appreciation of nature, the craft of maple sugaring, animal husbandry and fungi. Our room situation wasn't great. We were really hoping for a mountain view (especially because the Trapp was less than 40% full we were told), instead we were in a back wing of the property with other families with kids. This would have been alright but for the raucous wedding directly next to us. We could hear music in our room until 10:00PM and couldn't use the back patio because the wedding reception had an outdoor component. All in all, it was a rough time trying to put my kid down when you can hear "Sweet Caroline" blaring in your room ("SO GOOD, SO GOOD"). I really wish the Trapp had been a little more thoughtful here. If the place isn't full, surely you don't need to put all the families with little kids in a back wing by a wedding. Great location, maybe a little less T-Pain next time.

Yelp
This place has a lot of potential. Management (Gina) however is of the lowest caliber. We reserved one of the nicest suites. Upon checking in, it turns out that due to construction, our private patio with the supposed stunning Mountain view is instead directly facing a giant dumpster, heavy machinery, a few thousand pieces of lumber, work zone pylons and yellow tape. After bringing this to management's attention (they were aware of it) they provided us a downgrade! No free upgrade was offered. The entire process took over 90 minutes to get checked into our down-graded room. Nothing was offered, other than long periods of waiting in frustration. After pointing this out and suggesting that they didn't even offer a free meal - a single complimentary breakfast was offered. Lol. The Four Seasons this is not, despite the fact that we paid a Four Seasons' rate for our Salzburg suite. If you care about customer service - avoid this place.

Yelp
We knew we would arrive late so when we called to notify the front desk of our late check-in time, they were fine with checking in as late as around midnight. As you drive up to the lodge, you can see that there is a parking lot directly across from it. The lodge itself is decorated in the Sound of Music thematic and is dotted with fresh cut blooms and lush green plants throughout. There are several community spaces to enjoy a warm and cozy crackling fire place or bask in the morning sun. The rest of the property has many wonderful amenities to offer. The fitness center is complete with climbing wall, sauna, yoga studio, and year-round indoor pool with access to year-round outdoor hot tub and seasonal outdoor swimming pool, where you can soak in the scenic views as you swim and tub. If you come in the winter months, there are a lot of fun cross-country ski and snow shoe trails. The rooms are very clean and bed is super comfortable. The bathroom tub was very large. I would say the amenities in the room I stayed in could have used more updating. For instance, the TV was really old so the only way to channel surf was to channel up and down. And all the channel surfing on the remote confused the TV so I had to manually turn it off. So - bring a book instead since there are so many great places to curl up with one. The toiletries were also very basic. All-in-all, a nice place to stay.
