What a beautiful and wonderful place to visit. Especially with the interactive center where children can experience some of the things of the Voortrekkers. The dress code of the people working there was lovely Plenty of caffe's and pitststops whilst walking. The monument was mesmerizing and it really is worth it going all the way up to have a birds eye view of Pretoria.

Have over the years caught glimpses of the huge edifice of the Voortrekker Monument that is conspicuously visible from almost all directions around the hill on which the granite structure and its huge complex is built. Undertook an impulsive visit to the Schanskop Fort located in the same precinct, and ventured into the Transvaal Voortrekker Museum, adjacent the Complex Reception / Ticket office. Was impressed by the management and maintenance of the cultural complex, and especially the efforts undertaken to preserve and secure the historical artifacts.

I was last here over 40 years ago, & was totally blown away by the complex as it is today. So much to see & a very inter-active experience. The staff are super friendly & helpful & happy to chat about the displays. Wonderful museum collections to browse & history brought alive. The monument itself is a marvel of the builders art, & the atmosphere inside as reverent & respectful of a people's forging as I remember. Tip: if stairs are a challenge, park at the back & enter through the lower museum. There is a wheelchair lift, & then... one of the spiral staircases to the top, which so terrified me as a child, has been replaced by a tiny 3 person & wheelchair friendly lift! The marvellous views from the top are definitely worth it.

Went for the Saturday Parkrun, loved the vibe and route, the music and energetic spirit. The gardens are beautiful, cute coffee shops and restaurant based on a school classroom theme, traditional menu based on SA"s favorites like "braaibroodjies" and "melktert" at very reasonable prices. Well worth a visit.

High above, the dubious monument commemorates the victory at Blood River and the completion of the great trek from the Cape region to the north of the Transval. The perfect setting for nostalgic dreams of a better past and a striking reminder that history is always a question of narrative perspective. When colonial history is glorified, it sometimes results in stone hymns to conquest and self-pity.

If you are interested in the history of the Boer, this would be a must visit. On the other hand, there are not really that many tourist site in Pretoria and the Voortrekker Monument is number one in the list. The journey of the Boers up north to escape the British was similar to the American westward migration although one is for political reason and the other is for better livelihood. Also, we were dropped off by an Uber and nowhere inside the monument siad we had to pay for admission. When we left we also called an Uber to pick us up directly in front the monument, but the gate attendant would not let us leave. We had to go back inside the monument to buy a ticket and pay for parking even though we never parked, because the Uber entered the parking lot we were required to pay
