6 of the most exciting museum openings around the world - SilverKris

"Promising to bring the wrecks and finds of the Baltic Sea to the surface, this new museum will let visitors dive deep into the secrets of an underwater world. Stockholm already has great museums, and this has the potential to be one of the most fascinating: it will be situated on Djurgården Island, next door to the slightly bonkers Vasa Museum—the home of the preserved 17th‑century warship so enormous it sank in Stockholm’s harbour before it saw any service, a crazy, royal shipbuilding fantasy that led to the death of 30 crew. Unlike the Vasamuseet’s narrower focus, the Museum of Wrecks will bring together the work of all the naval museums in the city and show off the work of marine archaeologists who have been scouring Stockholm’s Archipelago and the Baltic Sea for decades looking for new shipwrecks. Don’t miss the chance to learn through archaeology and technology; it’s scheduled to open towards the end of the year, and from 2022 you may even be able to go diving with shipwrecks in planned dive parks off the coast of Sweden’s Karlskrona region, south of Stockholm." - Kate Crowther

Vrak is a fascinating and modern museum that brings maritime history to life in a truly unique way. The exhibitions focus on shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea, with stunning visuals and immersive multimedia displays. What impressed me most was how they combined history, archaeology, and storytelling, making it accessible to both adults and children. It’s not a large museum, but it’s very well curated and leaves a strong impression. A perfect stop for anyone interested in maritime history or Sweden’s connection to the sea.

Visiting the Museum of Wrecks in Stockholm was an absolutely fascinating experience, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. This hidden gem beautifully combines history, archaeology, and storytelling in an engaging way that brings Sweden’s maritime past vividly to life. The exhibitions are stunning — thoughtfully curated with shipwrecks, artifacts, and interactive displays that highlight both the mystery and the human stories behind them. Rather than feeling dry or overly technical, every room feels immersive and inspiring, with modern technology used just enough to enhance without overwhelming. What I especially appreciated was how the museum focuses on respect for the people connected to these wrecks, reminding visitors that each artifact and vessel carries real lives and real history with it. The atmosphere is serene but full of discovery, with clear explanations in English and Swedish, making it approachable for all visitors. Staff are warm, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do, happily answering questions and sharing their insights. Whether you are a history lover, someone fascinated by the sea, or just curious about untold stories beneath the waves, this museum is an absolute treasure. It’s informative, emotional, beautifully designed, and surprisingly moving. One of the highlights of my trip to Stockholm, and a place I’ll remember for a very long time.

An amazing museum. The beginning was a bit boring for me, but then it became more and more fascinating. We spent there almost 3h, I guess. We bought a bundle ticket with Vasa mueum. Highly recommend both!

I didn't really know what this museum was about...and I found out it is about a sunk ship (like the vasa ship but definitely smaller) that people kept searching and likely found. It is a good museum, many effects from the beginning. It actually has only 3 rooms, but I liked them all. I really liked the effect of glass and inclined mirrors for creating a 3D image of a projected video and image!

Really worth a visit! We loved the VR diving experience and the interactive nature of the other exhibits. It's all very well laid out and beautifully maintained. The cafe is lovely and the beetroot and goats cheese salad is superb. We'd like to thank the member of staff who served as as she was friendly and helpfu. She carefully explained how to make the salad at home, something I plan to do. We bought a dual ticket for this and the Vasa museum from tourist info at the central station. This represented great value for money. However there is no problem to buy tickets when you enter and the staff are very welcoming.

Really enjoyed the museum. It was a different experience compared to the Vasa but brilliant in different ways. The talk given by the staff was insightful and engaging (make sure you pick up the optional chairs) and the exhibitions were interactive and interesting. Before you go, realise this isn’t full of wrecks pulled up, it’s full of technology and progress of wrecks and how modern protections keep them in the Baltic. Would really recommend.
