6 Best Day Trips from Paris

"This estate is one of a few in Champagne to have crayères, chalk caves that began as quarries in the Early Middle Ages and are ranked a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour itself, which is only available upon request, with reservation, and with a guide (in English or French), takes a sizable group (10 to 12) into the Gallo-Roman crayères. Most cellar visits are relatively straight forward, but the Pommery visit is punctuated by contemporary art installed throughout the tunnels and galleries as temporary exhibitions. This is an excellent tour for anyone visiting Champagne who knows little about the region, Champagne production, and even less about the crayères. It's an engaging visit that ends with a tasting." - Lindsey Tramuta, Mary Winston Nicklin

Google
We had a guided tour here. It was very informative and really enjoyable. The tour ended with a chilled glass of champagne. Top tip, take a long sleeved top as it will be 10 degrees Celsius in the caves and you will be in there for an hour 🥶

Google
More a museum than a winery, its a unique way to experience the champagne. We reserved a ticket a few weeks in advance, which actually allowed us to go whenever during that day. You enter and are free to wander on your own. Make sure to visit the cellar, as its one big museum. The champagne tasting area is self service, kind of strange. But its a great concept.

Google
A fun way to spend a couple of hours in Reims, visiting the artistic caves, enjoying a glass or two of champagne, learning about the history, seeing how champagne is made and perhaps enjoying a snack or light lunch at the on-grounds restaurant. The caves are more airy and better decorated than other vineyards I’ve visited. The guided tour was informative and friendly, answering all our detailed questions.

Google
Absolutely stunning. This is incredibly beautiful. The artwork is everything and it’s like a wonderland. Then your at a UNESCO Hertiage site. We did the gastro tour and it was such good value. I see some reviews annoyed they booked in French I had no problem with booking as it does clearly say the language on the site before you book.

Google
Really impressive place to see the cellars and the artworks are a worthy addition (although remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder so your mileage may vary). Entry fee a little high even for non alcoholic tasting at the end. Easy parking!

Google
⸻ We really love your work and your story — it’s deeply inspiring. The bas-reliefs deserve a special mention: they are stunning, full of detail and emotion. We were also truly impressed by the small installations and the thoughtful meanings behind them. Every element seems to carry its own narrative, making the entire experience memorable and rich with symbolism.

Google
Pommery was our first stop in Reims, and honestly, there’s not much more iconic than that deep Pommery blue. The cellars are massive, the branding is striking, and it’s a pretty surreal experience wandering through such a historic space. You can do a guided tour, but having done that, I’d recommend a self-guided walk.. it would be than enough to take it all in. It’s self-paced and there’s plenty of info throughout. That said, now that we’ve done a few houses, I’d probably say Veuve Clicquot edged it out in terms of overall experience. Still, Pommery is definitely worth seeing, especially if it’s your first time in the region.

Hello

Google
This winery is an experience like none other wineries. There is a museum which is filled with artworks and there are many ticket options all include wine tasting. If you have kids don’t worry as there is a non-alcoholic sparkling grape drink that they can taste. We opted for the most popular ticket option which was to go into the cellars which was filled with wine and art. Would recommend if you come to Reims.

Yelp
It's an amazing piece of art in and out. This place is more like a museum, very calm and mellow as you enter the building. Wish we had time to tour the inside. The tour is about 90mins to 2 hours long depending on what package you choose. Reservation is highly recommended.

Yelp
I wasn't sure what to expect as the tickets were purchased by a family member. Our time slot was for a Friday at 4pm for a self guided tour. The property is huge. It felt like walking into a castle. We started the tour by going downstairs into a cave! Some areas were really dark. Apparently we were walking through tunnels deep down that also held some modern art pieces. Some were cool, others were weird but that's art for you. It doesn't appeal to everyone. It took us about 30 minutes to finish the art exhibit. After that we went to sample their champagne. Originally we thought we were going for a tasting but the specific ticket purchased was only for 1 sample. After we brought our glasses back to the counter the staff offered us another sample of their other champagne since we brought the glasses back. That was really nice of him. There's also a restaurant with limited hours for lunch and dinner. The menu looked good. Unfortunately we already had dinner plans. We did get a couple of bottles as gifts. Their champagne is sweet which I liked and it does not give me a headache.

Yelp
Champagne Pommery has art attractions in their tunnels where they store champagne. They are temporary exhibits but make the visit so much more interesting. The winery is very interesting - they produce about 7 million bottles a year. But, when there's art - it makes the experience so much better! The ambiance is filled with color and different perspectives as you venture through different halls below ground We didn't tour the vineyards or see the process of how they make their champagne; we took the cave tour only. After the tour was over, they give you a glass of champagne to try. The person handing out champagne wasn't patient with questions. I had a few about their process and he was a bit off-putting with arrogance. Other than the snobby young guy who didn't want to answer questions, the visit was spectacular.

Yelp
Our planned visit to Champaign country started with a stop for lunch...and believe me not disappointed. The service was excellent in that the tour company planned and called ahead. The service and food was nothing less than outstanding. We were treated like royalty as we let the server pick the wine...and he was right on point...The Champaign paired with everything perfectly. The overall ambiance was reminded me of royalty with a court focused on my happiness. A must do when exploring the fruits of France.

Yelp
We went for the culinary experience after the cellar tour. Both were great. The cellar tour was informative and nice with all the artwork. After the tour we had supper with a few champagnes and they were great. I recommend it.

Yelp
Took a private tour up to Champagne country and had lunch reservations at Le Refectour. Walked in and there were a few people seated so we were checked in and seated immediately. It was rather quiet, people were talking but they were using there inside voices lol! We were given menu's and the first thing that jumped out at me was the avacado and it crab and shrimp duo so I new that was going to be my starter and I was so happy I started with that. The presentation was amazing and the taste was even better. The crab was very flavorful and the shrimp had a slight curry taste. The avacado flowed seasoned very well the crab a d shrimp. The flavors just worked together and it was like a party in my mouth. For my main course I chose the tarragon chicken along with potatoes and green beans. The chicken came with gravy of some sort which paired very well not only on top of the chicken but I also poured it on my potatoes. Again my mouth was very happy and the green beans were cooked to perfection they were cooked but still firm. Everything was paired with Blanc de blancs Apanage Champagne! The champagne went well with the entire meal. If you ever visit Champagne county in France do yourself a favor and check this place out your taste buds will be very happy!!

Yelp
An impressive place to see random modern art. not expected and like most modern art it is truly in the eyes of the beholder. Since the so called free tasting is after the art it was ok. The sample is among the worst the brand has to offer with each staff member barely engaged. So sugary that I wanted to check my glucose. As always...some people need the Disney version. This is for you. BTW I love Disney. Just not my bag when I dreamed of champagne caves.

Yelp
While on the Champagne trail you will come across this establishment. They offer a variety of guided and self guided tours. Unless you thought in advance, there's a good chance you will only have self guided as an option. They are a little pricey. The restaurant was closed today. You will also find a large mingling room and Boutique. The self guided tour took right at an hour. There was more beautiful art work than I could have imagined. We were here on an off season. So we were able to listen from our phone without earbuds. But if there are more people, you will need them.

Yelp
I dined at Le Réfectoire, Pommery's on-site restaurant. This was my first full meal in Reims as a solo traveler, so I was a bit nervous to order in French. My waitress was incredibly patient and helpful. It was the perfect environment for someone who is not yet fluent in the language but wants to practice: English is available and understood but not automatically reverted to. The food was incredible. The menu is structured so that you choose an individual entree, plat, and dessert to fill out your formule (set menu). This is very helpful for anyone with dietary restrictions. Each individual dish has its own wine pairing you can choose, which I think adds a lot of flexibility as it does not push you into ordering a full course of wines. I chose to do the wine pairings which each course. The dishes themselves were phenomenal, a standout for me being the mushroom pasta. The pairings were thoughtful and enhanced each dish beautifully. The ambiance was as exquisite as the food. Expect a beautifully decorated interior with white glove service to boot. While I cannot comment on the wine tasting Pommery offers, I would highly recommend their dining experience.

Yelp
To me just meh. It was more of an art gallery which is impressive than a champagne house. I didn't feel the richness of history like I have at some of the other houses.

Yelp

Yelp
This is one you can skip..I was excited to come here as I enjoy the champagne.I was sadly disappointed with my experience. The place is more of an art museum than a champagne house. Most of the staff was rude and was not enjoyable experience. There are better champagne house to go too!

Yelp
Called at 3pm Sunday and was told to come right away as the English tour was about to begin I was only 1 km away so we made it. The place is lovely the land is well kept and it's a nice little walk up. Parked on the side street but u are able to park in the gates only noticed after. Once you check in you get to choose which champagne you want for after the tour. After you scan your ticket and away you go. There's oversized art and it's fantastic! The chairs and table are my fav. The only downside is the fact that our tour guides voice wasn't loud enough we weren't a huge group but when you have chatter boxes amongst you it makes it harder. It's 8 km underground our tour was 1 km so they filled up a lot of space with some contemporary art some moving images as well. They have a large moving owl projected to scare the mice which is super smart and funny. All and all I enjoyed myself I heard that other ones are better but they weren't open and this was my first one so can't complain! Cheers

Yelp
The Quick: Absolutely incredible champagne cave tours!! The tour guides actually speak English and are very personable. There's artwork everywhere and the whole experience was so much fun! We did a few tours and this was our favorite. Plus the outside is gorgeous and the champagne is so tasty

Yelp
We had already visited Vueve Cliquot earlier in the day so had some idea of what the cellars were like. However, Pommery was an unique winery with its own fascinating history, also with a strong female head, a widow, running shit and starting a legacy. As Beyonce was asked, "Who run the world? Who run this muthafucka?" Yes! Girls. The art in the cellars were also really fascinating, some of it looked straight up magical. The woozy green lights brought even more of a eery fascination to the whole experience. As someone who knows nothing about sparkling wine, this was a great experience.
google avatar

Nola G.

Yelp
The cellar experience is more about a modern art collection than the production of wine. I enjoyed what was created only because I have been fortunate to visit several caves in the Champagne région. The app for the self-guided tour is very informative with some great video. The receptionist admitted the WiFi is bad at Domaine Pommery. I could not download the app while visiting. The app, however, downloaded at home. I think I would have gotten more from this experience with a guide. This is my second attempt to visit the maison. The website for creating an account and buying tickets online is horrible also. They have a nice gift shop. There are three options for tastings. It was a creative experience but Pommery needs to invest in technology to improve the customer experience. Domaine@vrankenpommery.fr www.vrankenpommery.fr

Yelp
Big showcase for a standard bubbly and an odd tour. Highlights: - Combo cave and art tour: learned as much about art as the champagne which was unexpected but cool - Cool modern art: lots spread throughout the caves. Loved the mini bottle tree, rainbow tunnel, blue odd character paintings, thin tall glass droplets, and cave wall with famous classic painting images rotating - Champagne cage in the front: giant and cool with normal sized corks in a basket below Lowlights: - Too commercial: Disneyland-like ticket turnstiles were a bit much - Tour guide: completely eccentric and absentminded. Was hard to focus. - Too much of the blue lighting: got to be overkill especially in the tasting area - Just ok champagne: these are the minis I used to caltrain to a Giants game Reminds me of the Mondavi in Napa: it's fine but prefer others than are more authentic.

Yelp
I cannot give this a five yet... only because this was the single large cellar I visited. The other two were a co-op and a small boutique family winery. The tour exceed my expectations for a few reasons. 1. Art was on display in the cellars throughout the tour. Each chamber held a new art piece, one that change over time with the elements. 2. The history of the cellars dating back to the Roman times was kind of mind blowing! 3. Heavy pours of wine, which in the US just doesn't happen. Left the building quite jolly. Been on a bit of champagne kick ever since this tour now that I fully appreciate all the hard work that goes into each bottle! Thanks, Pommery! Pro tip: Wear a cardigan. A bit cool underground.

Yelp
This is the rudest place I have been to in the region. We asked for a tour and we didn't speak any French. Instead of letting us know when the English tours were, they booked us on a French tour. Well, I don't understand French so not only was it a waste of time and money, when I asked to speak to a manager, he was extremely rude. His opening statement was - we don't give refunds. It was extremely disappointing to be treated this way. I would never come back. This place seems very fake and the exterior architecture looks like something you would see at Disney. Avoid at all costs, there are so many more places where the people are friendly and the champagne is MUCH better. If I could have given them no stars, I would have.

Yelp
We took a trip out to the Champagne region to explore everything that France had to offer in terms of bubbly. Outside of Dom Perignon, there is probably no other champagne company more famous than Champagne Pommery. Not only is the champagne here known throughout the world, but this was a company built by women during a time when it was incredibly challenging to do so because of sexism. When you come here, you should join one of the tours. For those who don't speak French, they have English tours as well who will take you into their cellars, give you a history of this vineyard and their specific bottling process. Unlike wine, champagne follows a different process that will ensure a smooth but bubbly experience. In their cellars, they have art displays throughout to entertain the guests. Quite fun, actually. More importantly, though, in my opinion is actually seeing all the bottles of champagne aging and waiting for that day to be their turn to highlight/accentuate a party. Madame Pommery chose to highlight her "conquests" and by that I mean the countries that her company now exports to. You'll see flags and names of countries/cities throughout the cellar. It's quite the testament to this company's reach. Their champagne is smooth and enjoyable something that most everyone will enjoy. While I did enjoy the glass, it didn't have the same personality as some of the smaller vineyards around that had more character and complexity to the drink. All in all, though, a great experience and a must for anyone interested in wine/champagne.

Yelp
Drinks: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Decor & Style: 5/5 This was the best cellar i've ever been to! Ok okay, it's the only champagne cellar i've ever been to. But it was great! The tour was great and long. Lots of great info. Some areas were decorated with real creepy items (like creepy ghost-like girls laughing in the background). Champagne itself is just champagne to me, nothing special (i'm a beer drinker, us beer drinkers thinks all wines, cocktails taste the same, respectively). Anyway for a non champagne lover, beer connoisseur I high recommend this place! Beautiful cellar!

Yelp
Yes, it's enormous and yes a ton of people go there, but it's just so, so classy. Filled with history, innovation, and the spirit of entrepreneurship, the sprawling Vranken-Pommery grounds should not be missed on your visit to Reims. It's one of the houses that refuses to do a video introduction at any level and insists on the old-fashioned storytelling method, props and all. The caves are VAST and have WWII history. Don't miss this place.

Yelp
A trip to France has to include a winery excursion so thanks once again to our favorite Parisienne bon vivant Claude Alice, we were booked on the English language tour of the Pommery champagne house. This winery is a taxi ride from the Reims train station but we had a nice walk back to town so we could see the Reims Notre Dame Cathedral and have lunch at the Place Erlon, so do what feels right for you. Getting out of the taxi I was quite impressed with how beautiful the buildings are. Pommery has made a great effort to maintain it's classic look. We paid for the two part tour first being driven through their vineyards on the back of a tram and being taken through the vat house. The explanations of the history of Pommery and how a widow made it one of the most successful French champagne purveyors in the 1800s, how they get their grapes and maintain their AOC distinction, and especially how they managed to keep producing during World War I when the front line was 1200 meters away were all quite interesting especially for someone who doesn't know too much about champagne. The second half of the tour consisted of the tour of the underground caves where the temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit year round. One of the reasons champagne production was developed in this region is due to these limestone caves that were excavated by the Romans for building roads and happened to provide the perfect storage temperature for the champagne. Madame Pommery was a great supporter of artists and the Belgian owner of today has kept up the tradition. There were numerous sculptures and displays of video art in the caves, which seemed a bit incongruous frankly, but that's how Pommery wants to do. Each part of the tour included a tasting, first of a chardonnay champagne and then of a chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot meunniere champagne combo. The tours and tastings lasted about two hours in all and left us plenty of time to explore Reims further. We were easily back to Paris by 5:00 on the TGV.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place for a first visit of a cellar in the Champagne region nor for a close contact with the producers but this is definitely a place where you can go and enjoy the "view". The enormous cellar (18m underground) is a real cathedral really worth the visit. Nice to finish the tour with at the bar ;)

Yelp
A great place for a champagne tour. We really enjoyed our time here and the champagne was great!

Yelp
Pommery was one of the two champagne houses I visited with my friend during our visit to Reims. It was my least favourite, as the service wasn't as good, the champagne not as tasty, and seemed a bit on the cold side, like a giant tourism machine cranking out the people. Pommery is about a 40 minute walk from the train station, and the tourism office has a very nice map of all the local champagne houses that provides a clear view of how to navigate from the train station to Pommery. Most of the champagne houses require reservations in advance for tours w/ tastings, but at Pommery it is not mandatory, as long as your willing to wait for the next open tour in your preferred language. They have 30 minute or 1 hr tour options w/ a variety of different tastings associated. We chose the 30 minute tour with 1 tasting of their Brut Royal for 12E. This also happened to be the cheapest option. During the 30 minute tour you get a brief look into the history and champagne making process at Pommery while descending into and exploring the labyrinth tunnels of chalk tunnels connecting chalk pits originally created during the Roman period. The chalk tunnels were found to be ideal for the champagne process as they remain at a steady chilled temp, and they suck up the extra moisture. The owners have also made things a bit more interesting by putting "unique" modern art exhibits on display throughout the tunnels. I had booked my reservations in advance via the Pommery website, and exchanged a few emails to confirm the booking. They were slow to respond to my initial request, and they were not helpful in answering my generic questions, like directions on how to locate Pommery from the train. Their only response was to take a taxi. However, the 40 minute walk is very doable, and easy. Customer service was definitely lacking. Upon entering the great gates of the Pommery champagne house I was impressed by the chateau (Castle) like estate, which was originally built as a castle and renovated by the Pommery family. As you walk in you wait for your tour to start in a large warehouse like room, with some random art pieces, and a tasting table to the far right, and a small shop at the front. Definitely catering towards large tourism groups. The tour guide was informative, and the tunnels were fascinating and loved seeing the ageing bottles piled under heaps of dust. You also got to see several actual chalk pits which narrowed towards the top as they reached into the real world, much like a chimney top. At the end of the tour, we were provided with the tasting we chose. The champagne itself was OK. Pommery definitely has a strong marketing team, as they have fun packaging, that is geared towards a younger audience and screams "let's celebrate and party".

Yelp
We just happened across this place last week on our way through Reims. The Blue trees on the lawn were enough to draw us in to see what's what. I know almost nothing about wine and although I have very little interest in the subject, the tour was stunningly beautiful and I learned a lot of really interesting information. I would say this place is absolutely friendly fire the connoisseur and amateur alike based on my experience. The art displays and architecture alone are worth coming out for a tour.

Yelp
This is an absolutely stunning champagne estate. You can chose from several different tours including one of the caves and one of the house. Tickets can be (and are recommended, as they do sell out) reserved & purchased online ahead of time. We misread our train ticket and ended up at the wrong station, missing our train & missing our tour. We were so distraught that the lovely worker at Pommery took pity on us and generously managed to squeeze the two of us into another group. They don't normally do that, so I really appreciate their understanding! The champagne is incredible & the tour is amazing. I always look for Pommery champagne back in the states now!

L B.

Yelp
never been treated so disrespectfully by staff in my life. paying customers are paying customers and to be THREATENED by the misogynist front desk "doorman", if you will, is absolutely unacceptable. As an avid champagne connoisseur, and a Reims region officiado having toured EVERY vineyard, this place is officially off the list and I advise every American, or person, that wants to be treated with respect and treated fairly NOT TO COME TO POMMERY. EVER.

Yelp
Had us waiting at the reception for 25 minutes while the tour left without us (we arrived 5 minutes before the tour started). When we finally asked when the tour was going to start they told us it had left and insinuated it was our fault for not standing at the starting point even though she conceded nobody told us to go there. Next we were given the option to wait for the next tour which started 2 hours later. When we asked for a refund we were told this was only possible if we were to request it through their website. When we asked how we were going to prove to the website that we hadn't done the tour she agreed there was no guarantee that we would be able to get a refund! This frustrating conversation went on for 15 minutes before we eventually left empty-handed in the hopes that our creditcard company might still be able to get our money back. Basically we can't tell you if this tour is a fun way to spend your time in Reims. We can guarantee you though that Champagnes Pommery will provide you with one of the worst servicelevels you've experienced in your life.
