It is a bit small but the food is amazing. Calamari is super fresh, spicy scampi is buttery and well seasoned. King crab is sweet and spicy, it was kind of a suprise. But we tried many seafood restaurants this weekend and this one is our favorite.

Google
What a fun foodie adventure! 👍 We actually booked a table ahead of time, but apparently the reservation system decided to take a little nap. 😅 No worries though—the lady boss swooped in like a hero and seated us right away. Big thumbs-up for that kind of service! 🩷 Now, onto the star players: 🦞🦀 Garlic Scampi – a tiny kick of spice, super fresh shrimp, perfect portion. Solid 5/5, no notes. Black Pepper King Crab – sweet, juicy, and just plain kingly. Every bite was a happy dance. Bottom line? Forget the drama, just come here and eat—because it’s downright delicious.

We went to Mathallen Hall to get dinner but didn’t know where we should eat, and this restaurant was only seafood option, so we decided to try. Ended up probably this was my most favorite restaurants we tried in Norway. (We stayed only Oslo and Bergen) Bucket of mussels are usually fresh in Norway. The fish soup is the one really showing the character of the restaurant, and I really loved their fish soup. This fish soup was my most favorite fish soup I’ve had in Norway. (I tried 3 different fish soups.) We are very satisfied with our first meal of Norway.

Google
Delicious grilled fish and salad. Friendly staff. It was expensive but I would still visit here for trying other fish options they offer.

Google
This restaurant is so popular! Tried their poke bowl and fish soup – both were amazing. The oysters are a bit small, but still pretty good.

Google
We thought everything was pretty well done and we left happy and full. the fish soup was more filling and yummier than I'd imagined!

I had a great experience at this seafood restaurant. They serve the best fish soup in all of Oslo. And during the season, I was able to try whale meat.

Google
Absolutely loved the poke bowl here. The fish was super fresh and practically melted when eaten- and the combination of mango ananas chutney along with it made the bowl even better.

Yelp
Note this is only about one dish. I had a pretentious Poke bowl for an early dinner. Clearly the line cook does not have a sense of Umami that's is so integral to Asian and Island cuisines. It was so sweet even after adding salt, soy sauce and wasabi a creamy sweet flavor persisted. The proprietor should consult with someone who knows Asian and Pacific based preparations. BTW, it's true Oslo meals are expensive even by San Francisco standards. A cautionary note. FYI they use frozen shrimp and frozen potatoes for their French fries. YIKES

Yelp
I've had a ton of fish and chips and this has to be favorite! The haddock was freshly fried and thinly breaded, soft and flaky on the inside. The tartar sauce had chunks of sweet pickle to add to its tarty flavor, and the peas were plentiful with their kick of mint. The chips themselves were well fried and can be devoured with the tartar or extra ketchup. The portion size was massive, appropriately for its price, and I was incredibly full afterwards. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Locals recommend we check out this place and they were spot on! My wife had to try their popular dish - the Fish Stew, and although expensive, it was absolutely fantastic. Very flavor packed, with a good amount of fish in it. It does have shellfish - so allergic people beware! Mathallen overall had a fantastic vibe. A nice beer place right next to Vulkanfisk as well!

Yelp
I had a great experience there on a rainy night-- had the salmon sashimi (so many pieces) and then the fish soup. If I knew the soup would contain both salmon and whitefish, I might have skipped to just the soup. The soup itself was a nice between hearty and light broth containing so many pieces of seafood! Waitstaff was friendly. Prices are reasonable for what you get.

Yelp
This fishmonger is situated in Oslo's Mathallen, a large trendy space that has a variety of gourmet shops and restaurants. There's a relaxed vibe with people enjoying food and drinks. This place specializes in fresh fish and you can buy anything from fresh whale steaks to prawns and langoustine. Everything looks and tastes very fresh and done to a high standard.

Yelp
Great place for your seafood delights. I loved the fish soup but a lot of people ordered fish n chips. Tried the local draft all out on the cool patio. I def recommend this place.

Yelp
While visiting the mathallen Oslo I stopped her for a beer and a snack. The inside is part of a market so not much to say about the interior (same goes for the outside seating.) After waiting ages for someone to take my order finally I flagged a waiter down. Bad start. I ordered the fiskesuppe. This type of soup is a staple in Norway. And although the mussels were nice and the salmon roe was a nice touch, the overall soup has no flavor and the fish was way overcooked and weirdly dry. Maybe try something else there, but the menu is limited so you think they would nail this. Anyway the market has better options.

Yelp
This was our last meal in Norway, and what a send-off! I wasn't feeling very well that day and decided to order the kids' size fish soup to accommodate my diminished appetite. Luckily, the kids' size was actually pretty big, because this turned out the be the best fish soup I've ever had. It was stuffed with these delicate tiny yellow-fleshed mussels that tasted like they were crossed with the sweetest sea urchin, halibut and salmon simmered to perfection, and piles of trout (or salmon, not sure) roe kept rising to the surface like hidden treasure. The hearty crusty bread that came with it was perfect for sopping up. My dad got a whale burger, which I wouldn't have ordered myself, but I was not above having a couple bites. "Beefy tuna" is my abridged description - but they did cover it in beef fat, so the 'beefy' part could have come from that. Either way, it was irony and delicious and came with excellent onion rings, which we ate out of the burger before having any since it was the only way to shrink it to a size that a mouth could fit around.

Yelp
Part of a large food hall with lots of options. The dinner I chose was the grilled organic salmon fillet with salad and sweet potato fries. You can eat in the restaurant area. I was with friends who wanted a variety of choices. So we ate in the common area and I had a portable buzzer that buzzed me when the food was ready. Then we could all eat the variety of options if the food hall together. The fish was delicious, cooked medium, flaked apart with a fork. If you want wine, beer or an alcoholic beverage, go to Torget Bar. You can enjoy those in the common dining area. Have fun in Norway.

Yelp
Food: Absolutely fresh and delicious! We had our first meal here after landing in Norway and it was such a pleasant surprise! We ordered a dish that was featured around monk fish and the sweet shrimp! Both dishes were full of flavor and it was my first introduction to sweet shrimp here! Cost: The prices were a tad on the more expensive side however considering where we are and that these were seafood dishes, I thought it reflected the meal well. Environment: The place felt like a very busy cafeteria, but more sophisticated! There were various places you can choose to order food from and also buy fresh ingredients/products for the people who live around the area. Service: Good service! Our orders were put in and the food came out without too much wait! Uniqueness: Fresh ingredients for sale and the fact that you can order fresh meals that are made from these ingredients give this place a high uniqueness factor!

Yelp
Seafood here is excellent. We were happy with everything that was on our table. We had a large enough group to sample a number of their dishes and all of them were good. The scampi and the king crab were delicious and were recommended on yelp. The restaurant can seem busy on the ground floor but there is more seating upstairs which most people miss. So, do not turn away if it looks crowded downstairs. Have a peek upstairs before you go somewhere else. This place is good!

Yelp
My family and I ate at Vulkanfisk on a Sunday night as our last big meal in Oslo. I found this restaurant via googling "seafood restaurants", and it met the price point we were looking for (aka something on the cheaper $$ side). OMG everything was AMAZING. I felt like we ordered almost everything off the menu! - Mussels & Fries - Shrimp Plate - Fish of the Day - Seafood soup - Crab Legs - Garlic Shrimp Scampi My personal order was the mussels, and let me tell you, it's a lot of mussels! All the portions were pretty large besides the shrimp scampi. The shrimp plate was amazing, the shrimp was so sweet! Also, the king crab legs had an asian fusion flavor to them (we think they use black bean paste as the seasoning) and it was soooo good, I was dipping bread into the sauce at the end. We were a party of 6, and our bill came out to around $250, which I found very reasonable for a seafood dinner in Norway! (Norway is very expensive) One down side was that there were limited seating for large groups, we got lucky and snagged 2 tables to combine next to each other, so I would recommend more for 2-3 ppl party sizes.

Yelp
Can highly recommend the fish and chips. The service is great and have been a frequent visitor over the years I've lived in Oslo. The other dishes are probably worth trying as well but I keep coming back to the Fish and chips plate to make sure I get full.

Yelp
We circled around the Vulkan food hall, and settled on this place for lunch, which is located at the far end. Glad we did, because the food, as every review attests, is simply delicious. We wanted to try everything, but thankfully the waiter was kind enough to point out that we were ordering too much already, and offered to make just one fish fillet so we don't have to order a whole fish and chips. We ordered the peppered king crab. This is what the menu says: "King crab is the ultimate shellfish Norway can offer. The juicy and sweet crab meat is truly unique." Yup, they did not lie. The crab was freaking finger-licking good indeed, with a spicy pepper sauce and served on a hot plate. Interestingly it is reminiscent of the salt and pepper crab in Chinese or Vietnamese places, lol. Norway also has delicious mussels in its cold water, so we ordered one. A big bowl with plenty of shellfish, in a buttery white wine broth. Again, delicious to the last drop, and at 184kr, a relatively good deal. We practically rolled out of there, so stuffed were we...

Yelp
Food: We split the crab plate, which was pretty good. It was large enough for two people, but would've been way too big for one. The crab was definitely fresh, however it had very little meat in it which was disappointing. It came with garlic bread, a side salad, and three different aliolis. All very good. I would recommend getting a different dish though. Ambience: It's part of a restaurant marketplace, but they have there own little corner, as well their own upstairs seating. It wasn't very crowded. It's a pretty casual place. Service: decent service, we sat at the bar and got served right away. Price: Each dish is between $20-$30 Overall: Good place, I would come back to try something else.

Yelp
King crab is a must here! I don't wanna eat any other similar king crabs in the states anymore! I'm happy to report that the true Norwegian King crab is so fresh, plump, and juicy! The Asian black pepper style of cooking totally brings out the sweet and umani flavors out of the crab meat! Finger-licious! Also it comes with a big bowl of salad with bread so it's definitely can make you full.

Yelp
Yummy fish in a trendy area of Oslo. Enjoyable pub atmosphere. Service was okay, but nothing exceptional.

Yelp
This is a great place to eat dinner, sit outside and enjoy a warm Oslo summer evening. Vulkanfisk is in a great funky part of town with a good vibe. Everyone was enjoying their food and the conversations were lively. I would definitely come again sometime. We had fish stew and fish of the day which was mackerel. The fish stew was excellent. The mackerel was just ok. The plate looked beautiful but guess I am just not a fan of mackerel.. oh well. They only had one Pingnes unfiltered beer on tap but it was pretty tasty, even for my Seattle beer snobby tastebuds. I wholeheartedly recommend coming here. 4 star rating since food was very good, service was excellent and cool location. Just missed 5 star since mackerel was just ok and they didn't have any desserts available (but my waistline thanks you).

Yelp
This place is semi- self service, where you find an empty table, look at the menu, and order for your meal at the bar outside, pay & giv3 them your table number which they will deliver your food. So if you are expecting a full table service this might not be the right place for you. It's very casual and lay back with reasonably priced food and drinks (although everything is $$$$$ in Oslo). We shared fish & chips and mussels paired with beer & wine. The food was very delicious but more importantly we enjoyed the nice spring breeze and the relaxed ambiance, taking a short break from our biking tour.

Yelp
I was taken aback over how pricey food, even fish, is in Norway. That said 245 kr for basic plates can cause sticker shock . However the soup, fish and chips and mussels were delightful. If you can just have one go for the soup. Tasty stock and hearty. It's a generous portion and it won't disappoint. You can ask them not to make it spicy and they will accommodate. It's slightly out of the way but worth the find

Yelp
When you're in Norway, you tend to expect wallet breaking prices for restaurant food. However, there are certain restaurants that are a dime a dozen...Vulkanfisk is that gem. Shrimp scampi - The shrimp here is fresh. While you will be left hungry if this is the only thing you order, the dish was executed well. I mean, who doesn't love butter :P Fish soup - A cream based soup with loads of flavor. Again, this is appetizer size so be warned. Mussels - The defining dish at this restaurant. These are probably some of the meatiest and crazy-freshest (is that even a word?) mussels I have ever had in my entire life. Steaming these mussels in a garlic alcohol broth only makes things better. Don't even hesitate, just order it. The portion-size is also justified in terms of getting your money's worth. Could this be the best thing I ate at Norway? (::nod) Service is a bit on the slower side as the waiters all double as cooks, dishwashers, servers, etc. Come here at least an hour before they close as I saw them turning away people 30 minutes before closing time. 5 stars.

Yelp
Disappointing. Good fish, bad technique. I had so high hopes for Vulkanfisk, being THE fish place in a gourmet Mathallen. I have turned back several times because of its high prices, but kept thinking, when the time comes I shall have great fish here. Reality? The quality of the fish is a level above standard, but they don't know how to the treat their product that it deserves. We tried classic mussels cooked in white wine (kr 162,-) and a Sushi mix (kr 299,-), well above standard prices. The mussels were ok, but the cooking liquid was too bitter, felt made with a lower grade wine, and not all pleasant on its own. The fries came out bland, not crispy at all. When you're doing Belgian-style mussels and fries, you MUST double-fry your fries, that's a rule. They didn't do that. Instead, the fries was no better than what you get at any of Oslo's cheap kebab place. The sushi had a few good products, like the tuna. However, the miso soup was added with an off-putting coconut-seafood flavor, the rice was unimpressive, and the seafood was too cold on the rice. They flirted using mango in their maki which does not work at all, trying too hard to impress. If they just have a very classic sushi done right to showcase their product, it would be better. If this sounds like nitpicking, I am indeed nitpicking. When you pay at premium prices, you expect everything to come out perfectly too. Instead, this came out rather disappointingly after waiting so long. Next time I might just buy their fish and prepare it myself at home.

Yelp
We walked 10 km to get here. Not directly or specifically you understand, but after a hard day at it, Mathallen Vulkan was just about worth it. Not life changingly worth it, but satisfying nevertheless. We were almost going to give up, as our last stint was a hard 2.5k hill slog from the opera house, but on seeing Vulkanfisk (our particular destination within Mathallen Vulkan) it was the right thing to do* All the menus are bilingual, so English is well catered for (where isn't in Oslo?). But it was an easy choice of fish and chips and the 310 Krone (£25) sushi platter. Both were fantastically fresh and served with absolute joy (well, a smile really). Tbh the pricing of the platter cost more than picking individual sushi items and adding them up, but it came with a gorgeous fish soup which they kindly split into two bowls to share. Great service, great food, great place! I would say we'll be back, but I'm 99% sure we won't as my pocket can only afford Oslo once a decade :( *2.5k = 150 calories of extra eating.

Dannie W.

Yelp
I would say the food here is delicate. They look so nice. The fish soup with salmon, cod/halibut, and mussels are very good. The mussels are super fresh. One of my favorite here. Today's fish dinner has a lot of different things together. The one that amazed me the most is the potatoes. I'm not a potato fan, but I love how they are cooked here! Lutefisk is a very interesting dish. Dried cod soaked in caustic soda is good in the beginning because the fish is not dry at all. But the strong flavor started to come out and then it's hard to eat later. It probably can taste better with the mustard. They also sell fresh seafood here. Wish I could also try the king crab and Norwegian lobster as well.

Yelp
Fish soup was absolutely delicious - fresh, light, satisfying (with plenty of amazing bread to soak up every last drop!) Each piece of salmon and white fish was tender and perfectly cooked, the peas and thin strands of carrots and leeks were MMM excellent, the broth was light and beautiful. Only downer was that one of my mussels was bad, but even so this is still the best fish soup I have EVER had, and it's spoiled me for life now. The service was wonderful too, very friendly and quick! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Wow - what a treat finding this place during our visit to Oslo this summer. Vulkanfisk is one of the few reasonably priced places to eat in Oslo and the food was so yummy. We sat outside in their courtyard and had the best fish and chips, delicious fish soup and oh my goodness so good fish of the day! Add a yummy bottle of wine and you get a delicious dinner! Highly recommend if traveling through Oslo.

Yelp
We came here to this Resurant with the family and kids , it was nice food and good service , there are more than Resturant and different types of food in the hall of court food

Viv N.

Yelp
Amazing. It's in Mathallen (which I neglected to realize while planning). Amazing vibe. Super helpful hosts and chefs (we sat right at the bar). Fish soup - I wanted the "traditional" thing and was met with a delicious, light, not "fishy" soup. All the pieces of fish played nicely with the light cream. Amaaaaaaazing. I would 100% eat this again and again. Lutefisk - because we wanted another Norwegian tradition. It was baked and topped with peas, a sweet mustard, traditional potato "bread" (tortilla that I cannot spell) with a sweet brown sauce. The fish itself was weird to me (uncultured American) but all the sides brought it together. A great experience. The bread you get as a starter is ALSO AWESOME. Garlic aioli was very garlicky. The music they had on in the background really made it for me. Bowie, Queen, Genesis... Definitely go here.

Yelp
FISH SOUP IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER EATEN IN MY LIFE Go and get the fish soup. Incredibly expensive (compared to every other country in the world, I guess not compared to the rest of Oslo though) but literally worth every penny. If I lived in Oslo, I would spend every special occasion here eating the fish soup. It's so so so good.

Evan O.

Yelp
We randomly found this place and it smelled so good we thought to give it a try. We are SO happy we did. The food was incredible! Some of the best we've had in Norway. We ordered the fish of the day, which was a whole sea bass, baked. And wow. It was the best. Truly. We will return.

Yelp
Solid four stars--a lovely, lively place with fantastic food. I Was happy to try two types of local ousters: the fin de claire and the tsarskaya. Both were light, semi-sweet pearls of deliciousness that went down too easily. The fish soup was incredible--light, flavorful, fresh, w/a hint of lemongrass and the fresh bread helped pull it all together (read some of the other reviews on the fish soup). Oh, and the beer--the Frydenlund on draft(.4L) was advertised as a pale ale but had a unique flavor that I'm not sure it was a PA. I am liking Oslo thus far!!!

Muj A.

Yelp
We arrived very close to closing time and the host was kind enough to allow us to sit and eat anyway. After the meal, since we are travelers, he even recommended places to go/things to do in Oslo. As for the food, all of our items were delicious.
google avatar

Mitch L.

Yelp
The seafood we had here was decent for the most part, but nothing to write home about. They were out of shrimp as well, which was rather annoying. What really merits the low ranking was the poor service we received while we were there. Either the waiter was stretched too thin, which is quite possible due to the number of tables he had with no help, or we just were not his favorite client for the night. I suggest looking elsewhere for food while in the market.

Yelp
DO TRY dagens fisk. That particular day's chef's creation was one of the best meals I've ever eaten - https://i.imgbox.com/98G2cOPG.jpg

Yelp
Vulkanfisk at Mathalen offers a selective range of sushi and a daily fish. I opted for the daily fish which was cod with asparagus and potatoes with white sauce. It was absolutely delicious and I didn't need my knife to cut through the fish. My friends opted for a platter of sashimi which they said was delicious. I would definitely recommend this booth/resturaunt for a delicious meal bearing in mind it isn't a fancy area. its more laid back but it still works for a date! Might even be preferable. The waiter knew us as the girls who licked their plates ;) Ice cream desert will be just around the corner, too!

S V.

Yelp
The fish and service were excellent - at a great price too! We got the shrimp and the special and didn't regret it one bit. We would highly recommend this place but go early as they tend to sell out of popular dishes.
