Yelp
My favorite subway station, here's why: W: West Village; best place to dine, shop, sightsee and hear live jazz E: Eating capital of NYC S: SOHO T: Tribeca, not so far F: F train or D back to Brooklyn O: Opened on September 10th, 1932. My birthday is September 10th but not born in 1932, obviously, lol. See, besides my birth, other great occurrences happened on this day :) U: Underground Jazz Club. Hear untapped talent before they get famous. R: Restaurants nearby that are my faves: The Little Owl, Extra Virgin, Piccolo Cucina Osteria, Morandi T: Transfer to the A, C, E trains H: Home of my beloved Blue Note Positively West Fourth Street!

Yelp
While always a hot, horrible experience there is some improvement inr ecent times: There are fewer crazy homeless sprawled on the benches and bothering people

Yelp
Best way to get around. I just hope it gets cleaner. Different subway lines stop here and there are officers posted nearby now.

Yelp
OMG! Be careful exiting the train station. Homeless people literally made sleeping area before exiting the turnstiles, also near the token both as well as the entrance going out of train station. Very sad how it smells like a urinal. It's like 5-6 homeless people in the area. NYC has a huge homeless population that needs to be tended to. More and more are finding shelter at the subway stations and on the trains with the cooler weather. Trains running on holiday/weekend schedule. No E train. The ambiance of West 4th Street station is marred by stinky smells whether you head in or out of the entrances of the subway station. The exit area we used was towards 8th Avenue. Not the side with a walkway you have to pass through before exiting. Be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. Happy Holidays all. No photos it was to stinky to whip out phone, hold breath even with mask on to take the time to take a snapshot.

Yelp
If you like rats in the subway, then 5 stars for West 4th! Also, it's not raining outside and hasn't been since this morning, but we're still enjoying a light shower down on the lower platform--I don't know whether it's trickle down rain or some sort of leak, and I'm not sure which to be more worried about; probably the leak. Two stars rather than one because lots of trains stop here and there's good stuff up at street level. The station itself is disgusting. But it feels less disgusting in some respects than its sibling one stop south, Broadway Lafayette, which is darker and feels even danker, although you can get the 6 there, both directions now, and that's pretty useful; definitely fewer rats there. So West 4th is gross, but it's certainly not alone in that respect.

Yelp
After having dinner, walking up West Houston, Mcdougal, Cornelia and Bleecker and then taking some photos in Washington Square this was the closest station we could take to get back to Canal street towards SoHo. I can see how this can be a very busy station being that it's close to NYU this West 4 Street/Washington Square Station serves 7 lines (A-C-E-B-D-F-M). It's yet another subway station very close to a city square/park. There are so many I've lost count.

Yelp
If you've ever wondered what sewer workers have to smell, make this your frequent destination. This busy hub that the A,C,E, F,M,D,B, can be prized for the number of lines that pass through here. The locale and convenience can't be beat. So why the low rating for such positives? Well, this station can also be feared for the stench that on some days, reminds me of what my apartment smelled like when I came home and discovered naughty Kittyboy had taken a dump and maliciously kicked it all over my walls. Cleanliness has certainly deteriorated over the years. There are also many homeless that congregate on the two level platforms at all hours. I have ceased to sit on any of the benches here. It's a never-ending battle for the MTA folk that battle those who use this station as a public toilet. Sometimes, like holidays, MTA cleaners are off or scarce. Then, the stank odor here could make you believe you've keeled and are seeing the tunnel of light. I use this station much and think it's sad that it's declined. As it is one of the busiest stations, it should have more exits rather than the two at each end. I won't bother with scary details but it wasn't pleasant being down here when there was a track fire and people were trying to flee. The escalators here generally work. The elevators here will either smell of disinfectant or reek of human waste. Touch nothing but the buttons you need to and beware who gets on with you. There is a recently installed touchscreen that maps out your destination and arrivals. The F,D,M,B trains must have disabled their GPS because the info on it hasn't been accurate for months. I advise against breaking out your bag of chips after you've tapped the screen and you will be healthy enough to finish your trip.

Yelp
Very bad unsanitary. The train station has lots of negative factors. Such as the homeless laying on the floor smoking crack/weed in the train after 7 PM also they sleep their all day. The benches were removed of their back wood peace for the back rest. It still doesn't solve the homelessness problem. The issue is way to great it needs to be addressed the people are being impacted by the overcrowded train station and rats running around spreading such diseases..

Yelp
This is the subway station closest to the hotel I stay at in Greenwich Village. Not just this station but every station I was in on a recent trip was clean and in working order. No complaints but this Midwesterner who is used to driving her car everywhere. The subway works!

Anthony S.

Yelp
Let's just say, this is not the cleanest or well kept station in NYC. Minus the graffiti, it doesn't look like this stop has been touched since the 1970's. When the weather is especially warm, there is usually an odor of garbage wafting through the air, which may or may not add a certain charm to the station, depending on your mood. But hey, the trains keep chugging along, so I guess that's what's most important.

Yelp
This station opened on Saturday, September 10th, 1932 and is awesome and crumbling. It brings together the 6th avenue and 8th avenue lines--originally called the Independent, or IND lines. As a matter of fact, this station was the birthplace of the IND subway, which was conceived with the intention of relieving the severe overcrowding on the IRT (Interboro Rapid Transit) lines--both east and west. As a result, and something most people are probably aware of: the wheelbase of IRT trains is narrower than IND or BMT trains; therefore, they cannot run on their tracks. (7th avenue trains occasionally swap with Lexington avenue trains, you know.) http://www.nycsubway.org/articles/historyindependentsubway.html There are improvements going in, including elevators--making this station fully accessible. There's an elevator at 3rd street into the station, and one running from the A platform down to the F platform. But as of this writing, most of the tiles are the original glass tiles of this station, which I find pretty cool--even though some are falling off the walls. Some of the best performers play this station; it is easily the coolest subway station around. I regularly take the M8 bus to and from here, since there is no entrance on West 4th street--only on West 3rd and West 8th streets.

Yelp
Located conveniently in Greenwich Village, I frequent here quite a lot specially during weekends. It is a express station and transfer stop on the IND Sixth Avenue and IND Eighth Avenue Lines of the Subway and is located at the intersection of West Fourth Street and Sixth Avenue in Greenwich Village. One can catch - *A, D, E, and F trains at all times; *B and M trains on weekdays; *C train at all times except late nights I always find artists here playing some different kind of instruments. There are ample benches to sit onto at this station and it is very clean unlike other subway stations.

Monica T.

Yelp
It's a nice hub & you can get to a lot of different subways but I do get turned around here on occasion. Often, the trains will run to this stop even when the MTA decides to start with the weekend station closures. Getting an A/C train here can be torturous on a late weeknight. Otherwise, it's your basic subway station with stairs & an older elevator. It's one of those that symbolizes the real NYC experiences so I'd advise a tourist who really wants to know what an average subway station is like to come to this one, among others.

Yelp
Essential to Greenwich Village. This station unites A, C, D, E, F, B, M trains as a major hub for strap hangers to make connections. Exit to street is on the A and C platform. Yes, dark, dingy and of course filthy. Elevators are available for the physically challenge (when working). Public announcements from MTA for service alerts are minimal and mostly inaudible. Upon exiting you are in direct sight of the famous West 4th Street Basketball Courts and the adjacent street is IFC Theater, Fay Da Bakery.

Glenn C.

Yelp
Yeah this place somewhat smells but the fact that the A, C, D, E, F, B, and M trains all stop here is really quite good. Excellent phone signal, at least on the upper A/C floor (below that, not as much.) It's essential for the area and I like it quite a lot.

Shenia R.

Yelp
This station is the worse station I've ever been to. The walls are damaged and always leaking,Piss all over the platform, homeless people on every train car (E train). Just awful. You'll also see piles of vomit here and there

Tova B.

Yelp
I'm shocked this station gets such a high rating. It looks to be crumbling. Sure, the ceiling hasn't fallen in, yet, but that's no reason to give an extra star. The ceiling does look like it'll be collapsing any day now. Yes, it's a hub, transfers available to the A,C, E, B, D, F and M trains (man, I sound like a train conductor), but that's under the assumption that the B actually shows up. Spoiler alert, you'll be standing on this platform for at least twenty minutes, watching the D, F and M train breeze by. Speaking on breezes, how nice is that breeze of hot air in the summer?! Sure it smells like urine, but it breaks up the 115 degree weather we have down in the bowels of west 4th. 70 degrees and a little humid outside? Expect 120 degrees with 100% humidity on the platform. The tropics got nothing on us. Although, I don't think I'll be laying down a towel and trying to tan down there.

Yelp
Not a bad station, West 4 st depending on the days, station looks very clean but at night it's a totally different story, after 11Pm to 5am very dirty, messy, smells like urine, and trash on the tracks, many homeless and drunk people hanging out specially on the weekend, it also needs a serious up grade.

Dominik D.

Yelp
I love the neighborhood this lets you off in. There's so much life bustling by, day or night. The station has been pretty clean nearly every time I've been there and the trains come frequently and reliably.

Chuan Wu P.

Yelp
When i after school get the E train come here form the D train, but it was about every 10 min come one D train and it was about pass through three F train! I don't know does MTA think about why in 6ave don't have much people take the EXP train, that's because in W4 st you alway saw the local first and never saw the Exp train.

Mike J.

Yelp
Definitely a hub for many subway lines ... the only place where the A, B,C, D, E and F meet up - great for quickly interchanging between these trains ( if the slow fuc&ers will get out of my way that is! ). Mostly I'm just changing trains but sometimes I enter and exit to go to either my favorite ice cream place ( Cones on Bleecker Street ) or meeting up with a cousin to take them around the Village sight-seeing or even to get to a Yelp event for brunch! :-) The northern exit brings you to the junction of 6th Avenue, Greenwich Avenue and West 8th Street while the southern exit puts you at the movie theater, basketball courts and Mc Donald's at 3rd Street and 6th Avenue. Whether you need the Blue ( A/C/E ) or Orange ( B/D/F ), just come here ... an 80-year-old station in the heart of NYU-ville.

Kenneth K.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Hard to not appreciate the most convenient stop in the West Village. As an NYU film student living on Greenwich Street with most of his extended family in Queens, this stop is like a godsend to me, not to mention all the great food stores, bakeries and restaurants surrounding it. Come out of the station on West 3rd Street (not West 8th Street, where there's a dollar pizzeria and Duane Reade) and you're literally in front of a Fay Da Bakery and the IFC Theater. West 4th Street Station would get 5 stars from me if it weren't so bare and still pretty typical of NYC subway stations--i.e. rats, pounds of garbage between the tracks, rub hands with Purell if they touch anything, breezes of exhaust, rub hands with Purell even if they don't touch anything, yellowing tile walls with grit-filled lines and crevices and blackening platform floors. But really, for an underground station over 80 years old, it's been kept pretty well otherwise. What is said in other reviews is correct: This place is a highly functional relic, with no decorations or adornments. It's a proud, tired thing, and an important landmark of this city.

J A.

Yelp
Screen for arriving trains is NEVER accurate. It's completely worthless. No idea where the data comes from.

Daniel M.

Yelp
The whole place doesn't wreak of urine, and the posters are always worth reading. There is an escalator and elevator at this station to switch between the Orange and blue lines. The elevator smells like itinerary but that's because it's New York and every subway elevator smells like urine. If you enter on the south side, 4 of every 5 times you will find a group of people checking if the 5-0 is watching so they can try to jump the turn sty. On the north west entrance there is usually a guy with a guitar that knows how to make it sing. Great location for a subway, lots of connections.

Yelp
Chances are my review won't be as insightful as Kevin's, but head to the real listing just in case you want to review the thoughts of others (mine are pasted below via http://www.yelp.com/biz/west-4th-street-subway-station-new-york-2 ) Depending on your approach and your exit strategy, the walking sometimes involved at this station can make you reconsider your opinion of it as a hub. That said, it's easily the most convenient station in a 'hood that is shockingly lacking in reliable lines. It's also a duplicate listing http://www.yelp.com/biz/west-4th-street-subway-station-new-york

Yelp
so goddamn hot in this place it feels like your about to have a heat stroke they need to seriously do somethhing why does the c and e trains come so infrequently??? sweated out my freakin perm

Clementine C.

Yelp
You can't escape this station, and it's one worth leaving to visit the surrounding area - here's why: I really like a station that allows me to walk underground a few blocks so that I don't freeze in the winter. DIRTY - It's pretty filthy, which is the usual standard of Subway Stations. However, it at least doesn't smell like fish (lookin at you, Chinatown subways) TRAINS - The station connects BDFM with the ACE - what more do you need? The connection is two sets of stairs... super fast SURROUNDINGS - there are SO MANY EXCELLENT SPOTS nearby... old Little Italy with phenomenal restaurants on Carmine, movie theaters, bars, parks....

Ming T.

Yelp
It's a train station with 2 exits....one at west 3rd street and on the other end, west 8th street. I usually exit at the 8th street side...and I usually exit in the early morning.....what scares me the most about this station is not the bums that sometimes hang near the staircase but the big rats that run around the turnstile area.....eeks, run b*tch RUN!!!!!

Christopher M.

Yelp
Not bad. Multiple train lines, and a decent amount of entrances/exits. Not that it can be helped, but it is a little annoying that you can't easily stand in the stairwell to see if the Blue or Orange line will come first. But it's not too shabby...if a bit run down....and I kinda like the ramp leading down to the A/C/E platform :-)

Jessica L.

Yelp
Is it me or the b train going back to Brooklyn got replaced by the d line I just to take the b home soon as I jump off the m train
