9 Museum Openings Worth Planning Trips Around in 2020

"Come November, Western Australia will see its history reimagined when a $261.6 million complex devoted to the plants, animals, and people of its region opens in Perth. The project incorporates parts of the area’s existing Western Australian Museum Perth—including four heritage-listed buildings that have been refurbished—and also sees to the addition of a new state-of-the-art museum, effectively tripling the size of the former institution. The purpose-built space will feature eight new galleries, including a space devoted to touring exhibitions, plus learning studios and a new retail boutique and café. International design studios Hassell and OMA are behind the wildly imaginative project, whose cavernous spaces, gold glass, and metallic finish were, according to press releases, inspired by the wild landscapes of Western Australia. In that same spirit, forthcoming exhibitions will spotlight the state’s rich mineral heritage and celebrate its Aboriginal culture."

Went to see the Terra Cotta warriors exhibition. Fantastic place for the whole family. There's something for everyone. Exhibitions are interesting and well planned. As they controlled the number of people going in, it wasn't too crowded. Price was reasonable as well. Lots of volunteers to help provide direction and take photos for you.

Amazing museum for both children and adults. The kids enjoyed it so much that we spent whole day here until the museum closed! They have great exhibits and lots of interesting facts and information. There were many activities set up for children as well. The staff were all very kind, particularly with children - they were really sweet.

Absolutely amazing!! A combination of modern technology and antique!! This is absolutely the best exhibition I have ever seen in Perth. With a short but beautiful movie as an introduction, I appreciated the beautiful history of Qin Dynasty. It also has some cute funny interactions, which making the whole exhibition even better.

Often enjoy coming here but it can be hard to navigate the museum. For example finding a giant blue whale Skelton is surprisingly difficult. Terracotta Statues are amazing but it is “really” busy at the moment. If you don’t like crowds give it some time and don’t visit on the school holidays. Will be here until Feb 2026 so plenty of time.

Tucked in the cultural heart of Perth, this isn't just a museum. It's a carefully woven storybook of Western Australia, bursting at the seams with stories of land, people, sea, science and spirit. The architecture alone deserves a chapter. Old-world heritage walls embrace sleek, modern lines like a respectful handshake between history and the future. Walk through its halls and you’ll feel that time doesn’t just pass here, it lingers, it listens. From the awe-striking blue whale skeleton suspended like a floating guardian to the deeply moving First Nations narratives, everything is told with reverence and care. You don’t just read plaques here, you feel connections. You don’t just look at exhibits, you travel through them. There’s a magical rhythm in how science and art blend. Dinosaur bones whisper to you, meteorites silently hum of galaxies far away, and a jar of Vegemite somehow feels just as significant. Only at Boola Bardip can you go from ancient megafauna to modern marsupials, with kids giggling through interactive screens and adults just as spellbound. If you're visiting with little ones (like my own curious toddler), rest assured, there are spaces designed for wide eyes and little hands. And if you're solo or with friends, it's equally rewarding. Every corridor has something to say. You just have to pause and listen.

I’ve been to WA Museum Boola Bardip several times, and it’s always an interesting visit. Recently, I came to experience The Great Kimberley Wilderness VR Experience and explore the Spinifex People Exhibition. The Kimberley VR experience was impressive. It captured the beauty of the region with its unique landscapes, from waterfalls to the Bungle Bungles and underwater scenes. The VR made it feel very realistic, almost like being there in person. The show lasted about 35 minutes, but I did notice some eye strain and lightheadedness afterward, which took a bit of time to adjust to normal lighting. Despite that, I think it’s worth trying if you enjoy immersive experiences. Before the VR session, I visited the Spinifex People Exhibition upstairs. It provided a good insight into their lives, traditions, and connection to their land through paintings and artworks. It was a thought-provoking and well-curated display. I also made my usual stop on level three to see the dinosaurs in the permanent wildlife exhibition. It’s always a fun experience and reminds me of my childhood movie Jurassic Park 🦕🦖 The museum is conveniently located in the middle of the city, right next to the CPP State Library parking and easily accessible by bus or train. It also has a gift shop on the lower level and a small café, making it easy to spend a relaxed day exploring. Overall, it was another enjoyable visit. The museum is a great place to explore history, art, and culture, with something new to discover every time

The place was really awesome. It was my first time visiting the museum. But since I had to attend an event I didn't get much time to explore the museum. Sure drop in some day. But sitting under the heritage grapevines 🍇 and hearing the traditional music play on the outdoor speakers it really gave me a vibe of the transition of this great land back then. With full respect I say It's really a great blessing and an honor to stand on this land. It's a really wonderful way to know about the past and to connect to history.

Great museum - being not a big museum person definitely enjoyed our family time in Perth Museum. Big, full of different exhibitions, was great to learn something new about Australia&WA. Cheers
