9 Museum Openings Worth Planning Trips Around in 2020

"Come November, Western Australia will see its history reimagined when a $261.6 million complex devoted to the plants, animals, and people of its region opens in Perth. The project incorporates parts of the area’s existing Western Australian Museum Perth—including four heritage-listed buildings that have been refurbished—and also sees to the addition of a new state-of-the-art museum, effectively tripling the size of the former institution. The purpose-built space will feature eight new galleries, including a space devoted to touring exhibitions, plus learning studios and a new retail boutique and café. International design studios Hassell and OMA are behind the wildly imaginative project, whose cavernous spaces, gold glass, and metallic finish were, according to press releases, inspired by the wild landscapes of Western Australia. In that same spirit, forthcoming exhibitions will spotlight the state’s rich mineral heritage and celebrate its Aboriginal culture."

Interesting museum focusing on the history and flora and fauna of WA. There are lots of interactive and audio-visual exhibits. So you could easily spend a morning or afternoon at the Museum. The highlight of my visit in October 2025 was seeing the entrants in the Lester Prize. Multiple or return visits can be made as an annual membership is the same cost as a day General Admission ticket when I visited. Staff and volunteers were welcoming and helpful.

Great morning here. They have some of the Terracotta Soldiers on display. Great exhibit which starts with around 5 to 6 minutes of intro talk and video. Enought information but not too much so well judged. Loved the exhibit itself. Very well presented. If you get chance to see before end if 22 Feb 2026 then do go and see it.

Excellent precinct to see an exhibition. Somewhat difficult access at present with renovations around the museum and library areas. The terracotta warrior display could have run better if people are able to go in and out freely without being in groups. This is done successfully in Brisbane with the Egyptian exhibition. Maybe they could look at this next time.

I visited about two hours before closing, so it wasn’t crowded and I could enjoy the exhibition at a relaxed pace. The displays were very impressive and made me feel as if I had actually traveled to China. The history was explained in detail through videos and exhibits, which made it very interesting. Many of the displayed items were made of precious metals and still shone beautifully, which was hard to believe considering their age. I’d love to come back next time to see the permanent exhibitions as well.

WA Museum Boola Bardip is located in the arts and culture hub of Perth. Boola Bardip meaning ‘many stories’ in the traditional Nyoongar language, the Museum provides a bold, dynamic setting for Western Australia's fascinating stories, history and culture to unfold through state-of-the-art technology and innovative interactive exhibits. Rising majestically above the heritage buildings of Perth’s Cultural Centre, this modern marvel encompasses 6,000 square metres of gallery space, including a 1,000 square metre large-scale exhibition space. Entry cost:> All tickets: Free - $15 Children: Free

Decided at the last moment to go see the Terracotta Warriors display. We were interested but didn't know what to expect. The whole 4 hours we ended up here were incredible. From the smiling friendly staff all through the exhibit, to the stunning display of these amazing artifacts everything was brilliant. I think I read and studied every well composed information card, was overawed by the age and beauty of the displayed items. Sometimes the last minute things turn ot to be most memorable, this was one of those times.

Took the time to visit Boola Bardip Museum and by chance they had a special exhibit of the Qin terracotta warriors. It was a very well presented exhibit with a very beautiful, very serene visual representation of the proposed afterlife of the emperor. Following that the museum was very informative with the specifics of WA and the geology of the area and the mineral rich land it occupies. If you have the time it is worth a visit.

Attended the Terracotta Warriors exhibition and learnt a lot of new knowledge. The Terracotta Warriors were placed at various points of the exhibition and there was even an interactive element throughout (magnetic fridge magnet activated lights in a box to reveal a secret item). Would recommend this to any one who loves learning about history.
