This was recommended by our hotel at Ishibekoji Muan - I am so glad we asked for yakitori recommendations! I was pleasantly surprised by the shark fin and egg, then the chicken … mousse … over fried potato. We began with the chicken thighs, and this truly set the stage for a strong meal. It was tender and succulent, and the skin had a nice crisp and fattiness that carried the two pepper condiments incredibly well. This was followed by the neck, then heart. The grilled veggies didn’t have the same charcoal smokiness, but perhaps this was intentional as it was a welcomed break between yakitori courses. The chicken soup was absolutely delightful. It was mixed with soy milk, and contained yuba and chicken, likely rendered tender with cornstarch slurry. If you ever were curious about how 锅边 tastes like, this is it. At this point, we went off the menu and selected the tail, thighs, cartilage, and liver. Id probably rank them in that order too. The tail was incredible, a wonderful balance of cartilaginous meat. I’d absolutely recommend this restaurant!

The chicken is good, order a wine pairing and the waitress just put down the wine and never trying to explain what she is serving, it gives you a feeling of eating in a French restaurant with the French waitress snapping on your face lol

Lunch set menu only has 2 options of oyakodons, both are innovative takes - the seasonal one is a carbonara when I went so it was Cheesy. To be honest, we didn’t really enjoy this meal but that might be a personal preference. The service and atmosphere and everything else was great though, the oyakodon itself just felt tasteless.

This was without a doubt the best meal I’ve had in Kyoto, and more specifically, Japan. Special thank you to Kazuya Hashiguchi for getting us the final table even though we did not have a reservation. This experience all started because of him! Our host, Naoki Murakami was 10/10. Not only with his attendance during our meal, but with his incredible sense of humor doing so in his 2nd language. He was beyond great. The textures, flavors, ambiance - it was all such an amazing night of eating. Wabiya Korekido has an amazing culinary team, and even more incredible staff running the shop. It was truly an experience of a lifetime.

Very nice experience. Book in advance and try the dessert They only have one item on the menu, their rice chicken bowl. You can choose small, medium or large size. Optional drink. The ginger ale is really good and not too sweet. Tourist and local friendly.

Great food. Shu was very friendly and explained each dish. My personal favorite restaurant on a trip to Japan. Generous portions. We ended up ordering up a few more pieces because it was so delicious. Wishing this restaurant the best.

Since most of the reviews focus on their lunch service, I’ll share some details about our quite fantastic course dinner experience here. It is chicken, but definitely elevated. 9 courses in total, starting with some nice ‘umami snacks’ as an amuse bouche. Next up was a wonder egg cream topped with caviar that came inside a beautiful ceramic egg shell. The kids thought this was quite clever. There were two yakitori courses, first 3 and then 4 later. They offered two different spice mixes to dip, and usually suggested one or the other for each piece. I found they both worked well with just about everything. Included yakitori were thigh with scallions, breast (which was skin on and very nicely moist), heart, gizzard, neck, chicken meatballs cooked at the table with a balsamic sauce, and one other I’m not recalling. All were delicious. The best yakitori I’ve had? Not quite, but definitely solid. In between the yakitori courses they served some nice chargrilled vegetables and some wonderful chicken soup with a most flavorful broth. Also served was a chicken tempura piece with a super thin wrap, almost like an egg roll. Fried yuba perhaps. Lastly rice and a small dessert. We had rice leftover and they wrapped it up as onigiri to go. A nice touch. Everything was delicious, and the service through out was excellent - very attentive and with detailed explanations in English for each dish.
