So, originally being a Londoner, I was very excited to hear that they were opening a branch of Wahaca in Brighton. Wahaca speaks to my love of small plates and Mexican food.
Boyfriend and I went last Saturday night. It was packed, understandable as it is a new restaurant so lots of Brightonians have been checking it out, and it was a beautifully sunny weekend in Brighton so lots of tourist trade also, and the first weekend of the Fringe. This isn't so much of a problem, knowing this we tried to book a table, however, they have a policy of not taking bookings after 6pm (we were trying to book for 8:30pm). The logic behind this is apparently that they have a quick turn around of tables so you can just have a drink at the bar. I don't particularly like this policy, as most other places have a a combination of the two where they hold some but not all tables for reservations.
Anyhow, we decided to go along anyway, we went at around half 8 and it was an hour and a half wait. We sat in the bar during this time and had a couple of drinks which was fine, but the skeptic in me thinks this is a money making scheme...
Anyway, when we did get to the table the service was great. Emily, our waitress was bubbly and chatty, amazing given that she had been working for 11 hours at that point!
We ordered steak tacos with cheese, ancho chicken tacos, fish tacos, chorizo and potato quasedilla and crab and shrimp taquito. Now I can't stand seafood but boyfriend loves it so he was pleased to see the new taquito on the menu. He was satisfied but said he had had better. For both of us the star of the show was the ancho chicken tacos, new to the menu and probably the best dish I've had a wahaca on any of my visits to their London branches! Lovely and spicy and flavoursome.
We were both really full but I couldn't leave without getting my churro fix so we shared a portion (which I ate most of). They were a little overcooked but still lovely.
Overall a lovely meal, though I may refrain from going back on a weekend until the buzz around the place has died down somewhat, might be one for a weekday lunch on a day off from work.
