The Can’t-Miss Surf Spots on Hawaii’s Big Island, According to a Water-Sports Pro

"If I get rained out, my wife, Stevee, and I love to spend time at the Waimea Coffee Company. Friends stop in, and the owner, Max, is always there. It's small and has a great vibe. My go-to is a cortado or a quad dirty chai with coconut milk."

Google
The coolest coffee shop we visited in Hawaii. They won me over when Young the Giant was playing when we walked in. The chai latte was the best I’ve ever had. My husband’s cold brew was also delicious. And the breakfast burrito melt was superb. (It’s huge, so definitely something you can split if you have a more filling drink). So happy we stopped here!!

Google
Great little coffee shop we stopped at on a whim while driving around sightseeing. It was the end of the day and staff was starting to clean things up but were all very friendly and happy to help us. There's also some shopping, restrooms, and plenty of parking in the same complex for those who arrive during more favorable hours than we did. Would definitely stop by again when back in the area. My iced mocha was great.

Google
Excellent little coffee shop in Waimea Hawaii. They have some of the best coffee I've ever drank, I got the pour over coffee medium roast. Their Acai bowls are delicious, their bagels are fresh, and the brownies are fantastic. We were here almost every day of our trip. Looking forward to coming back one day soon.

Google
Super cute coffee spot with excellent coffee, very reasonably priced. Lots of breakfast options. A few tables inside and out. Very friendly service.

Google
The owner was amazing! And so was the staff! Made me a great Carmel macchiato and wasn’t even on the menu! And tasted better than Starbucks or any macchiato I’ve ever had. They also have the greatest burrito! Amazing place, which there was one in the Chicago area!

Google
A very fun spot in an amazing corner of town! The woman taking out order was helpful (and funny! “This is the mocha with .. lots of extra shots”) and the food, while simple, was delicious

Google
Excellent coffee shop in Waimea. Stopped on the way to Hapuna Beach from Waipio Valley lookout. Kids ran around the lawn in the front keeping a distance from the big roosters. Everyone else got great coffee. Their cappuccino was “strong” if you care about those sorts of details :)

Google
This is a great place to stop while driving around the Big Island. The coffee is great, the service is great, and the food is delicious. You can sit outside and enjoy the view while eating your food surrounded by beautiful views and gift shops with lots of unique items.

Yelp
We stopped by this location of Waimea Coffee on our last full day on the Big Island while on a drive from Kona to Honoka'a. This location in conveniently located in the heart of Waimea and makes it a great place to stop along your respective journey. The interior of the cafe is very quaint and lively and it has sort of a modern village type of vibe going on. It was very busy that particular morning but the staff were still very personable and the service didn't take that long which was great given we were on a set schedule. The Americano and Ice Latte we ordered were very well done; the Americano was at the right temperature and the Latte was well balanced and was not too sweet or too milky. We also ordered bagels with cream cheese to go and the bagels were toasted just right. I'll definitely come back again on my next trip to the Big Island.

Yelp
The coffee was delicious! My mother's breakfast melt was better than my lox plate. I would have liked a bagel from a local, hawaiian bakery instead of a Kirkland (CostCo) everything bagel. The space is very live and loud with patrons crowded inside the shoppe along with coffee machines and blenders.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with delicious food and bev! We got a bit of everything to eat and not a single thing disappointed. The breakfast wrap? Phenomenal. Smoothies? Perfect taste and texture. The oatmeal? Even my picky daughter approved. The coffee was smooth and balanced. Already planning our next visit. Inside seating is limited but there is plenty out on the patio. From ordering to eating was only a few minutes. The employees were so kind and helpful. Don't miss out on this lovely local joint!

Yelp
Friendly atmosphere and helpful staff, topped off with delicious, yet smooth coffee. So glad I came across this place in reviews. I've gotten the French press both times now and man is it some next level coffee. Good tasting all the way through, even tho I'm a very slow drinker. Love coffee? Check this place out

Yelp
Awesome that we can purchase the historic Kona Coffee premiere whole beans; Sakamoto Farms 12 year, Oak Barrel Aged which are a medium to dark roast. At $75 for 10 oz. bag, it is a luxury. Consider this specialty coffee the "heaven" in the world of coffee extravaganza. Want a special gift for a loved one? Try this. This does sell out frequently; a limited supply. I do love the food here and the service is, awesome. Hey, if you are going to pay $8 for a cup of coffee, it better be a really GREAT CUP of coffee, Waimea Coffee Company delivers. Unlike other competitors that still charge $8 and you get an inexperienced barista, and disappointment. Try Waimea Coffee Company where friends gather, locals hang out and everyone waits; but it's worth it. Try it, you'll like it. Best coffee in town if not island-wide.

Yelp
They have off menu special, flavored lattes. I recommend them, especially the one with dark chocolate and coconut. They've also got good desserts. They have a good breakfast and lunch menu as well and sell all sorts of other goodies like mugs and coffee. It's a cute shop I recommended

Yelp
Beautiful Hawaii in the highlands of the countryside. Waimea Coffee shop is a great little spot to stop and get coffee and breakfast or lunch. The country shops has that Key West meets SoCal vibe. Nice, laid back and chill. The have live music on the weekends, and the coffee and Burrito Melt was excellent. Don't get sticker-shock, but everything on the big island is Expensive....bring your wallet and get ready to spend. Even gas an extra dollar at $5.00/gal.

Yelp

Please join me/my friends here from 9-12 pm today to enjoy your favorite coffee/smoothies and lunch salads/sandwiches. The service quick/fast. So come today Aloha

Yelp
This was amazing coffee! Loved the atmosphere too! My husband also had coconut latte and my sister a caramel latte we were all pleased.

Yelp
Live music, great coffee and delicious food. What more could you ask for? Nestled in a cute shopping center in Waimea, this place hit the spot. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and the menu was extensive and customizable. A decaf coconut mocha? No problem. Be sure to try the variety of banana bread as well.

Yelp
So cute, so quaint and it feels like a secret that only you and a handful of people know when you're inside. The staff is friendly, the coffee is phenomenal and you can't miss the breakfast burritos!
google avatar

Yelp
Drove all the way to Waimea from Kona just to see the beautiful farm and have breakfast here. The food and coffee was amazing had the breakfast melt and Chai latte. They were fantastic. Cute little cafe in an adorable town.

Yelp
Made a stop here on our way from Hilo to Kona. This little mountain town is so charming! The coffee shop is nestled into a courtyard with perfect picnicking grass, bring a blanket to sit on while you eat (although you may have to fend off the chickens like we did , but they were harmless) the coffee is delicious, the smoothie was a huge portion, and the bagels were top notch. The vegetables and avocado were generous portions and sooo fresh. Would definitely come back here to enjoy. The servers were friendly and brought our food right out to our picnic set up!
google avatar

Leela A.

Yelp
I love the chocolate peanut butter smoothie with a shot of espresso added! Prices are a bit high, but that's how it goes at all Waimea cafes
google avatar

Trisha H.

Yelp
This not so little coffee shop is so beautiful! The natural wood and island feel isn't touristy at all but captures the beauty of Waimea's cool weather and beautiful landscape. We stopped in for cold brews and a bowl before the beach. The "açaí" bowl is AMAZING! It has a guava base with delicious granola, fresh fruit, coconut shavings and THE best local honey drizzled on top. The employees are super friendly and patient (as I'm sure lots of tourists stop in) and even gave my son EXTRA whipped cream on his hot chocolate. We stopped in again before camping at Spencer and will likely stop again after we leave!

Yelp
Waimea. The best coffee, breakfast, baked goods and ambience. Laid back, great customer service. Not too much seating, but go outside and find a seat or table or picnic bench. Our first stop in Waimea. Try Super Dank variety bean or their Chai Tea. Great merch too. moderately priced Trucker caps, quality mugs and t-shirts too. Make it your first stop in Waimea. Located next-door to Longs Drugs.

Yelp
This used to be the go to place in high school back in the 2017 era (iconic). It was a staple kick it spot. The iced dirty chais were iconic. The space was always warm and welcoming. Fast forward to 2023 and I'm visiting my hometown from Seattle. First stop before the house, poke bowl and Waimea Coffee Co. The layout is a little bit different, but same nostalgic vibe comes through. The crowd was truthfully bittersweet. I'm happy that the cafe has blown up. There were basically no places to sit, so we sat on the lawn. Out of all the time we came, it was packed, even in the middle of the day. The bitter part is to see how many tourists and transplants have taken over my hometown. Just note, if you're looking to visit or move to Hawai'i, do your research and be respectful :) I literally felt like I was back in Seattle lol like how can you still be passive aggressive and ignorant in literal paradise?? Anyways, give this place their flowers. Beautiful cafe with delicious treats and coffee. Drive thru available, seating available, parking lot.

Yelp
Excellent coffee! Açaí bowl was even better. Perfect combination of bananas, blueberries, peanut butter, granola and sorbet with drizzle of honey. I'm going to try and replicate this at home. We even brought home bag of their coffee beans to make at home. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Best place for coffee or light lunches in Waimea... My favorite by far The salads and breakfast items are always so good

Rhonda B.

Yelp
The perfect Acai bowl I have had in a long time! WOW so yummy and just enough of everything in THIS bowl!! Blueberries, bananas, peanut butter, granola, honey.

Yelp
"It's your golden hour You slow down time In your golden hour (Oh-oh-oh)..." Early morning wake-up call courtesy of coqui frogs chirping and roosters crowing is what country living is all about. Waking up in rural Kea'au and on a whim deciding to drive across the Big Island to Kamuela is what my Bestie, Kyra & I, decided to do. We honestly did not want to enjoy our last day on the Island in the rain hopping mud puddles, so we both vibe'd a drive! The drive over was something you don't see on O'ahu or San Francisco lol... we decided on the Saddle Road which is miles and miles of Parker Ranch-land, the cows, rams, horses, and native birds were a joy to see. And when we passed by Mauna Kea, I told Bestie to look at the snow peak, and the joy in her eyes warmed my heart. Who would have thought a 50-mile drive would be so special as Golden Hour by JVKE played... The Sun broke out along the way, but all the time, as enjoyable as the drive was, as hella cute my Bestie glowed, I was jittery and in need of coffee STAT! Lol! And waking up we had no clue where we would get coffee until we approached Kamuela! Serendipity it is! Bestie started Yelping as we approached where Paniolo Cowboy life is alive and well... she tossed out a few names, some mainland chain names meh, and Waimea Coffee Company! We agreed that let's keep it local and we headed directly to Waimea! Waimea Coffee Company is located in a rustic looking outdoor shopping area. Book shops, gift shops, people enjoying the day on the porch or lanai, country and soft rock guitar playing greets us at the doorway. We immediately fell in love with the vibe. Just easy going and no one in a rush. Not much cafe tables, but just enough inside and outside to keep customers happy. Picnic benches on the grass area with roosters! The menu was more than we expected... crafted coffee drinks and teas, baked goods, and even lunch items. We had no desire for lunch as we already had plans lined up for later. I chose Hot Peppermint Mocha and Bestie chose Iced Chai Latte (almond milk), Coconut Loaf, Coconut Macaroon added. Just note to check-in before ordering because there's a Yelp discount if you do! We didn't know until after we ordered the drinks, but Bestie used it for the loaf! :) We managed to find a spot on the communal table which allowed us to really soak up the country ambiance! Ok, ok! Most customers were tourists but hey the Wood don't lie! :D Just a nice spot to collect ourselves after the country drive! Oh my! After my first sip of the Peppermint Mocha I knew it was of high quality - then I read they use Kamuela coffee! Bestie enjoyed her Chai Latté and she was kind enough to share her Coconut Loaf which paired nicely with my drink. The Coconut Macaroon was tasty, but heavy and on the richer side, and probably not the best choice for pre-Brunch, but hey I love my Coconut, so... In the end, we both really enjoyed collecting our thoughts at Waimea Coffee Company. Highly recommended if in the area... top quality drinks, a solid menu, the country vibes was strong here. Not a place to be in a rush, but a spot to take a step back and enjoy the moment. Serendipity was on our side once again... and as JVKE said...You slow down time;)

Yelp
We were on our way to Hilo and stopped for coffee. This is such a cool place right off the main road. Easy going local vibe walking in. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Being a coffee connoisseur, I always love the rich flavor of Kona coffee and this place did not disappoint. The latte was velvety as it should be and rich in flavor. The blueberry muffin was fresh and tasty. We will definitely be stopping here on our way back. Ciao!

Yelp
Inside is tiny and has a hole in the wall local mountain coffee shop vibe. Food and drink came out fairly quick--not a long wait. Total for coffee (+extra charge for oatmilk) + burrito (extra charge for avocado) = $27. Kinda pricey but burrito was good. The southwest chicken burrito melt: it's a chunky burrito that made me gordo.. Added avocado for extra charge, but the creamy avocado and flavorful cheesy corn bean salsa meshed well with the lime juice, the sweet BBQ sauce, and the ranch like dip. Must get. Love it. Maybe my tastebuds were dancing because my stomach was empty. I left feeling content. Vanilla latte with oatmilk: Can get any flavor (ie hazelnut, local honey, etc) but was recommended to get vanilla. Got it. Coffee could have been brewed stronger and was a little too watery. Need to change the type of oatmilk they use: Saw the barrista using the Costco oatmilk and that's a bit too watery. They should maybe try oatly or any oatmilk that's creamier. Side note, The heart was pretty. :)

Yelp
Adorable little hole-in-the-wall coffee spot tucked away in a little boutique shopping area on the main drag into town from the beach. She loved the iced FrankenMatcha and the hot chocolate was solid as well. The atmosphere makes this feel like a "true" quirky coffee joint and the staff rounds out the experience--super nice and friendly. Thank you

Yelp
Hubby visited several years ago and here we are. He had his usual mocha and I had a chai with almond milk. He loves his mocha and describes it as smooth while my chai is lacking any taste of chai. Sorry, no taste of any of the usual spices that accompany a chai. It was a lovely day and outside on the walkway was a woman playing guitar. Really relaxing Service is good and everyone looks happy here. The shop is notes on the street sign and tucked down the walkway from the Waimea gift shop Parking is easy in the Long's parking lot. Support the locals!

Yelp
Cute little coffee place that is not a chain! Woot! The iced mocha was very good, and VERY caffeinated. One of the girls working there had clearly had more than her fair share of coffee for the day cause she was running a hundred miles an hour. It was adorkable. Prices were not bad for an iced coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Pricey but great coffee on a pleasant courtyard. Friendly staff, quaint outdoor seating and obvious choice for locals made for a great experience. Lots of choices for non dairy milks and smoothie options. Great for a mid morning pick me up.

Yelp
I heard many-a-great words about Waimea Coffee Co from quite a few friends and local travelers and had to stop by for a visit to experience this spot for myself. I ordered the chai latte with coconut milk along with the special of the day, which was a vegan-friendly taro burger. For starters, the chai latte was, hands down, the BEST chai latte I've ever had. I've visited hundreds of cafes and coffee/tea spots and whatever magic went into the making of my latte caused me to experience pure bliss. I still think about this latte to this day. The taro burger was tasty and fulfilling. The flavor medley of the taro, there fresh greens and vegetables, the fresh bun, and the sauce that married the flavors together made for a tasty experience. The side of tortilla chips was alright; I would've preferred either potato chips or a different side altogether, I enjoyed sitting outside and taking in the relaxed and peaceful ambience. Overall, my favorite cafe experience on the Big Island thus far! I highly recommend this spot to travelers and locals alike looking for a tasty drink and bite!

Yelp
I would recommend to try their specialty coffee. They have store decorated for Halloween. It was cute little coffee shop hidden in the red complex. They have outdoor sitting and you can see chicken roaming too. For the bathroom, you can need the bathroom code for both the genders. So ask prior to going to the bathroom. I ordered lavender coffee and it was good. My only complain it was small cup.
google avatar

Brad K.

Yelp
This is a classic coffee shop! If you are looking for a traditional cappuccino and a great atmosphere this is for you. Very cozy!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service and such a gem! The drinks and food are equally amazing. Live music on the weekends. Expect a line on the weekends for sure... but, definitely worth the wait!
google avatar

Kelley K.

Yelp
Delicious! Absolutely delicious! The best Chai tea latte I have ever had! There are usually long wait times and their prices are high. If you want a great smoothie; tea or coffee this place is your spot! Come, relax & enjoy!

Yelp
Do I drink coffee (anymore)? No. Was I impressed by Waimea Coffee Company? Yes! A small, rustic, and artistically charming coffee shop with a mix of country and coastal life--this is that coffee shop. As a girl living in Oahu, I felt like I was back on the North Shore! In need of a caffeine run to start our day, my bestie Eric R. And I found Waimea Coffee Co. through Yelp! The lengthy food and drink menu, inside seating options, great reviews, and the fact it's a local shop made us want to come and support it! We're so glad we did as we enjoyed our beverages and small bites. I got myself a Small Iced Chai with Almond Milk. They offer organic dairy alternatives (soy, oat, almond, and macadamia) at an additional cost. Drinks come as hot or iced but if you opt for iced it costs $1 more. My chai was good--lightly sweet, with a hint of spice, and semi-milky from the almond milk. I also got a Coconut Loaf to split with my bestie. The loaf reminded me of a dense-pound cake. I didn't get any hint of coconut and it was too sweet for my liking. My bestie got a Small Hot Peppermint Mocha and a Coconut Macaroon. He said his drink was creamy, rich, and had a true peppermint taste--nothing artificial. The macaroon he found to be heavy with coconut flakes and dark chocolate on top. We both enjoyed our drinks and food inside the cafe. I could tell this unassuming country-like cafe was a popular spot as it had a steady flow of customers. As we were waiting, the line to order went fast and our items came out at an efficient speed. I appreciated the Waimea welcome from the baristas who were friendly and provided fun recommendations! She was able to put my drink in a to-go cup and recommended their coffee ice cubes so my drink wouldn't water down. There's a small table inside as well as seating on their lanai outside. The decor was fun, woodsy, and artsy! If you're on the Kona or Waimea side, be sure to support this local coffee shop off Kawaihae Road. Aside from coffees and teas they also serve smoothies, acai bowls, and breakfast and lunch items (bagels, salads, sandwiches, etc.). Parking is free and plentiful around the cafe. Be sure to check in first to get 10% off your entire order! Mahalo Waimea Coffee Company for helping to kick start our excursion!
google avatar

Dolonchapa C.

Yelp
This is my second time here and I don't even live in Hawaii. The first time we came here we had some of their breakfast items as well. I vaguely remember an avocado toast and a bagel sandwich The coffee is amazingly good. Today we took the cappuccino and the Sakamoto pour over. They ask about your likes wrt coffee and suggest (for the estate selections) We took our coffee and sat outside (plenty of seating available) and enjoyed it with some hot malasadas (from an unrelated food truck)
google avatar

Poonam S.

Yelp
The hype is real! I ordered a macchiato and a cappuccino. Macchiato is definitely not for me..lol. it was hella strong and had a little bit of foam but it sure woke me up ! The Cappuccino was really strong as well. I added three packets of sugar and voila, best strong coffee that I was craving for! May be I will try the latte next time.oh and they offer 10% off for a Yelp check in!

Marci B.

Yelp
My family stopped by the Waimea Coffee Co. after watching the sunrise on Mauna Kea. This cozy coffee shop has a good selection of tasty coffees, teas, and smoothies. Plus, it serves Açaí bowls, baked goods, and breakfast sandwiches. The breakfast burrito is a filling great choice.
google avatar

Si J.

Yelp
Every time I go here the food has been tasty and fresh! The service staff are always quite friendly and have helpful attitudes. It's in Waimea so the location is nice! It's great to go here when the weather is good because you can see the p'uu's. If your in town give this small bustling coffee shop a try! You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Josie C.

Yelp
Delicious food, and drinks. I've enjoyed everything I've bought, and the employees are all super nice, also a nice place to study because of the setting. :) Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
Cool vibe with he place having little nods to Star Wars - from the WiFi, name of some of their coffee grounds, and the baby yoda doll. Ordered a latte with macadamia nut milk and it was quite possibly the smoothest latte I have ever ordered. Not sure if that's the milk (I normally go with oat) or the coffee or the combo. Either way, pretty great! Their food menu to me was the real standout. A myriad of options to order from sandwiches, wraps and soup. Definitely come here for breakfast/lunch. The courtyard was a great way to eat/drink and enjoy the Hawaiian sun.
google avatar

Simone A.

Yelp
Great little spot in Waimea! They have the best carrot cake! I enjoyed a cortado. Staff were super friendly and service was great. Little tables outside to enjoy your coffee and get a bite to eat.
google avatar

Classic A.

Yelp
Somehow this busy local place manages to make the best bfast burrito (can be eaten for lunch or dinner also) on the island. Large enough for two!!

Stacy D.

Yelp
Fav- a must- feels like going back in time- friendly staff- cute interior and outside tables, coffee, desserts and food all home made and healthy if you want that. Support local businesses and don't go to Starbucks!
google avatar

Clever G.

Yelp
Staff was rude, disrespectful, drinks were way overpriced $8 for a hot beverage? And they got my order completely wrong after waiting 15 min for it. Like, how do you charge $8 for a basic drink that you get completely wrong. Only reason I went here is because nothing else was open in the afternoon. Do not recommend, go elsewhere!
google avatar

Audra R.

Yelp
Absolutely charming and delicious. Worth the drive considering the waikaloa breakfast choices are either sparse or actually terrible. My husband and I agree the breast burrito was the best we've ever had. (We live in socal) the flavors were incredibly developed and thoughtful. Simple food, small menu but very gourmet. They were busy and service was fast and coffee good. Super pleasant places to chill indoors and out.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Stopped in Waimea for some coffee, I got the iced macadmia nut latte. Perfectly nuttiness, sweetness, creaminess and good size/price too. The cafe had a great food menu and selection of pastries. It's located in an area with a bunch of other shops/boutiques and parking is easy!
google avatar

Gina A.

Yelp
Breakfast burrito is so bomb. My favorite for breakfast or lunch. Dirty chai is also perfection. Great local spot with friendly staff.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
We stopped by here on our way to get breakfast. The coffee and service was great. The location was easy to find and there was ample parking.
google avatar

Roge H.

Yelp
I like the matcha latte, a little bitter for my taste which I really like. My husband liked his chai latte and we both enjoyed their carrot cake. The ambiance was countryside vibe which is perfect for the weather. The lady that helped us wasn't friendly. I hope the manager will train the employees of customer service.
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
Awesome cortado and great Big Island vibe away from the crazies! Really good selection of ground and whole bean Kona coffee. Nice place to hang out too!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop. The barista's are real artist. The coffee drinks they prepare out rank any Starbucks. As a former coffee shop owner and roaster, this shop is one of the best I've ever visited. If you love your joe, this is the place.
