Yelp
We were looking for a condo/resort that had units with full kitchens, but also had amenities like on-site restaurant, exercise room, and resort-style pools. Waipouli was a great option for Kauai, and I think really the only one of its kind.
We are a family of 4, including two girls aged 3 and 6. We stayed for one week at the end of October 2016.
Pools
The pools were really great. Our girls (3 & 6) loved the slides and hot tubs most of all. The pools was always very clean. They had a great sand-bottom play area for little kids, and the availability of both family and adult hot tubs was a nice feature.
They had a pretty easy check-out process for towels at the pool, and the towels were of nice quality.
There are a few little waterfalls on the "lazy river" area of the pools. One has a grotto you can sit in. There's no current to the river portion, so you can't just float around on a tube.
Lots of beach chairs and tables to sit at.
The pools were not well heated, if at all. Not so bad once you get moving, but definitely an initial shock.
Cleanliness
I found that the resort was very well kept up. They cleaned the pools extensively every morning, and power washed the pool deck at least once when we were there.
Rooms
We rented D404 which was awesome. It was almost dead-center of the resort and on the top level. Highly recommend this unit. The woman who manages the unit was very nice to work with.
The unit came with everything we needed, including beach and pool equipment. Would have been nice to have some kid-friendly plates and silverware. We otherwise had pretty much everything we needed for cooking in the unit.
We had a two-bedroom unit. The bathrooms were very nice and one had a shower where you could look out toward the ocean while showering which was really cool.
The lanai off the bedroom was nice-sized and great to watch sunrises from.
Our room was very quiet and dark at night which meant we slept well. Air conditioning worked very well, but often not needed because of the nice breeze most of the day.
Retail
As others have stated, it was great to have a Safeway right across the street. The Starbucks in that center was good, and there was a great little ice cream place as well. The Safeway does have a Redbox for renting movies.
There are a lot of really good little restaurants nearby. Highly recommend Kauai Pasta, Java Kai (great coffee and pastries), and Verde.
Weather
Even though the weather report shows rain every day, we only really got rained on one of our seven days there. It can be windy there, but we never really found it as an inconvenience. It was sometimes nice to take some of the heat off.
You don't get sunsets on the east side of Kauai, but you get great sunrises.
On-Site
We rented our unit via VRBO, although you can rent via Outrigger, the hotel owner. There is not much of a "front desk" area. It seems like you're mostly on your own. There was a check-in area for Outrigger guests, and I think a separate one for renters, but we did not check it out.
The exercise room was nice. A couple of treadmills, a bike, and a couple of ellipticals, plus weight equipment. They had towels and water available in the room, as well as two TVs for watching on the treadmills.
There is a great running/biking/walking trail that you pick up a few blocks north of the resort. It goes out about 4 miles all the way up to Donkey Beach. It's paved and wide the whole time. Really nice. Beautiful coast views and lots of places to stop along the way.
Restaurant
The Oasis is well situated right at the beachfront. We enjoyed the food, both breakfast and lunch. They had a limited, but tasty menu for the kids. I was a little underwhelmed by the mixed drinks. A bit pricey for what you get, but it's nice to have the option on the resort. There is not true poolside service from the restaurant. You can order and they'll walk it over to the gate, but they don't have the code to get in so you have to go pick it up. Minor inconvenience. Food and drink are allowed poolside.
Beach
We never went to the beach at the resort. Shoreline is pretty steep and the waves are pretty rough. Plus there's a coral bottom, so it's not great for swimming. However, within a short drive there are lots of great beaches so it wasn't a concern.
Property
In terms of general upkeep, the whole resort was nice. At the time, they were removing some damaged stucco on the units and repainting. We weren't in a unit getting repaired, so it didn't impact us. Can imagine it would have been inconvenient if done to our unit or nearby.
It's situated very close to the airport, and really well located for day trips around the island.
Overall highly recommend this resort when staying on Kauai, particularly with families.
