The 16 Best Hotels in Scotland

"Expect nothing but grandeur from “The Caley” (which remains The Caley, no matter what the ownership), one of Edinburgh’s two majestic old railway spots (the other being Rocco Forte’s Balmoral). The sheer scale of the property is impressive, as are the unbeatable views and excellent location. There’s an array of room categories, from a single-bed eyrie with castle views to a range of suites, all different in dimensions and decor, but all classic-contemporary in style. The rooms on the Lothian Road side have the money view of the smoldering black outline of the Castle on its rock." - Steve King

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian

"Start us off with the big picture. What's this place like? How does it strike you on arrival? The old bones of this early-1900s railway station on Princes Street have been beautifully resorted: The sandstone Victorian exterior makes the hotel look part embassy, part tourist attraction in its own right. You enter through a revolving door where a charming kilted doorman greets you with a smile, takes your bags, and shows you into the bright, surprisingly serene (for a city hotel) marble lobby. How did the Caledonian come to be? Princes Street Station and its hotel have been around since the turn of the 20th century, within sight of the Edinburgh Castle, looming above on the hill. Though the station itself was torn down in the late 1960s, the Caledonian hotel remained, and has been under Waldorf Astoria's ownership since 2012. The Waldorf Astoria's adoption has been good for the beloved "Caley," with the hallmarks of the brand—the Guerlain Spa, Peacock Alley (created here from the station concourse) adding reliable luxury. Take us up to the rooms—what can we expect? The 241 rooms have been updated in sleek and smoky blues and grays, and many—rooms and suites alike—come with castle views. But you could also draw the blackout curtains on these extra-high windows, settle into the gloriously comfy bed with Egyptian cotton linens, and not hear a soul as you sleep off the jet lag. It's astounding, how quiet and serene the rooms are; opt for a queen or king suite for a separate living room (good for families traveling who want to stash a crib somewhere) and those high, high ceilings. Sounds relaxing. Once we've settled in, we're likely to want a bit of a pick-me-up—what are our options on site? Head immediately to Peacock Alley, a Waldorf trademark that serves as a combination bar, lounge, dining room, and way station just off the lobby, where you'll find suits having power lunches and travelers kicked back in oversized armchairs enjoying a dram of whisky or tea at (almost) all hours. We enjoyed breakfast in Peacock Alley, sitting by the piano or beneath the historic Caledonian station clock, but you can also dine in the attached Galvin Brasserie de Luxe, a chic French bistro with ceramic tiles and the same breakfast spread (also open to the public for lunch and dinner with a menu by the Michelin-starred Galvin brothers). The Pompadour sounds like its name—high class, much ado about dinner—with an eight-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons; it's also the winner of Scottish Hotel Awards 2019's Fine Dining Restaurant Hotel of the Year. How's the service? It's why you're here—it's fantastic. The bar's already high, since Scottish hospitality is the among the friendliest out there, but it also has the Waldorf Astoria touch. To wit: If you travel with a toddler, they may put a teddy bear in your room. It sounds like we'll have little reason to want to leave the hotel, but we are in Edinburgh—so how does the Caledonian fit into the surrounding neighborhood? One of the greatest perks of staying at the Caley is its location: You're within sight of the Edinburgh Castle (though downhill of it—it takes a somewhat steep walk or a very short cab ride to get there). Princes Street Gardens is across the way, which means you can stroll through it one day, then head uphill and walk the Royal Mile, one of Old Town's hallmarks, the next day. Super convenient. Okay, and any other little details that helped make your stay all the more comfortable? Wi-Fi in the lobby, Peacock Alley, and rooms was speedy (hence all the business travelers here); the bathrobes were the kind you wanted to sleep in; Salvatore Ferragamo products lined the shower shelves; and in-room Nespresso and shortbread helped to ward off the winter chill. And the Guerlain Spa is among the best in the U.K. Got it. So when you get down to it, what makes this hotel so special? The staff makes you feel completely welcome, no matter how bedraggled you may look: like you're coming home when you roll in from a soggy Edinburgh day, laden with bags, worn out from touristing, and just want to settle into a settee in Peacock Alley with a hot tea and stay awhile." - Laura Dannen Redman

We stayed at The Caledonian for a family trip to Edinburgh and absolutely loved it. The hotel is beautiful – full of character and elegance – and everything from the rooms to the spa felt really high quality.||The food was amazing, and the service throughout our stay was top-notch. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and made us feel really welcome as a family. Nothing was ever too much trouble.||It was definitely worth staying here – a great base for exploring the city, and a really special place to come back to at the end of the day. We made some lovely memories and would definitely, definitely return. Highly recommend!

I recently stayed at the Caledonian hotel, and it was an unforgettable experience. The hotel, housed in a stunning former Victorian railway station, combines historic charm with modern luxury, and its location on Princes Street offers breathtaking views of Edinburgh Castle. My room was spacious, comfortable, and impeccably clean, with a cozy bed and lovely touches like plush robes and luxury toiletries. The dining experiences were amazing, especially at Dean Banks at The Pompadour, where the creative, locally sourced dishes were simply outstanding. Peacock Alley provided a relaxed atmosphere for coffee or afternoon tea, and the service throughout the hotel was impeccable. The hotel is also incredibly accessible, with lifts and friendly, attentive staff always ready to assist. Whether you’re in Edinburgh for sightseeing or a special occasion, The Caledonian offers a perfect mix of elegance, comfort, and convenience. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in the city!

This is a historic hotel with a delightful history and old world charm and superb staff. They perform their duties with a touch of class that is hard to come by these days.||From the minute we arrived, the concierges were always available and provided assistance without my having to explicitly ask. They just appear at the right moments, render a service and subtly depart. This included fetching luggage to the room, hailing taxis, and loading our luggage for departure. This service was quite simply the highlight of our stay.||They blend this classic hospitality with modern tech. Their pre-checkin text message (SMS) includes access to an assistant who can answer questions. In our case they provided helpful information on how to park and return rental cars.||It is not your generic hotel-in-a-box. The bar and restaurant are thoroughly modern, but retain the Victorian aesthetic of the original building. The staff at the restaurant were helpful and attentive, although they didn't possess the elegance and excellence of the front desk and concierges. We only ate the buffet breakfast, so I cannot comment about the quality of food.||The rooms felt palatial, with their large windows and stunning 15-foot ceiling. The beds and pillows were comfortable, and the air conditioning worked fabulously, giving us multiple good nights of sleep. Some aspects of the room reveal their age (120+ years), but I found that charming. The bathtub felt a little cramped to take a shower, but that's about the only thing I can fault.||I enjoyed taking the grand staircase up to our fourth floor room. Sunlight streams in through stained glass reclaimed from the decommissioned Victorian railway station below. The many drawings hanging on the hallway walls are beautiful.||Overall, this hotel was a highlight of our trip to Edinburgh.

I stayed at the Caledonian expecting a luxurious experience, given the nearly $600/night price tag and the hotel’s reputation. While the service from staff across the board—front desk, bell hop, bartenders, breakfast servers, concierge—was warm and professional, I was ultimately very disappointed by my stay.||When I arrived, I was shocked to find a major construction project happening directly outside my window. I understand that construction is sometimes unavoidable, but this was a large-scale, extremely loud project, and I was given no notice in advance. Had I known, I might have chosen to stay elsewhere. The hotel was unable to move my room, which I understand if they were full, but it took significant pushing on my part to receive any compensation at all. First, they offered a comped breakfast, then after another complaint, a £50 hotel credit. These gestures were polite, but inadequate given that I couldn’t nap or rest in my room due to constant construction noise. It was so invasive I felt like the workers could see directly into my room from their cranes. I ended up keeping the blinds closed, which meant no natural light—hardly what you expect at this price point.||They did offer earplugs and noise-canceling headphones, which was a thoughtful gesture, but again, not a real solution for a guest who paid a premium to relax and sleep. To make matters worse, I requested that my bar charges be removed as a courtesy (something they initially agreed to), but I was charged anyway.||For a hotel of this caliber, the lack of proactive communication about the construction and the minimal efforts to make it right left me feeling deeply let down. The service was kind, but ultimately I did not receive the value or comfort I was promised. At this level, a beautiful lobby and nice staff aren't enough—your room should be a sanctuary, not a construction zone.

What a fantastic location perfect to let you explore the city. It’s a short walk to the Castle and the shops and not too far from Waverley station. Staff were warm, professional, and attentive throughout. Check-in was quick and smooth. The room was well equipped, with tea and coffee making facilities. The pool looked lovely, though I didn’t get to try the spa this time!

Beautiful hotel we were met by the doorman who took our luggage escorted us to reception to check in what a luxury experience the front desk staff had upgraded us which we did not expect such a surprise. We were shown to the lifts then went up to our room 304 it was stunning large room with huge windows with a beautiful view of the castle. The staff were so welcoming at front desk. The bed was so luxurious and very comfortable slept very well ||We had breakfast in the morning what a selection to choose from we were certainly not disappointed at all just sad that we only had a one night stay we will return for longer. Planning our next trip.” The team here make the experience all staff we met were extremely nice and looked after us.

I have been to the restaurant and the spa at this hotel and have had a wonderful experience at both! The food at the restaurant was well cooked and flavourful. I also had a beautiful cocktail which was tasty! I also had a wonderful experience at the spa. The facilities are clean and the staff are lovely. Special mention to the receptionist Jessica who helped me at the spa and recommended The Court to me :)
