Terribly disappointed. To begin with, Walhalla is one of the most beautiful places in Victoria. Walhalla's Star Hotel is overrated. Reading the 5 star reviews in bewildering. When we arrived, we felt that we were intruding. There was no warm welcome whatsoever. Infact there was little conversation at all. The rehearsed monologue when we were shown to our room was pitiful. The room was sparse and stuffy. The bathroom was dated with a shower curtain that was too long. Having a shower felt as though your were being subjected to a hail of bullets due to the shower head. Dinner was bland and served up with contempt. There was no dress code for the waiters. They couldn't have cared less about presentation. Breakfast was a basic continental which included stale croissants and coffee which was lukewarm. I could go on but this establishment has taken up enough of my time. Be aware that whilst dinner and breakfast is included in the tariff, it is below par. We will return to Walhalla but not to this Hotel! In summary, the impression we got with this Hotel is "take it or leave it." Never again!

We had a wonderful stay at the Star Hotel. Firstly, Walhalla is such an interesting and unique place to visit. There are lots of beautiful walks all around the town and the town itself is lovely to explore. The Star Hotel is a quirky and warm place to stay. The rooms are great, extremely clean and comfortable. Dinner was so delicious and the continental breakfast was generous too. We really loved our stay at the Star Hotel - highly recommend.

It was nothing short of impressive!

We recently enjoyed a delightful stay for my dad's birthday, and I can confidently say that the experience and accommodations exceeded any 5-star rating I could give. We reserved two rooms, and the owners made sure that all the amenities were conveniently located to cater to my parents' needs as they are no longer spry youngsters. Michael and Russell, the owners, are incredibly welcoming and always eager to chat. They even went above and beyond by bringing out our dessert with a candle to make my dad feel extra special on his special day. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for these wonderful hosts, as they strive to ensure your stay aligns perfectly with your expectations—a rarity in today’s hospitality industry . The atmosphere of this place is wonderfully cozy, instantly making you feel at home. Our rooms were inviting, complete with comfortable beds and fresh linens. The view from the balcony was simply stunning, offering a panoramic view of Main Street along with its historic structures and beautiful natural surroundings. Dinner was scrumptious, and the breakfast spread in the morning was impressive, featuring a wide variety of delectable options to satisfy any palate. An added treat was the charming and playful dogs, Tilly and Rupert, who brought an extra layer of joy to our stay. On top of all this fantastic service and accommodation, the price was incredibly reasonable. As always, our experience was exceptional, and we look forward to returning for another visit. I wholeheartedly recommend this outstanding establishment to anyone looking for a memorable stay.

Fabulous place to stay. Michael has done such an impressive job of rebuilding this iconic hotel and lovingly tending to it and being a great hotelier for 27 years - long may this continue, as our hotel experience was such a central and integral part of why we enjoyed Walhalla so much. But also, Walhalla itself is so unique and totally worth visiting and staying, not just day tripping. |Our room was fab, the balcony view was great, cosy reception areas downstairs and breakfast and dinner. The dinners were of such excellent quality - one night had the duck, which I thought couldn't be improved upon, but the next night I had what was probably the best Lamb Shank ever!|We really enjoyed our two night visit. This meant we had time to enjoy the hotel and also a clear whole day to wander around the town, do the goldmine and railway line tours. Thoroughly recommend.

We try and visit Walhalla annually, but we missed last year. We again stayed at the Star Hotel with five friends. The experience was excellent at every level. Michael and Russell are to be commended for looking after us so well.|The arrangements to feed our group on the Friday night were innovative, and Saturday's evening meal was to its usual high standard.|Thank you.

We stayed last weekend and could not fault the service or the knowledge of the owners, nothing was to hard. Money better spent supporting rural Victoria than large multi nationals in Melbourne city. Will be going back in Winter. Cheers

The hotel room was bright spacious clean and comfortable. The dinner and continental breakfast were good. My only slight negative was, whilst the hotel reception, lounge and restaurant had some character, the room felt a little clinical and lacked ambiance. But view from balcony of the village was great. ||The village is set in a lovely wooded valley. We wish we had stayed two nights and taken the train ride (closed Thurs when we were there) and done the gold mine tour (pm only). But we walked around the village in the cool and quiet of the morning, very interesting. ||Thank you for your recommendation of Toorongo waterfall, Red Duck Cafe Noojee & Noojee Trestle bridge on route to our next stay. All were worth a visit.

Yelp
We stayed in Mar 2023. We were the only guests in this historic gold mining town. The hotel, despite being a rebuild, is reminiscent of an historic era but with modern conveniences. We were off season so much of the town was closed. However, we received lots of good advice from the proprietor and enjoyed following up on his suggestions of things we might want to see and do. The walk up to the cemetery was fun, the steps to the mine and views from there was worth the effort. Food and facilities are wonderful... A good reason they have received multiple awards. Thanks for making our stay spectacular.

Yelp
Before I talk about the lovely hotel, this review will only be complete with a little history and background of this gem of a town. Walhalla is a historical town filed with rich heritage of the glory days as a mining town. As with most mining towns, Walhalla was a flourishing town that survived on gold mining until the mines will closed in 1914. With the closure of the mines, the town slowly lost its buzz until recent years when the town was recreated with much care and accuracy to restore iconic buildings and historical spaces to reflect the heritage. The Walhalla's Star Hotel is one such building that was rebuilt after being burnt down by a fire many years ago. While the exterior reflects the past, the interior is no lack of the modern! Spacious rooms and well-equipped with the necessary amenities, you are greeted warmly by the proprietor and owner, Michael. As we were there during winter, having electric blankets was a luxury that we were grateful to have. The largest hospitality space at Walhalla, one will be fortunate to enjoy the charming town staying over in this 24-room hotel. To make the experience even more exciting, visit during the month of August each year and you'll be treated with a visual feast by the Walhalla Vinter Ljustfest. The usually pitch black town once the sun sets turns into a pretty little lighted town decorated to a special theme each year. A popular weekend getaway at 3hrs drive away from Melbourne city, do book your weekend getaway easily as they run out of rooms over the weekends or during special events very quickly. With only 16 permanent residents, this charming town prides in their key highlights such as the Extended Tunnel Mine tours as well as the Walhalla Goldfield Railways. Enjoy your stay in the Walhalla Star Hotel as they will welcome you with open arms. :)
