The 6 Best Tour Companies in Italy (Updated 2025)

"When I want something more in-depth than a free tour, this is my favorite walking tour company in Italy: they’re one of the largest day-tour operators, run tours in eight cities, and get access to places other companies don’t, including before- or after-hours visits such as an early-access tour of the Sistine Chapel and a Colosseum at Night experience. Their guides are true experts, most tours last around four hours, and prices start at about 40 EUR per person." - Matthew Kepnes

My husband and I booked the Complete Vatican Tour to celebrate my birthday while our Mediterranean cruise was docked in Civitavecchia (Rome). This was a bucket list tour for us, as we were able to see the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica in a few short hours. Beautiful artwork surrounds you throughout the entire tour- we just kept saying “wow” as we went down a new hallway or turned a new corner! We were able to walk through the Holy Doors for the 2025 Jubilee (however this is not a guaranteed part of the tour). There is a “short cut” passageway only accessible to certain tour groups that leads directly from the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica. It is not always open and is not a guarantee, but it was a welcomed time-saver, as lines were long in July and we had a lot we wanted to see in the short period of time we were in port. Vita was our tour guide and she was extremely knowledgeable! She pointed out minuet details in the artwork that I would have never noticed. I recommend this tour to anyone prioritizing the Vatican City during your time in Rome!

We booked two tours with Walks of Italy for our recent Rome trip, the Gladiators Gate tour (with Sev) and the Pristine Sistine Early Start (with Julia). Both tours were absolutely incredible. The knowledge Sev and Julia had, using every moment of the tours to share the history of Rome even waiting in line to enter the Vatican or walking from the meeting place to the destination. We were some of the first people to enter the Vatican Museums and got to experience such beautiful art without being squished in with hundreds of others. Despite it being the Jubilee we really didn't feel like we were ever waiting in any lines or feeling crowded. We will definitely be using Walks for any future tours!

My family and I went on the Pristine Sistine walking tour of the Vatican/Sistine Chapel/St. Peter's Basilica on 7/25/25. We had such an incredible experience! Our tour guide, Jeb, was a highlight himself. He was fun, knowledgeable, and made our tour engaging the entire time. We're very happy to have had him guide us through these amazing sites. 100/10 would recommend!

Rome in a Day Tour (including Vatican, Colosseum & Historic Centre) is a MUST no matter how long you plan to spend in Rome. The tour covers all highlights of Rome including the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. There is no way you could do all of the places on your own using Google Maps. The tour guide knows his way around and also we ‘skipped the line’ in a number of places because we were a tour group. Our tour guide Nicola (Nick) was amazing. He was so a pleasure to listen to as he was very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Rome.

Great guide, but poor coordination from HQ. The company didn’t have accurate info on site access—like mistakenly saying Saint Peter’s Basilica was closed to guides when it wasn’t. That mistake cut our premium 4-hour tour down to 3 and excluded a major highlight, with no discount I might add. For the high price, you'd expect better planning and communication. After the tour we emailed and I even sent them photos showing other guides inside the Basilica, but after that, they stopped responding. Bottom line: if both expensive and budget tours come with headaches, you might as well save your money and go with someone else.

A fantastic experience and a great group to hang with for three hours while uncovering the incredible history of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum—and so much more in between. Our guide, Stefano, was outstanding—generous with both his time and knowledge, going well beyond what I’d expected. Honestly, it’s probably the best history lesson I’ll ever have. I’d highly recommend the tour, and if you’re lucky enough to get Stefano, well, that’s an added bonus. Chris More at Insta: @chrisohsyd

Absolutely the only way to see the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. Nicco was a great guide with a lot of knowledge and a dry sense of humor that kept us entertained. While the late afternoon tour felt "crowded" compared to the actual crowds at the height of the day, the rooms were easy to maneuver. There was no wait in line to get in, which was so nice given the extreme heat. These early morning or late afternoon tours are the only way to go!

Francesca D. is phenomenal! We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of the colosseum and Roman Forum with her. She was engaging and knowledgeable. The audio equipment was also great and we never missed a beat.
