"Best Fondue and Unique Starters in Basel" We had such a wonderful evening here. The "Duo of Foie Gras" (hot and cold) was a standout dish that I haven't seen done this well elsewhere. The cheese fondue was, as always, rich and perfectly prepared. I also love that they stay open late, so you never have to rush. The atmosphere is cozy, and the wait staff is always charming and attentive. A must-visit in Basel!

The high-quality wines and the very delicious fondue create a perfect combination for an unforgettable gastronomic experience.

The food was lovely and delicious. Dinging a star for them not serving tap water. (Feels like an unnecessary money grab.) The venison was perfect for a chilly, rainy fall day. A very generous portion of everything, and beautiful plating.

In the bustling walking streets of old town Basel there’s a dizzying array of dining options. We chose this for its traditional Swiss cuisine. We had the schnitzel with pork instead of veal with noodles and the perch with boiled potatoes. The side salad was extra. Add a beer and the total was easily over a 100 CHF. Our server was friendly with a gentleman’s sense of humor. This is a good place for outdoor dining and people watching. Food is good.

I was recommended to visit this restaurant for traditional Swiss cuisine by a few locals. My friend and I came here for lunch. The place is located in the heart of Basel, right on one of the main promenades, so it was quite busy that day, mostly with tourists. The restaurant has a big indoor area, plus outdoor seating. We decided to sit inside to enjoy its classic Swiss design and cozy vibe. You can sense the historic charm in the atmosphere, but everything inside was still well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our waiter was very nice and helpful – he gave us tips about Swiss food and recommended a couple of dishes from the menu. The menu,by the way, wasn’t very big, and it focused on traditional Swiss classics. We decided to share two dishes: Wienerschnitzel and Cheese Fondue (Käsefondue). The food came out quickly, within about 15 minutes. The pork schnitzel was flavorful and tender, with a perfectly enjoyable texture. We chose French fries as the side, and they were cooked really well. But the star of our lunch was definitely the Cheese Fondue – absolutely delicious! The cheese they used was incredibly rich and flavorful, and the fresh bread served with it was also tasty. Dipping the bread into the melted cheese made it a truly delightful experience. Both dishes were generous in size and more than enough for two people. The only negative about this restaurant is the prices, which are extremely high. The Cheese Fondue cost 38 CHF (about $48) PER PERSON, and the Wienerschnitzel was 40 CHF (about $50). Even though the food was excellent, I found these prices far too steep. The soft drinks we ordered were also expensive – 6 CHF ($8) for a cup of black tea or a Diet Coke. I’m from Miami, where restaurants are pricey too, but not this expensive, so even I was shocked when we got the final bill. Finalizing my review, I can say that I loved every part of my experience at the restaurant except the prices. It’s definitely not a place I could afford to eat at every day (like I do in many restaurants in Miami, since I don’t cook), but I still recommend checking this restaurant at least once for the experience – to try truly delicious Swiss food. Trust me and order the Cheese Fondue for sure!

Terrible cheese fondue — don’t waste your money I’m writing with great disappointment. The cheese fondue we ordered was the worst we’ve ever had — after only two forkfuls we had to stop. I can’t imagine a restaurant serving a dish like that, and their defense when we complained was even worse. And what’s even worse? They charged us the full price without any hesitation… I’ve included the bill below for reference. Think carefully before you go.

We wanted to experience Swiss fondue. We were not disappointed. Had the original Wiener schnitzel and cheese fondue (ordered just for 2 people even as a party of 4 - it was plenty of food). The waiter picked the wine, Swiss of course, and it was awesome, as was the waiter!! Chocolates come with your check. They have bar seating (great for just stopping to have a drink) and offer outdoor dining.

Fantastic food and fantastic service, even with a party of 13! Definitely will be back the next time we make it to Basel!

There is a fair amount to like about Walliser Kanne. It is centrally located in the historic part of Basel, it has a large menu featuring a number of Swiss dishes, and you have the choice of pleasant outdoor dining as pedestrians walk by or a handsome old world interior. While the service is not the speediest, it is precise and impeccably polite. As for the food? It is OK. If you are into heavier food offerings, you could definitely do worse. I'd say this is a really good spot for fondue, if that's your thing. They also have a large number of wine offerings and a full bar, although a disappointingly small selection of beers (a bit surprising given one is in the German part of the country). That said, however, there were two related and basic issues. First, the food is traditional--that is, expect no innovation or wild flavor palates here. It will be hearty and fairly bland. Again, if that is your thing, go for it. For me, however, the flavors were just a bit too coarse and pedestrian. Second, what you pay for what you get is on the extremely steep side. Switzerland and Basel in particular are pricey, but this was at another level. My (single) pork sausage with onion dressing and rösti ran SFr 36 (about US $42/€38) was pretty steep, and it was one of the least expensive things on the menu. Expect to pay SFr 45-55 for most dishes. Let me add that I did have a pleasant time at WK. I was in Basel on business, so I didn't much worry if I was paying a little more than I normally would at home. But put bluntly, the cost-to-food-satisfaction ratio was poor. There are many more places, even in this part of town, that are equally good and far less costly.

If you're coming to Basel, you must stop at Walliser Kanne. Two floors of dining, with elegant table settings, and good food. There's lots of nice brown woodwork in here, and it can get loud, but feels very professional. They start you out with a bread basket and butter. The bread with the hard crust was just perfect. We had the cheese fondue, which was a hit too strong for me with the wine taste, but others enjoyed it. The bread for it was a bit too airy. We also enjoyed the baby chicken with fries which is served as two 1/2 plates. The chicken was cooked perfectly in lots of butter. The fries were a bit dry but still delicious with ketchup. For dessert we had the chocolate mouse which was a nice light tasting treat. However, the apple tart, homemade, was the star of the show. Three tarts, almost like donuts filled with apple, were so tasty. The service was very professional here, they treat you right.

The service and ambiance here are fantastic. So too is the food. It's pricey but worth it. I had a green salad which was delicious and the veal schnitzel with noodles, which was also phenomenal. The service was top notch and brought me everything I needed. For dessert I had the homemade caramel pudding which was also very good. If you want very good food, then this is the place.

Great cheese fondue - but super expensive and only comes with bread. Fun for a one time touristy experience but I am not sure I would come back unless you LOVE cheese

I ate here with my boss on a Friday evening. He was craving some Swiss fondue and we found the place walking through the Basel City Center. There is indoor and outdoor seating here. We chose to eat outside. There were a few interesting options on the menu. I had a hard time deciding on whether to order the pork schnitzel or the entrecote steak. I was hoping for a combo platter where I could also get fondue with my entrée but I did not see that option available. We ordered a few beers while deciding on the menu. My boss loved the fondue. He was served a plate a cubed bread to dip in the fondue bowl. He let me try it and it tasted good. My steak was a disappointment. I was expecting a ribeye and was served a sirloin. The portion size was also smaller than expected. The flavor was ok but I sure would have liked some fondue to dip my steak pieces in. The service was friendly although it did take a long time to receive the food. This place is also priced high. Three stars.

Solid experience, but just like everything else in Basel it was expensive. My SO and I shared a veal schnitzel with potato. We also had escargot and shared a Caesar salad. I had a glass of wine and my husband had a beer. All in it was 125 francs. Restaurant was charming and the service was good. Everyone was getting the fondu, next time maybe. Anyway solid place to try Swiss food.

Total tourist trap. 5 star for food. We got the truffle fondue, champagne fondue, and fried pork chop that they are known for. -2 star for awful customer service. The waitress we got was anything but gentle, and patient. The service felt very abrasive as she was very loud and seemed impatient with our questions. We were made to believe we each had to get our own fondue and couldn't share one fondue ($50 a person for fondue). -2 We felt very much discriminated as two minority Asian American women. We requested patio seating, they said they were closing the patio because it would rain soon ( it never rained ). So we requested downstairs seating they said it was reserved for rsvp. We went upstairs and requested the table wide open by the window, but the waitress said it was for a party of 4. Soon after they seated us in the most awkward of all tables while two white men sat down at that table by the window . Also, our fried pork chop was not cook out in the open like everyone else's - instead our fried pork came out from the back kitchen. We paid the price of royalties but certainly felt like second class citizens at this restaurant. ($200 two fondue, 1 fried pork, and two glasses of wine) At the very end the big tall abrasive German waitress was towering over us and had the audacity to ask for a tip - and being the stereotypical nice Asian American ladies we are - I obliged to 10%, and now using Yelp as an outlet to voice my frustration and dissatisfaction..... I am glad I got fondue checked off my list but the treatment of minorities is very backyards and I would not recommend this restaurant if you are not traveling with a white male.

It was out last night in Basel, and really the only evening my wife and I had to dine out as she was there for work. For our last Swiss experience, we decided to go here. it was a short ride on the #8 rail from Banhoff towards Markplatz. Everything is super expensive i'm Basel so we split everything. We were seated outside, which was really nice. The evening weather was perfect. I wanted to order fondue but the item to order was the schnitzel. We split a huge salad, which came with bread. Our schnitzel came in and it was huge. it came with a side of spaetzel. everything was cooked to perfection. we downed some beers to compete the experience.

Great service. Schnitzel is presented to the diner and then prepared in the dining room. The schnitzel is very good. Spatzel is also prepared in the dining room. It's also very good. Atmosphere is upscale and oriented for tourists - menu is available in several languages. They have fondue on the menu year-round.

Dinner after the Basel Christmas Market was a phenomenal way to end the day Fried Perch with tartar sauce for Mom. Came with a potato rösti ( kind of like a potato pancake ). She loved it Mr & I shared the Classic & Mushroom Fondues & they were both amazing! Lots of stringy cheesy pulls and the cheese was the dominant flavor instead of alcohol Champagne to start & their local white ( Traminer ) to enjoy with the fondue Super nice staff - spoke at least 5 languages. Fabulous Schnitzels! Classic Swiss German food (including fondu) with English speaking friendly service. Nice selections of Swiss and Austrian wines and beers. White asparagus was in season and we had a fabulous asparagus appetizer with ham and new potatoes (perfectly cooked). The salads were fresh as expected and varied. We had the pork and veal Schnitzels which were expertly prepared in Swiss butter with French fries and spatzli. Hearty and delicious dishes. Deserts were ok but the highlight was The Schnitzels! I would (and did) go back for more.

This is in a cute but touristy part of town. Really one of the more interesting areas of Basel. We had the fondue, sitting outside on a lovely July evening. Very cheesy. Lots of wine and good times were had by all.

Had the Wiener schnitzel with roti which was very good. My husband had raclette. He enjoyed it very Much but was hoping the cheese would have been cut in front of him. Place is a little pricey but ok for a couple.

June 2018: This place is definitely well known and has been around a while. Super touisty, but had to dine her on our first trip to Basel. The weathet was perfect and sat outside. We had the cheese fondue. The single serving was enough for 2 people (bread and melted cheese are very filling), $36. We also ordered the Raclette (melted cheese on a plate with a few onions and little pickles on the side), $19.50. I liked this dish better than the fondue. They have a decent wine selection and small beer choices. Be forewarned, it's pretty pricey here

A true Swiss person will tell you that you either eat fondue OR a meal, but the ideal meal for two or more here is the following. Lambs leaf salad with egg, bacon and French dressing (French dressing is white in Switzerland, not anything like the gross orange sweet dressing in the US),followed by fondue, then veal schnitzel. Roasti or noodles on the aide. This is the best!! Get both, don't let anyone tell you no.

Every time I have ever written a review at Yelp it has always been to highlight a business. This has been our worst experience in Basel, Switzerland. First off we arrive and are seated upstairs and no one approaches are table to greet us for at least 10 minutes. I'd smile and make eye contact with any of the older waiters and no one would come. I decided to use the restroom and when I got back my husband said he asked if we could share the large wienerschnitzel which was 60 francs. The waiter said no and we had to order two plates. We weren't that hungry and heard so many great things about the wienerschnitzel but thought that was odd we couldn't simply share. That is fine we were willing to work with it and ended up ordering a small wienerschnitzel and a raclett. Both combined would actually be cheaper than the large wienerschnitzel 60 francs! The food was good. Was it amazing? Not really. Finally we finish our food and we sit for a good 20 min before anyone even approaches us. We both try to get their attention and can't. We make eye contact with our server twice. He acknowledges me and then continues to NOT bring our check. Finally he said I have a gift for you and place the check in my husbands hands. We laugh because we are still trying to be patient. And tells my husband to follow him. He makes him go where they are all cooking and then tells him here... Just add a tip and then hit ok. Very very rude! I was a waitress for over 10 years and have been in the hospitality for over 15 years. I know how difficult it is to work in this industry. However I have never ever not once treated a customer in this way. I also served in the USA and in Australia where tips aren't mandatory. This is the same in Switzerland. The Only reason I am giving this place two stars is because my husband came here last time he was in town about a month ago and had a great experience with one of the servers downstairs. If you do come here.. stay clear from an old tall and skinny bald man. Who seems to hate life and everyone in it. It's too bad. My husband spoke so highly of this place to me and was excited to share the experience because I was finally able to get to Basel with him on his work trips. It's safe to say neither of us will ever come back.

A traditional Swiss restaurant in the old town of Basel with the charm of old school tableside cooking. We shared the large portion of their signature Wiener schnitzel (made from veal) with tagliatelle, as well as a Caesar salad. Nothing inventive here: The schnitzel was pounded thinly and stretched to the size of a serving platter. It came to us perfectly golden and crisped. The tagliatelle was tossed with buttery breadcrumbs. A straightforward hearty dinner but expected for Swiss fare. We dined outside but the indoor seating looked a lot cozier--like being inside a mountain chalet.

Very nice restaurant, we had onion soup and swiss cheese fondue, both was great. Bit expensive, but you know, you are in Switzerland. Paid 80 CHF for cheese fondue, 2 onion soups and one bottle of still water. The service was good and quick.

3.5 stars if I could. Really overpriced and the food was just average. I had high expectations, as this restaurant had been recommended by my hotel. I had the Wiener Schnitzel which is done sort of table side. It was fresh, but just average in my opinion. There was nothing exceptional about the food. The service, however was outstanding - the best I think I had in Basel. Too bad the food didn't match. Very expensive for what you get.

Fantastic late afternoon meal... Amazing old building that pre-dates Yelp by a few centuries. Had the pork schnitzel, which came with two breaded and fried thin pork slices and a ton of the most perfect fries. Add bread and butter and you have this week's calories in one delicious sitting!

I had the Fondue with mushrooms: great! The classic WeinerSchnitzel with Spatzli: good! Wait Service: Excellent! Experience: Worth it. Price: Expensive

So the thing to do when you travel to Switzerland is have fondue, right? So we traveled over to the "French side" of Switzerland to have this experience. The service here was great; however, the food was "just okay" considering the amount of money you're shelling out for just bread and melted cheese mixed with wine. Maybe it's all part of the experience, but I was a tad bit disappointed. Definitely no Melting Pot, ladies and gents, so go ahead and dismiss that idea immediately. Literally, bread and cheese is their forte--although the waiter did bring us cooked vegetables to dip as well. That being said, the service here was impeccable, and our waiter was so friendly. So maybe if you're stopping in Basel, go here and try something else on the menu. :) Fondue was okay at the end of the day, but nothing really to write him about, but hey, at least we had the true Swiss experience?

Walk through the wooden door into a very pleasant is a bit twee restaurant. The food though is well worth a try out. The menu provides descriptions of the dishes in many different languages, so you will always know what your are getting. The staff are very friendly and the food is excellent. Well worth a try is the schnitzel and spatzli or rosti. Oh and the crepes - but make sure you leave room for them!

Wow! The customer service here is awesome! The place is clean and very comfy. I love coming back here, I try to stop by every time I visit Basel. Definitely recommend this place for all looking for a delicious meal. The only improvement I can recommend is changing out the teas... I ordered green tea and got a Lipton green tea bag, which is one of the cheapest and simple teas you can buy in USA.

Overpriced cheese fondue but it was good. Seri e was fast. Bottle of vino better than buying it by the glass. Classic tourist trap.

I had very high hopes for this place when I walked in and saw the traditional decor and the professional atmosphere. Sadly, the food is very, very simple, so it left a lot to be desired. While I realize traditional Swiss food *is* quite simple, I think it could be done better. My wife had a special with asparagus, potatoes, and veal. I had traditional schnitzel with rosti. It was tasty enough, but the rosti was way too crunchy, and the schnitzel was dry and boring. My wife's dinner was better, but equally boring. Both entrees were rather flavorless. The raclette was quite good, and I'd come back for just that and some beer. The service was great, the waiter was super friendly and happy to speak English and help us understand the menu. Overall a good experience, but it wasn't the kind of dinner we like investing two hours in. The prices were Swiss-tronomical, but then everything in Basel seems to be.

Excellent dinner! After several business dinners with fine food, we wanted a traditional Swiss meal before leaving town and this restaurant hit the mark. Ambiance is pleasant (hard to go wrong in a picturesque old wooden building), service was helpful, plenty of menu options and food was tasty! We ordered the veal Schnitzel; nice range of choices for side dish. I highly recommend the spatzli. Several people were ordering the Schnitzel cooked out in the center of the restaurant but you can save a few $$'s by ordering the same thing, cooked in the kitchen.

Our first night in Basel and we found this wonderfully quaint restaurant. They have an expansive menu and warm ambience dining room upstairs. The truffle cheese fondue was delicious and the veal schnitzel was exactly what I wanted. I had thin cut French fries - a perfect side dish. The waiter recommended a blonde beer which was a perfect accompaniment for both the fondue appetizer and main course. The waiters were all very friendly. They worked together to offer a great experience and excellent service. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

If I had to pick a favorite dinner from this trip, this would be the one. Dinner started with delicious bread, then soup served in the cutest bowls, and then our entrees. You have your choice to have it prepared tableside or in the kitchen. We had the kitchen prepare ours. We had schnitzel with delicious sides. If I could remember the name of the side dish I had, I would list it, but it was very similar to a potato pancake. We opted to eat on the second floor although al fresco would have worked, it was a beautiful spring evening. Unfortunately, I am allergic to cigarette smoke and indoors spared me a migraine. For almost our entire meal, we were the only diners on the second floor. That provided us very personal service and time to visit with both our waiter and the bus person. They have been satisfying hungry patrons since 1947. It is a lovely old wooden building with the expected creaky steps. Dining is casual and credit cards accepted. My mouth is watering and I wish I could return ~ right now.

This is a place that showed up on Yelp as having traditional Swiss culinary dishes. It was one of my last nights visiting the beautiful Basel Switzerland and I decided to visit here. It was a cooler evening, but, I sat in their patio area and had cheese fondue. It was a pleasant experience, and good service. It was pretty spendy for a fairly basic meal, but, that is true for much in Basel.

A lovely authentic Swiss dining experience in the heart of Basel. Fondue is abundant in this town and I made sure to take advantage of all of it. Being my last night in Basel before heading up to Paris, I had to get one last fondue fix and Walliser Kanne did not disappoint. Sadly the fondue alone, it all its ooey gooey glory, is enough to fill up even a seasoned eater's belly. I had the Pumpkin Soup, bits of bread in fondue, lots of Baseler wine and was stuffed to the gills all too quickly; I suddenly wished I had a second stomach. I really wanted delve into the tableside Wiener Schnitzel, but it was just too much. I saw a lot of other diners doing it and I was envious - it smelled and looked awesome. The service was very efficient and friendly. The food came out so fast, that we were done eating in the matter of an hour. I wouldn't have minded sticking around longer, but we wanted to bar hop a bit on the way back up that big hill to our hotel. Wearing heeled boots in this town is a bad idea! My only concern is that Walliser Kanne is not cheap. Switzerland is notoriously expensive, but I did not feel the fondue here should have warranted such a hefty price tag at $50 per person. During my visit in Switzerland, I had similar wine and fondue that was much more reasonably priced. All in all a very good experience. I hope to visit Switzerland again very soon!

Having lunch at the Walliser Kanne was one of the best meals I had my entire vacation. We had the specials that day which were a steak with kraut butter and a pork schnitzel with a mushroom type sauce and egg noodles that was to die for. We sat at one of their outdoor tables so we didn't experience the tableside cooking. Service at the end of the meal is quite slow so we were ready to settle the bill long before the waiter produced it, but this seems to be typical of every place we ate at in Europe. I'm assuming lingering after a meal is part of their culture.

Great place to get some classic fondue and schnitzel with a wait staff that speaks very good English along with being friendly and helpful.

My girlfriend and I looked for a restaurant offering fondue. Read in the internet about the Waliser Kanne. A nice place with very polite and friendly staff. They served 200 gramm cheese per person. You can choose between cheese fondue, cheese fondue with flat mushrooms or with champagne. It was very tasteful and I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Best schnitzel in Basel. Every time. Service was very good although a little hectic due to the Jazz festival and the crowds of people packed on the street right outside. Had the Rösti during this visit and our guest had the bratwurst. Excellent on all accounts!

Really great, but can still be topped. Lots of meat eater choices, but the vegetarian was a little bit boring.

Cheese fondue was spectacular. Very good bier selection. Atmosphere was warm and festive. Great place for fondue.

Had a great dinner there a while ago which was flawless. Only 4 stars though because the complementary postcards at the bar never made it to their destinations (Canada,Russia) not sure if they were even sent

This was our first dinner on a two-week European trip with the kids. The ambiance was classic and so was the Swiss food. The fondue was fabulous (truffle was our choice - delicious). The Wienerschnitzel was also excellent. The server was friendly, but not forthcoming with recommendations. He just said, "Everything is good." He clearly understood the mechanics of serving, but was not nuanced in the artistry of serving. Expensive, but probably worth it for the traditional Swiss experience.

I've eaten here on 3 separate occasions and always enjoyed the food. Authentic German menu finely prepared and quality meals every time.

If you fancy fondue for 80 Euros this is the place to go... But if you just want a good meal for an honost price this is not the place to go.
