Over the past few years, I’ve noticed Walmart move away from what made it such a convenient and customer-friendly place to shop. Since the pandemic, stores no longer operate 24/7, and instead of improving the in-store experience, they’ve added more congestion and less service.
Aisles are now routinely cluttered with DoorDash and Walmart “pickup” shoppers competing with customers for the same products. Stockers and their oversized carts often block aisles during busy hours, when stocking used to be done overnight or during low-volume times.
Self-checkout has replaced most cashiers, creating longer lines and more confusion, especially when purchasing age-restricted items or dealing with the increasing number of locked cases. What’s worse, Walmart now stations employees to watch you scan your own items and check your receipt as you leave.
Walmart used to be about convenience, selection, and value. Today, it feels more like a warehouse you have to navigate on your own. I truly hope management re-evaluates how these operational changes affect the actual shopping experience.
