The Wanderer Cottages

"Why book?  This collection of 17 quintessential white clapboard New England cottages has cool, surf shack-inspired decor and a prime location within biking distance to Kennebunkport’s best restaurants, shops, and beaches.    Set the scene Solo travelers and couples wearing Vineyard Vines and Faherty apparel play bocce ball on the seagrass-and-hydrangea landscaped lawn and sip beers in Adirondack chairs surrounding fire pits. Most of them are East Coast creatives here for a quick coastal getaway. They love the surf vibe, but very few of them actually surf (at least in Maine’s brisk waters). They’ve come to eat lobster rolls, ride cruiser bikes around town, and hang by the hotel’s heated saltwater pool. The backstory This collection of stylish beach cottages is owned by Lord & Harrington, LLC, the company that also founded Batson River Brewing & Distilling, which has outposts in Kennebunk, Biddeford, Wells, and Portland, Maine. The property management company, Atlantic Hospitality, also oversees popular area retreats including Sandy Pines Campground in Kennebunkport and Salt Cottages in Bar Harbor. The grounds were once home to the Kennebunker Cottages, which fell into disrepair and were ultimately replaced with these stylish new accommodations. Cottage number six is named for the original property and a retro Kennebunker sign hangs in its living room.  The rooms Each studio and one-bedroom cottage has a cute name, like Love Shack (#11) or Surf Shack (#3) and has been decorated with vintage black-and-white surf photography, nautical-themed antiques, and custom rope-wrapped surfboards created by Kennebunkport’s Gold Standard Woodworking. Cozy 200-square-foot studios are great crash pads if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach. If you plan to hang, one-bedroom cottages are double the size and have a separate living room. All feature mini-fridges and wet bars and most are dog friendly. If you’re traveling for an extended period, book the two-bedroom guesthouse, which comes with a full kitchen. Food and drink There isn’t a restaurant, but complimentary breakfast bags filled with orange juice, fruit, and yogurt are delivered to your cottage door each morning. The staff are happy to suggest their favorite local eats. Bennett’s Sandwich Shop, beloved for its gigantic cheesesteaks, is across the street and the numerous restaurants around Dock Square, including Batson River, a three-level brewpub from the hotel’s founders, are one mile away. Halfway between the hotel and Dock Square is excellent newcomer Wandby Landing. Rooms start at $202 per night. The neighborhood/area A prime location on a leafy street one mile from Kennebunkport’s buzzy Dock Square allows guests to skip the hassles of summer traffic and parking and use free cruiser bikes to visit downtown’s lobster shacks, bars, and boutiques. Mother’s Beach is just a half-mile away, and other popular beaches, like Parsons, Kennebunk, and Gooch’s are a short drive. Kayakers can launch at Mousam River, around one mile away. The service Service is low touch, but insidery. The rotating staff that man the front desk are super plugged into the local scene and can arrange surf lessons at Gooch’s Beach with awesome surf school Aquaholics, boat outings aboard First Chance Whale Watch, and reservations at top tables (they’ll even tell you which bartender to ask for at local watering holes). For families The property is adults-only. Eco effort This is one area the hotel can improve upon even if it starts by eliminating plastic water bottles and utensils.  Accessibility There is one accessible cottage with a roll-in shower and grab bars. Anything left to mention? Cottages are spaced about 10 feet apart and while there aren’t side windows looking into other units, you may find yourself sitting alongside your neighbors on the Adirondack chairs on the front lawn. The 1965 Land Rover Defender parked out front of the property was once owned by a professor from California who traveled to more than 300 countries across all seven continents. His nomadic spirit inspired Wanderer designer Mark Cotto to buy the vehicle and convert it into a stationary art piece topped with surfboards perfect as a backdrop for Instagram stories." - Jen Murphy

We had the most wonderful stay at Wanderer Cottages in Maine! From the moment we arrived, Mark and his incredibly friendly staff made us feel right at home. Everyone we met was kind, accommodating, and clearly took so much pride in making sure each guest has a top-notch experience. The property is absolutely beautiful—just like the pictures, if not even better in person! Every corner of the space has been thoughtfully designed, from the charming decor to the little details that really elevate the experience. It’s clear that a lot of love and care went into creating this peaceful retreat. Our cottage was cozy, quiet, and incredibly private—perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. Housekeeping keeps everything spotless, and we were so impressed by how clean and well-maintained everything was. Each morning, we loved waking up to a complimentary breakfast delivered right to our door—such a thoughtful and convenient touch. The cruiser bikes available for guests were perfect for exploring the area, and the quiet, relaxing pool quickly became one of our favorite places to unwind during the day. One of our favorite touches was the complimentary s’mores kit and the lovely fire pit area. Sitting under the stars, roasting marshmallows, and soaking in the serene atmosphere was such a memorable part of our trip. We enjoyed our stay so much that we extended it—and were completely surprised and touched when we returned to our cottage one day to find a complimentary bottle of wine and a beautiful platter of treats, just because the staff is that wonderful. The location couldn’t be better—just a short walk or drive to the beach and close to town, yet tucked away enough to feel like a true escape. If you’re looking for a peaceful, beautiful, and welcoming place to stay in Maine, Wanderer Cottages is it. We’re already dreaming of coming back!

Nice quite location. Kennebunkport is lovely for some nice shops and scenery. The little food place across the road was closed for the season so worth noting depending on time of year you visit We were offered an upgrade to the 3 bed house, which we obviously jumped at. Nice spacious, well equipped cottage with kitchen, dining area and lounge. The 2 double bedrooms were plenty big enough and the beds were nice and comfy. All rooms had individual heating/aircon which was great. However, there was no guard rails on the top bunk in 3rd bedroom though (not a problem for us) so would be a little concerned if you have young children sleeping up there . Unfortunately no kettle to make a cup of tea but there is a microwave so we just boiled a cup of water in there....no biggy. There were only 2 knives and 2 cups in cupboard when we arrived, but later found the rest of pots etc still in the dishwasher (clean) so remember to check in there if the cupboards are bare. You do hear some slight noise coming through the air vents in the floor, just the cleaners muffled voices and the distant spinning of the washing machine....nothing too distracting. But it wasnt really a problem as we were up early each morning anyeay. Our main disappointment was the breakfast on the 2nd day! The cool bag was hung on the peg outside in plenty of time each morning, and the 1st day was lovely! We got a huge blueberry muffin, a yogurt, a jar of fruit and tin of pineapple juice each...and a random single cheese string. We were leaving earlyish the following morning on a longish drive so having had such a great variety on the 1st day we decided we wouldnt need to buy anything as there would be enough to keep us going till nearler lunch when we could stop. However the next mornings bag felt very light and on opening it we found an apple and 2 tiny, bitesize muffins each! No juice, no yogurt....not even a cheesestring between us! The cottages are really quaint and in a lovely setting. Would definitely recommend and visit again but will pack the travel kettle and get some breakfast in just in case

We stayed at this quaint resort recently and were blown away by. Every detail is covered, from sunscreen, towels and by repellant at the pool, to a welcome drink and fresh baked cookies at check-in. Kits for s’mores are provided in your cottage and a communal fire is lit each night for guests to enjoy. We arrived early and Mark and Dorothy went out of their way to get us into our cottage as quickly as possible. ||No detail was overlooked in restoring and decorating all areas of the property - from start to finish, absolute perfection!

My mom and I had a wonderful four night stay at the Wanderer Cottages in June! I went in with pretty high expectations and was still blown away by our cabin, the amenities, and the service we experienced. Our cabin was cozy, beautiful, and had everything we needed (comfortable bed and pillows, big shower with great water pressure, mini fridge, coffeemaker, etc.) We loved having breakfast delivered every morning. The entire grounds are gorgeous and peaceful, with lots of greenery and outdoor seating.||Every employee we met was warm, friendly, and so eager to help! They set us up every evening with cookies and cocktails and had tons of recommendations for restaurants and things to see/do nearby. They have also thought of EVERYTHING you might need during your stay. We made daily use of the beach parking passes, bicycles and baskets, beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas, etc etc. Anything we needed, they had ready to go. It was one of the most relaxing trips we’ve ever been on.||The location is also perfect, less than a five minute drive to Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, and multiple beaches. This place is, quite simply, a wonder.

We couldn’t have been happier with our stay at Wanderer. Cottage #10 was everything we wanted and our hosts were lovely. If you want easy access to downtown without throngs of tourists outside your front door, then this is where you want to stay. Room was decorated with a elegant nautical theme and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. The daily breakfast delivered to our porch every morning was always delicious and well balanced. If you’re headed to Kennebunkport stay here. You won’t be disappointed!

We loved staying at the Wanderer! We were greeted with a cocktail, fresh baked cookies and a run down of all of the amenities. The cottages are beautiful and are perfect for a getaway with your partner. Everything is close by, even a fantastic sandwich shop across the street. It was a lovely experience and we highly recommend booking here!

Truly one of the best places I have ever stayed while traveling. You can tell things are well thought through here. Upon arrival a welcome drink, & cookies, we were well informed on the amenities offered. From the breakfast bags in the morning (juices, pastries, fruit/yogurt, cheese). The pool was adorable (heated!) the nightly fire pit (smokeless) and bags. Everything was spotless here and the beds were SO comfy. The location was perfect for us. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to come to the Kennebunk area and if back we will DEFINITELY return!

Yelp
When searching for a place in Maine to celebrate our anniversary, I came across The Wanderer Cottages in Kennebunkport. Initially loved the beach vibe appearance, the private cottages, it was adult only, and close proximity to the Lower Village. From the moment we arrived until our departure, we had an amazing experience. (We stayed for 3 days.) Upon checkin, we were offered glasses of rose wine and information regarding our stay. All staff we encountered were friendly and attentive. Our cottage was perfect. Clean, bright, and appointed with all we'd need during our stay. Every morning we were treated to a bag of breakfast items left at our door. When we weren't out exploring the area we enjoyed sitting around the fire pit, using bocce ball court, and lounging at the pool. They've really thought of everything. We would absolutely stay there again and would recommend it to others.

Yelp
Our stay Wanderer Cottages was great! Sadly, we only had 24 hours there, but the cottages were best in class. We also loved the unique and detailed touch - towels & sunscreen at the pool, fresh cookies at check in, high quality fixtures in the rooms, bikes and lounging all through the property. Highly recommend to escape from the crowds at Kennebunkport

Yelp
Great location! Not far from the beach, Kport, restaurants and shopping. Cottages are bright, clean and smelled new. Spent 3 days over Labor Day. We were welcomed with an afternoon cocktail and cookie. Everyone we encountered during our stay were accommodating, professional, polite and knowledgeable. Chairs outside our cabin are comfortable, enjoy coffee in the cool mornings and a glass of wine in the afternoon shade. Interesting reading material can be found in the cottage. Enjoyed the Bocce court and firepit. Did not have time to try the bicycles and pool. At checkout, a goodie bag was provided for the car ride home. Very relaxing stay. Have planned another stay in the future. Nice addition to the area.

Yelp
We stayed here this past weekend and loved our stay. The individual little cabins were extremely clean and comfortable. The staff were very nice and accommodating. There is a fire pit we sat around each night and met other visitors staying there. It was nice not to have people above or below or in a room next to you banging or being loud because you have your own space. The staff welcomed us with a cocktail and cookies and each morning provided a well stocked tote bag with fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cheese and drinks to start your morning off with some nutrition. When departing they also presented us with a gift. We certainly will be back for a relaxing stay.

Yelp
The cottages are advertised as a peaceful adult only getaway. Nothing could be further from the truth. When I arrived there were already two children staying there and a day later two more children arrived and woke me up by shouting and playing in the pool. I asked the manager on two separate occasions as to why there were kids at the resort. The first answer was that he had to honor previous reservations before they changed over to an adult only resort. I am not sure how that can be true since it opened up as an adult only resort. The second time he did not have an answer for me since the family just made the reservation the other day. Also no apology was forthcoming. I e-mailed his Manager and have not received a response. If you are looking for a serene, adult get-away this is not the place. Obviously, not very good customer service either.
