On October 24th my friends and I went to Warayakiya Roppongi to have a last dinner in Tokyo and say goodbye to our wonderful 22 days trip in Japan, little did we know it wouldn’t end as we expected.
We ordered wagyu, fish, chicken, tempura, lamen, eel, cheese and it was all very good!
The crew was very respectful and was putting a constant effort to understand us (like most of the places we visited in Japan) even though we didn’t speak any Japanese and made sure everything we ordered was ok.
When we were almost finished, one of the waitresses came with her phone and read to our group a polite message in English saying the police was about to come but we didn’t need to worry because we were not concerned.
We were shocked to find out a table had ordered wagyu (one of the most expensive meat in the world *known by being a fat meat*) and refused to pay for the dish because there was - dramatic pause - fat on it saying they knew what good meat was.
Not only the 4 costumers had refused to pay but they called the police over the restaurant’s chef saying they were being tricked. We had ordered the same plate and there was nothing wrong with it (btw it is such a treat in Japan).
When the police came the costumers said they were horrified neither the restaurante crew nor the police spoke English and were saying things like “it’s absurd they don’t speak English”. (???)
So I am writing this review not only to say it IS a good restaurant, the crew is very professional, the chef is great, but also to say I cannot think of a most disrespectful way of treating people in their country you don’t speak the language and don’t understand the culture.
After they left we talked to the restaurant’s crew and made sure they knew we enjoyed the food and not surprisingly all the other costumers that were at the restaurant (from Turkey, Switzerland, Brazil) gathered to say the same thing. We couldn’t believe what was happening.
Peace ✌️ and be kind
