8 Incredible Trips Across Canada Run by Indigenous Tour Operators

"Run by knowledge keepers Matricia Bauer and her daughter Mackenzie Brown of the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, I experienced Warrior Women’s guided walks in Jasper National Park that highlight healing plants, and attended workshops focused on making salves, lotions, and other plant-based products." - Diane Selkirk

I attended Matricia's Fireside Chat. Matricia shared her knowledge of traditional medicines and how they are used to Smudge. She sang traditional songs and shared with us what it is to be an Indigenous Woman. It was a very powerful evening and I was very moved by this experience.

Matricia took us on a plant walk around the Jasper Historical Society. She had such an incredible energy, keeping everyone engaged and ensuring everyone was having a great experience. She was incredibly knowledgeable about indigenous plant and medicine traditions, sharing so much information in a short period of time and opening our eyes to a new way to view and engage with the world around us. A fantastic experience for all ages, would definitely recommend!

Matricia met a large group of us at our lodgings near Jasper and led us on an incredible plant walk and make & take experience around the property. She is so knowledgeable about Indigenous ways of living and being, as well as more western/scientific approaches/information and how it all ties together. Her relaxed storytelling approach is memorable and engaging. I would highly recommend an experience with her to anyone visiting the area!

We took the tour today! very good and relaxing experience. Matricia is very knowledgeable about plants in Jasper and I learned a lot about edible plants. plus the precious knowledge of first nation history and culture. the best part of the program was making a pomade with rose tincture and bee wax for ourselves and Im already in love with it. gonna do it again in harvest season!

We had the immense pleasure of doing a plant walk with Matricia while at Jasper Fairmont. It was so informative and fun! She is a very knowledgeable woman and strong spirit. I would highly recommend this session be held at the beginning of a conference as it would heighten your groups awareness of their surroundings! The creation of the rose balm at the end was an added bonus and such a treat! Thank you!

My family took Matricia's walk and the kids can't stop talking about the plants we saw. In fact, I think rosehips will forever be called "itchy bum berries" in our house. Matricia's willingness to share her knowledge and ways of knowing the plants and her funny, off- the- cuff speaking style were so engaging. We all commented after that we thought we would have gone further afield on the walk than we did, but that's led to a lot of reflection about our settler viewpoints and what constitutes a medicine.

My 18 year old daughter found Matricia and we went on her recommendation. We loved this experience. She was knowledgeable and fun and introduced us to both the power of natural medicine and the culture of first peoples who employed them. There was a mix of old, young and middle on our tour and everyone seemed to enjoy this a lot.
