19 Best Restaurants in Bali, Offering Indonesian Classics, Vegan Tasting Menus, and More | Condé Nast Traveler

"Warung Pak Malen specializes in one thing only: babi guling, whole roasted suckling pig, a signature of Balinese cooking and ceremonies. A set meal here consists of pork prepared in a variety of ways. First up is a heady spiced broth with pork, which you drink directly from the bowl. Then it's on to the main event, a bamboo plate piled high with rice, roasted pork, pork satay, fried pork, a piece of fried pork rind, some pork skin, and braised pork. Sides include traditional lawar, a mix of long-cooked vegetables, and spicy sambal. This is a meal that most visitors will try at least once—Balinese people eat it often—and Pak Malen manages to be a step above other warungs without abandoning its traditional feel." - Regan Stephens

This was our first time trying babi guling, and it was an unforgettable food experience. We specifically wanted to try authentic Balinese cuisine, and this local restaurant delivered exactly that. The focus here is clearly on the food, and it shows in every bite. The babi guling was beautifully prepared, with crispy roasted pork skin that had a satisfying crunch, while the meat underneath was tender, juicy, and well seasoned. The balance of flavours was excellent—rich, savoury, and aromatic without being overwhelming. Each component on the plate complemented the pork perfectly, allowing you to experience different textures and traditional spices in one meal. What stood out most was how fresh and authentic everything tasted. This didn’t feel like a modified version for tourists, but rather a genuine local dish prepared with care and confidence. The seasoning was spot-on, and the portion size was generous, making it a very satisfying meal. The sides that came with the babi guling added depth to the dish, enhancing the overall flavour rather than distracting from it. Every element worked together to create a well-rounded plate that truly showcased Balinese cooking. Overall, this was an excellent introduction to babi guling. If you want to focus on food quality and experience real local flavours, this place is well worth visiting. We loved it and would happily come back again.

Simple local place. We went for the Nasi Spesial Pisah (not spelling mistake, the menu really put Nasi spesial) very flavourful to mix everything and eat. Love the satay. It’s very good! We added extra satay! You can grab food actually. So glad we made the trip here although we just had lunch 😂

One of the very nice Babi Guling we have tried!! For those who like spicy, this is the place…order infront, find a table and wait for the number to be called for the food to be delivered… we went around 1230pm which was pretty crowded but we manage to find a table.. Will visit again the next time I am in Bali…

My must visit when in Bali and totally love their revamped outlet!! Love the 2nd floor as it’s brighter and nice greenery. If only the ground floor is brighter and have greenery too. The chili got such kick that I can’t stop eating it and gotta order extra meat to go with it.

Babi Guling Pak Malen is a must visit for anyone who enjoys a bold, spicy take on classic Balinese food. This place serves one of the spicier versions of babi guling, and it doesn’t hold back which is definitely a treat for chilli lovers. The pork skin is a standout: beautifully roasted, thin, and crackly, delivering that deeply satisfying crunch with every bite. The lawar is equally memorable — intensely spicy, fragrant, and unapologetically traditional, adding real depth and heat to the plate. The soup served here is jukut balung, a rich and comforting pork rib soup with a deeply savoury broth. While my personal favourite Balinese soup is actually jukut ares (banana stem), the jukut balung here is still very enjoyable and pairs well with the richness of the pork. I find myself coming back here often, mainly because the location is very convenient, making it an easy choice whenever I’m craving babi guling done right. Pak Malen sadly passed away around 2015, but his legacy clearly lives on. The flavours remain authentic, the spice levels are fearless, and the soul of the dish is very much intact. A true Balinese classic that continues to deliver.

Saw a friend posting about this on Instagram so we actually travelled 1 hour from Uluwatu just to try — and honestly, worth it! 😍 The babi guling was really flavourful and the portion was just nice. Simple local place, nothing fancy, but the food speaks for itself. If you love Balinese food, this is definitely a must-try. So glad we made the trip here!

Amazing place! Love how it feels modern but still keeps the traditional Balinese vibe. The Babi Guling Special blew me away—so many flavors in one bite! The Be Genyol was super tasty too. Easy 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
