A triumphal arch honors George Washington (1732-1799), first president of the United States, that was constructed of white Tuckahoe marble conceived and designed by architect by Stanford White who imitated a Roman triumphal arch located in Washington Square Park, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, NYC. I am always enamored with the architectural charm, history, spandrel figures and two pier relief sculptures of George Washington embedded on north side of the eastern pier which is very well crafted. It is very similar to the The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile in Paris, France, one of the most famous monuments, as I had the great pleasure to physically see in-person. The Washington Square Arch has a strong presence in Washington Square Park as well as a place to flock and congregate for New Yorkers, and New York University students. It strongly reminds me of Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile in Paris, France. Ahh, nostalgia for my past Paris, France 2002 visit. With weather pending locals would street busk near Washington Square Arch including a man who schlep a grand piano.
In recent times this NYC park has, very disappointedly, become a hotbed for heavy drug traffic activity further enhancing urban decay and decline.
