Out of the several different hotels we stayed during our trip to Japan, this was probably my least favorite hotel. But it may not be fair to compare this place with the other places we stayed at, especially since the other hotels are more expensive and possibly on a different tier.
This hotel, Hida Takayama Washington Plaza Hotel, is located a short distance away from the train station. Upon entering, you go up the escalator to reach the front desk on your right (the elevator for hotel rooms is on your left). Similarly to other hotels, they will hold onto your luggage before checking-in and after checking-out. On this same level, possibly near the front desk, I found some free magazines that featured Takayama's local specialties. This was great to peruse to see if there was anything I wanted to buy as omiyage.
The room itself felt a bit smaller, but was fitted with 3 beds (one bed for each of us). We were provided with some amenities, including a toothbrush, a toothpaste, slippers, and bathrobes. The room was clean and comfortable.
The bathroom was mostly why I wasn't too fond of this room. First, it is located on a step higher than the room floor so you have to be careful going in and out (this arrangement is a bit unusual, but not a problem). It is very compact with the toilet and bathtub in there so there is very little space to dry yourself off after a shower. The biggest thing I didn't like was that there was space at the bottom of the door and the floor. This means that if I used the bathroom, my parents would hear everything; and I don't want ANYONE to hear me tinkle or poop. Also the bathroom was opposite of where the beds were located; talk about awkwardness! Luckily, there's a TV right next to the bathroom so I just asked my parents to put the volume higher.
If you're really private about your bathroom needs and staying with other people, you might want to reconsider this hotel. Otherwise, if you're on a budget, or just need a place to stay, this hotel would be great!
