3 Best Day Trips From Bangkok

"Currently the headquarters of the Mahanikai school of Buddhism, Thailand’s largest monastic order, Wat Mahathat dates back to the 18th century—it even precedes the founding of Bangkok—and is one of Ayutthaya’s most important landmarks. Its name translates to "Monastery of the Great Relic," and it's believed to house a relic of the Buddha. A crumbling complex in the middle of lush grassland, the site features traditional Khmer architecture (Angkor Wat–style), headless Buddha statues, chedis (Buddhist stupas), and faded mural paintings that roll through different courtyards and chambers (or what’s left of them). Although this is highly popular among local and international tourists, the ruins feel charged with an almost mystic energy." - Marianna Cerini

Visited in the morning and felt blissful with the ambiance and the generousity of this temple and its majestic society. Also, this on is free.

Beautiful temple! Just 5 minutes away from the Grand Palace. It’s worth the time visiting.

Love this small complex of multiple temples with beautiful Thai architecture details. Very few visitors when we were here on a weekday.

A peaceful place with a beautiful temple. I will definitely come back again if I have the chance.

It's such a relaxing place to walk around, and the architecture is stunning – perfect for photos! Unlike some of the more famous temples, it wasn't crowded at all, which made for a much more enjoyable experience. Being free to enter is a bonus (though I happily made a small donation). If you're looking for a beautiful and peaceful temple in Bangkok, this is the one!

Free admission. A very quiet place compared to the neighbouring temples teeming with tourists. There's a sign that mentions international meditation centre at one of the side entrances, but no indication within the complex. Nonetheless, it's a good place to practise meditation by yourself I guess. There's a big bodhi tree and a small museum. The museum has a small room filled with sutras engraved on bamboo or leaves Hardly any signage in English so use Google Lens or other tools to help if your really curious. It's quite a walk from Sanam Chai Station.

It's on the way to Grabd palace if you walk through the garden. It is place for meditation. The architecture is quite beautiful. A variety of statues of buddha are placed in and around the temple. Less popular place among tourists so mostly less crowded Toilets available. Time required 30 min to 1 hr.
