Seeing a Beloved Slice of Southeast Asia Anew on an Oceania Cruise

"Zipping through the streets of Bangkok in a tuk-tuk, dilapidated shophouses streaking across my periphery, I marvel again at the way the gold stupas glint under a fireball sun and strings of marigolds spill out of the wholesale flower market. Pok and I have plans to check out some galleries and a riverfront café in Charoenkrung, but we scrap them to summit the temple of Wat Saket. Dubbed Golden Mount, it is set atop the highest hill in Bangkok—344 steps up with 360-degree views of the city—and has a magnificent gilded chedi, a sacred marble structure enshrining relics of the Buddha."

Visiting Bangkok: My Suggested 3-5 Day Itinerary for 2025

"I love Wat Saket for its beautiful golden temple and the views from the top of its enormous chedi (about 100 meters high and 500 meters wide); at the base there’s an overgrown cemetery for 18th-century plague victims that adds an eerie historical layer to the visit." - Matthew Kepnes

The temple itself is not very big, but the whole complex is impressive! I liked the access path to the top, it's like a walk through a fairy tale world, with statues of all kinds of animals, with small ponds with colorful fish, with stairs winding through lush vegetation. From the top you have a very beautiful view of the city, I think it's interesting to see both the sunrise and the sunset from here. Up in the temple, there are also a few vending machines where you can buy water or juice. I visited it around 10 am and it wasn't very crowded. The descent is done on a different route!

Wat Saket – The Golden Mount is an absolute must-see in Bangkok. The climb up the 344 gentle steps is surprisingly easy and even feels fun, with plenty of spots to pause and catch your breath along the way. It’s also very doable with kids, who will enjoy all the little things to explore. At the top, you’re rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of Bangkok in every direction. Along the path and around the temple grounds, there are lots of charming details to discover – statues, small waterfalls, and ringing bells – which make the visit engaging for all ages. There’s also a drink stand at the top with very affordable prices, perfect for cooling down after the walk up. Overall, it’s a beautifully maintained and atmospheric site, offering both cultural interest and a fun experience for families. Truly a must-visit in Bangkok. Entrance fee is 100 THB per person, children are free. Temple clothing regulation are less strict.

Wat Saket is one of the historic temple in Bangkok which is also known as Temple of the Golden Mountain. It features a distinctive 60m artificial hill, Phu Khao Thong (Golden Mountain), topped by a golden chedi, offering panoramic views of the city. The temple has origins dating back to the Ayutthaya period and was renovated and named by King Rama I. There is an entrance of 100 thb for foreigners but the price was worth to pay. Temple surrounding was clean and there was quite a lot of parking lot. The night view of this temple was simply stunning and captivating. Climb up the stairs of 344 steps allow you to do some light exercise while calming your heart and mind.

I liked this place. Of course it is one of many buddhistic temples in Bangkok, but this one has some extra. You can walk up a little hill/temple and from the top you have a nice view over Bangkok. The ticket is 100 Baht, and of course as always you have to wear appropriate clothes. For some of the buildings you have to take off your shoes. You can get something to drink here as well as some souvenirs or the right clothes, should you wear something inappropriate for the temple. For me it was one of the temples I enjoyed most.

What an amazing temple! Some of the reviews were not accurate so here's the truth: It's a not so hard climb up, for a one of a kind view of Bangkok. They have mist streamers to cool you off along the way up. There is a cafe near the base of the temple. If you go when it opens before the tourist groups come, you'll be the crowd and the sun! The only thing that sucked for me, is there was some beautiful amulets but they are cash only. Make sure you check out everything on the temple grounds. There are plenty of other places to see other than just the Golden Mount!

Google
Defitenely one of the highlights of Bangkok. The temple is in top of a mountain and takes about 20 25 minutes to reach it(about 360 steps). During the paths you can find some bells to sing and ones reached the top there is a beautiful views of the city. Worth a visit!

A beautiful temple, indeed most of Bangkok temples are, somehow my wife and I find a temple to Be more enjoyable if it’s not to busy, so this one isn’t. Is not one of the most famous and popular so our visit was so enjoyable, we had fun visiting this and emerging into the culture. The top of the temple provides great views and remember always to respect the culture and dress accordingly. Although they have a small store providing refreshments mind Bangkok could be very hot so bring your own refreshments
