Wat Tha Ka Rong - Gastro Obscura

"Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya river away from the tourist center of Ayutthaya, Wat Tha Ka Rong, aka The Temple of the Blackbird or the Monastery of the Landing of the Crying Crow, is an unexpected novelty away from the main city center. Formerly a campsite for Burmese troops in the White Elephant War, it is made up of a temple, Wat Tha, and a monastery, Wat Ka Rong. The site dates back to around the mid-16th century. Although still a working religious site, Wat Tha Ka Rong is an assault on the senses, it’s a unique blend of color, kitsch, and sometimes downright crazy, meaning that it really should be a must-see on anyone’s list when visiting Thailand’s former capital. Imagine a temple, crossed with a British seaside amusement arcade, add thousands of animal and superhero statues and you have some idea of what this place looks like—and that’s before you get to the floating market. The floating market at the temple offers some of Thailand’s best-loved dishes at super cheap prices— think plates of Pad Thai, Moo Satay (pork with peanut sauce), and Som Tam (papaya salad). After gorging yourself on food, head down to the side of the river and buy bags of fish food that look like colorful polystyrene pieces. Here you can throw them to the catfish who climb all over each other just to get a scrap. And not to worry if you need to use the bathroom here, thanks to its innovative design, Wat Tha Ka Rong also proudly boasts the Thailand “Best Toilet Award.” At the time of writing, Wat Tha Ka Rong is mostly frequented by locals and there aren’t that many visitors from outside of Thailand, meaning that this temple offers a much more authentic experience than Ayutthaya’s main tourist-orientated floating market. Another plus point of Tha Ka Rong is that it does not offer the dubious animal attractions of its larger competitor, which can be challenging viewing for the average western traveler. Know Before You Go Wat Tha Ka Rong is open all week, but to see all of it’s attractions it is best to go on a weekend, as this is when the floating market is open. Before Bangkok, Ayutthaya was the capital city of Thailand and is still a popular tourist destination. Therefore, it is very easy to get to. A bus from Mo Chit or Victory Monument will set you back around 80 – 100 Thai Baht and takes less than two hours. If you’re looking for a scenic journey, the train from Hualamphong station takes 2.5 hours and is even cheaper – only 22 baht. Ayutthaya is also very easy to reach from other cities in Central Thailand.Once you arrive in Ayutthaya, the most popular way to see the attractions is by bike. Wat Tha Ka Rong isn’t on all of the tourist maps, but locals will be happy to add it for you. If cycling isn’t your bag, tuk-tuks are all around the centre of Ayutthaya, and you should be able to get to the Temple for around 200 baht." - dhall111, Fred Cherrygarden, linkogecko, gunhildlitwin

Wat Tha Ka Rong Floating Market is for an outsider a very interesting place. I have visited Pattaya Floating Market, so, I waited to see something similar in Wat Tha Ka Rong. There isn't. Actually, one can buy earnings or merits there in Wat Tha Ka Rong Floating Market. There are skeletons and other human size mechanic dolls asking your money, child monk dolls waiting for your money, too, there is everykind of everything where you can put your extra bahts to, and in return you get - earnings. We visited Wat Tha Ka Rong Floating Market during the day time, and there were almost no other visitors, but I think the Wat has its function in the Buddhist's religious worldview. What is remarkable in the Buddhist imagery is the importance and even holiness of different animals, because my own experience is that it's quite difficult to be a vegetarian there in Thailand 😂

The temple that keeps on giving. Just when you think you've seen everything you stumble on another little area. From robotic pandas and robotic women welcoming you to the toilets, to giant models of famous monks, a floating market, just to mention some of the attractions this temple has it all. You'll not be bored. Went during the week and it was fairly quiet. I can only imagine going by the car parks and seating area it gets busy at other times.

Unique, atypical, and different. More than 5000 idles/dummies/dolls. Yes, 1000s n 1000s. What can you do with stuff you have, all kinds of- create a unique and different experience. It’s either 10mins thing for some or half day picnic style exploration and appreciation for others. It’s definitely a split experience. I personally appreciate and there are many wow moments.

BIG and beautiful... so colorful Built along the river, where there are facilities for selling fish food. For 10 baht you get a bucket full of mixture, and the sight of the fish pouncing on the food is wonderful....

This temple has many different buildings, some very extensively decorated and most with interesting displays and "games" for making merit, which means donating money. I suggest getting rid of your extra coins here! There are indeed some crows and other birds, and a market at the entrance and by the river. There are plenty of photo opportunity e.g. the floating market

This is an excellent smorgasbord barbecue, it has more seafood that I have ever seen any other barbecue offers. It also comes with your typical Thai barbecue and then for an extra 100 thb. You can have the grill alongside. Two of us ate there along with a beer and the total bill was 789 thb. With all the seafood that I can eat. My girl made herself very full on the clams. Recommend if you're ever in the area, stop by it is quite busy but well worth the food.

An absolute collection of diversity. In addition to its sacred functions, this temple serves as a market with devotional items, collection and donations for various purposes. There is also a market column and a playground for children, made of mechanical parts, figures of superheroes and transformers

Perhaps it's because we arrived late in the day, but we really couldn't figure out what this place was...There are many strange animal statues around and two (actually quite cool) beached boats. The nearby mosque was a pleasant surprising, as the evening call to prayer began just after we left.
