Wategos Beach is one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots in Byron Bay. It’s a sheltered beach where the waves feel close and gentle, giving it a more intimate and quiet feel compared to the busy main beach. The only downside is parking; it’s limited and can be especially challenging on weekends.
If you’re up for a little adventure, you can park in town and either ride your bike (around 10 minutes) or walk (up to 35 minutes). It’s a lovely way to get there and definitely takes the stress out of trying to find a park.
There are free beachside gas BBQs, picnic tables, nearby cafés, and a public restroom, which makes it such a great spot to spend a slow, relaxing day. Another highlight is the walking path that leads up to the Captain Cook Lookout. There are lots of stairs, and some parts feel a little steep, but the views are absolutely stunning. I found it to be a moderate and very enjoyable walk.
Just keep in mind that the path isn’t wheelchair accessible.
A must-visit if you’re in Byron; peaceful, scenic, and perfect for a beautiful beach day.
