I had heard a lot about this club and was really looking forward to a night out here, but man was I disappointed with my experience.
After waiting in line for 30 minutes and sweating it out the whole time to see if we'd get in, by a stroke everyone I'm with gets by the bouncers unscathed. However, that was the end of our luck.
When we got downstairs, we see that music is playing but most people are just standing around conversing at the bar, outside on the dock, or while standing on the dancefloor. That's all fun and nice, but the status quo remained the same until about 3am, which confused me, as I'm used to people being more into, you know, actually DANCING, when they come out to clubs. On the other hand, the location next to the water most certainly is something that makes this club unique, as the view from the dock area is terrific. When we were sitting on the dock for awhile waiting for the dance-floor to heat up a little bit, I absolutely loved the atmosphere outside, especially on a warm summer night.
However, despite the picturesque setting, I kept finding more and more things about Watergate that I just wasn't a fan of as well. In the end, we actually ended up going home early (around 4am), just because we weren't having fun, and things certainly weren't improving.
Main drawbacks:
-Club gets ridiculously stuffy from a combination of cigarette smoke and overcrowding (club fills up early)
-People aren't the best or the friendliest (Very hipster, entitled, standoffish)
-Extremely dim/minimalist lighting (darkest club I've ever been to)
-Club is very small (gets packed easily, little room to dance)
-No A/C (did I mention it's hot as hell in there)
-Expensive drinks (9 euro whiskey drinks)
-Music is hit or miss, unless you're going on a night with a well-known DJ
-Barely anyone danced!!
If you want to go to Watergate just to go to a "big-name" club, be my guest. However, if you're just looking for a fun night out in Berlin, I'd highly suggest exploring any other options you may have.
