The Waterpoort (also often called Porta Regia or Coninckxpoort) was a city gate on the Scheldt in Antwerp. In 1624 it was erected as an arch of honor for King Philip IV.
The arch was built on the Vlasmarkt by Hubrecht van den Eynde with the help of Hans van Mildert. Although the design is attributed to Rubens, there is no evidence of Rubens involvement, unlike the identity of the sculptors.
The gate was also known as the Maaigat or Maeyersgat because a statue of Mary stood here. Following works on the Scheldt quays, the gate was moved to Sint-Jansvliet in the 1880s.
When the entrance building of the new Sint-Anna pedestrian tunnel had to be built at that location in 1933, the gate was moved again. In 1936 she was finally rebuilt on the Gillisplaats on Het Zuid , on the filled-in Zuiderdokken .
Because it has already stood in two other places, it was nicknamed 'the walking gate.
