The area is a bit of a desert for good food, so this is a real find: a small friendly restaurant, tucked away close to the walls of this historic town.
First impressions are a little puzzling - it looks as if you are entering a railway station or schoolroom, tucked away across a small car park. Inside is a single room with a conservatory, a high pitched ceiling and a bar at the end. The décor isn't anything to write home (lots of wood, books on shelves, fussy wallpaper) about but it is spacious and inoffensive. But the food makes up for it.
The dishes are modern British in style, with locally sourced, fresh ingredients and imaginative menus. The portions are amazingly generous for the quality. Two starters, two mains and a pudding with wine came to £65. In London you would easily pay half as much again for the quality.
