I was reluctant to leave a review because I want to keep this gem to myself. The place was as gorgeous as it looks in the photos. Staff was attentive and helpful, giving us towels and toilet paper when needed, helping us find the silverware when we were idots, and even promptly cleaning up a bird that died on the patio. You cannot check in before 3 pm unless you pay for the privilege. We stayed in the 3 BR with private pool, which is pricey, but feels like a good deal considering you're getting the equivalent of 3 hotel rooms plus a kitchen, dining room, living room, private pool, and a balcony with a gorgeous view.
The jacuzzi and cold plunge on the roof deck were great (and free, just need to reserve the time, which was easy), and the sunset from up there was incredible.
The main pool area is nice, full drink menu available, but no real restaurant. There are restaurants right next door in both directions (and in town), so plenty of places to eat. The website says they do an open flame dinner on Fridays, but it wasn't happening the Friday we were there. One of our drivers said they only do it for special occasions now.
We had the hotel arrange massages, which were good and very reasonably priced compared to U.S. standards. But we booked our excursions ourselves through someone we've used on past trips to El Salvador.
The beach is a very popular surf spot. We don't surf, but did some swimming. The beach can be rocky depending on the time of year. If you cross the little river and walk to the other side of town, there is a sandier and more popular beach.
The town has basic tourist amenities. It's crawling with bohemian surfers and moneyed gringos whose patronage seems to be actively ruining it. You can sense that in five years it's going to be another generic tropical beach town strip mall, but for now it's clinging to that authetic and rustic El Salvador feel, stray dogs, local tiendas, small pupuserias, narrow dirt and stone streets, do-it-youself architecture, and even the occasional bolo.
Enjoy it while it lasts!
