I Followed Teams of Scientists on a Mission to Save Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — Here’s What I Learned

"I boarded a 64-foot catamaran with tubs wired to electrodes for what the team calls a “rapid stress test,” watching live coral fragments heated in seawater as part of hands-on experiments to mimic bleaching. I was alongside University of Technology Sydney scientists taking samples and measuring coral gases while, barely 200 feet away, tourists from another Wavelength vessel snorkeled and learned about conservation — a clear example of tourism and science working side by side. Wavelength is also one of six commercial operators involved in the Coral Nurture Program, and its founders (John Edmondson and colleagues) developed practical tools like stainless-steel Coralclips to attach fragments to damaged bommies; since 2018 the program has planted over 70,000 corals with an 85 percent survival rate and even recorded first spawning of planted corals in November 2021." - Kendall Hill

We had such a great time on our Great Barrier Reef tour with Wavelength and I cannot recommend them enough! The staff was incredible and it’s clear the owners genuinely care about the reef and environmental impacts. We had a marine biologist on board who taught us all about the reef and answered questions. Lunch and snacks were included and they even had a photographer who took pictures throughout the whole day! The boat is very nice and the group isn't too large where it feels overwhelming. They were great about trying to help people who get sea sick! Overall we had an excellent experience with wavelength and are so grateful we chose them for our excursion!

We had an amazing boat tour! The crew was incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable, and provided great chat! We visited three different fantastic spots, each one unique and beautiful. Seeing the turtles up close was unforgettable, and spotting a shark was the highlight of the trip. Highly recommended—an experience we’ll never forget, thanks for such a great day.

What a day! We did a full day snorkelling tour, 3 amazing locations, lots of coral and colourful fishies. The Team led by skipper Mike and Reef Master Guide Marcus, were phenomenal making sure our safety out on the water was No. 1 priority and all providing a highly personable experience. We felt crew very well looked after in a relatively small group. Catering was also spot on with fresh yummy food with the lovely Ginger serving. Might be a bit more expensive than other tours, but the extra is so worth it.

100/10 one of the best things I've ever done in my life and I truly can't wait to come back. Such an awesome day - the boat crew were impeccable, the weather was showing off and the reef was the cherry on top! Kate and Ginger were super knowledgeable on all the marine life, John was a fantastic Skippers (honestly, that boat parking in the afternoon after the quick dolphin detour? Well deserved round of applause) and I couldn't have asked for a better way to see (in my personal opinion) to best natural wonder in the world. I already can't wait to come back, I will DEFINITELY book this tour again and possibly tell every single person I come across until the end of time. Thank you Wavelength team for such an awesome day of making memories for this solo traveller!

We had a stellar day with the Wavelength crew and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reef adventure. The team was so professional and tailored the day to all their guests. They supply all you need for a good time, with access to a photo album at the end of the day! We had al the pleasure to see dolphins on the way to the reef and many whales on the way back to Port Douglas. What a treat!

A BIG THUMBS UP FROM US! Highly recommend wavelength. Really great crew, super friendly and couldn’t do enough to help. They bought us to great spots and we saw some amazing fish and coral. The boat was well equipped and was very comfortable. Great quality snorkel gear and wet suits. We were a family of 2 adults and 2 kids and we all enjoyed it immensely. We were delighted to learn they are the last family owned business that take trips to the outer reef.

We were part of a group of about 40 who went on a snorkeling tour, 8 am-4 pm, on a weekday in August 2025. The boat took about an hour to get from Port Douglas to the Opal Reef part of the Great Barrier Reef, where we snorkeled for an hour in each of three different spots. The crew were very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Snorkeling equipment was provided, and the tour met the needs of experienced and novice snorkelers alike. Lunch and refreshments were also provided, and they were able to meet various dietary needs, including gluten free for people with Celiac. The crew photographer took ~250 beautiful photos and shared them online via Drop Box at no added cost. An amazing experience, highly recommend.

Great crew, amazing sites and great pictures to take home! Food for the day is plenty & they have enthousiastic marine biologists to tell you everything about the reef; all in all, it was awesome! We even saw a whitetip reef shark!
