I can't relate to the negative reviews of Wayfinder at ALL. We just stayed at Wayfinder Waikiki for about a week and had the most pleasantly impressive experience that I felt compelled to write this review.
Let me start off by saying that if you're looking for a high-end luxury hotel, this is NOT it. If you book this hotel with this expectation, I can understand being disappointed. This is a smaller boutique hotel, better for people visiting on a budget, but we found that they were still able to create a trendy (but not tacky) and expensive vibe. We booked through Expedia.com in order to package our flight, hotel, and rental car into one. We were initially planning to stay at another, more expensive hotel, but when we saw that we were able to shave off about $300 per person on cost if we stayed at Wayfinder, we decided to give it a shot. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was hopeful. Wayfinder did not disappoint us at all.
Wayfinder is very centrally located and about a 5 minute walk from Waikiki beach and nearby shopping centers. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the valet who was kind and accommodating. We decided to pay for valet ($45/night) as we wanted to avoid the headache of looking for street parking on what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation. It was well worth it. We then headed over to reception to check in. The staff was so kind and welcoming and provided us with all the information we needed to make the most of our vacation. They informed us that we could check out complimentary boogie boards, flippers, and beach towels. There was also a board posted near the elevators which informed us of all the daily events/happenings at the hotel, as well as some local activities such as the KCC Farmer's Market on Saturday. A pretty purple orchid in the room card sleeve was a nice touch.
For two people, our room was the perfect size. I have definitely spent more money on smaller, less comfortable rooms at "name brand" hotels. We knew the room wouldn't be super fancy and that was okay with us as we planned to spend most of our time outdoors. That being said, it was so nice to come back to a room that was still very comfortable, had central air, a mini fridge, a cute little balcony with views of the nearby canal, and a big TV when we had down-time. Water pressure in the shower could have been a little better, but that was a minor detail for us. The decor is very quirky but that's what made it endearing in my opinion.
B-side cafe in the lobby was my most frequented place in the hotel. I loved having quality coffee available for me downstairs every morning before we embarked on our adventures for the day. The staff again were so nice. I was also super impressed with all the very cute souvenirs they had available for sale for both Wayfinder and B-side. These included T-shirts, bucket hats, baseball caps, tote bags, cooler bags, mugs, water canteens, stickers, and onesies for babies. I knew I had to bring several things back for my loved ones and I was glad to have souvenirs that were not cheaply made or stereotypical.
When we were not at the beach, we found the nearby pool to be a great alternative. The pool is on the smaller side due to the lower capacity of the hotel when compared to some of the bigger ones nearby, so you might have to get down early to grab a lounge chair if the pool is your plan for the day. Later in the day, the crowd starts to clear out and you are more likely to find a good spot and some quiet time in the pool or jacuzzi. We also ordered some of the cocktails and small bites available to order poolside and were really pleasantly surprised with what we ordered. We got Vietnamese-style chicken wings and mini corn dogs inspired by elote which totally fulfilled our snack cravings when we spent time at the pool. The bartender at the poolside bar was also super nice and friendly. Next to the pool, there is free sunscreen, aloe vera, iced tea, and beach towels available for use.
We ate at the Redfish restaurant located in the hotel which was so convenient because it was actually on my list of recommendations from a close friend. We enjoyed the okonomiyaki fries! I had a poke bowl called the "Seoul Bowl" (aka Korean-inspired) which was super fresh and delicious. My partner had the kalua pork fried-rice which was a little bland. Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Redfish and were glad that it was conveniently located within the hotel.
Phew, okay. This took me a long time to write, but I was glad to do so because our experience at Wayfinder was so amazing that I felt the need to share. Wayfinder is not the right choice for everyone, but I hope that this review helps people understand what the experience at Wayfinder is like with hopes that you too can enjoy a similarly lovely vacation at an affordable price!!
