The 15 Best Things to Do in Lisbon

"This three-and-a-half hour walking tour gives travelers an off-the-beaten glimpse of the city. (It’s a public walking tour, so make sure to reserve in advance.) The guides have an easy-breezy approach that make it seem like you’re being shown around by a friend—expect a good mix of historical, cultural, and, even political info peppered with personal storytelling. Overall, it’s best for people who would rather learn about Lisbon’s modern-day narrative rather than its history or past. You get some of that history, of course, but this tour is meant to show you parts of the city that don’t often land on the mainstream tourist routes, even if you’re only a couple of blocks away." - Alia Akkam, Chadner Navarro

We Hate Tourism Tours: Walk in the Real City — Tour Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out. What’s the big picture here? This three-and-a-half hour walking tour begins at Nossa Senhora do Monte and gives travelers an off-the-beaten glimpse of the city. It’s a public walking tour (of no more than six people) that you should definitely reserve in advance. Tell us about your fellow tourees. It’s a pretty broad group. And it’s Lisbon, so someone with mobility issues will definitely struggle with these hills. How are the guides? The guide was great. His delivery was very casual; he made us feel like we were being shown around by a friend rather than guide. His approach was easy-breezy and anecdotal so we were getting a good mix of historical, cultural, and, even political info that was peppered with personal storytelling. Anything you’ll be remembering weeks or months or years from now? It was a fun tour that was almost accidentally educational. Unlike other tours that might feel heavy-handed with facts, this one had a mellow vibe that made it feel like you were learning about Lisbon through a local’s experience of living there. So: money, time—how can we make the most of both? I think it’s best for people who would rather learn about Lisbon’s modern-day narrative rather than its history or past. You get some of that history, of course, but this tour is meant to show you parts of the city that don’t often land on the mainstream tourist routes, even if you’re only a couple of blocks away. The stories on this tour focus on a different side of Lisbon so that you can still learn about it while always alleviating some of the tourist pressure from the heavily trafficked parts of it." - Chadner Navarro

Pirates of the Cruise Ship Tour: Our tour of Lisbon was fantastic! Nuno was a wealth of knowledge and we learned so much about Portugal’s history, culture and people! I highly recommend this personal tour!!! We saw some incredible places in Lisbon from the city, the mountains and to the beautiful coastline! Really want to go back to Portugal and spend more time!!! Just awesome!!!

Google
Our tour guide, David, is a star. His story on Lisbon was told in such fluidity that I was engrossed in it from the beginning till the end. You just know it's not scripted, but rather from his deep love of this beautiful city. Thank you, We Hate Tourism.

I’m so glad I found your company. Booking was easy and Nuno made the Sintra trip educational and fun. The 6 of us loved having everything taken care of. The next day we had the morning free before our cruise departed in the afternoon and Joao (we gave up trying to pronounce it correctly) took us to some scenic spots (a few we would never have seen on our own in such a short time) and shared a lot of interesting history and fun facts. I highly recommend these guys for a great time.

Google
We enjoyed every moment with Joao. Lots of great stories and history and stories on the way to Sintra, excellent suggestions while we were in town and a wise choice in terms of the castle to visit (because I hate lineups). Lunch was memorable and the afternoon stops at Cape Rock and Cascais great too. Thanks for the suggestion to get dropped off at Bellam to explore the sites there. Highly recommended.

Google
This was the best walking tour we have ever done. David was extremely proud of Lisbon and did a wonderful job of explaining all of the history and the modern culture behind this incredible city. He went above and beyond with me and my wife, as we were the only two in the tour that day I could not believe how much information he had and how he showed us the real parts of the city that most tourists never get a chance to see. Thank you David for the great experience!

Google
We had a fantastic, informative, relaxing & chilled day with Nuno. First stop the original Pastel de Nata shop. Then a beautiful drive to Sintra and a walk around the town. We explored a lovely garden & Palace, then onto Cascais for another beautiful view & lovely lunch. Couple of drinks & on the road to home. Thank you Nuno & We hate tourism tours x

Google
We had a wonderful time in Sintra and Cascais with Nuno, our new friend!😄He showed us some beautiful places, told us a lot about real life in Portugal and Portugal's history, took us to a great place in the mountains for lunch, and took our age and the diminished mobility of my husband into account! It really was a personal, tailor made trip. Thanks again Nuno!

Google
We had an excellent experience with We Hate Tourism Tours during our visit to Sintra and Cascais in late July. Our guide, Nuno, was fantastic—knowledgeable, engaging, and fun to spend the day with. The tour was thoughtfully designed to make the most of travel time, giving us the chance to chat about each location, Lisbon’s history, the current political climate, and how tourism impacts the local economy. The small group format made the experience feel personal and relaxed, with plenty of opportunities for questions and conversation. It never felt scripted like a typical tour. We especially loved visiting their chosen palace in Sintra—it truly felt like we had the palace and grounds to ourselves, which is no small feat in summer! Cascais provided the perfect beachside contrast, and Nuna’s recommendation for a seafood lunch was exactly what we were hoping for. Highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a unique and meaningful way to experience Sintra and Cascais.

Yelp
We loved our tour to Sintra and Cascais, highly recommend! João was such a great guide! He was engaging and warm and enhanced our understanding of Portuguese culture and history.

Yelp
Online booking was smooth. Communication and instructions were clear. Expectations were met. Requests and whims were accommodated. What else can you ask for? Friendship. Unexpected, surprising, meaningful. Mano, you are truly a treat.

Yelp
Wonderful, amazing and irreverent tour guides and company. My wife and I did 2 separate tours, half day of Lisbon and full day of Sintra, Cascais and surrounding areas. Manuel for Lisbon and Joao for Sintra were each terrific, considerate, fun, highly educated, well informed and very independent thinkers!

Lorraine C.

Yelp
This was one of the best walking tours ever!!! David was wonderful - well informed and very entertaining. We saw sights I'm sure most tourists do not see!! I highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Visiting Lisbon? Want to see the sights and neighboring towns? Indulge in all kinds of local food? Short on time? NO WORRIES!!! The guys at We Hate Tourism Tours(crazy name right?)will take care of you! No, SERIOUSLY...While they offer all sorts of tours around town to suit your needs, the one I strongly suggest is The X-Day Trip to Sintra and Cascais...Why? It's only 57 euros per person The tour will literally last the entire day You have a local personal tour guide They'll do all the driving for you Very great deal overall. We met up with fellow travelers (pick up point assigned when you book your tour) at about 9am. Wanting to see the Quinta da Regalera, we split up into groups (the majority wanted to see Pena Palace) We set out for Sintra with our tour guide Miguel who was very funny and personable giving us a crash course on the history and culture of Portugal and answering any/all questions we could possibly have. Our day went as follows: Tour the town of Sintra(shopping, local landmarks, taste local specialities on your own) Spend time at Quinta da Regaleira Stop at a roadside market for lunch-SO GOOD! Spend time at Cabo da Roca Tour the town of Cascais-"Little Monaco" (Shopping, sightseeing, taste local specialities on your own) Drive back to Lisbon (at about 5pm) You will have more than enough time at each stop...Miguel would drop us off at each stop, offer suggestions on where to go, or places to try, then give us a meeting spot to be picked up for our next destination. Arriving back in Lisbon, Miguel was nice enough to send us off with a map covering all the places we went to and a shot of Ginja(local cherry liqueur) and even dinner suggestions as we were dropped off in the center of Lisbon where there were many great options. Great day, fun times, and I would absolutely do it all over again with We Hate Tourism Tours. ALOHA!!! Shaka Meter: \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ 5

Yelp
Cannot say enough great things about this company! Professional, insightful, communicative, and super fun. This was my 2nd tour with WHTT, the first was in Lisbon in 2012 and most recent was in Porto in 2023. WHTT skips the boring touristy stuff and the long lines and takes you to the coolest parts of the city that often go overlooked! The tour guides are incredibly cool and know a great deal of the history of the country and how it shaped the city you see today. They give a ton of great little details that make you really appreciate the city in a new light. Bruno and Mannu were great hosts in Porto, and asked us what types of things we were interested in seeing/doing, and also what we wanted to avoid. Pro tip: book a tour with WHTT early on in your trip, because there are definitely places worth taking an extra visit after the tour is over. Muito obrigado Bruno e Mannu!

Yelp
We had the best walking tour with Teresa! She was enjoyable to be around and showed us some truly amazing spots around Porto. It was one of my favorite things we did on this trip. If you want to eat some good food and drink some good wine 10/10 recommend we hate tourism.

Yelp
What a great Lisbon tour!! Nuno, our guide, was soooo pleasant, funny and knowledgeable. We learned so much and had a ton of fun. What could be better?! We saw, and learned about all the main attractions but also went off the beaten path to really see and get a sense of what it is like to live, and even have grown up, in Lisbon. It made all the lessons on history, architecture, food, culture, etc come to life. Have already recommended this tour to friends!!

Yelp
Exceeded all expectations! Review of We Hate Tourism Tours Pending review We booked a tour in 2017 with We Hate Tourism...we had the best time ever, so we booked 3 more tours! We had the best time, Marta really helped us out with planning all the little details of our trip. I told her what we wanted to do and she came up with a very affordable itinerary! She came up with a car seat for the baby and so many other details that made our trip stress free! We just did a wine tour in the Douro Valley out of Porto. Nelson was the guide and he took us to MÃOS E IRMÃOS. We sat around a huge family dining table while they served us a home cooked meal and plenty of delicious wine! The food was excellent, the hosts were excellent and the experience far exceeded my expectations! This will be forever my favorite tour! Paulo was our tour guide in Lisboa, he also exceeded all our expectations! He was so sweet and kind. He actually bought the baby a small talking toy to help her learn Portuguese! Both of these guides were more than generous with their humor, kindness and time. None of the tours ended "on time', they both acted like we were old friends coming to see them in Portugal, they acted like they had nothing better to do then hang out with us. I can't say enough about We Hate Tourism tours! If we go back to Portugal (hopefully) there is no doubt they will be the first I will call to help arrange our tours

Yelp
We did the King of the Hill Jeep Tour. No better way to travel through the hills of Lisbon than in an open air Jeep. Miguel, our passionate guide shared stories and the history of Lisbon as we toured. Fun way to see the city!

Yelp
I found out about "We Hate Tourism Tours" through a friend who had recently visited Lisbon and they had nothing but great things to say about the tour (X-DAY TRIP SINTRA CASCAIS) they took so, naturally I booked one too! If you want the full scoop on the tour, I pulled this from their site - "The main purpose of this experience is to create the best scenery possible for your stay in Lisbon, while taking you for a day where we'll get out of the city exploring the areas around Lisbon, like Sintra, a Unesco World Heritage Site and it's fairy-tale-setting. We'll take you to our favourite palace (not Pena Palace - we would spend the whole day there and see nothing else), the awe-inspiring viewpoint at Cabo da Roca, the most western point of Continental Europe, the beach town of Cascais, and one of the best and unexpected hidden views in Lisbon to finish the day, making you feel more alive than ever." Our tour guide was Nuno and he was an absolute legend. Super friendly, knowledgable and plays a mean mandolin. He drove us around from 8:30am to 4:30pm in the volkswagon van and provided such enlightening information about Lisbon and the surrounding areas. My favorite part of the day was standing on the most western part of continental Europe at Cabo da Roca. There was a beautiful breeze and just pretty cool to say that I've been there. Check these peeps out because they are unconventionally cool!

Yelp
I wish we could award more than 5 stars -- if you are considering booking a tour, do it! Our tour with Nuno from We Hate Tourism Tours genuinely was a highlight of our trip! Nuno was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and adapted the tour based on our interests and to avoid places that we had already explored in our time in Portugal. It's clear that he loves what he does. From the initial booking process to requesting an adjustment due to weather, the process was seamless and simple. Everyone we interacted with via email or in person was so kind, and we are already plotting our return trip to Portugal and can't wait to book with WHT again!

Richard W.

Yelp
Super informative 4-hour walking tour with Nuno through some of the most interesting and historical neighborhoods of Lisbon. He introduced us to people, places and events and brought the city to life in a unique way. He is a delightful guide and even offered personal suggestions and recommendations for how to spend the rest of our time in Lisbon. Five-star all the way!

Yelp
Our X-Day Trip with We Hate Tourism Tours (WHTT) was a highlight of a two-week vacation through Portugal and Spain filled with standout experiences. My husband and I are not generally tour group types. We prefer to spend our time wandering through cities and getting to know the nooks and crannies of neighborhoods more than piling into a giant bus and checking off a list of sights to see. Because our time in Lisbon was somewhat limited and we wanted to explore a few spots outside of town without renting a car, we looked into day trip options. I am so glad that we pulled the trigger and booked with WHTT. We were picked-up at Rossio Square at 9am and dropped off in Chiado a little after 5pm. We spent the day with a charming local guide named Tiago and six other visitors in a comfy mini-van. It felt like a group of friends heading out for an adventure moreso than a formal tour. Tiago shared key bits of history and pointed out important buildings, but he also opened it up to any questions we had. We discussed Portuguese culture, economy, government, education, food, entertainment...you name it, we talked about it... As for the tour itself, we made stops in Sintra for shopping, queijada pastries and ginjinha shots, La Quinta da Regaleira for 90 minutes of roaming the eerily gorgeous grounds, Cabo da Roca (the westernmost point in continental Europe) for breathtaking views and a casual lunch prepared by Tiago (bread, chorizo, cheese, chips, tomatoes, strawberries, and two bottles of red wine!), Guincho Beach for a wander along the water and a digestif, the seaside town of Cascais for exploring and gelato, and Belem for the monastery and pasteis de belem. Notice a theme? Yes, we grazed and sipped throughout the day! What I really appreciated was that Tiago would give us time in each place to explore on our own before clambering back into the van. We could go at our own pace and based on our own interests, which was awesome. WHTT offers several different tours, including Lisbon-focused itineraries. I cannot recommend them highly enough. So informative and so much fun!

Yelp
What a great experience. At first I was a little skeptical about this outfit... I mean, I get what they are going for with the name: "We're different! We're quirky! Check us out!" .... but it almost felt forced to me and I wasn't sure what to expect. A different side of Lisbon is definitely what we got. Our guide, Rodrigo, took us around town as if we were just old friends of his. We sent to a really non-descript but great restaurant that he said he grew up going to - no tourists in sight. He busted out some beers from the trunk and we all had a drink while we looked down on the city from a great viewpoint. Not great beer, but cool experience. And last but not least, we had pasteis and port (again from the trunk of the van) while watching night fall on the tower of Belem. Great, one of a kind experience, and there is no better way to see Lisbon. Check them out in Porto too (we did not, but I'd expect their tours here are great, too)

Yelp
What a marvelous evening! Our driver/tour guide Joao was spot on with historical info--we did the dinner event and couldn't have been more pleased ! These folks make Lisbon hum!!!! What a fun and lovely evening!!!!

Bobbie G.

Yelp
Probably the BEST tour we've ever taken. We've traveled a lot and are not big organized, large scale tour lovers. I saw this company recommended somewhere and was hooked by their name. Having a Lisbon native as a tour guide was terrific....and he was adorable, too. You won't go wrong with this company.

Barbara D.

Yelp
This was our best tour ever! My husband and I both loved it. Our guide was so friendly & knowledgeable. Felt like old friends immediately. We took the Pirate Tour which is designed for cruise ship travelers to make the most of your brief time in port. Instead of your usual guided tour it felt like we were just "hanging out" for the day. Wish we had been in Lisbon longer.

Tara L.

Yelp
Awesome group! I can't say enough about the X-Day trip. I was paired with two other German couples who were very nice so it made the tour even better. At each stop along the way we would see the big tour buses filled with old people coming in as we were leaving. Having a small group works so much better! I'm not one of those people who needs tons of time to explore place. I see it, I move on. This was great for that but I also think we were given plenty of time and I never felt rushed. It was the perfect way to see the things outside of Lisbon and decide if I wanted to go back and see more (Cascais yes, Sintra not so much). Please book this group if you're in Lisbon!

Sherry W.

Yelp
We had a great time with Manuel on our tour of Sintra and Cascais. Fun, relaxing, well paced ( we were the old couple) and great food. He's got a great sense of humor along with immense knowledge of Lisbon. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Silvia P.

Yelp
What a great tour to Sintra! My friend recommended these guys and they were awesome. They take you off the beaten path a little so you get a taste of the local flavor. Miguel and Alex were so much fun. Truly recommend this company.
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
The best tour I've ever been on! Perfect size group and everyone in our tour was great as well (similar minded travelers). Our guide was wonderful, from knowledge on history to perspective on culture and changes in the city. I had been a little nervous signing up for a tour where you would be inside a van but when you realize how much land is covered it makes sense! And we did take some stops where we were able to get out and explore and not feel rushed. There was never a "the time is... Be back at exactly...!" The timing and pace was perfect.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Wow! I was taking a solo trip to Lisbon and looking for a casual, but informative and interesting tour where I wouldn't be swallowed up in a group of tourists. This did the trick! Our guide Toby expertly steered through Lisbon's crazy traffic and narrow streets to show us views just outside the city in Sintra, Cascais and other suburban areas on an all-day tour, complete with lunch (including wine) and stops in hidden gems like a mausoleum cemetery, ice cream parlor, the Westernmost point in continental Europe and more. He bought us little pastries and served us homemade cherry liqueur. I loved being able to talk with a local, learn about the lesser-known parts of the area, and have an easy, convenient, safe chauffeur. Toby even offered to provide any and all recommendations on restaurants and other attractions for us to check out on the remainder of our time in Lisbon. I would highly recommend booking with WHTT and be confident it is money well spent.

Yelp
We LOVED our tour with We HATE Tourism! If you want to do a day trip to Sintra (and you should if you are in Lisbon) then this is the way to do it. Our guide Miguel was funny, sarcastic, and gave us wonderful history of his town. He picked us up in a van in Rossio square and we were were on our way to Sintra. There were 8 of us on the tour. And, it was fun meeting and talking to everyone in the small group. It was just the right size. Plus Sintra's streets are small and hilly, so a van (versus bus) is the best way to experience the town. Sintra is beautiful and the Quinta da Regaleira is definitely the place to see! The castle is so-so but the grounds are beautiful. Trails lead to waterfalls, lookouts, a huge well, and underground tunnels. From there we drove around the town a little more and then had a wonderful lunch at a local farmer's market. I am still dreaming of the homemade bread filled with chorizo and the mandarin oranges we ate. So flavorful. From there we visited Cabo de Roca and Cascais and then were brought back to Lisbon. Highly recommend this tour if you are in Lisbon. And, if we are ever back I definitely want to check out one of their food tours!

Catherine P.

Yelp
I LOVED this tour to Sintra with Joao!! I was on a solo trip to Portugal and it was a fun and easy way to do a day trip from Lisbon. Joao could not have been more fun, warm and knowledgeable and gave us a very memorable day. Sintra and Cascais are beautiful and definitely worth seeing and getting to the coast was an added bonus. I can't say enough about this tour!

Judy S.

Yelp
We did a "dinner with us" tour and were lucky enough to have a private tour (off-season) with Marcos. Everything was as advertised and more. Marcos was so much fun, took us to an "off the beaten track" restaurant and we had a great meal (not the traditional cod stuff) and laughed and laughed. Then Marcos took us to some of the local sites that tourist don't visit and they were fabulous. We wouldn't hesitate to take another opportunity to hang with folks from this non-tourism tour company. We very much wanted to do the lunch, but it wasn't available while we were in Lisbon. We will be baaaack! Judy S.

Yelp
Sept 2015 ..... I chose this firm because (a) internet descriptions implied uniquely local experiences ,,, and the internet was totally correct and (b) any questions I asked regarding their tours or Lisbon in general were responded to very quickly and professionally (thank you Marta) . We (6 adults) took the X-day trip and the Dinner with Us or Starve. The X-day trip was great ... we saw what was advertised, but with a tailored, personalized flair ... it was a perfect day outing. The Dinner tour was one of the best, most memorable travel/food experiences my family has ever had. The restaurant (Lucimar) was perfect, the food was fantastic, the drive to different sltes in the city and Belem was informative and entertaining. Many thank-yous to our guide that night ... Goncalo.
