30 Places to Go Deep in the Art of Texas

"Born in Waxahatchie, Texas, in 1987, the Webb Gallery is known for specializing in outsider art and the artifacts of secret societies. The collection, which overflows with curiosities, has gained an international following because of the strength behind its curation and its personality. “What started as a passion/obsession for old handmade items such as painted or repaired objects, fraternal lodge items, carnival banners, tramp art, memory jugs, quilts, and just killer oddball stuff became a continuous quest for the unusual,” is how the the Webb Gallery’s official website explains its early beginning. “The Webbs have been crisscrossing Texas, the South, the Midwest and just about any hole in the wall across the country in search of the miraculous for more than a decade.” Those travels have turned up an amazing collection of goods. Bruce and his wife amassed so much stuff that they started curating exhibits in school, universities, and museums around the country while also lecturing on what they learned during their exploration. The Webb Gallery is now housed in a 10,000-square-foot building 30 miles south of Dallas that’s hard to miss because of its cast iron front. In addition to hosting the Webb’s current collection of art, the center hosts events, musical performances, speakers, and more." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Wonderful folk art, Fraternal lodge artwork, and carnival banners. Check out their book "As Above, So Below: Art of the American Fraternal Society" for a pictorial and written description of secret societies.

Loved the place. Too bad we were in a hurry, otherwise would have stayed a little longer.

This gallery is conveniently located near the square in downtown waxahachie. the folks there could not be friendlier, and the artwork is absolutely amazing. a nice broad selection, and their special shows are always terrific. it's definitely worth checking out, enjoying their mailing list because you never know when you'll see something you really like. It's the best kind of eclectic gallery, with a little something for everyone.

We were reticent to art shop during COVID, but shopping by appointment was easy and enjoyable. The owners have had this gallery 30ish years and speak of their artists like beloved relatives. We are so happy with our piece from Mark Kuhn.

The Webb Gallery is magical. Julie and Bruce instantly felt like old friends, and I don't make friends easily. Currently open by appointment only. I can't recommend it enough.

Yelp
How I wish there were more than five stars. In town visiting family from Wisconsin, Julie graciously allowed me to come into their gallery/shop Monday afternoon to look around. I have very rarely had such a good experience. She was insanely knowledgable about every item in the room, made me feel 100% welcomed, and had me not wanting to leave. I cannot wait to visit again.

Yelp
I don't know how I ended up at Webb Gallery during a time when it was actually open. When my wife and I rolled into Waxahachie late one Saturday afternoon and found nearly everything closed, we had no idea that we were walking into Webb Gallery during one of the only times all week when it isn't. The first thing you're likely to notice here is the dog. I hope you like playing with dogs, because the little black Boston terrier in this place is going to bring you toys and expect you to throw them. His little black body is going to blast and shake his way back and forth across the room the entire time you're there. He cares not for art. He cares for play. If you're at all like me, once you managed to lure the hyper little dog close enough to a wall to actually look at the art, you're going to be delighted. I've gone to contemporary art museums, trying to make myself a better person in some way, and spent the whole time trying to understand... anything... really. I read information about the artists and what they're trying to portray, and my brain makes a noise like "buh" and shuts down. Here, though, the art is simply delightful. When we went, there were sideshow posters and paintings like old tattoos. There were small pieces based on elaborate displays of bad puns and large moving displays made of toothpicks. There was cute jewelry like the silver necklace my wife bought with the pendant that just says "blah blah blah." Everything is fun and whimsical and punctuated by the excited grunts of a tiny dog dropping a Gumby toy at your feet. The owners seemed very happy to discuss any of the pieces with us, and knew all about the artists who had created the art. I think they stayed open longer just because we walked in when we did, and at no point did we seem rushed to get out. We felt very welcome and enjoyed every minute of our visit to Webb Gallery. If I ever find myself in the area on a slow weekend afternoon again, I will certainly be stopping in to see what's in their gallery next.

Yelp
What a cool little gallery. It's too bad that I always go on a day that they aren't open. I never want to call and make an appointment while standing in the window fogging up the glass. You see, without an appointment, they are only open from 1-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. I just saw on their website that they have items on display at Uncommon Objects in Austin as well as Dolly Python in Dallas. The site also shows a number of their artists with samples of the work. Whenever I have looked in the window, I see an eclectic combination of folk art, big top oddities, Elvis gear, local art and miscellany. On my drive tomorrow, I might call to make an appointment. If not, I will certainly stop by on the way back this Sunday. Expect an udpate shortly...

Yelp
Really enjoyed the collection but truly loved getting a chance to sit down with the owners. They were incredibly friendly and informative and apparently they get new and cool stuff all the time. Next time I'm in Texas, I will definitely be stopping back around again.
