Weeke Barton, Dartmoor, Devon, UK - Explore & Book

"When Jo and Sam swapped their hectic London life for the wilds of Dartmoor, they set about opening the hip yet homely rural retreat they’d always dreamt of – the kind of place where guests can kick off their shoes and unwind. You’d expect a former Conran restaurant manager and a graphic designer from Hackney to know about hospitality and cool, and they’ve certainly created a winning formula: stylish interiors, total tranquility and a refreshingly laid-back vibe. The building – almost 500 years old and rumoured by locals to be the longest longhouse in Devon – is delightfully quirky, with ancient nooks and spiral staircases offset by sleek urban furniture and contemporary art. The six bedrooms have beamed ceilings, deliciously comfy beds and sheepskin-covered window seats; one has a dreamy double-ended bathtub. Downstairs, Jo’s excellent home cooking is just the ticket after a day's walking, and there's a very cosy bar with an honesty system. Perfect for stressed-out city folk who need a countryside fix; you can even bring your dog. Highs Glorious landscapes and views, and plenty to do nearby: moorland walks or bike rides, horse riding, historic houses Plus an enormous garden and a cosy lounge with DVDs, for those who want to do nothing at all Delicious food, with lots of local treats: Devon sausages at breakfast, wild venison for dinner, meat pies, bio-dynamic wines and local ales Book the whole house for a large family or small group getaway, catered or self-catered (a 2-night minimum) Surprisingly easy to reach given its remoteness: 20 mins' drive from Exeter (which is 2 hrs by train from London) Lows When booking B&B, you'll need to pre-order picnic lunch packs; no lunch is served on the premises No TV signal, but there's a flatscreen for watching DVDs Over Christmas and New Year, Weeke Barton is only available on a self-catered whole-house basis Only Henry's room can be a twin The low, beamed ceilings might mean tall guests need to crouch a bit" - Abi Dare

We had the most amazing time staying at Weeke Barton! The hosts were so thoughtful and welcoming and the breakfasts were delicious. We also had the pie and apple crumble on Friday evening, which was incredible. The room was cosy and lovely, and the bed was super comfortable. It’s such a peaceful, stylish place to stay. They gave us some fantastic recommendations too- there’s a lovely vineyard nearby, plus loads of beautiful moor and coastal walks. Wish we had a few more days!

What a wonderful find! The owners were so friendly and accommodating, and the hotel, room, grounds and breakfast were gorgeous. There were so many nice little touches such as the honesty bar and you could also help yourself to milk/water whenever you need. We stayed in the Kota room, which was a perfect hide away, we loved the bath, wood burner and projector screen..the pictures don't do it justice. I cannot recommend this hotel enough and we will 100% be returning guests. It's great to see an independent hotel doing so well!

We had a lovely stay at Weeke Barton. The owners were particularly welcoming from the get go where we were given a tour and any questions we had answered. Our room was clean and our bed was incredibly comfy. Shower was powerful. We loved the little touches like the honesty bar, DVD library and text system for ordering breakfast - which was delicious. We stayed on a weekend with a big separate wedding party which did make it quite noisy at times through the doors/ walls as it is a proper house set up, but that is no fault of the owner. Would definitely recommend this lovely and quirky guest house to others.

Lovely site - the garden was ideal for lazing on a sunny day. The house is fascinating architecturally (like many old houses it's not so easy if you aren't fairly agile). Given that this isn't a cheap place to stay, I thought breakfast could have been more generous - perhaps another slice of toast/piece of bacon? Still, a warm welcome and good experience.

It is simply wonderful. It's like travelling back in time, all in perfect comfort, with brilliant style.Jo is an excellent host and the buttered toast is phenomenal. Oh, and a homemade gin and tonic is a must. We have never seen such a fantastic venue

We stopped off at Weekes Barton on the way to South Cornwall from London. We arrived late at around 10pm but got a warm welcome from Sam. The most incredible sleep in ‘Henry’ was had that night, so much so I took notes of the mattress and bed linen. Breakfast was a hearty affair with an absolutely lovely Jo feeding us. Then a long picturesque walk through flowering wild garlic and bluebells worked some of it off. Our dogs were welcomed even if they aren’t the best behaved ! My only complaint is I wish we could have stayed longer, rather than using as just a resting place on the way to our final destination. We will be back.

Beautiful view, lovely room and great breakfast to start the day for walks on Dartmoor. We stayed for two nights and Sam and Jo were very helpful and informative about the surrounding area. Dogs are welcomed as well.
