Yelp
This casual restaurant, conveniently located in the heart of Hackesher Markt, aims to bring the Alps to Berlin by serving Tirolian specialties and beer from the Bavarian State Brewery, Weihenstephan. Despite this heartwarming concept, I found it a completely mediocre place to get dinner.
I had the "Krustenschweinebraten," which is pork roast with crackling in dark beer sauce, with potato dumplings and bacon coleslaw. Although the portion was huge, especially for the price (€13), everything was super salty, and I was gulping down my beer by the end. Although the pork was perfectly tender, the potato dumplings were the worst I've encountered in Germany: they were weirdly gummy and completely tasteless. I hardly wanted to use them to swab up the tasty beer sauce because they were such a waste of chewing. Maybe the "Schweins´hax´n" (pork knuckle in brown ale sauce on pickled cabbage with potato dumplings) would have been a better choice?
They had Spätzle as a special, and I would recommend that if they have it--especially if you're tired of being barraged by meat. The Spätzle came with a refreshing sauté of onions, spinach, and tomatoes, but unfortunately this dish was again a bit salty.
The charcuterie plate was quite comprehensive, and definitely worth the €13,90. I especially liked the addition of white radish on top.
Our waiter was prompt enough but rather withdrawn. Although the availability of English menus makes it easy to order, then you'll get hit with the pushy "Service is NOT INCLUDED" line on your receipt, so I guess it's a tradeoff.
Overall, I'm not convinced that this isn't a tourist trap. Yes, the beer is good, but where isn't it?
