"Before becoming a small tavern, this hole-in-the-wall spot served as a cooper’s workshop that made barrels for the local winemakers. Today, its modest confines have been made cozy with a few wooden tables (actually former workbenches), a smattering of candles, and old tools from the workshop. Its appeal lies not just in the convivial atmosphere that comes from being a family-run restaurant since 1992, or the fact that strangers eat in close quarters, but also in the hearty menu, which offers classic dishes from Baden and the Pfalz region like Schäufele (pickled and slightly smoked pork shoulder), Saumagen (sow’s stomach stuffed with meat and potatoes), schnitzel, and deliciously creamy Käsespätzle . The wines are also excellent, meaning Schnitzelbank is usually packed. Arrive early for a better chance at a table."

Weinstube Schnitzelbank — A Must-Visit in Heidelberg! Can’t believe how much difference arriving early can make! We arrived about 20 minutes before opening and saw a couple of groups already waiting outside. That was a clear sign this place is very popular. And indeed, once the doors opened at 5 pm, people poured in — within just 5 minutes, every table was occupied! The service was wonderful — the staff are super friendly and welcoming. We ordered bratwurst and garlic schnitzel, and both were amazing. Honestly, they tasted even better than what we had in Munich. The sauerkraut was superb, though the portion was quite large, so I couldn’t finish it. I wanted to try the tomato soup too, but it contains cream, so we skipped it. One thing to note: because the restaurant is small and very famous, you’ll likely have to share a table with other groups — which actually adds to the cozy atmosphere. I’d strongly recommend making a reservation by phone, as their email response asked us to call directly due to limited access to email. We parked at P1, which is a bit of a walk from the restaurant, so it’s worth checking for a closer parking option if possible. 👉 In short: be prepared, arrive early or reserve ahead if you want to enjoy this fantastic spot in Heidelberg! Total meal costs us 47 euro

My family visited this restaurant 9 years ago and had to stop back by while in Heidelberg. The restaurant has old world charm and the food is excellent. The seating is limited and the tables are shared with other diners. Show up early to get your pick of the tables and ensure there is room without a wait.

Very cozy wine bar with excellent schnitzel and Riesling on tap. Make sure to go hungry because the portions are sizable. The seating is communal due to limited space. Definitely recommend making a reservation.

Wow, what a great place, excellent service, excellent food and excellent ambience. A small restaurant, you'll be lucky to get in !!, you may have to join a large table or other people join your table, if that's not for u then don't come, but you'll be the loser for missing out on this gem of a restaurant. I've been to 192 countries and I would put my meal here into my top 10 of all time meals, it was that good !!

A cool little joint on the bust streets of Heidelberg. We were recommended to visit this restaurant by a local woman in the antique shop. Upon first entering it was loud and busy, we were seated at a shaded table with another group. Although this might be unusual, it absolutely made our trip, what a craic we had with a German business party and traveling American. All whilst sampling the best German schnitzel ever likely to pass your gullet. Staff were sound, would drink a beer with them.

Unbelievable food and service- indoor seating is shared tables and beautifully rustic. Outdoor sidewalk seating as well. The schnitzel is obviously the go to here. I went with schnitzel stuffed with blue cheese/ ham and it was ridiculously good. My wife got hers with mushroom gravy and my son got his garlic schnitzel. Both loved them! Service was awesome and the only reason atmosphere is 4 stars is it is hot inside- but no/frills perfect!

Outstanding food and service! Add this restaurant to your must have places to eat. Seriously, stop what you are doing and make a reservation! The traditional German food (we got the schnitzel with mushrooms and cream sauce),was authentic and delicious, and the service was the best we've had in months. Highly, highly recommended.

Our first meal in Germany and honestly the best!! We had such an amazing time here. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, we absolutely loved the couple we ended up sharing a table with and the food was insane. The schnitzel was the best I had in Germany! Absolutely recommend
