Tim Howard's 11 Music and Food Destinations to Fuel the Soul

"Recording studios practically litter the Nashville landscape, from historic Music Row spots to newcomers. Though it opened fairly recently, Welcome to 1979 is quintessential Music City, USA, a place where past and present meet. Opened in 2008 by Chris and Yoli Mara in a warehouse that was once a record pressing plant, Welcome to 1979 pairs vintage gear with modern recording equipment. Coupled with warm, wood-paneled decor, the studio gives off a laid-back retro vibe, the perfect situation for creative inspiration. The studio’s clients include acts like Jason Isbell, The Who’s Pete Townshend, and the late legend John Prine. Their unique approach has reeled in music’s best while offering services to anyone who wants to record the songs they carry with them. Besides recording services, the 13,000-square-foot facility also boasts mastering, vinyl production, and analog to digital transfer services, too, for even the most intense music obsessive. But even if you’re not looking to lay down tracks, the studio still has plenty of reasons to arrange a visit. Every November, the studio offers a recording summit giving guests the chance to see the record-making process up close. From chats with artists and industry experts to mixing and mastering workshops, it’s a uniquely subversive experience. And twice a year the studio opens its doors to a handful of people for Tape Camp, a two-day workshop on analog recording." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I had an absolute blast tracking drums here last week. The facility is funky, fun and extremely comfortable and relaxed. The location is great and easily accessible. Most importantly the tracking process was effortless and the sounds were captured were massive! I’m excited to start planning future sessions with Chris, Garrett and the rest of the team.

A studio experience like no other. It is easy to believe that it’s the gear and the environment, …it is all that and so much more at Welcome to 1979. Yoli and Chris are at the center of a vibrant and resourceful network of creatives. Record here, attend conferences, public events like direct to disc. They said that this is the only place where you can track studio quality direct to vinyl, they are right about that, but this place is like no other for so many other wonderful reasons.

Recording at Welcome to 1979 and was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. I had my entire (amateur) family and multiple professional musicians in-and-out over two days and crew could not have been more accommodating. Chris and Yoli were extremely helpful on the front end and Andrew, Garrett, and Diego were easy going, insightful, and really made sure the whole operation was as smooth as could be. Highly recommend this place!

WOW! My name is Rey Montecristo. I have recorded at Criteria and Hit Factory in Miami, most of the legendary studios in Nashville and I am beyond thrilled I gave Welcome To 1979 a Spin for a 4 day weekend recording session and will be making it my go to studio. Two things make it unbeatable. The ability to record to 2 inch tape through that superb vintage console and then dump to Pro-Tools and of course the beyond awesome owners and staff. They truly gave our band Saints & Angels the Superstar treatment. Amazing one of a kind Studio!

The team at Welcome to 1979 (Chris especially) took a 40 year-old recording of my late father playing the piano and brought it back to life! I am so grateful, and I could not be happier with their services, knowledge, professionalism, quality, care, follow up, and kindness. Their location is easy to find as well. If you have any music transfer needs in Nashville, there is a reason they have all 5 star reviews! Thanks, guys!!

We did the tour experience here with our work group and it was awesome. I highly recommend it for any local or tourist looking for a true music experience. The owner has a great history here and a lot of good stories to share.

Went to the studio for their TapeCamp which was an incredible learning experience. Every member of the staff was a total pro, and extremely generous with their knowledge and insight. Chris and Yoli set up a wonderful flow for the weekend & the vibe in the place is "instant comfort" for pretty much anyone who's gonna walk in. Bobbi, the mastering engineer was a wealth of knowledge, and I know that I learned a ton + built up some real comfort with equipment that I don't normally get a chance to work on. Also, the place sounds great & has a supremely solid gear-list. If I was ready to record a project in Nashville, they'd be my first/only call.

1979 has been great ! They do quality work at a reasonable price. They are very knowledgeable with new technology and understanding of someone who is not. I like the fact that they are professional and very good at what they do. i have been using them for 3 years and I am satisfied. Kevin Coleman - producer-songwriter-composer and musician
