25 Best Zoos in the World

"Opened in 1906 as the nation’s first zoo, this suburban conservation site runs long-standing preservation programs and presents a mix of species from capybaras and chimpanzees to kangaroos and giraffes. Depending on rescue outcomes, visitors may spot native kiwi birds, and paid close-encounter packages let guests meet animals such as sun bears, red pandas, and snow leopards." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Wellington Zoo is a must-visit! Perfect for nature lovers and kids. Loved the variety of animals, beautiful surroundings, and informative rangers. Ticketing was smooth, and the facilities (restrooms, food options) were great. Highly recommend!

We did a Close Encounter with the ring tailed Lemurs and it was fantastic. Zoo entry was included with the close encounter which made it good value and gave that something special to the zoo. We also really enjoyed talking to one of the volunteers at the zoo. She was full of stories and fun facts about the animals.

Always nice to visit when in Wellington, ashame this time there where no big cats/bear visible and some things closed. Possibly due to time/date of visit. Had some amazing animals to see, huge giraffes. A nice place to take the kids.

I enjoyed my walk through this zoo, about 2 hours. I caught one feeding show among many throughout the day. The zoo keepers were very friendly and informative. I like the multiple toilet access with a couple stalls vs. one big washroom area near the entrance/exit like other zoos. Sad that a few cages have no animals at all unless it's feeding/show time.

Had a great time at Wellington Zoo! The place is clean, well-organised, and full of friendly staff. You get to see lions, red pandas, giraffes, and even native Kiwi birds 🐦. The enclosures are well-designed and animals look happy and active. Perfect for kids, families, or even just a chill day out. Nice food options too 🍔 and heaps of photo spots 📸.

Google
Wellington Zoo was a decent experience overall, but it didn’t quite meet expectations in a few areas. The zoo has a great variety of animals, and it’s clear the staff genuinely care about their well-being. The enclosures are clean and well-maintained, and we appreciated the educational signage and conservation messages throughout the park. That said, the experience felt a bit underwhelming. Some parts of the zoo seemed a little tired or in need of an update, and a few of the animals were hard to spot or not visible at all. It would have been nice to see more interactive elements or feeding sessions to make the visit more engaging, especially for kids. The layout can also be a bit confusing at times, with limited shaded areas or rest spots, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting on a sunny day. Overall, it’s a nice way to spend a few hours and support conservation, but we left feeling like there was room for improvement to really make it a standout experience.

Yelp
What an amazing experience! We booked the red panda experience, and on the day of, the weather was bad so they gave us the option to cancel, or to try any way. We tried anyway and we are so glad we did! We got to go into the red panda exhibit with a trainer. We not only got to feed, but also had the red pandas crawling all over us! We learned so much about them and got a ton of time with them in our laps! We also walked around the rest of the zoo. All of the animals were out where we could see them. All the enclosures looked clean and were good sizes. It seemed like a wonderful place and every staff member we came into contact with was so kind and helpful!

Yelp
This is super cool zoo with alot of local animals. Must see the nocturnal house for the Kiwi's! Took the bus here from the middle of the city which dropped us off right at the entrance. The admission price for an adult is $23. There's animal talks throughout the day which is interesting. My favorite thing here is the Australian (neighbor) portion of the zoo with Tasmanian devils, and kangaroos, as well as the very famous nocturnal kiwi. There's 3 of them living in the nocturnal house, one is the famous rescue kiwi with 1 leg. They are all super cute. They stomp around their pens very loudly like little dinosaurs. Love them so much! The zoo is well maintained and very clean. Lots of kids programs. The monkeys are really funny too. We had a great time!

Yelp
I accidentally scheduled an experience with the capybaras on the wrong date and was able to get a lemur experience day of. They were exceptional all around. Once in a life experience would recommend to everyone.

Yelp
An outstanding zoo that is just the right scale to bring a family. First, do not think about huge zoos like the one in San Diego. Think of a zoo that can be seen in a few hours with plenty of space. Of course, there are great spaces for New Zealand and Australian species. You would expect that. What is really wonderful are the spaces for families. There are many areas to take a break, engage with some tame animals, examine educational stuff and so on. I could see lots of people with kids -- but also many teenagers -- walking around and having a good time. There are play areas galore. A word of warning. Like everything in Wellington, there are a lot of hills. Make sure that you have your strong legs on! The only bad note is that parking can be tricky to find -- on the other hand -- it is free!! Street parking is limited. There is some parking at a city park around the side. If you keep going past the running track there are usually spots for parking. Expect a bit of a walk. But, it is Wellington, you were expecting that anyway.

Yelp
What a letdown! I don't know if I should have expected more in the capital city of New Zealand, but this was small, and only a few animals exhibits and settings. The layout is easy, as one takes a circular path throughout and around the zoo. There is a cafe on site, and a few picnic tables with covering. If you've been to zoos elsewhere, you can give this a pass.

Yelp
I loved this zoo. It's definitely on the smaller side, but almost all of the animals were visible and most seemed to have much more free space than a lot of zoos. There were some adorable animals; particular favorites include the sunbear lounging in his tree (he looked so relaxed, like he had no cares in the world), the giraffe that was right up against the fence eating leaves held out by people, and the baboons who actively engaged (albeit angrily) with those of us outside their enclosure. You might have needed to be there to appreciate the last one. The only disappointing thing when I went was the kiwis were mostly hiding in the dark, but the adorable one-legged rescue was visible. Overall, though, a great zoo that can be seen in a few hours!

Yelp
I loved this zoo! There are some complaints about the Wellington Zoo being too small, but honestly I would rather have a small zoo with happy, ethically raised animals, then a huge one that's an Animal Jail. The highlights here for me were the kiwis, otters, tiger (go for the tiger feeding!), and the Australian portion. The Australian portion is pretty open and we saw some species of Goose, Wallabies, and Kangaroo running around free. This was cool to see. Overall this was a very clean zoo and all the animals were treated well. It was a good learning experience for small kids as well - they have many educational programs, talks, and placards placed throughout the zoo. Price point of $17 for students is VERY reasonable.
