Vienna Travel Guide Resources & Trip Planning Info by Rick Steves

"This is four museums in one: an uncrowded collection of armor, musical instruments, ancient Greek statues, and ethnographic treasures in the elegant halls of a Habsburg palace." - RICKSTEVES

A very interesting museum that engages with the issue of broadly understood imperialism, while also showcasing the beauty of world cultures. The exhibitions are beautifully arranged, and the accompanying texts are insightful and professional. Very interesting current exhibitions! This time it was african artists instalation and history of the plants and pants! If you want to broaden your knowledge about the world, this is one of the places to visit. Highly recommended!

A fascinating journey through world cultures! The Weltmuseum Wien is one of the most impressive museums in Vienna. The exhibitions are beautifully curated, showcasing artifacts and stories from all around the world — from Asia and Africa to the Americas and Oceania. Each section feels like stepping into a different part of history and culture. The displays are modern, interactive, and very informative, making it easy to spend several hours exploring. The building itself, located in the Hofburg Palace, is stunning, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I especially enjoyed the collection of traditional clothing and musical instruments. A must-visit for anyone interested in anthropology, history, or global cultures!

Huge museum with many rooms and a lot of very interesting artifacts and exhibits. It was an impressive museum for the price, definitely worth it if you are interested in music or military historical artifacts. The best part was that they let people try some of the restored instruments like the harpsichords!

Google
Some very impressive collections on display with a good representation of different cultures. However, the lighting is unusually low in many rooms, seemingly irrespective of conservation concerns. The museum also dedicates too much space to apologizing for imperialism/colonialism and has replaced portions of some collections with contemporary, "souvenir" quality objects of lesser significance, presumably to avoid scrutiny.

This was a fun museum to experience. There is a music instrument section you can actually play on some. They also have some armor on display. Some nice history to read about and ponder about.

Royal rooms with beautiful presentation of objects collected by Austrian big shots and "researchers" during the last centuries, mostly art. Various special exhibits. The current ones, European islam and windows of colonialism are rather short and superficial. Great selection of old pianos but without being able to hear their sounds, half the fun. Great that they open till 21:00 on Tuesday

Beautiful building. Really nice personnel. Still to me a bit boring, exponents didn’t start excitement in me for some reason. Kids enjoyed the drawing Ecke the most.

One of the best museums I visited in Vienna. The armoury had an absolutely incredible collection or armour. The section on musical instruments was also fascinating.

Yelp
Amazing museum-the highlight must be the helmet and sword of Albanian historical figure , Skanderbeg (Gjergj Kastrioti ( c. 1405 - 17 January 1468)) who impressed me with his resolve to be who he truly was, with the sense of wisdom and loyalty unseen. I stood in awe in Vienna museum watching an original Skenderbeg armor and i felt reverent like a pilgrim, along with a group of Albanian women and men who could not leave the peace, taking the pictures and soaking every detail.

Yelp
I like this museum is the museum has a lot to see. It is worth a visit. This museum main display non European art and history. There are many art from Asia. This includes China and India. There are some display from the country I not even heard of. The display is very detail. Some collection is very unique and not normally seen. Such as use title shell as music instruments. There is a display of Latin art showing the multi house on top each with way of life. There is a African hand made straw item for Virgin Mary. Clothing that is colorful display. One thing surprising me is the display from my home country was as detail as I can imagine. It is great collection. The other chamber includes musical instruments throughout Europe. Some play famous people such as Mozart. The instruments display has huge collection with some of them very rare.

Yelp
The Welt Museum (World Museum) in Vienna has reopened this week after a couple of years of being renovated and reconceived. Sometimes with museums that reconceive and dispay anew their holdings, I wonder why they bother. But not in this case The new installations are a total wow! They truly highlight the quality of this important ethnographic and anthropological collection. Did you know that many of the most famous objects come from Archduke Franz Ferdinand's well-documented around-the-world voyage? Others originate from other Habsburgs travellers and Austrian researchers and explorers. Perhaps the spectacular Aztec green feather headdress is the most famous item on display here but I am sure you will find many others you might admire even more. Each one of the 14 galleries of the permanent collection is worth visiting and there will always be a changing exhibition on the ground floor. Well done Welt Museum!! Tip - Your ticket also allows you to view one of the world's largest Arms and Armory collection on the first floor. The highlights here are the Emperor Maximilian's personal armor..

Yelp
The now called "Weltmuseum" is a great international place where you can find really all kinds of cultural festivals, workshops (this weekend f.e. creating catrinas for dia de las muertas), people, (foto)exhibitions etc.besides the regular Museum exhibitions, which are also always worth seeing for all intercultural interessted people. It is very usefull to habe a regular check on the websites because they offer from real Argentinian tango course, over Indonesion figth art & danceperformance until dia de las muertas festival really a great portfolio of virouse things. The people are really nice and open and most of the time you get delicouse international food as well. Most of the times the festivals are free, sometimes combined with a regular entrance ticket and sometimes you have to pay (f.e. Tango classes cost 15€/day) Its also a great spot where you can take your kids!
