"People's Garden, West Harlem by Tracy Zhang. The West 111th Street People's Garden is just that - a piece of quiet greenery in an otherwise busy neighborhood. Looking at the space from the street, you'd never know there was a hidden park space behind it. But with the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine as backdrop, the garden carries an air of surreality."

This garden belongs to the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Dogs are not allowed in this garden. There are secuity guards that keep an eye on the garden. It is not open 24 hours. It is not called, "West 111th Street People's Garden" that is a community garden that is on the other side of Amsterdam Avenue.

This is mislabeled and is what is known as the Cathedral’s “garden close” or just referred to by the Cathedral as “The Close.” (Maybe that’s in keeping with Anglican lingo). This is NOT the West 111th Street People’s Garden. That garden is located at the corner of West 111th and Amsterdam Ave. across the street and is a NYC Green Thumb Community Garden first established by community activists in the 1970s. Also, a nice place to visit or volunteer!

Every Saturday Morning, there are people out there especially myself who donate their time to do some volunteer work inside the garden to do cleaning and raking grass leaves and planting next to the bushes for new flowers.

Amazing little unknown spot in Manhattan. Great for kids with the nearby Cathedral and peacocks (look for them behind the cathedral).

A beautiful open space garden with fantastic views of the Cathedral and 3 resident peacocks (2 blue and one white)

Yelp
Rare that you find a garden that has a New York Times article about it (https://nyti.ms/2sf11a9). This is an interesting, albeit slightly "raggedly planted," respite in Morningside Heights from the obsessively manicured lawns of Columbia and bustle of its larger siblings Morningside and Riverside Parks nearby. Note: the other reviewer seems to have mixed it up with the green space opposite this one, across Amsterdam and also wonderful, that is maintained by The Cathedral Church. This lot, owned by the Parks Department, is a completely separate affair.
