On the Grid : West Coast BBQ

"West Coast BBQ has the best BBQ food in La Mesa and probably the most extensive local craft beer selection. Located in a generic strip mall, don’t let appearances be deceiving, this place is for the serious foodie. The pulled pork is to die for and their insane garlic fries will inform those closest to you (or within a 20 foot radius) what you ate for about a week (not kidding)." - Caava Design

The servers were great 😊, very helpful. We tried the Nachos definitely a must try. I wanted to try the recommended sandwiches but we were just there for a quick round of drinks. It was a light afternoon, so lots of seats for whoever wants to enjoy the place. I would go again in the future. If you guys want to try some BBQ flavor and beer 🍻 go visit this place. ☺️

I appreciate this neighborhood bar. The beer selection is very good, its really what brought me here. The food options are also pretty decent. It's not going to he a super fancy place but it has character. The wall art is pretty interesting.

A friend introduced me to this place and I am so glad she did! It has a great and comfortable atmosphere with bar/table/outdoor seating. Dogs welcome and treats provided for the furry customers. They also have lots of beer on tap including this one amazing tangerine wheat beer which I loved and will go back for. The service was exceptional and so was the food. Very fresh and large portions! Overall this place is wonderful and I can't wait to go back and invite others to join me!

I’m loving the new updated menu. The pozole is OMG so delicious! Staff was super nice and the selection of craft beers were thumbs up. The food really did impress me. Top food items I loved were the Pozole, Reuben ( they pickled the Brussels sprouts) and the banana bread pudding. All the food here is really tasty but those were the ones that especially made me drool! Love this place.

Google
This place is very tasty! I got the smoked brisket plate with Mac and cheese and beer battered fries. Everything was quality and what I was hoping for! Definitely planning to come back to try more! They're tarantula hill - liquid candy IPA was killer! I included they're amazing tap collection below as well! Could potentially use a change in music (hard rock) but everyone has their own taste so not going to knock them for that! Great, friendly staff!

Yelp
Friday night prime rib special. The biggest serving of prime rib I have seen in a decade, $32. Marbled. Succulent. Leftovers for days!

Yelp
If you're craving a taste of the frontier, look no further than the Wild West Burger. This culinary delight brings the bold flavors of the Old West to your plate in a mouthwatering masterpiece. From the moment you lay eyes on this burger, you know you're in for a wild ride. The perfectly toasted brioche bun serves as the sturdy foundation for the culinary adventure ahead. As you take your first bite, you're greeted by a symphony of flavors that dance across your palate. The star of the show is undoubtedly the juicy, flame-grilled beef patty, seasoned to perfection with a blend of spices that evoke memories of campfire cookouts under the open sky. Each bite is a journey through the rugged terrain of the American West, with hints of smokiness and a satisfying crunch. But the excitement doesn't stop there. The Wild West Burger is adorned with all the fixings you'd expect from a frontier feast. Crispy bacon adds a touch of savory indulgence, while sharp cheddar cheese brings a bold tanginess to the ensemble. Tangy barbecue sauce and crisp lettuce and tomato provide the perfect balance of flavors and textures, ensuring that every bite is a delight. Pair this culinary masterpiece with a side of crispy fries or onion rings, and you've got yourself a meal fit for a cowboy. Whether you're a seasoned ranch hand or a city slicker with a taste for adventure, the Wild West Burger is sure to satisfy your cravings for bold flavors and hearty fare. So saddle up and dig in - the frontier awaits!

Yelp
We saw this place advertised on Facebook and thought we'd check it out for lunch. It looks like it was bought by new owners in 2019 but still goes by both the old name and the new one, depending on where you look. There is no West Coast Smoke and Taproom on Yelp but there are recent reviews at the same address for West Coast BBQ and Brew. The hostess/server could not have been more helpful, friendly and kind. She was right on the ball with drinks and checking up on us. I would return just for her excellent service. The food was good. My hubs had a patty melt with juicy meat, soft sweet onions and perfectly grilled marbled rye. The meat did not have a smoky or chargrilled taste, but it was still really good. It did not come with any sides, although there are fries, rings, tots, all available for an ala cart price. , We ordered nachos with grilled chicken as an appetizer, and again, they were good, but it did not taste like smokey or bbq'd chicken. Nice crunchy fresh tortilla chips and lots of guacamole and toppings, but $19 because we added chicken. We don't normally eat in a bar environment so maybe food is just more expensive? And maybe this is what 'bar food' is? I had a half sandwich and soup. The sandwich options were tuna or cashew chicken, and I had the latter. It was fine, but nothing special. The celery and cashews were crunchy and fresh, but it was just a huge stack of mixed greens and a small scoop of chicken salad on wheat bread. A decent sandwich made in your aunt's kitchen, but not restaurant worthy. The soup was meatball and vegetable, and tasted fresh. Overall, we will go back again and maybe try the brisket, since it does have the names Smoke and BBQ in their titles. I can't speak for the beer selections, so maybe the taproom's claim to fame is their beer. But again, the service was wonderful the lunch food was good but expensive, and the taphouse overall is worth another try.

Yelp
Food was decent but the prices are a little outrageous for what you actually get. I have found much better deals down the road. The waitress however made up for the prices with her grade a service. The menu isn't anything to write home about and honestly it was 90 outside but it was still cooler than the inside of that building. Over all the experience is alright but with the pricing I can't say its worth a second trip. Thank you to the staff for the great hospitality.

Yelp
Great local spot in LA Mesa! Went during a padres game and they had the bar full, took about 5 min to get a table so that was great! Staff is very friendly and make you feel like home. They have a lot of great food items like burgers, ribs, brisket. I got the beer cheeseburger which had beer cheese all over it, definitely recommend if you're a cheese lover! Also got the side of onion rings which were also really good. This is a great family spot that's welcomed to everyone!

Yelp
Absolutely love this place which is why I WOULD give 5 stars , but coming on after work to no happy hour menu is depressing so I'll give 4.

Yelp
We have been going to West Coast for many years. It's an amazing neighborhood BBQ Shop. Great food and excellent beer selection. Staff is also friendly and helpful.... Very recommended

Yelp
Let's throw in a few more mouth watering pictures from the foodie side. We know the beer selections are crafty, and their food is delicious.

Yelp
The beer selection was amazing, the corned beef tacos and Sonoma salad were delicious! Our server Mallory was so friendly, knowledgeable about the beers and menu, and she mad our evening a very enjoyable one. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
The pulled pork sandwich was tasteless.....like, a glass of water has more taste, tasteless!! No matter how much you guys feel the need to load it up with, cabbage, bland sauce, and then have the front to charge $21.70 for a sandwich and fries, when the pork isn't even seasoned, probably explains why this place is obviously on it's last legs. I guess the initial red flag is that you proudly display the cheapest brand of ketchup you can buy. That speaks volumes about your attention to the purchase of quality ingredients as a restauranteur. Aside from the 30 cent change I left your cashier as she was far too busy carrying on a conversation with someone across the room while attempting to multitask and cash me out at the same time, an art she has yet to master. Maybe you could ask her to concentrate on one job at a time, who knows she might even be able to work up to a smile in the future. I understand this is obviously a one step at a time sort of place, which is one step I wont be taking back there anytime in the foreseeable future. All in all, shite food, half ass service.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews because I never care about it that deeply. However, if this saves 1 person from the horror show that I have experienced for the past 24 hours, then it's worth it. Ordered the rib plate with tots, coleslaw, and Mac n cheese sides. First, in general the food wasn't bad but I've had better...the ribs were ok, bbq sauce so-so, the slaw tasted like cabbage with mayo, and the Mac n cheese was mushy and soupy. Like, I didn't hate it, but tbh the tater tots are the only thing I would order again, they were great. But the literal H*LL that my intestines have been through since...I have been in so much pain I have been PRAYING (and I'm not religious) for the lord to bless me with vomiting just to give the other end of me a break. I have never been in so much pain I've blacked out until today on about hour 15 of round trip visits to the bathroom. I have considered chugging the last of my dog's prescription for flagyl in the hopes it would help, but luckily I think it's starting to slow down. I recognize that my experience may be unique to just me...but be careful out there friends, and if you're unlucky enough to experience the same, my heart genuinely goes out to you.

Yelp
We were too late to get pliney the younger on tap so we opted for other drinks. We tried out their fried green tomatoes and they were pretty tasty. Would come here again as they have a pretty good selection of Russian river beers

Yelp
12 year anniversary tonight with the trivia game and great beer. This is the place to have fun. I will post some photos

Yelp
We wanted to love it - unfortunately it was not even good Our server was rude and completely put off by our questions as first time patrons We asked beer questions and were told to read the board We got past that - then the food Well the ribs were so dry (could not swallow them) - pulled pork was dry but had good flavor - brisket was pretty much fat over cooked and drenched in bbq sauce Everybody has an off day, unfortunately with both the service and the food being terrible we won't be coming . I hope they read some of these reviews and make some adjustments.

Yelp
Great beer selection. Food is pretty good. The service....... That's another story. Definitely could be better. Servers stand around and socialize with regulars/friends.

Yelp
The time has come to leave a very honest review. I've been coming here for close to 10 years. In the last 4-5 I would consider us normal patrons (at least once a month we would visit). I supported them during their first years when their food was NOT good...I supported them during Covid when they allowed takeout/to-go. My family and I have had birthdays here and small get togethers. We classified WC as a "Go-To" for their nice selection of Beer and the food which in the last 5 has improved by a LOT. And that is what the 2 Stars in my review stand for, their food and beer. Their service however, is marginal at best. They have no idea how to seat, serve or handle a busy situation with common courtesy. Some unfortunate examples: 2 years back I found plastic in the cheese of my burger. I took it out, showed the waitress and she half apologized and offered to make me another. I said no as I didn't want to wait as my wife was already eating. I picked through the food and ate the rest. She came back at the end and charged us full price. I asked "is this normal to not even comp a least part of the meal?" She came up with some "Well, you didn't ask at the time and took the food, sooo..." and so I just said whatever and paid it. Another example, I walked in and they were sorta half full. The girl at the front said "Hey, take a seat anywhere you want".. I walked over to a table near the left side and tried to sit down only to have another waitress nearby verbally abuse us for trying to sit at a 4 top being a couple. I said sorry and told her we were told to sit wherever and she kept just harping on the fact that we were wrong to assume we could sit there. I walked out, at that point she was visually upset and I didn't want to be in her presence. Another example, just last month. The big guy that works there was super rude when we were waiting in the patio area. He said "Don't hover here and wait outside the patio, we will seat you when WE are ready". An older couple did the same thing we did and he greeted them, and walked them right over to a table and cleaned it for them on the spot. We arrived before them, fyi. Another example is that we arrived, put our name on the list and waited to be seated. I walked in to check and the girl who took our name said "Go sit over there..." and it was the smallest table near the bar/corner. They ghosted us for almost 20 mins. A waitress came by to actually chat/gossip with her regulars right behind us and then looked at us with no menus, no drinks, nothing and asked the table of some other people right next to us "How are you guys?! Need anything else?" and then walked away. Needless to say, we left after another 5 mins of being left alone. I don't think this business model will last guys. I used to get this type of "tude" at Toronado in NP back in the day and it was actually expected. You guys are in a strip mall serving beer and semi-okay BBQ. Please know your role as an establishment and be good at service in a service industry. Seems pretty standard to me. I am not saying we have not gotten good service at times, we have (I would guess) a 60% chance of a flawless night. We have come here more than 50 times and we are now considering not being back. Want some advice? Go check out Brody's in Jamul or Mastiff on Palm and see how the service is there because West Coast needs to do its best to emulate it.

Yelp
The name changed to West Coast Smoke and Tap House. It is owned by Tom Nickel and If you are into San Diego's craft beer scene, you know who he is. Very friendly staff and customers are also nice, and there are many regulars. They offer a variety of food, including BBQ, and have a good tap list of mostly independent breweries. There are also daily specials! Wednesdays are quesadillas that come in different varieties (pictured is the pollo asado).

Yelp
I don't know how i haven't left a review here before! I've been going here for years. At least 5/6. I come every Monday for wing night and it's my absolute favorite tradition, I've never had an issue with the service or attitudes. I know all of the serves by name and they all know me. They're always very polite. And the wings are always phenomenal! They always do their best to accommodate whoever i bring and even bring out heaters if it's too cold outside. I am absolutely obsessed with west coast and all of its employees.

Erik B.

Yelp
$17 burger that was cooked extra well when I asked for medium and not to mention that the $17 doesn't even come with fries or a side. Way over priced!
google avatar

Diana J.

Yelp
Great spot for bbq and brisket, wings and beer! Their salads are great! And the Garlic Fries are Uh-mazing!!

Susan C.

Yelp
Went for dinner the other night and the food was good. But had to comment on the extremely unprofessional service from the female server. Don't know her name but she was completely rude, didn't want to listen and huffed off with an attitude and an expression to match. What's up? Did she go to the middle school server's academy or was she auditioning for the soup nazi position? The male server was apologetic and shouldn't have had to be ingratiating to counter the experience. Afraid to return.

Gene M.

Yelp
Best menu in La Mesa of places having BBQ and open all day. The brisket and ribs were good...and the side salad had a great blue cheese dressing, and their garlic fries were to die for. Kenai was an outstanding server: attentive, knowledgeable, fast, and friendly. They have a nice beer list. The place feels comfortable with a nice patio area and an open feel to the pub atmosphere inside.
google avatar

Alisa K.

Yelp
Service was the shining star here, 5 star review if only for that! My salad however was one of the worst I've ever had. And it gave me massive heartburn, the gift that keeps on giving. It was a Buffalo chicken salad, but it was hard to find the lettuce under everything, and chicken and bacon were very very very greasy.
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't updated my review for West Coast. The food here is the best in the area in terms of pub food. It also easily smacks down the "up market" competitors such as The Pioneer. Quality easily averages an 9/10. I order togo once per week. My regular items are the garden grilled cheese melt, the prime rib dip, and whatever rotating special burger they have. Burgers are substantial in size and flavorful. Fries aren't included though, no biggie, get some onion rings on the side - THEY ARE FIRE HERE. My favorite specials are the lobster blt, clam chowder, beef ribs and prime rib night. Prices here are so modest. The tap list is also awesome. My only feedback is that while every employee is super nice and have great reports with regulars and locals, service can be spotty at times, but only when they are slammin. It could use an interior refresh as well but that's subjective. A neighborhood staple that everyone should come out and support. Bomb food, bomb prices, amazing amazing place.

Yelp
Hungry? Want delish, hot BBQ? Crisp Fries? Maybe just a grilled chicken breast sando? Eat out doors, here & make sure ASHLYN is your server, my YELPers/BBQ lovers. Down home ambience, plenty of outside seating & spaced indoor spots to enjoy.
google avatar

Michael Q.

Yelp
I came here for the Nookie, and I ended up with bbq sauce all over my new Bikini Kill shirt. My magnanimous experience started with a colorful girl named Tori, and then at 2:00pm, a new girl came on and I think her name was Kasey. I was just looking for a slab of ribs, and I ended up hitting the jackpot with these two precious bartendresses. I highly recommend this place when these two are worky working Keep up the good work y'all! #ilikefoodfoodtastesgood #twodeadmilkmenfans #toriandkaseyrule #colorfulgirls

Ronda R.

Yelp
No doubt the food is really good but if you don't get there right when they open, don't get your hopes up for any special they have. every time I go there out of something that I want if they're going to advertise the specials they should have enough for the whole day until they close.

David M.

Yelp
I just ordered a pastrami sandwich from them .it was the worst sandwich I have ever eaten. I do you mess a pastrami sandwich up!!!!. It was terrible.

Yelp
This place is great! Nice indoor and outdoor seating area. Friendly staff and good service. Taco Tuesday deals with $3 and $5 tacos - there is SO much stuff in them and it's a full size taco. Delicious fresh food. Great craft beer selection too!
google avatar

Shelli S.

Yelp
Mmmm-mm Tuesday night is taco night, they have a choice of pulled pork, shrimp, fish tacos, there some surf and turf options with the $3 and up for prices, chef is good here, worth trying for sure. He does not do it cheaply and have pour ingredients for this either. Monday is Wing Night Wednesday is Fiesta Specials Thursday is $5 pints Friday is Smoked Prime Rib Dinner Saturday is Steak Night Sunday is Fish and Chips, pull pork nachos In case you go by the menu and try a burger, it will be cooked perfectly! You can get your burger cooked med-rare, etc, I do like that, cause who wants overcooked meat, ick. OK wait if you do want that, you can still do it so there ;) There are so many things to share, good salads, and desserts are delicious too. I have tried a few salads with chicken and wasabi and also a salad with brisket, so tender and amazing. There are quite a few salads for a brew place, I think that is why you see such a good mix of families. It's always busy cause they are back to 7 days a week dining, but don't be worried you will have to come here and stand outside in line or something like Panda Express has been lately, you can sit and eat and you can sit outside or inside. There is also a bar to belly up to if you wanna go crazy on those micro brews.

Yelp
WC bbq. One option for 25 bucks. Don't call yourself a bbq place. Ordered a burger, all bun. I have never wrote a review. This place does La Mesa wrong

Yelp
This bbq house is close to some of our family so we have been a few times. I cannot recommend this place enough if you're a meat eater. The service is excellent but let's get to the meat of it, the MEAT is so good. Yesterday I had the Beef Dip or maybe it's called Prime Rib something ... which came with au jus (btw this is pronounced like this in French "o zhu"). The bread is always super fresh, the meat is tender, they bring it with a creamy horse radish, but I asked for the fresh stuff and then I spread it all over the sandwich. Luckily my nephew came and had some of my sandwich cause I could not eat it all. We got sweet potato fries to share for the table and extra crispy wings, the blue cheese had big chunks of cheese which my husbands family loves. I always enjoy the food here, and the service is just a bit better than other places in my opinion. At one point my husband that loves spice put some of my horse radish on his chicken and he showed my nephew his eyes watering under his sunglasses was a big tear. Oh yeah, at the end Owen wanted to try the carrot cake, but we also got a lava cake. Both were very fresh and moist and delicious as well.
google avatar

Neil S.

Yelp
Well this Southwest Burger was just what I needed. I added a salad as the side and I was stuffed. I also had a Blind Pig IPA from Russian River. West Coast BBQ has a great taplist, so you can enjoy many a brew. Parking wasn't a problem. There's a nice sized parking lot. I plan to make more visits and try some of the BBQ. The service was excellent, very friendly and made you feel like a regular. Cheers to the next visit!

Yelp
We entered the crowed restaurant with my service dog at 12:30 and two tables were open right by the door. We asked if can we sit right here and the waitress proceeded to say "no animals allowed inside" we said "she's a service animal & she is allowed " she said "it doesn't matter no animals Allowed I'm gonna go call the owner" When she returned from "calling the owner" My husband had to ask her so what did the owner say she said "the owner didn't answer." At this point out of embarrassment and humiliation we chose not to Patronize this restaurant. To bad I have to give them a star To register the yelp...

Yelp
I had read in Yelp about some serious deficiencies in service at West Coast Barbecue and Brew, so i approached my first visit with a sense of caution. Happily, there was a man cleaning the outdoor tables when I arrived and I was attended to by him with reasonable promptness and care. The fried zucchini was black board special on the evening of my visit, so I expected it to be good. However, the dish was insipid and without much flavor, as if the forlorn slices of zucchini had just been defrosted and microwaved prior to presentation. The BLT sandwich, on the other hand, was a winner. Moreover, it was served on good, well-toasted sourdough bread. As the evening wore on, I noted whenever my waiter came out on the patio [he had only two other tables on the patio] he never EVER looked in my direction. It was as if he were wearing blinders. When he had been out on the patio five or six times without any communication, I finally gave up and went inside to pay. When i inquired of him for the reason of seemingly forgetting about one of his assigned tables, he simply replied "We are slammed". But that was not the case. He simply failed to look at one of the three outdoor tables to which he was assigned. I understand a waiter cannot attend to each table every moment when he is occupied with another task, but after his five or six cruises around the patio with no action, it was time to call it a day. As always, I blame the restaurant's management for the lack of proper training of their staff [look at the tables to which you are assigned!], which resulted in the waiter's transgressions.

Yelp
Small bar/restaurant with a great vibe... been going to one of the sister restaurants O'Brians for years and finally mosied on over here. Great craft beer selection especially if you like IPAs and the food is killer! Try the bbq pulled pork nachos, you will thank me later!

Yelp
West Coast is a hidden gem from beer enthusiasts! They often carry Russian River beers on tap including Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder. Today, we enjoyed one of my favorite local beers, the Jalapeño Golden Ale from Nickel Brewery in Julian. If this review was solely for the beer, they'd get 5 stars! In regards to food, they have all the classic bar bites-it's an ideal place to cure a hangover! Their burgers are good and my husband swears they have some of the best beer- battered shrimp tacos in all of the county. The only critique I have of this spot is that the atmosphere is bland. It could use some sprucing up and definitely some work done on the bathrooms. I'd also like to see them remove the breading from the wings and serve they au-natural. Overall, great place for a casual bite and beer. I should mentioned they do NOT serve liquor, beer and wine only.

Yelp
I am not one for posting negative reviews, but my experience at this place was TERRIBLE.. Our server took forever. I ordered my appetizer and it came out with our food. Never brought us our waters. Not to mention also our utensils and napkins. The "manager" and his team are so unprofessional, we purchased a bottle of wine and did not finish it. We were told we could not take home the bottle we had purchased and accused of us of serving "underage" people. (everyone was OVER 21). On top of everything this place is expensive. I recommend taking your business elsewhere and to one that deserves it. I will NOT be recommending West Coast Barbecue & Brew to anyone in the future!

Brian A.

Yelp
Excellent beer selection. Its nice to find a place in La Mesa with an outdoor patio. The server was very polite and accommodating. Love the food and selection of specials. You guys rock
google avatar

Dustin S.

Yelp
How does this place have 3.5 stars? I've been here twice and will return again ASAP. The first time I had the jalapeno chicken sandwich and was blown away. This time I tried one of the burgers, the Southwest burger. It was perfect. Juicy patty, bacon onion rings and the most delicious chipotle mayo. On top of that the service is great, the beer selection is fantastic. What more do you want!? I'll be back, I need to try the West Coast Reuben.
google avatar

Jim E.

Yelp
Down in La Mesa riding ebikes and dropped into the best brew pub & eatery I know. Well it was better than ever. Bump them from 4 to 5 stars. Turns out they have a " New Sheriff in town" ( Zachery). We got there at 11:00 am and seen Z man setting up and cleaning. He fixed us right up. Tasty brews and pulled pork nachos. That was the winning combo. Zach had just brewed some ice tea and we had a round of that before we left on bikes. Perfect mid day visit to West Coast.

Yelp
Been coming here for three or four years now. Very consistent food, excellent, everything on the menu I've tried it's fantastic. Try the pork tacos! I always get the last Coast tangerine wheat beer, excellent service is very good also

Yelp
This spot is a Neighborhood favorite. It's a place you can get a really fantastic beer and great food. We can walk to this place from our house. They have outdoor seating too. My go to is the pulled pork torta and onion rings. My sandwich did need a little more sauce. Portions are good size.We usually start off with a house salad. You can tell they care about the quality do the food. Good portions. The kids mac and cheese is my sons go to. My husband likes the ribs and tacos. Staff are always super nice.

Yelp
Phenomenal. From the service to the food. Phenomenal. The fries are incredible -- the BBQ chicken is next level moist But the bbq sauce is why i wrote the review. Perfect Thankful for this place.

Yelp
This is a nice little neighborhood spot in San Carlos off of Lake Murray. Plenty of parking and lots of shaded outdoor dining. They have lots of specials. The Patio Specials all include a pint of icy cold craft brew. The menu has options for everyone. We had the lunch special, Artichoke Salmon salad with vinaigrette dressing. The greens were crisp and the salmon fresh. It was a good sized salad and tasty. Service was great and they have all sorts of hands free menu and payment options using QR codes. If you're in the area I highly recommend you give them a try.

Yelp
Our neighbor recommended this place and I saw them on the news a few days ago. Our server and beer were great! However the food was the worst! I'm not exaggerating. My husband and I each got the prime rib dip we had seen on Yelp in pictures which was $17 a piece and it was disgusting. The meat was grey, tough, fatty and there was no flavor. The au jus had no flavor as well and seemed greasy. We also got the kids chicken tenders and Mac and cheese and it was obvious these were frozen tenders and i'm not sure how you can mess up mac & cheese, but they did. For a barbecue place I would think all the meat items would be fresh and melt in your mouth, this was just bar food. We usually go to Smokey and the brisket but we wanted to change it up, we won't be doing that again. The quality of the food here was sub par, honestly one of the worst meals we've had in years unfortunately.

Yelp
I almost never write reviews, but I am still annoyed by my experience. I rarely go out to eat anymore as prices have gotten so expensive and service worse and worse it seems these days. This was a treat to try this place out for the first time and it's in my neighborhood and came recommended. I had dinner 2 weeks ago at this establishment with a friend. It was busy but not crazy. I saw a table in the back with a couple of glasses on it. We were told that they would call us back shortly as they needed to wipe the table down. After about 10 or so minutes I went back in to check on the table and they told me we could take a seat and they would be right over to wipe the table. We sat down at the table with a dirty cloth and spray bottle sitting on it. I was surprised they didn't ask us to wait longer if they were still too busy to clean the table or just walk over with us and quickly wipe it. Outside of the slow service my main grip was how we were treated and what I was charged for. I ordered a chicken sandwich with fries and asked for ketchup and mayo for my fries when placing the order. After quite a bit of time our food arrived sans our beers and ketchup for the fries. When I inquired about our beers and ketchup the serverr told me, with what felt like attitude, that she was really busy and it would take a minute. What?! I ordered fries and wasn't brought ketchup, which is standard, and then I get attitude for it? Not ok. After waiting a few I asked the table next to me if I could barrow their squeeze bottle of ketchup so I could enjoy my meal before it got cold. After we were done we had to ask for our bill and when no one came to take our cards we went up to the front to pay. My friend asked to be charged 28 and I was going to pay the rest but somehow they only charged her $20 and me the rest. We didn't bother with having them correct it. On top of all that I was charged .50 for the dollop of mayo I asked for with my fries. Since when does a place charge for mayo? If you are going to charge me for mayo after I spent a whopping $22.00 for a sandwich and fries at a pub (a sandwich for 16 and an extra 6 for fries...seems really steep) you need to inform that there will be an extra charge. I work as a server in a fine dining restaurant, and we only charge 20 for a burger and it includes fries, and we will even give you aioli's or house made ranch at no charge. I know food costs are going up but I thought it was a bit expensive for the kind of establishment it was and then to get sat at a dirty table, charged for mayo, and to have some rude and slow service was not ok. Again, I work as a server and I know how tough things can be, but there is a way to take orders and to be hospitable even when busy. That being said I gave it two stars because I liked that they had a few different sour beers to choose from, and it was hands down the best chicken sandwich I have ever had. This is saying a lot as I have worked in restaurants all my life and have had a lot of good cuisine. Too bad the overall experience means I will not be back and cannot give it a good recommendation.

Yelp
Just read another elites lreview saying this place is an old school throwback and yeah I could see his point and it has been here for awhile but the newest owner has added something special. The great craft beers! The owners of O'Brien's and Nickel brewery in Julian took over this barbecue place a few years back and now it's much better and busier. Even after the revamp, I think it could be re re vamped in terms of decor. Maybe get a longer bar and nicer tables outside. Overall what I have eaten here has been very good though, but the real deal is the beer selection and their specials on it are pretty good as well. Prices are affordable, so maybe if they sunk some money into it, they would have to raise prices, so I change my mind, decor is just fine. Let's not get carried away.
