5 Scenic Trains for Exploring Scotland's Dramatic Highlands, Sparkling Lochs, and Coastal Towns

"The West Highland Line travels through the Scottish Highlands, offering views of dramatic peaks, valleys, and lochs. The route starts in Glasgow and runs to either Oban or Mallaig, passing charming towns, villages, and scenic landmarks like the Glenfinnan Viaduct. What a wonderful hotel near the train and ferry stations. The hotel was comfortable and clean with a spacious bedroom and balcony. If the weather had been better we could have enjoyed it. Dining at the hotel was a great experience at dinner. The mussels were the best I’ve had in Scotland all summer!! Breakfast was in a lovely dining room and what we did have was good. We did not understand how important early dining was so when we arrived 45 min before breakfast service was over, they had run out of many dishes. However, their kindness and service were the stars here. Highly recommend staying and dining here if you are traveling through.

Walking uphill after the train got in at 11:39 almost killed me BUT worth it. Second visit 2024 & 2025 September & October. ||These beds are super super comfortable- i slept super well. Very professional and nice staff. Bar great. Restaurant great and a very very comfortable lounge to hang out in. Weather meant I had to stay an extra night as ferries weren’t running. Stayed in lodge (cheapest & twin) and a double. Reccomending highly!! It’s not easy to find accommodation here- book in advance.Location is perfect. Enjoy!!😊

Unfortunately I felt pretty disappointed for my £149 per night in a cosy twin. There are lots of steps up to hotel and no assistance offered with bags up to room. Room was adequate with view of the car park. The lounge bar area is cute. Breakfast was okay, with the usual offering, but I found the lady pretty grumpy (as did a fellow guest). Reception staff were much friendlier. Basically, an okay stay, but overpriced for what I got.

Duvet cover scratchy, bobbly poor quality and way past its best. Bathroom towel rail cold; reported to receptionist who made no comment. Generally felt single room, second class. Vegan burger was not a burger, not sure what it was, some tasteless mash covered in breadcrumbs, it and the chips which came with it were clearly straight out of the freezer. Wine list was lamentable, usual suspects at absurd prices. Wholly pretentious and way out of date. Waitresses were efficient and charming, dining room was pleasant; chap I complained to couldn’t care less. Far better places to stay and eat don’t be fooled into believing that expensive is necessarily the best. There is no integrity here and, by the way, the coffee is execrable. The Highlands have far better to offer from people who really understand the art of hospitality.

Stayed one night. Family room clean and tidy. Great view from room, dining room and front of hotel. Breakfast was good with adequate choice.|We booked one night which was expensive compared to dates before and after so felt it was bit of a rip off. Overall we enjoyed.

The hotel needs to be invested in. The walls are thin, the doors need to be slammed to close making being quiet very difficult. Parking is easy, the proximity to the city center and marina is nice. I would not stay here a second time because of the high price of the stay vs the quality of the experience.

Staff was super friendly ! Jana, Loren, chef and her 2 assistants amazing. Cheri, Annabelle the best ! |The food was Michelin rated at every meal but the best at dinner! Atmosphere was great, ( bar next to check-in) service was better than home! Prices were great Alcohol really low! |Do not visit so it can stay our secret!

I have mixed reviews for this hotel. Upon check in, we were told we would be staying in the lodge around back. Hmmm...I would call it a trailer. Obviously, we got what we paid for. So fair warning to pay a little more. However, after reading the other reviews about the water, our water was great, both temperature and pressure. I chalked up this night's stay to at least I had a good bed, which it was. We woke up freezing in the morning because I didn't want to run the heater all night. But I was warm and cozy while in bed. We ate dinner at the restaurant and the food was good. Nothing to rave about, but it was good.
