On the Grid : The Grave of Edgar Allan Poe

"Edgar Allan Poe is a famed poet and novelist, but no one is certain what caused his untimely death in 1849 (drugs? drinking? rabies?). What we do know for sure is that he found final rest at Westminster Hall. Actually, Westminster has two burial spots attributed to Poe: the first, where he remained until 1875, marked by a headstone with a raven, and his present grave, marked with a larger monument. Pay him a visit any time of year, but if you’re nearby on January 19th, keep your eyes peeled for the return of the Poe Toaster—a secret visitor who for decades left three roses and an unfinished bottle of cognac on Poe’s original grave to commemorate his birthday. A fittingly mysterious tribute for a man who loved the macabre." - Exit10

The grave of Edgar Allan Poe... Yes, please! Just some advice to those who visit the cemetery. Look past the grave of Poe... We agree, it was awesome to be there and pay our respects to Poe, but spend some time looking around at the placards and the others who are buried in the cemtery. Poe's original burial site and Poe's grandfather, who brought the family to Baltimore, serve as examples. The grave of Philip Barton Key II, son of Francis Scott Key, who was murdered by General Sickles (that's an interesting story), among many, many others there. We want to give a shout-out to the man who was working there and preparing to leave for the day. We were looking for a couple of graves that my wife had on our list to visit and were having a difficult time finding them. Initially, he went inside the church, came out with a map, and walked around with us to help find one of the graves. Then he took us—personally, just us— into the catacombs to find one of the others. Like I said, he was getting ready to leave, and he took some time and spent it with us. We will never forget that. Thank you!

My boyfriend and I did the private tour. We had Jeff Jerome as our tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about Edgar Allan Poe, and all of the other historic gravesites there. Jeff was very welcoming and friendly. We highly recommend doing a tour with him.

This historical landmark is unmatched in character! I photographed a wedding here in October 2023. The burial grounds outside add an extra sense of eerie, but the inside is just gorgeous with high ceilings and pillars. I loved the burial grounds specifically because of the trees (there aren't that many colorful ones in Baltimore City but here there were a few really pretty ones). Also, photographing a vibrant, white wedding gown against dramatic lighting through trees and mausoleums is... inspiring and incredible! I suggest paying lots of attention to the curves in the architecture, it adds extra personality to the portraits. Also, the grand organ is simply a showstopper! Certainly a must see!

Visited as part of a Poe tour and there is so much more here. It's small with lots of informational signs.

It’s open on Sundays and times are posted online. So much history to see and beautiful grounds. The main gate is opened to the public with the exceptions of the side gates. The church itself was closed by the time I got there but I was able to walk the grounds.

The grave yard was historic, more than just Edgar Allen Poe. The signage is pretty good as far as stating who is buried and why they are historically significant. It also explains, a bit, about monument styles. The graveyard is a bit of a maze and larger than ot appears at first. So allow yourself to wander and explore. It would be nice if the church building was opened for tours. It doesn't seem to be. I was able to get a quick picture of the inside through an open door.

Visited to see the famed burial site of beloved poet, Edgar Allan Poe but unfortunately it was closed. Every cemetery gate was chained and padlocked. so I was only able to snap pictures through the fence. I was excited to learn that General McHenry, and Poe's grandfather were also buried here but wasn't able to gain entrance to see their grave stones or read the plaques placed throughout the cemetery.

This is a church with a lot of history and a fascinating churchyard with other figures of interest aside from Poe so it's worth walking around. If you are visiting the church/churchyard specifically, I would recommend calling ahead as both of them aren't always open (the gate to the just the churchyard is usually open but I have swung by and it's been chained shut).
