20 Best Places to Go Apple Picking in the U.S.

"A 16-acre historic orchard home to more than 700 trees and dozens of varieties (about 30 in September and 60+ in October), offering volunteer picking days (where volunteers who pick a bushel keep two pounds), a self-guided history tour, special Historic Days in September, and an annual Applefest in October." - Andrea Romano Andrea Romano Andrea Romano is a writer and editor in New York City. BEST APPLES EVER! I love apples and it was so great coming here. You will discover apple varieties that you have never known existed. It was so fun to try the new fruits that my family and I couldn't even wait untill we got hometo try some. They also have Carmel apples, apple doughnuts and cider all which we sampled and enjoyed. This is an apple orchard. There are no pumpkins or decorative corn. Just amazing delicious apples. The apples are very reasonably priced and I never want to go back to grocery store apples again. If you are an apple lover like me you will very glad to visit here.

Such a hidden gem, I love trying all of the unique varieties of apples! They have little description cards for each one. The prices are reasonable and the apples delicious!

Weston's is my favorite place to buy fruit! They have the most amazing variety of cherries, apples, pears, plums, peaches, and crabapples. They also sell (but not every week) caramel apples, hand pies, donuts, and cider. I love that the staff is so knowledgeable about the varieties. Since this is an "antique" orchard, you'll find varieties you've likely never heard of to try. Note: you do not get to pick your own fruit off of the trees. The fruit is in crates inside of their barn, and you choose what and how much you'd like. It's weighed, as most is sold by the pound (with the exception of plums and peaches). If you like fresh fruit, you need to go to Weston's.

I've been coming to this place almost every fall Sunday afternoon for around ten years. These people are wonderful. The variety of apples is amazing AND fun! APPLES! THAT ARE PINK ON THE INSIDE!! I've even come for a specific apple they were already sold out of for the day and they went and picked me some while I enjoyed an outstanding view from their barn! Worth the stop!

You will never eat a grocery store apple again! An amazing selection of the most flavorful apples. Plus great prices, super friendly and knowledgeable staff and a charming location where you can take a wander through the orchard or visit the historical site across the road.

Weston's has so many apple varieties not found at the typical orchard. Whether you are looking for apples for eating, baking, sauce, or cider, they've got options. Stop by regularly to see what's new throughout the season. Their farm stand is a must visit for the scenery and historic value. Apple bins are labeled with the variety's origin and description. The farm stand is one of my favorite places to visit on a weekend drive.

If you've never been to the Weston orchard, waste no more time! Get there! Run by the same family for nearly a hundred years, the apple varieties here are exceptional, antique varieties that you won't find in your grocery store. The flavors are incredible! The experience going to the farm itself, is also wonderful. They sell from the beautiful old barn, which looks down over the hillside apple orchard. They also grow pears, cherries, make cider, And have workshops on tree grafting, among other things! A couple times a year there is an event at the small historic site across the street, which also makes visiting the orchard a fun afternoon experience, cuz you can tour the group of historic buildings there during those events, by the New Berlin historic society. If you can't make it to the farm, they sell their fruit at the West Allis and Madison Farmers markets. My family and I have been going there for years, and I now drive over an hour to get there! Cannot recommend highly enough!

Going to Weston’s is like the best kind of school field trip—stepping back in time to when things were simpler. They have an incredible variety of apples all grown organically and they will teach you anything you want to know about apples if you ask. We go every Sunday in season.

Yelp
Greatest apple variety I have ever seen. Little granny is a hoot. We go there every year! Don't miss it. Best apples around.

Yelp
Cox's Orange Pippin! Calville Blanc d'Hiver! The Weston family has focused on smaller quantities of a larger variety of rare apples. This is just a fantastic, small, specialty apple orchard; they have a truly amazing selection of heirloom apples. Popular favorites like the two I list above are present, but so too are more obscure varieties like the German, Zaubergau Reinette. Yup, the orchard offers an amazing variety of the most hard to find apples for eating, cellaring and cooking. Open to the public during apple season on Sunday's, they have a space in their barn where their in-season apples are setout for your shopping. You may also find their apples at a number of farmers markets and in desserts in Milwaukee and Madison's best restaurants. If you are at all interested in enjoying apples that offer much more complex flavors than the abomination that is red delicious, this would be the perfect place to start!

Yelp
Bust Weston held a pig roast last weekend with sales of tickets to support their non-profit organization that produces antique apples for sale at local farm markets. I pre-purchased tickets for 8 people two weeks before the event and saw online that they eventually sold-out days before the event was to take place. The fliers said the event was from Noon-5p so we planned on going mid-day. Upon arrival we picked up tickets from will-call and proceeded to check out the food. There was literally no food and no plates. The catering folks were closing up shop for the day. Really an overall disappointment and there were many others on the will-call list that hadn't picked up their tickets yet. It seems pretty simple that if you pre-sell X tickets you'd have enough food for X people. This event had all the makings for a great day - food, drink, music and farm tours. I'm not sure if this is a yearly event or what but I'd be hesitant to attend again.

Yelp
Apparently there are about 1000 different trees on the property, but you won't do any picking -- all of the available apples are in crates in their barn, each with descriptions of their origin and some insights into their flavors. And you don't need to commit to any particular apple; you just fill up your bag with whatever you want, with a price of $2/lb. Just remember the hours are 12-5pm on Sundays ONLY, and probably best to bring cash, in case they're unable to process cards. This place is all about substance over style; nothing fancy to draw you in. Worth the trip.

Yelp
After making the 2 hour trip up from Chicago I found this orchard closed on a Saturday afternoon. There is no info for their hours on their website. And no hours to be found on the Internet. We arrived to find it is only open Sunday's 2-5pm and by appointment. Is there a 0 star rating??
