It's been over 5 years since I was on Minjerribah - I've been a fan of Oceanic for many, many years and noticed that Whale Tail now occupies the same premises. Signage aside, you wouldn't realise - the same high levels of service and product are still on offer. I've also noticed some imposters have moved in next door! Their gelati appears to be imported from the mainland - not made fresh like at Whale Tail. I also experienced a very enjoyable double espresso courtesy of the barista. Absolutely recommended - and I don't generally have a sweet tooth. Perfect after the Gorge Walk.

Very chatty and friendly staff and a good selection of ice creams. Very pleasant area to sit and have ice creams after visiting the local beaches, with some friendly locals too!

Month of visit: March 2024 Best gelato in the island! The place is just perfect because you can easily enjoy the beautiful view of the beach. My fav is the chocolate! Not too sweet but the choco is rich. Too bad they didnt have the pistachio when i came. Had a great time here🥰

To quote my boy who demolished the banana smoothie “I must have the recipe”. We went there as it was tipped the best coffee on the island. I enjoyed it but my wife who is more… a connoisseur 🤷🏼‍♂️said it tasted a bit week. They were heavily staffed and good to see the owners give a younger crew a run. They were accomodating for our kids too and very reasonably priced. Give it a go I say.

Coffee, icecream and service are really good. Price of coffee is the most expensive I've ever paid: $5.60 for an espresso. Even Switzerland was cheaper. I probably would not get a coffee there again but it was a good treat as a one off.

There are two gelaterias on Mooloomba Rd at Pt Lookout, but I would only go to Whale Tail (and did every day I was on Straddie!) They are local, with locally-made gelato - not bought in from the mainland. There are amazing flavours that often change daily - I loved the apple/pine/mint combo and the cherry cheesecake flavour, but they’re all yummy. It’s not cheap (nothing is nowadays) but the serves are generous and the flavours great. You can sit out the front or pick a spot across the road and watch whales passing by in winter. Great place!

Yelp
Yes back again. It's now called Whale Tail Gelati and Coffee Bar. Same location - same great ice cream and gelato. It is under new management. Another trip to Straddie and it would not be complete with out a stop here. The ice cream flavours are broad- from classic chocolate to Iced Vovo, bubblegum, dragon fruit and raspberry cheese cake there is a good range. Tried them all with the fam and loved them. Where else do you get the bonus view and kangaroos jumping in the park across the street. As good as ever!

Yelp
Did I not give this five stars? My bad. Even if you didn't consider the premium location, at Point Lookout where there is a minimal settlement with few businesses but great views, the gelato itself is up with the best ones in Australia for selection and tastiness. And it isn't too expensive. And they do have some dairy-free sorbets. And if all that wasn't enough, you can get your gelato in shake form or on a waffle. The only real drawback to this place is the line of happy customers it tends to attract.

Yelp
Here's the score on Oceanic. It's gelati made fresh daily and you'll be tempted win flavours like watermelon and mint, kiwi, pineapple, and more traditional creamy combos such as cookies & cream, tiramisu or chocolate. They say location is key and I'd say being directly across the road from the beach (and prime whale watching areas) these guys have the winning ticket. We stopped in and ordered our version of a Splice (2-scoop in a cup with a scoop of vanilla and a scoop of pineapple). It would have worked equally well with the raspberry gelati. The texture is light, just as it should be, and the flavours aren't fake-tasting. The fruit-based gelati are more akin to a sorbet-like texture. It's a welcoming and (I think) family run shop. With such a casual atmosphere it's easy to spend an afternoon in the sun watching the locals and tourists come and go. You are able to order coffee or smoothies if that's more your thing. There's even a water bowl waiting for your pampered pet to enjoy a drink while you eat. Pro Tip: They are cash only so come prepared as the nearest cash-withdrawal opportunity is at the chemist where you'll need to spend a minimum of $5 for the privilege.

Yelp
Super yummy gelato. My husband loved the chocolate licorice and I tried the crunchy peanut butter and the mint chip. We went two days in a row to escape the humidity, and we enjoyed ours cones overlooking the water. $9 for two single scoop cones, reasonable convenient and tasty as. Great for kids, families or anyone who loves gelato!

Yelp
Fantastic organic gelato here, all handmade with the best ingredients by the lovely local ladies who tirelessly dish out delightful flavours to the thousands of initiated. Not only is this as good a gelato as you'll get anywhere, it is in the most idyllic position, with green headland rolling down to cliffs overlooking the breathtaking Frenchman's Beach. The only things to worry about are whether to get a second scoop or not and to be carefull on a windy day that your treat doesn't get blown away - eat fast in these conditions!

Yelp
Oh god. I dream about Oceanic Gelati. It's not enough that they have the BEST location on my favourite island (the views are incredible, cross the road at the right time of year with your gelati and sit in the park to watch whales migrate right under your nose) but they also make gelati that has to borderline on THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. Sorry for the caps but I feel strongly about this. It is made fresh every day (yes every day, believe me this place really does exist) so you never know what flavours you'll find. They do keep favourites on high rotation so you won't be without a chocolate or vanilla option but you need to be adventurous. Try coconut ice, or lemon brulee for a flavour sensation. Hot tip, don't bother with cones or cups, just go straight for the take home packs. It's heaps cheaper to buy by weight and you'd be surprised how quickly you can motor through a litre, finishing up in time to try the next days offerings.

Yelp
Homemade Italian ice cream? Just yummy! Nice view but what really impressed me was how quickly they got the kids their ice cream. All at the same time brewing the 'long-blacks' and cappuccinos for the adults, who, of course, got ice cream too! Nice job! All the kids happy: big and small.

Yelp
So yum, had this a couple of times while we stayed. Try the Affogato with the chocolate chip gelato- yum! Can anyone help me though- what is the name of the fantastic shop next door that sells womens fashion? I tried on this awesome pair of shoes that I regretfully didn't buy and I want to know what brand they are so I can source them somewhere!

Yelp
Lovely gelati, but as a traveller who had never tasted gelati from this establishment before, I felt extremely let down by the customer service. I requested to try 2 gelatis, which is standard practice at every gelati establishment I've been to, around the world. They said they didn't hand out more than one during busy periods. I was very polite and asked if they could split the amount normally handed out in one test between the two. The staff member obliged but was very rude. Then when I asked to have a cup of both (because they were both so good) she was extremely rude to me for the rest of the transaction, in front of my family and other customers. As a well-mannered paying customer I don't think negative disrespectful treatment from staff is appropriate.
