Google
Such a beautiful building and museum with an interesting history, and in a beautiful location! Inside photos aren't allowed, unfortunately, but expect to see some sophisticated plumbing of 1920's, an elevator and some really narrow hallways. The territory is impressive too and the park that is now there is lovely. It's so great that places like that get preserved and shared. We truly enjoyed our experience! Definitely worth a visit!

Google
What an amazing place that we still have with us. Unit sat for decades abandoned and going into ruins till it was brought back by the local preservation authority The interior has so many amazing and incredible details showing no cost was soared to build this hunt club. Unfortunately they don’t allow interior pictures to be taken. Well worth paying for the tour and seeing the home and surrounding grounds.

Google
We went for a wedding and it was a gorgeous venue. They set everything up on the property and had plenty of room so we weren’t getting in the car between the ceremony and reception. Signage could be a little clearer for events but we had a wonderful time.

Google
Beautiful Place with lots of Nature to see:) Really Enjoyed the surrounding area🤩

Google
It was a completely fascinating glimpse at a different way of life. A great tour. Beautiful surrounding grounds as well. Just sitting on the porch overlooking the water was quite the experience. There are 2 additional museums on the nearby grounds that are a great way to complete the story of the Corolla area.

Google
Amazingly restored 1920's mansion that sits close to the Currituck Sound and worth a visit if in the area. Connected to other historic areas by pathways and boardwalks, the entire area is worth a visit.

Google
Toured this Historical Building on a weekday afternoon. It wasn’t too busy. The grounds are beautiful and the home was restored to mimic the original home. There are guides to help direct you to the self guided audio tour throughout the home. Very beautiful interior and fascinating that the dining room was disassembled from the families original home in Rhode Island and assembled in the Whalehead. If you’re curious about the history behind this home and grounds from the 1920s, I highly recommend. Just absolutely ornate detailing with the wood fixtures. I would recommend leaving kids under 14 at home as there is no touching, video, photos, and loud voices within the home and tour. Plan to spend about an hour reading the information and just taking in the details. There is a 5-7$ fee for entering the home. You should check it out if you’re in Corolla.

Google
Beautiful park with wonderful sunsets. Plenty of places to walk around and explore. Great for photos. Lighthouse is within walking distance. I have been coming here for years and never took the opportunity to explore this area. Well worth a visit. Lots of birds in area. Even saw a bald eagle.

Yelp
This museum does NOT keep the hours they advertise. There are lots of fantastic OBX museums & gardens to visit. Not this one :(

Yelp
Lovely grounds on a beautifully preserved historic home. The back view is stunning, and the on-site Museum has public bathrooms just across from the Currituck Lighthouse. Plenty of breathtaking views from various stations on the property and if it's closed you can simply Peak inside and see the gorgeous antiques. The Boathouse is also worth a look, you can certainly spend plenty of time just perusing the grounds and even sitting down for a lovely picnic. Highly recommend a visit open to the public and the grounds are free of charge.

Yelp
No photos inside is disappointing the tour is self guided by IPad. It was informative and cheap but definitely a one and done. The kitchen, hunting room, bedrooms and bathrooms were beautiful and cool. The safe in the office was beautiful.

Yelp
Whalehead Mansion is a restored 1920s, five story home. It is located in the Currituck Sound. The self guided 45 minute tour was $7. Whalehead has a very small parking lot so if you cannot find a spot you will need to park over near the Maritime Museum and Currituck Lighthouse. The tour isn't really self guided as you cannot go at your own pace or in the order you want. They have it setup to go a certain way and an Ipod in some of the rooms to tell you about the room. Upstairs had a piece of paper to tell you about the rooms. If the tour was self guided I would have expected to spend as much time as I wanted in each room, some rooms more and some less. The basement has a lot of information to read and I learned a lot. Photography is not allowed inside but they do have a small gift shop where you can buy some books and other merchandise to learn more about the property. I still highly recommend visiting Whalehead and hope to tour it again someday. Maybe it become truly self guided after the pandemic.

Yelp
In expensive tour to learn a little bit about the local history. Restoration of the house is beautiful as is the outside property.

Yelp
Can't express how disappointed my family of 7 were with the staff and ADA level of accommodations at this state-run museum. Upon arriving at the house, we were told there was no ramp that we could use for my mom who is in a wheelchair to gain access into the house. After some discussions, the staff member did say there were temporary ramps in the closet "somewhere" but we should try to lift up the wheelchair to bring my mom up the stairs. I asked another staff member about the ramps and was again told the there were no ramps available at the moment. A second family also asked for ADA accessibility for my mom to also be told there were some somewhere in a closet but to have two of the men lift her up. We found all 3 of the women working at the museum to be curt and downright rude. I suggest that until Whalehead understands that it is EVERYONE'S right regardless of a person's disability to access a museum in America (without family members having to lift them up the stairs), avoid this place and spend your entertainment dollars elsewhere.

Yelp
This place is beautiful... and stinky. Upon arrival you will find a beautiful yellow museum with a bunch of dead fish in the pond. The fish are huge but dead... This place reeks, I hope they fix the water. I would recommend coming here for the experience!

Yelp
Bottom Line: A very interesting museum house that showcases the history and culture of Currituck and 1920s America but interruptions distracted from the overall experience. I love the Whalehead Club, as the Corolla Island mansion is commonly known, and I am so grateful it has been restored to its former glory and is open to the public for tours. Not only has the 21,000 square foot home been beautifully restored but many of the original furnishing have been located and reclaimed for the home which is quite a feat. Although I have toured the home previously I was equally enthusiastic to tour it again. The tour is only $7 and it takes you through most of the house which is awesome but I found the format of the tour to be a bit clumsy. It is an audio tour so initially I was expecting the audio would be through a personal headset but instead when you enter a room you hit play on an iPod that amplifies the narrative through a speaker. The content of the narrative was great and I believe it was fairly recently recorded, perhaps last year, so it has relatable references like that to the popular TV show Dowton Abbey. But at times it was a tad difficult to hear the audio when docents were chatting amongst themselves in quiet voices or when the audio was playing in an adjacent room so for that reason I would have preferred a headset. But overall, the audio was very interesting, informative and thoughtfully done. When the audio recording was complete for each room we were quickly ushered to the next listening station which is one of my biggest disappointments. Sometimes I wanted to take a second look at a photo, admire the view out the window or imagine what life was like in the home but there was not much of a chance to immerse myself in the experience even though I think there was only one other couple in the home (I could see that on the surveillance monitor when we paid and I wondered to myself why it wasn't busier.) My other disappointment is that the enthusiastic staff often interjected like when I was admiring Tiffany lamps in the dining room or artifacts in the basement. It was kinda like going to the movies with someone who wants to commentate through the movie and although I know it came from a good place it was distracting. I saw other reviewers noting they felt rushed and micromanaged too. Anyway, the home tells a wonderful story about the Knights, their circa 1920s winter home and the waterfowl hunting culture of Currituck. I enjoy American history, architecture and the Outer Banks so I was in heaven touring the Arts Noveau mansion nestled between the sound and ocean. I really appreciate the details of the house like the duck bill doorknobs and the Pullman Car playing cards on display and that you get to see the majority of the home. I also enjoyed the exhibits in the basement. It was fun to see the roaring 1920s attire and learn about the home's history after the Knight's death. A short film related to the house would have been an added bonus. The home is a museum and for me one of the hallmarks of a good museum is to inspire additional learning which the Whalehead Club certainly does. I have since enjoyed several books and documentaries on historic Currituck and the Whalehead Club. This is a fabulous landmark that has been painstaking restored by the utmost dedicated individuals and I encourage everyone to support this amazing museum.

Yelp
Who believes in Ghosts? Well I'm not exactly sure so I will say nothing, okay I am not sure...ok, why not! Story has it that the 1920's house is haunted. What I can tell you for sure is that it is absolutely gorgeous & if ghosts are hanging out, they have good taste! The tour lasted about 2 hours & was most imformative. The guides were friendly & not stuffy at all. You actually got to be pretty hands on during the tour. The grounds are magnificent and so beautiful. It is my understanding that you can come & bring a picinic, what fun. There are also other times that they have parties, events, wine tastings... I would definitely return. What's a girl to do? I love antiques & preserved buildings.

Yelp
Decided to visit the area as a day trip. When I got to the entrance, I was told I had to pay for the tour versus an entrance fee. No issue paying the fee, but the tour was basically audio recordings in every room, Think that should have been a little clearer. The staff seemed to be pretty particular about me going through the sequence, which I didn't understand since each location had their own recording and I could have skipped the upstairs. While I appreciated the commentary, I like to move at my own pace versus feeling like I was being pushed through a line and out the door. If it was busy, I could understand keeping people on track, but it wasn't. Still a beautiful house and enjoyed the historical context in the basement.

Yelp
Unexpected beauty & some of the most amazing sunsets. We usually have a walk around & then a picnic next to the sound near the house. Clean & uncrowded in September. Never climbed the lighthouse but maybe this year. Try Corolla bbq right in the park, excellent! You will not be disappointed! Wish they had a webcam so I could see the sunsets at home.

Yelp
A lovely place to walk around and explore on your own, as there are ponds, piers, and pagodas galore - but I don't recommend the Whalehead Winesday outing. It cost $15 per person to taste the wine of only 2 wineries. There were tons of people waiting for samples, because there was really nowhere else to go. Perhaps there were fewer vendors because it was the last WW of the season? If so, I think the rate should have been lowered to reflect that. Yes I got to keep the glass but I basically paid $15 for less than 1 glass of wine. Having said that, I did enjoy Sanctuary's wine, so I bought a bottle for what it cost me to enter the tasting area, and enjoyed it at home. Definitely do come and do a self-guided tour, though - it's quite beautiful!

Yelp
Wouldn't recommend the staff is very disrespectful and the tour it self Is not good. The house it self is pretty cool but the staff and tour are not good do not recommend.

Yelp
History was interesting. It was well preserved and information was well presented. Staff was knowledgeable. Felt decently safe Covid wise. They paced groups to make it more spread out. We were in most rooms except the basement by ourselves. Self guided tour was audio on an device on each room. Interesting information. Occasionally we couldn't hear it really well if others in the house were talking but I did like that I didn't have to wear a headset. House was beautiful and history was very interesting especially for the $7 per person entry fee. Glad we went on a rainy day!

Yelp
A couple of years ago my family and I visited Whalehead and did the tour. We all loved it, and found the history to be interesting. I did the wine tasting that Wednesday, and thought it was such a nice experience. There were four wineries, the lines went fairly quick, and the wine wasn't overly expensive to purchase. My experience this time was a little different, as there were only two wineries, and the lines were very slow. $15 seems like a lot to pay in comparison to my past experience, but I can say that the wine is tasty, the commemorative wine glass is cute, and all of the staff members are nice. There's a wonderful view of the Sound, and I really suggest going there close to sunset, as the sunset is the most beautiful I've ever seen.

Yelp
This house was beautiful, interesting and historic. However, I've never felt more micromanaged and uncomfortable on a house tour. It was supposed to be self guided, but it seemed people were at our shoulder at every turn reminding us where to go, what to do, what to look at, and what NOT to do. You know, maybe I didn't want to see that room. Maybe I wanted to skip the library. You already let me know I was on security camera, maybe you could buzz off and let me go at my own pace and decide what I want to see? I mean, I paid for it, you're not giving it away...

Yelp
What a gem of a house and great history. We found this place on Tripadvisor and enjoyed every minute of our self guided tour. Our 10 year old son enjoyed working in his treasure hunt and getting a prize on the way out. This tour took us less than an hour from start to finish and was easy to follow. The actual house has so many neat features to it. The cork flooring throughout the home, the large and spacious servant's quarters, the period pieces throughout the home, the "corduroy" style walls, the high ceilings and wide staircases. It was unlike any home I have ever seen. The staff was so friendly and excellent. The grounds are just lovely.

Yelp
We thought about touring this place, but we had our young son in tow, and the guide said a tour would be 45 minutes long. We had to pass. BUT- the place looks awesome. We walked around the grounds and saw lots of geese and ducks. The house has been totally fixed up and brought back to it's 1920's glory. There's even a ghost tour!

Yelp
What a gem. Thanks to a great tour guide at another venue we ended up at Whalehead Club. Now this tour is what I expected the Biltmore to be... I'm sorry but I'm still bitter about being herded like cattle through the mansion on memorial day weekend after spending major bucks....sigh..but anyways...back to Whalehead. We toured the historic house. The tour was easily an hour plus. I think almost close to two hours. All of our docents were knowledgeable about the house. I appreciated the diversity in docents too. I'm used to older guides (usually folks who are retired and want to keep busy) who do this as an hobby, but the house also featured several local high school students. You get to go up close and personal with the house, and the history during the tour. Not just history of Whalehead, but history of the era and how folks lived back then. I just found it fascinating. The grounds are also beautiful. I could see spending a whole day there if you are into nature. We weren't and the weather was kinda crummy. Definitely check this place out.

Yelp
WOW! What a wonderful restoration job! Having visited back in the '90s, pre-restoration, seeing this grand structure wasting away, we were so impressed with the work that's been done and coupled with the story being told, over a wonderful self-guided audio system, this was a real treat. Historic Corolla contains an important piece of Americana. The docents were also very helpful with area recommendations. Long way from Matthews, NC but worth it.

Yelp
My wife and I went on this and it really wasn't quite as it was billed. There really wasn't anything to make you want to spend your $20 to go on the night tour. The best part was hearing the history of how the house was built and why. Most of this you can get by spending much less and going on a day tour. The house is beautiful but including more about the history of the island and not so much on the house would be great. There are many "haunted" locations on the island and I am sure they could be more adventurous than the Whalehead Club.

Yelp
Love this place! Great evening picnic spot! Will go back tomorrow to go up the lighthouse.

Yelp
The tour of this historic house was a wonderful surprise. If you need a break from the beach and enjoy architecture, history, and natural history, this is a great place to visit.

Suzanne P.

Yelp
This mansion is absolutely gorgeous. The tour is usually done by automated system but we had a large group and we arrived as another tour was starting so we had the fortune of having a live guided tour. The information is very thorough and very interesting. The grounds and the house are stunning and all of the intricate details within the structure were awesome. If you enjoy history this is something you don't want to skip.

Yelp
Went on the Ghost Tour by flashlight Neat idea but probably better for kids (we were all adults). The other guides seemed to do more to scare their visitors. Because the building was built in 1920s and recently restored you don't hear alot of back in the 1800s stories, etc. I wish we had heard more pirate stories but it is mostly about the house. Although, we did get to meet the subject of one of the stories the next day at Corolla Outback Adventures. He was just relaxing under a tree. The building looked beautiful but we were walking around after dark by flashlight so now I want to go back. They were so innovative when they built it. I would recommend doing a tour guided by a human not the taped messages because you want to ask alot of questions. The park and nearby wildlife ctr seem interesting. I have missed the lighthouse being open twice so I have to plan better next time.

Yelp
Stop by the boat ramp. I helped put it in 10 years ago. I almost got bit by a snake. If you don't want to go to the beach, the Whalehead Club is a nice soundside alternative. Plenty of wideopen spaces for picnics and nice spots to take pictures of the lighthouse. Mostly snake free. Why now, as I write this, do I have memories of sitting in the parking lot for hours? Free parking.

Yelp
Such a beautiful spot for outdoor activities and some great history. I highly recommend visiting for any of their many events.

Yelp
Went to their Wednesday night Wine festival. It was not a festival in the slightest. A small roped off area with two 8' tables. You had to fight through a stagnant line of people similar to that of a keg party. We left within in 5 minutes and demanded our money back. I gave them two stars instead of one because they did give us our money back.

Yelp
What a great Place for a day trip. The whale Head Club, Currituck Lighthouse and the Wildlife Education center all in walking distance. Learn all the history in one great spot

Yelp
A must see in the outer banks! The house is beautiful and the self guided tour is so much fun! The beautiful Art Deco woodworking in the house is unforgettable! If you love Downton Abby and want to see a outer banks version this has to be on your list. The staff was so knowledgable and kind it was such a joy! And don't forget about the ghost tours also a must!

Emma G.

Yelp
This place is awesome! We did the regular tour which is $5 and totally worth it. You get to find out about the Knight family from the 1920s. This place is also haunted!!! They start ghost tours in a week so we were sad to have missed them but the staff was great at telling us about ghosts they've seen!! Everyone would love it!!

Yelp
My family and I visited Whalehead during their Christmas in Corolla Tours. First off, I was highly displeased by the lack of attention many of their employees had in regards to general hospitality courtesy. There was a fairly larger woman, who said she had been working their quite a while, and she was very displeasing, and seemed quite aggravated. The older lady at the front desk was very sweet and had a nice charm to her, and that was pretty much the best part of the experience. The tour costed way to much for something that just seemed to be put together over night. The younger tour guides seemed to be the only people that were full of energy and excited to be there. I didn't know I was about to step into a retirement community of ignorant and unhappy people! My younger son and I were looking forward to this for a couple of weeks, since it's quite well known and spoken highly of. They called themselves a "museum" after they told my son (5 years old) he is not allowed to have any water in the house. This was not a museum, it was a knock of version of what they wanted a so called "museum" to be. Heading to the gift shop, we were impressed with the variety of items they had, but again, it seemed like it was geared to the elderly... The poor young lady working the gift shop was consistently cut off by it seemed to be the store manager... It was embarrassing to watch this young lady be spoken down to in front of customers. This young girl was giving us advice as to where to go to eat in Corolla, and the other lady kept over stepping her speaking about places in Kitty Hawk.. which we are aware of since we live there. Overall, I will never recommend going to the whalehead. It's quite a unhappy experience and not worth the time or money.
